New Physics Contributions to The B -> phi K_S Decay

Recent measurements of the time-dependent CP asymmetry of the B -> phi K_S decay give results whose central values differ from standard model expectations. It is shown how such data can be used to identify new physics contributions in a model-independent manner. In general, a sizeable new amplitude with nontrivial weak and strong phases would be required to explain current data. Improvement in the quality of data will allow one to form a more definite conclusion.

Low-Mass Baryon-Antibaryon Enhancements in B Decays

The nature of low-mass baryon-antibaryon enhancements seen in B decays is explored. Three possibilities include (i) states near threshold as found in a model by Nambu and Jona-Lasinio, (ii) isoscalar states with $J^{PC} = 0^{\pm +}$ coupled to a pair of gluons, and (iii) low-mass enhancements favored by the fragmentation process. Ways of distinguishing these mechanisms using angular distributions and flavor symmetry are proposed.

Resource Letter: The Standard Model and Beyond

This Resource Letter provides a guide to literature on the Standard Model of elementary particles and possible extensions. In the successful theory of quarks and leptons and their interactions, important questions remain, such as the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking, the origin of quark and lepton masses, the source of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, and the makeup of its matter and energy density. References are cited for quarks and leptons, gauge theories, color and chromodynamics, weak interactions, electroweak unification, CP violation, dynamics of heavy quarks, Higgs bosons, precision electroweak measurements, supersymmetry, dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, composite quarks and leptons, grand unification and extended gauge groups, string theories, large extra dimensions, neutrino masses, cosmic microwave background radiation, dark matter, dark energy, accelerator facilities, and non-accelerator experiments.

Final-State Phases in $B \to D π, D^* π$, and $D ρ$ Decays

The final-state phases in $\bar{B} \to D π, D^* π$, and $D ρ$ decays appear to follow a pattern similar to those in $D \to \bar{K} π$, $\bar{K}^* π$, and $\bar{K} ρ$ decays. Each set of processes is characterized by three charge states but only two independent amplitudes, so the amplitudes form triangles in the complex plane. For the first two sets the triangles appear to have non-zero area, while for the $D ρ$ or $\bar{K} ρ$ decays the areas of the triangles are consistent with zero. Following an earlier discussion of this behavior for $D$ decays, a similar analysis is performed for B decays, and the relative phases and magnitudes of contributing amplitudes are determined. The significance of recent results on $\ob \to D^{(*)0} \bar{K}^{(*)0}$ is noted. Open theoretical and experimental questions are indicated.

Light Gluino and the Running of alpha_s

A gluino in the mass range 12--16 GeV combined with a light (2--5.5 GeV) bottom squark, as has been proposed recently to explain an excess of b quark hadroproduction, would affect the momentum-scale dependence (``running'') of the strong coupling constant alpha_s in such a way as to raise its value at M_Z by about 0.014 +/- 0.001. If one combines sources of uncertainty at low (m_b) and high (M_Z) mass scales, one can only distinguish such an effect at slightly more than the 2 sigma level. Prospects for improvement in this situation, which include better lattice QCD simulations and better measurements at M_Z, are discussed.

Production of Missing c\bar{c} and b\bar{b} States

The heavy quarkonium c\bar{c} and b\bar{b} resonances have a rich spectroscopy with numerous narrow S, P, and D-wave levels below the production threshold of open charm and beauty mesons. The mass predictions for these states are an important test of QCD calculations. We review some recent work describing the production of missing η_b(nS), 1^3D_J(b\bar{b}) and 1^1P_1(c\bar{c}) and 1^1P_1(b\bar{b}) states.

Conference Summary (5th Int. Conf. on Hyperons, Charm, and Beauty Hadrons)

A summary is given of the 5th International Conference on Hyperons, Charm and Beauty Hadrons held in Vancouver, Canada, June 25th to 29th, 2002. This series of conferences began in 1995 in Strasbourg, France, in large part through the efforts of A. Fridman, to whose memory this talk is dedicated. Topics reviewed include kaon and hyperon physics, charm and beauty production and decays, heavy baryons, the physics of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and CP violation, and precision electroweak analyses. An attempt is made to combine a review of the high points of the conference with a more general overview of the field and its prospects.

Two-Body Cabibbo-Suppressed Charmed Meson Decays

Singly-Cabibbo-suppressed decays of charmed particles governed by the quark subprocesses $c \to s u \bar s$ and $c \to d u \bar d$ are analyzed using a flavor-topology approach, based on a previous analysis of the Cabibbo-favored decays governed by $c \to s u \bar d$. Decays to $PP$ and $PV$, where $P$ is a pseudoscalar meson and $V$ is a vector meson, are considered. We include processes in which $η$ and $η'$ are produced.

Production of singlet P-wave $c \bar c$ and $b \bar b$ states

No spin-singlet $b \bar b$ quarkonium state has yet been observed. In this paper we discuss the production of the singlet P-wave $b\bar{b}$ and $c\bar{c}$ $^1P_1$ states $h_b$ and $h_c$. We consider two possibilities. In the first the $^1P_1$ states are produced via the electromagnetic cascades $\ups(3S) \to η_b(2S) + γ\to h_b + γγ\to η_b +γγγ$ and $ψ'\to η_c' + γ\to h_c + γγ\to η_c + γγγ$. A more promising process consists of single pion transition to the $^1P_1$ state followed by the radiative transition to the $1^1S_0$ state: $\ups(3S)\to h_b + π^0 \to η_b + π^0 +γ$ and $ψ' \to h_c + π^0 \to η_c + π^0 +γ$. For a million $\ups(3S)$ or $ψ'$'s produced we expect these processes to produce several hundred events.

Convention-independent study of CP-violating asymmetries in $B \to ππ$

CP-violating asymmetries in the decay $B^0(t)\to π^+ π^-$ are a potentially rich source of information about both strong and weak phases. In a previous treatment by the present authors use was made of an assumption about the relative magnitude of tree and penguin amplitudes contributing to this process. This assumption involved an ambiguity in relating the tree amplitude to the amplitude for $B \to π\ell ν$. It is shown here that one can avoid this assumption, which adopted a particular convention for tree and penguin amplitudes, and that the results are convention-independent.

$B \to D_s π$ and the tree amplitude in $B \to π^+ π^-$

The recently-observed decay $B^0 \to D_s^+ π^-$ is expected to proceed mainly by means of a tree amplitude in the factorization limit: $B^0 \to π^- {(W^+)}^*$, ${(W^+)}^* \to D_s^+$. Under this assumption, we predict the corresponding contribution of the tree amplitude to $B^0 \to π^+ π^-$. We indicate the needed improvements in data that will allow a useful estimate of this amplitude with errors comparable to those accompanying other methods. Since the factorization hypothesis for this process goes beyond that proved in most approaches, we also discuss independent tests of this hypothesis.

The Standard Model in 2001

The Standard Model of electroweak and strong interactions is reviewed in a pedagogical set of lectures. After an introduction to the quarks, leptons, and gauge bosons, an elementary discussion of gauge theories is given, with application to quantum chromodynamics. The physics of $W$ bosons, electroweak unification, and $Z$ bosons is then described, ending with a discussion of precision electroweak experiments and the light they can shed on the Higgs boson and other physics.

Strong and Weak Phases from Time-Dependent Measurements of $B \to ππ$

Time-dependence in $B^0(t) \to π^+ π^-$ and $\ob(t) \to π^+ π^-$ is utilized to obtain a maximal set of information on strong and weak phases. One can thereby check theoretical predictions of a small strong phase $δ$ between penguin and tree amplitudes. A discrete ambiguity between $δ\simeq 0$ and $δ\simeq π$ may be resolved by comparing the observed charge-averaged branching ratio predicted for the tree amplitude alone, using measurements of $B \to πl ν$ and factorization, or by direct comparison of parameters of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix with those determined by other means. It is found that with 150 fb$^{-1}$ from BaBar and Belle, this ambiguity will be resolvable if no direct CP violation is found. In the presence of direct CP violation, the discrete ambiguity between $δ$ and $π- δ$ becomes less important, vanishing altogether as $|δ| \to π/2$. The role of measurements involving the lifetime difference between neutral $B$ eigenstates is mentioned briefly.

Weak Phase $γ$ from $B_s(t) \to K^+ K^-$

We re-examine the time-dependent rates of $\bs(t) \to K^+ K^-$ and $\obs(t) \to K^+ K^-$, including a lifetime difference between neutral $\bs$ mass eigenstates. The two rates, normalized by the rate of $\bs \to \ko \ok$, are used to obtain ambiguity-free information on a strong phase and on the weak phase $γ$. We discuss the sensitivity of extracting $γ$ to the measured quantities, and find that an error of $\pm 10^\circ$ in $γ$ is possible for a sample of several thousand $\bs(t) \to K^+ K^-$ decays. This study is complementary to a recent similar analysis of the U-spin related decays $\bo(t) \to π^+π^-$ and $\ob(t) \to π^+π^-$.

Updated Analysis of Some Two-Body Charmless B Decays

New data from the BaBar, Belle, and CLEO Collaborations on B decays to two-body charmless final states are analyzed, with the following consequences: (1) The penguin amplitude which dominates the decay $B^+ \to π^+ K^{*0}$ has a magnitude similar to that dominating $B^+ \to π^+ K^0$. (2) The decay $B^+ \to π^+ η$, a good candidate for observing direct CP violation, should be detectable at present levels of sensitivity. (3) The decays $B^+ \to η' K^+$ and $B^+ \to ηK^{*+}$ are sufficiently similar in rate to the corresponding decays $B^0 \to η' K^0$ and $B^0 \to ηK^{*0}$, respectively, that one cannot yet infer the need for ``tree'' amplitudes $t'$ contributing to the $B^+$ but not the $B^0$ decays. Statistical requirements for observing this and other examples of tree-penguin interference are given. (4) Whereas the $B^+ \to η' K^+$ and $B^0 \to η' K^0$ rates cannot be accounted for by the penguin amplitude $p'$ alone but require an additional flavor-singlet penguin contribution $s'$, no such flavor-singlet penguin contribution is yet called for in the decays $B^+ \to ηK^{*+}$ or $B^0 \to ηK^{*0}$. Predictions for the rates for $B^+ \to η' K^{*+}$ and $B^0 \to η' K^{*0}$ are given which would allow one to gauge the importance of these flavor-singlet penguin amplitudes.

Information on $B \to ππ$ Provided by the Semileptonic Process $B \to πl ν$

Analysis of the present data on the semileptonic process $B \to π\ell ν$ indicates that they have not yet reached the precision to provide adequate information on the $B \to π$ form factor $F_+(q^2)$, which for $q^2 = m_π^2$ is known to be related to the factorized color-favored (``$T$'', or ``tree'') contribution to $B^0 \to π^+ π^-$. It is shown here that with around 500 $B \to π\ell ν$ events in which rate and spectrum are measured one can improve the accuracy of $T$ by a significant amount. A recent CLEO determination of the $D^* D π$ coupling constant is compared with an earlier prediction, and its role in the description of the $B \to π$ form factors is noted. When combined with an estimate of the penguin amplitude (``$P$'') obtained using flavor SU(3) symmetry from $B \to K π$ decays, information on $T$ allows one to gauge the effects of the penguin amplitude on extraction of the weak phase $α= ϕ_2$ from the time-dependent CP-violating rate asymmetry in $B^0 \to π^+ π^-$. The constraint on $α$ implied by a recent experimental result on this asymmetry is described.
