Integration in finite terms and exponentially algebraic functions

We develop techniques at the interface between differential algebra and model theory to study the following problems of exponential algebraicity: Does a given algebraic differential equation admits an exponentially algebraic solution, that is, a holomorphic solution which is definable in the structure of restricted elementary functions? Do solutions of a given list of algebraic differential equations share a nontrivial exponentially algebraic relation, that is, a nontrivial relation definable in the structure of restricted elementary functions? These problems can be traced back to the work of Abel and Liouville on the problem of integration in finite terms. This article concerns generalizations of their techniques adapted to the study of exponential transcendence and independence problems for more general systems of differential equations. As concrete applications, we obtain exponential transcendence and independence statements for several classical functions: the error function, the Bessel functions, indefinite integrals of algebraic expressions involving Lambert's W-function, the equation of the pendulum, as well as corresponding decidability results.

Algebraic types in Zilber's exponential field

We characterise the model-theoretic algebraic closure in Zilber's exponential field. A key step involves showing that certain algebraic varieties have finite intersections with certain finite-rank subgroups of the graph of exponentiation. Mordell-Lang for algebraic tori (a theorem of Laurent) plays a central role in our proof.

Around Zilber's quasiminimality conjecture

This is an extended abstract for a survey talk given in Oberwolfach on 1st December 2022, slightly updated in June 2023. I survey some work around the notion of quasiminimality and some of the progress towards Zilber's conjecture from the last 25 years.

Quasiminimality of complex powers

The complex field, equipped with the multivalued functions of raising to each complex power, is quasiminimal, proving a conjecture of Zilber and providing evidence towards his stronger conjecture that the complex exponential field is quasiminimal.

Independence relations for exponential fields

We give four different independence relations on any exponential field. Each is a canonical independence relation on a suitable Abstract Elementary Class of exponential fields, showing that two of these are NSOP$_1$-like and non-simple, a third is stable, and the fourth is the quasiminimal pregeometry of Zilber's exponential fields, previously known to be stable (and uncountably categorical). We also characterise the fourth independence relation in terms of the third, strong independence.

Blurrings of the $j$-function

Inspired by the idea of blurring the exponential function, we define blurred variants of the $j$-function and its derivatives, where blurring is given by the action of a subgroup of $\rm{GL}_2(\mathbb{C})$. For a dense subgroup (in the complex topology) we prove an Existential Closedness theorem which states that all systems of equations in terms of the corresponding blurred $j$ with derivatives have complex solutions, except where there is a functional transcendence reason why they should not. For the $j$-function without derivatives we prove a stronger theorem, namely, Existential Closedness for $j$ blurred by the action of a subgroup which is dense in $\rm{GL}_2^+(\mathbb{R})$, but not necessarily in $\rm{GL}_2(\mathbb{C})$. We also show that for a suitably chosen countable algebraically closed subfield $C \subseteq \mathbb{C}$, the complex field augmented with a predicate for the blurring of the $j$-function by $\rm{GL}_2(C)$ is model theoretically tame, in particular, $ω$-stable and quasiminimal.

A closure operator respecting the modular $j$-function

We prove some unconditional cases of the Existential Closedness problem for the modular $j$-function. For this, we show that for any finitely generated field we can find a "convenient" set of generators. This is done by showing that in any field equipped with functions replicating the algebraic behaviour of the modular $j$-function and its derivatives, one can define a natural closure operator in three equivalent different ways.

A geometric approach to some systems of exponential equations

Zilber's Exponential Algebraic Closedness conjecture (also known as Zilber's Nullstellensatz) gives conditions under which a complex algebraic variety should intersect the graph of the exponential map of a semiabelian variety. We prove the special case of the conjecture where the variety has dominant projection to the domain of the exponential map, for abelian varieties and for algebraic tori. Furthermore, in the situation where the intersection is 0-dimensional, we exhibit structure in the intersection by parametrizing the sufficiently large points as the images of the period lattice under a (multivalued) analytic map. Our approach is complex geometric, in contrast to a real analytic proof given by Brownawell and Masser just for the case of algebraic tori.

Differential Existential Closedness for the $j$-function

We prove the Existential Closedness conjecture for the differential equation of the $j$-function and its derivatives. It states that in a differentially closed field certain equations involving the differential equation of the $j$-function have solutions. Its consequences include a complete axiomatisation of $j$-reducts of differentially closed fields, a dichotomy result for strongly minimal sets in those reducts, and a functional analogue of the Modular Zilber-Pink with Derivatives conjecture.

Blurred Complex Exponentiation

It is shown that the complex field equipped with the "approximate exponential map", defined up to ambiguity from a small group, is quasiminimal: every automorphism-invariant subset of the field is countable or co-countable. If the ambiguity is taken to be from a subfield analogous to a field of constants then the resulting "blurred exponential field" is isomorphic to the result of an equivalent blurring of Zilber's exponential field, and to a suitable reduct of a differentially closed field. These results are progress towards Zilber's conjecture that the complex exponential field itself is quasiminimal. A key ingredient in the proofs is to prove the analogue of the exponential-algebraic closedness property using the density of the group governing the ambiguity with respect to the complex topology.

Existentially Closed Exponential Fields

We characterise the existentially closed models of the theory of exponential fields. They do not form an elementary class, but can be studied using positive logic. We find the amalgamation bases and characterise the types over them. We define a notion of independence and show that independent systems of higher dimension can also be amalgamated. We extend some notions from classification theory to positive logic and position the category of existentially closed exponential fields in the stability hierarchy as NSOP$_1$ but TP$_2$.

Higher amalgamation properties in stable theories

For a complete, stable theory $T$ we construct, in a reasonably canonical way, a related stable theory $T^*$ which has higher independent amalgamation properties over the algebraic closure of the empty-set. The theory $T^*$ is an algebraic cover of $T$ and we give an explicit description of the finite covers involved in the construction of $T^*$ from $T$. This follows an approach of E. Hrushovski. If $T$ is almost strongly minimal with a $0$-definable strongly minimal set, then we show that $T^*$ has higher amalgamation over any algebraically closed subset.

Variants of Schanuel's conjecture

This is a collection of variants of Schanuel's conjecture and the known dependencies between them. It was originally written in 2007, and made available for a time on my webpage. I have been asked by a few people to make it available again and have taken the opportunity to make some minor revisions now in January 2018. The treatment is far from exhaustive of the literature, and for the most part consists of statements which were under discussion in the Oxford logic group between around 2002 and 2007.

On local definability of holomorphic functions

Given a collection A of holomorphic functions, we consider how to describe all the holomorphic functions locally definable from A. The notion of local definability of holomorphic functions was introduced by Wilkie, who gave a complete description of all functions locally definable from A in the neighbourhood of a generic point. We prove that this description is no longer complete in the neighbourhood of non-generic points. More precisely, we produce three examples of holomorphic functions which suggest that at least three new operations need to be added to Wilkie's description in order to capture local definability in its entirety. The constructions illustrate the interaction between resolution of singularities and definability in the o-minimal setting.

Pseudo-exponential maps, variants, and quasiminimality

We give a construction of quasiminimal fields equipped with pseudo-analytic maps, generalising Zilber's pseudo-exponential function. In particular we construct pseudo-exponential maps of simple abelian varieties, including pseudo-$\wp$-functions for elliptic curves. We show that the complex field with the corresponding analytic function is isomorphic to the pseudo-analytic version if and only the appropriate version of Schanuel's conjecture is true and the corresponding version of the strong exponential-algebraic closedness property holds. Moreover, we relativize the construction to build a model over a fairly arbitrary countable subfield and deduce that the complex exponential field is quasiminimal if it is exponentially-algebraically closed. This property asks only that the graph of exponentiation have non-trivial intersection with certain algebraic varieties but does not require genericity of these points. Furthermore Schanuel's conjecture is not required as a condition for quasiminimality.

Exponentially Closed Fields and the Conjecture on Intersections with Tori

We give an axiomatization of the class ECF of exponentially closed fields, which includes the pseudo-exponential fields previously introduced by the second author, and show that it is superstable over its interpretation of arithmetic. Furthermore, ECF is exactly the elementary class of the pseudo-exponential fields if and only if the diophantine conjecture CIT on atypical intersections of tori with subvarieties is true.

Local interdefinability of Weierstrass elliptic functions

We explain which Weierstrass elliptic functions are locally definable from other elliptic functions and exponentiation in the context of o-minimal structures. The proofs make use of the predimension method from model theory to exploit functional transcendence theorems in a systematic way.
