Identification of Neutral B Mesons Using Correlated Hadrons

The identification of the flavor of a neutral $B$ meson can make use of hadrons produced nearby in phase space. Examples include the decay of ``$B^{**}$'' resonances or the production of hadrons as a result of the fragmentation process. Some aspects of this method are discussed, including time-dependent effects in neutral $B$ decays to flavor states, to eigenstates of CP and to other states, and the effects of possible coherence between $B^0$ and $\overline{B}^0$ in the initial state. We study the behavior of the leading hadrons in $b$-quark jets and the expected properties of $B^{**}$ resonances. These are extrapolated from the corresponding $D^{**}$ resonances, of whose properties we suggest further studies.

Framework for Identification of Neutral B Mesons

We introduce a method for the study of CP-violating asymmetries in tagged states of neutral $B$ mesons with arbitrary coherence properties. A set of time-dependent measurements is identified which completely specifies the density matrix of the initial state in a two-component space with basis vectors $B^0$ and $\overline B^0$, and permits a determination of phases in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. For a given tagging configuration, the measurement of decays both to flavor eigenstates and to CP eigenstates provides the necessary information.

Supersymmetric quantum mechanics and the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy

The connection between supersymmetric quantum mechanics and the Korteweg- de Vries (KdV) equation is discussed, with particular emphasis on the KdV conservation laws. It is shown that supersymmetric quantum mechanics aids in the derivation of the conservation laws, and gives some insight into the Miura transformation that converts the KdV equation into the modified KdV equation. The construction of the $τ$-function by means of supersymmetric quantum mechanics is discussed.

Heavy Meson Masses and Decay Constants

Masses and decay constants of mesons containing a single $c$ or $b$ quark are described within the framework of heavy-quark symmetry. The $B_s^* - B_s$ and $\bar B^{*0} - \bar B^0$ mass splittings are found equal to within a fraction of an MeV. Decay constants of $D$ and $B$ mesons are estimated using isospin mass splittings in the $D$, $D^*$, $B$, and $B^*$ states to isolate the electromagnetic hyperfine interaction between quarks. A relation following from the use of splittings in kaons is also considered.

Model of the Quark Mixing Matrix

The structure of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix is analyzed from the standpoint of a composite model. A model is constructed with three families of quarks, by taking tensor products of sufficient numbers of spin-1/2 representations and imagining the dominant terms in the mass matrix to arise from spin-spin interactions. Generic results then obtained include the familiar relation $|V_{us}| = (m_d/m_s)^{1/2} - (m_u/m_c)^{1/2}$, and a less frequently seen relation $|V_{cb}| = \sqrt{2} [(m_s/m_b) - (m_c/m_t)]$. The magnitudes of $V_{ub}$ and $V_{td}$ come out naturally to be of the right order. The phase in the CKM matrix can be put in by hand, but its origin remains obscure.

Test for Right-Handed $b$ Quark Decays

Gronau and Wakaizumi have proposed a model in which the dominant $b$ decays are due to exchange of a new right-handed gauge boson. A test of this model via the study of polarized $Λ_b$ baryons produced in $e^+ e^- \to Z \to Λ_b + X$ is suggested.

Electroweak Measurements and Top Quark Mass Limits

The agreement of electroweak measurements with theory places limits on the masses of the top quark and the $W$ boson. It is shown how these limits arise and what constraints various measurements (particularly a top quark mass determination) would provide on the theory. The degree to which present and future measurements can constrain the Higgs boson mass is examined.

Quarkonium and Power Law Potentials

The spectra and decay rates of $c \bar c$ and $b \bar b$ levels are well described, for the most part, by a power-law potential of the form $V(r)=λ(r^α-1)/α+{\rm const.}$, where $α\simeq 0$. The results of an up-to-date fit to the data on spin-averaged levels are presented. Results on electric dipole transitions in systems bound by power law potentials are also presented, with applications to the bottomonium system.

Method for Flavor Tagging in Neutral B Meson Decays

A method is proposed for tagging the flavor of neutral $B$ mesons in the study of CP-violating decay asymmetries. The method makes use of a possible difference in interactions in $B π$ or $B^* π$ systems with isospins 1/2 and 3/2, and would be particularly clean if the $I = 1/2$ systems can be detected as ``$B^{**}$'' resonances.

Heavy Quark Symmetry Violation in Semileptonic Decays of D Mesons

The decays of $D$ mesons to $K l ν$ and $K^* l ν$ final states exhibit significant deviations from the predictions of heavy-quark symmetry, as one might expect since the strange quark's mass is of the same order as the QCD scale. Nonetheless, in order to understand where the most significant effects might lie for heavier systems (such as $B \to D lν$ and $B \to D^* lν$), the pattern of these deviations is analyzed from the standpoint of perturbative QCD and ${\cal O}(1/m_s)$ corrections. Two main effects are noted. First, the perturbative QCD corrections lead to an overall decrease of predicted rates, which can be understood in terms of production of excited kaonic states. Second, ${\cal O}(1/m_s)$ effects tend to cancel the perturbative QCD corrections in the case of $Klν$ decay, while they have minimal effect in $K^*lν$ decay.
