LDP for the largest eigenvalue of Kronecker random matrices

We prove a large deviations principle for the largest eigenvalue of Gaussian Kronecker matrices, namely matrices defined as the sum of tensors of independent Gaussian matrices in the regime where the dimension of the Gaussian matrices goes to infinity.

Discrete and Continuous Muttalib--Borodin Process: Large Deviations and Limit Shape Analysis

In this paper, we study the asymptotic behaviour of plane partitions distributed according to a $q^{\text{Volume}}$-weighted Muttalib--Borodin ensemble and its associated discrete point process. We establish a Large Deviation Principle for the process, explicitly characterizing the rate function. A defining feature of our model is the emergence of a strict upper bound on the macroscopic particle density, which translates the asymptotic analysis into a non-trivial constrained minimization problem. Through a rigorous Riemann--Hilbert analysis, we derive exact, closed-form formulas for the limit shape of the partitions across all parameter regimes. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first time a constrained Riemann--Hilbert problem has been formulated and analytically solved for a bi-orthogonal ensemble. Our analysis allows to track the system through a macroscopic phase transition, computing the minimizer in both the subcritical and supercritical regimes. As a byproduct of our analysis, we obtain an explicit expression for the arctic curve that separates the ``frozen'' and ``liquid'' regions of the limit shape. Furthermore, we reveal that the equilibrium measure exhibits a continuously varying exponent at the hard edge departing from the universal fixed exponents typically observed in classical random matrix theory.

Large deviation principle for the largest eigenvalue of random matrices with a variance profile

We establish large deviation principles for the largest eigenvalue of large random matrices with variance profiles. For $N \in \mathbb N$, we consider random $N \times N$ symmetric matrices $H^N$ which are such that $H_{ij}^{N}=\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}X_{i,j}^{N}$ for $1 \leq i,j \leq N$, where the $X_{i,j}^{N}$ for $1 \leq i \leq j \leq N$ are independent and centered. We then denote $\Sigma_{i,j} ^N = \text{Var} (X_{i,j}^{N}) ( 1 + \textbf{1}_{ i =j})^{-1}$ the variance profile of $H^N$. Our large deviation principle is then stated under the assumption that the $\Sigma^N$ converge in a certain sense toward a real continuous function $\sigma$ of $[0,1]^2$ and that the entries of $H^N$ are sharp sub-Gaussian. Our rate function is expressed in terms of the solution of a Dyson equation involving $\sigma$. This result is a generalization of a previous work by the third author and is new even in the case of Gaussian entries.

Spherical Integrals of Sublinear Rank

We consider the asymptotics of $k$-dimensional spherical integrals when $k = o(N)$. We prove that the $o(N)$-dimensional spherical integrals are approximately the products of $1$-dimensional spherical integrals. Our formulas extend the results for $k$-dimensional spherical integrals proved by Guionnet and Maïda in [29] and Husson and Guionnet in [34] which are only valid for $k$ finite and independent of $N$. These approximations will be used to prove a large deviation principle for the joint $2k(N)$ extreme eigenvalues for sharp sub-Gaussian Wigner matrices and for additive deformations of GOE/GUE matrices. Furthermore, our results will be used to compute the free energies of spherical SK vector spin glasses and the mutual information for matrix estimation problems when the dimensions of the spins or signals have sublinear growth.

Large deviations for the largest eigenvalue of generalized sample covariance matrices

We establish a large-deviations principle for the largest eigenvalue of a generalized sample covariance matrix, meaning a matrix proportional to $Z^T ΓZ$, where $Z$ has i.i.d. real or complex entries and $Γ$ is not necessarily the identity. We treat the classical case when $Z$ is Gaussian and $Γ$ is positive definite, but we also cover two orthogonal extensions: Either the entries of $Z$ can instead be sharp sub-Gaussian, a class including Rademacher and uniform distributions, where we find the same rate function as for the Gaussian model; or $Γ$ can have negative eigenvalues if $Z$ remains Gaussian. The latter case confirms formulas of Maillard in the physics literature. We also apply our techniques to the largest eigenvalue of a deformed Wigner matrix, real or complex, where we upgrade previous large-deviations estimates to a full large-deviations principle. Finally, we remove several technical assumptions present in previous related works.

Asymptotic Behavior of Multiplicative Spherical Integrals and S-transform

In this note, we study the asymptotics of a spherical integral that is a multiplicative counterpart to the well-known Harish-Chandra Itzykson Zuber integral. This counterpart can also be expressed in terms the Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric function. When the argument of this spherical integral is of finite support and of order $N$, these asymptotics involve a modified version of the $S$-transform of the limit measure of the matrix argument and its largest eigenvalue. To prove our main result, we are leveraging a technique of successive conditionning. In particular we prove in a "mathematically rigorous" manner a result from Mergny and Potters in the case $β=1,2$ and we generalize it for multiple arguments

Asymptotics of k dimensional spherical integrals and applications

In this article, we prove that k-dimensional spherical integrals are asymptotically equivalent to the product of 1-dimensional spherical integrals. This allows us to generalize several large deviations principles in random matrix theory known before only in a one-dimensional case. As examples, we study the universality of the large deviations for k extreme eigenvalues of Wigner matrices (resp. Wishart matrices, resp. matrices with general variance profiles) with sharp sub-Gaussian entries, as well as large deviations principles for extreme eigenvalues of Gaussian Wigner and Wishart matrices with a finite dimensional perturbation.

Spectrum and pseudospectrum for quadratic polynomials in Ginibre matrices

For a fixed quadratic polynomial $\mathfrak{p}$ in $n$ non-commuting variables, and $n$ independent $N\times N$ complex Ginibre matrices $X_1^N,\dots, X_n^N$, we establish the convergence of the empirical spectral distribution of $P^N =\mathfrak{p}(X_1^N,\dots, X_n^N)$ to the Brown measure of $\mathfrak{p}$ evaluated at $n$ freely independent circular elements $c_1,\dots, c_n$ in a non-commutative probability space. The main step of the proof is to obtain quantitative control on the pseudospectrum of $P^N$. Via the well-known linearization trick this hinges on anti-concentration properties for certain matrix-valued random walks, which we find can fail for structural reasons of a different nature from the arithmetic obstructions that were illuminated in works on the Littlewood--Offord problem for discrete scalar random walks.

Large deviations for the largest eigenvalue of matrices with variance profiles

In this article we consider Wigner matrices $X_N$ with variance profiles (also called Wigner-type matrices) which are of the form $X_N(i,j) = \sigma(i/N,j/N) a_{i,j} / \sqrt{N}$ where $\sigma$ is a symmetric real positive function of $[0,1]^2$ and $\sigma$ will be taken either continuous or piecewise constant. We prove a large deviation principle for the largest eigenvalue of those matrices under the same condition of sharp sub-Gaussian bound and for some other assumptions on $\sigma$. These sub-Gaussian bounds are verified for example for Gaussian variables, Rademacher variables or uniform variables on $[- \sqrt{3}, \sqrt{3}]$.

Large deviations for the largest eigenvalue of sub-Gaussian matrices

We establish large deviations estimates for the largest eigenvalue of Wigner matrices with sub-Gaussian entries. Under technical assumptions, we show that the large deviation behavior of the largest eigenvalue is universal for small deviations, in the sense that the speed and the rate function are the same as in the case of the GOE. In contrast, in the regime of very large deviations, we obtain a non-universal rate function and we prove that the associated eigenvector is localized given the large deviation event, thus establishing the existence of a transition between two different large deviation mechanisms.

Large deviations for the largest eigenvalue of Rademacher matrices

In this article, we consider random Wigner matrices, that is symmetric matrices such that the subdiagonal entries of Xn are independent, centered, and with variance one except on the diagonal where the entries have variance two. We prove that, under some suitable hypotheses on the laws of the entries, the law of the largest eigenvalue satisfies a large deviation principle with the same rate function as in the Gaussian case. The crucial assumption is that the Laplace transform of the entries must be bounded above by the Laplace transform of a centered Gaussian variable with same variance. This is satisfied by the Rademacher law and the uniform law on [sqrt{3}, sqrt{3}]. We extend our result to complex entries Wigner matrices and Wishart matrices.
