Symbolic powers of determinantal ideals in prime characteristic

We study the symbolic powers of determinantal ideals of generic, generic symmetric, and Hankel matrices of variables, and of Pfaffians of generic skew-symmetric matrices, in prime characteristic. Specifically, we show that the limit $\lim\limits_{n\to\infty} \frac{\textrm{reg}(I^{(n)})}{n}$ exists and that $\textrm{depth}(R/I^{(n)})$ stabilizes for $n\gg 0$. Furthermore, we give explicit formulas for the stable value of $\textrm{depth}(R/I^{(n)})$ in the generic and skew-symmetric cases. In order to show these results, we introduce the notion of symbolic $F$-purity of ideals which is satisfied by the classes of ideals mentioned above. Moreover, we find several properties satisfied by symbolic $F$-pure ideals. For example, we show that their symbolic Rees algebras and symbolic associated graded algebras are $F$-pure. As a consequence, their $a$-invariants and depths present good behaviors. In addition, we provide a Fedder's-like Criterion for symbolic $F$-purity.

Mixed multiplicities of graded families of ideals

We show the existence (and define) the mixed multiplicities of arbitrary graded families of ideals under mild assumptions. In particular, our methods and results are valid for the case of arbitrary $\mathfrak{m}$-primary graded families. Furthermore, we provide a far-reaching "Volume = Multiplicity formula" for the mixed multiplicities of graded families of ideals.

Convex bodies and graded families of monomial ideals

We show that the mixed volumes of arbitrary convex bodies are equal to mixed multiplicities of graded families of monomial ideals, and to normalized limits of mixed multiplicities of monomial ideals. This result evinces the close relation between the theories of mixed volumes from convex geometry and mixed multiplicities from commutative algebra.

Analytic spread and integral closure of integrally decomposable modules

We relate the analytic spread of a module expressed as the direct sum of two submodules with the analytic spread of its components. We also study a class of submodules whose integral closure can be obtained by means of a simple computer algebra procedure once the integral closure of each row ideal is known. In particular, we analyze a class of modules, not necessarily of maximal rank, whose integral closure is determined by the family of Newton polyhedra of their row ideals.

When are multidegrees positive?

Let $k$ be an arbitrary field, $P = P_k^{m_1} \times_k \cdots \times_k P_k^{m_p}$ be a multiprojective space over $k$, and $X \subseteq P$ be a closed subscheme of $P$. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the positivity of the multidegrees of $X$. As a consequence of our methods, we show that when $X$ is irreducible, the support of multidegrees forms a discrete algebraic polymatroid. In algebraic terms, we characterize the positivity of the mixed multiplicities of a standard multigraded algebra over an Artinian local ring, and we apply this to the positivity of mixed multiplicities of ideals. Furthermore, we use our results to recover several results in the literature in the context of combinatorial algebraic geometry.

mmLSH: A Practical and Efficient Technique for Processing Approximate Nearest Neighbor Queries on Multimedia Data

Many large multimedia applications require efficient processing of nearest neighbor queries. Often, multimedia data are represented as a collection of important high-dimensional feature vectors. Existing Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH) techniques require users to find top-k similar feature vectors for each of the feature vectors that represent the query object. This leads to wasted and redundant work due to two main reasons: 1) not all feature vectors may contribute equally in finding the top-k similar multimedia objects, and 2) feature vectors are treated independently during query processing. Additionally, there is no theoretical guarantee on the returned multimedia results. In this work, we propose a practical and efficient indexing approach for finding top-k approximate nearest neighbors for multimedia data using LSH called mmLSH, which can provide theoretical guarantees on the returned multimedia results. Additionally, we present a buffer-conscious strategy to speed up the query processing. Experimental evaluation shows significant gains in performance time and accuracy for different real multimedia datasets when compared against state-of-the-art LSH techniques.

Improving Locality Sensitive Hashing by Efficiently Finding Projected Nearest Neighbors

Similarity search in high-dimensional spaces is an important task for many multimedia applications. Due to the notorious curse of dimensionality, approximate nearest neighbor techniques are preferred over exact searching techniques since they can return good enough results at a much better speed. Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH) is a very popular random hashing technique for finding approximate nearest neighbors. Existing state-of-the-art Locality Sensitive Hashing techniques that focus on improving performance of the overall process, mainly focus on minimizing the total number of IOs while sacrificing the overall processing time. The main time-consuming process in LSH techniques is the process of finding neighboring points in projected spaces. We present a novel index structure called radius-optimized Locality Sensitive Hashing (roLSH). With the help of sampling techniques and Neural Networks, we present two techniques to find neighboring points in projected spaces efficiently, without sacrificing the accuracy of the results. Our extensive experimental analysis on real datasets shows the performance benefit of roLSH over existing state-of-the-art LSH techniques.

Extremal growth of Betti numbers and trivial vanishing of (co)homology

A Cohen-Macaulay local ring $R$ satisfies trivial vanishing if $\operatorname{Tor}_i^R(M,N)=0$ for all large $i$ implies $M$ or $N$ has finite projective dimension. If $R$ satisfies trivial vanishing then we also have that $\operatorname{Ext}^i_R(M,N)=0$ for all large $i$ implies $M$ has finite projective dimension or $N$ has finite injective dimension. In this paper, we establish obstructions for the failure of trivial vanishing in terms of the asymptotic growth of the Betti and Bass numbers of the modules involved. These, together with a result of Gasharov and Peeva, provide sufficient conditions for $R$ to satisfy trivial vanishing; we provide sharpened conditions when $R$ is generalized Golod. Our methods allow us to settle the Auslander-Reiten conjecture in several new cases. In the last part of the paper, we provide criteria for the Gorenstein property based on consecutive vanishing of Ext. The latter results improve similar statements due to Ulrich, Hanes-Huneke, and Jorgensen-Leuschke.

Symbolic analytic spread: upper bounds and applications

The symbolic analytic spread of an ideal $I$ is defined in terms of the rate of growth of the minimal number of generators of its symbolic powers. In this article we find upper bounds for the symbolic analytic spread under certain conditions in terms of other invariants of $I$. Our methods also work for more general systems of ideals. As applications we provide bounds for the (local) Kodaira dimension of divisors, the arithmetic rank, and the Frobenius complexity. We also show sufficient conditions for an ideal to be a set-theoretic complete intersection.

Efficient Bitmap-based Indexing and Retrieval of Similarity Search Image Queries

Finding similar images is a necessary operation in many multimedia applications. Images are often represented and stored as a set of high-dimensional features, which are extracted using localized feature extraction algorithms. Locality Sensitive Hashing is one of the most popular approximate processing techniques for finding similar points in high-dimensional spaces. Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH) and its variants are designed to find similar points, but they are not designed to find objects (such as images, which are made up of a collection of points) efficiently. In this paper, we propose an index structure, Bitmap-Image LSH (bImageLSH), for efficient processing of high-dimensional images. Using a real dataset, we experimentally show the performance benefit of our novel design while keeping the accuracy of the image results high.

Splittings and symbolic powers of square-free monomial Ideals

We study the symbolic powers of square-free monomial ideals via symbolic Rees algebras and methods in prime characteristic. In particular, we prove that the symbolic Rees algebra and the symbolic associated graded algebra are split with respect to a morphism which resembles the Frobenius map and that exists in all characteristics. Using these methods, we recover a result by Hoa and Trung which states that the normalized $a$-invariants and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the symbolic powers converge. In addition, we give a sufficient condition for the equality of the ordinary and symbolic powers of this family of ideals, and relate it to Conforti-Cornuéjols conjecture. Finally, we interpret this condition in the context of linear optimization.

On asymptotic vanishing behavior of local cohomology

Let $R$ be a standard graded algebra over a field $k$, with irrelevant maximal ideal $\fm$, and $I$ a homogeneous $R$-ideal. We study the asymptotic vanishing behavior of the graded components of the local cohomology modules $\{\HH{i}{\fm}{R/I^n}\}_{n\in \NN}$ for $i<\dim R/I$. We show that, when $\chara k= 0$, $R/I$ is Cohen-Macaulay, and $I$ is a complete intersection locally on $\Spec R \setminus\{\fm\}$, the lowest degrees of the modules $\{\HH{i}{\fm}{R/I^n}\}_{n\in \NN}$ are bounded by a linear function whose slope is controlled by the generating degrees of the dual of $I/I^2$. Our result is a direct consequence of a related bound for symmetric powers of locally free modules. If no assumptions are made on the ideal or the field $k$, we show that the complexity of the sequence of lowest degrees is at most polynomial, provided they are finite. Our methods also provide a result on stabilization of maps between local cohomology of consecutive powers of ideals.

On the growth of deviations

The deviations of a graded algebra are a sequence of integers that determine the Poincare series of its residue field and arise as the number of generators of certain DG algebras. In a sense, deviations measure how far a ring is from being a complete intersection. In this paper we study extremal deviations among those of algebras with a fixed Hilbert series. In this setting, we prove that, like the Betti numbers, deviations do not decrease when passing to an initial ideal and are maximized by the Lex-segment ideal. We also prove that deviations grow exponentially for Golod rings and for certain quadratic monomial algebras.

Length of local cohomology of powers of ideals

Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field $k$ with irrelevant ideal $\frak m$ and dimension $d$. Let $I$ be a homogeneous ideal in $R$. We study the asymptotic behavior of the length of the modules $H^{i}_{\frak m}(R/I^n)$ for $n\gg 0$. We show that for a fixed number $α\in \mathbb Z$, $\limsup_{n\rightarrow \infty}\frac{λ(H^{i}_{\frak m}(R/I^n)_{\geq -αn})}{n^d}<\infty.$ Combining this with recent strong vanishing results gives that $\limsup_{n\rightarrow \infty}\frac{λ(H^{i}_{\frak m}{R/I^n})}{n^d}<\infty$ in many situations. We also establish that the actual limit exists and is rational for certain classes of monomial ideals $I$ such that the lengths of local cohomology of $I^n$ are eventually finite. Our proofs use Gröbner deformation and Presburger arithmetic. Finally, we utilize more traditional commutative algebra techniques to show that $\liminf_{n\rightarrow \infty}\frac{λ(H^{i}_{\frak m}(R/I^n))}{n^d}>0$ when $R/I$ has "nice" singularities in both zero and positive characteristics.

Lower bounds on projective levels of complexes

For an associative ring $R$, the projective level of a complex $F$ is the smallest number of mapping cones needed to build $F$ from projective $R$-modules. We establish lower bounds for the projective level of $F$ in terms of the vanishing of homology of $F$. We then use these bounds to derive a new version of The New Intersection Theorem for level when $R$ is a commutative Noetherian local ring.

Edge ideals and DG algebra resolutions

Let $R= S/I$ where $S=k[T_1, \ldots, T_n]$ and $I$ is a homogeneous ideal in $S$. The acyclic closure $R \langle Y \rangle $ of $k$ over $R$ is a DG algebra resolution obtained by means of Tate's process of adjoining variables to kill cycles. In a similar way one can obtain the minimal model $S[X]$, a DG algebra resolution of $R$ over $S$. By a theorem of Avramov there is a tight connection between these two resolutions. In this paper we study these two resolutions when $I$ is the edge ideal of a path or a cycle. We determine the behavior of the deviations $\varepsilon_i(R)$, which are the number of variables in $R\langle Y \rangle$ in homological degree $i$. We apply our results to the study of the $k$-algebra structure of the Koszul homology of $R$.

Multiplicities of Classical Varieties

The $j$-multiplicity plays an important role in the intersection theory of Stückrad-Vogel cycles, while recent developments confirm the connections between the $ε$-multiplicity and equisingularity theory. In this paper we establish, under some constraints, a relationship between the $j$-multiplicity of an ideal and the degree of its fiber cone. As a consequence, we are able to compute the $j$-multiplicity of all the ideals defining rational normal scrolls. By using the standard monomial theory, we can also compute the $j$- and $ε$-multiplicity of ideals defining determinantal varieties: The found quantities are integrals which, quite surprisingly, are central in random matrix theory.

Artin-Nagata properties, minimal multiplicities, and depth of fiber cones

Minimal values of multiplicities of ideals have a strong relation with the depth of blowup algebras. In this paper, we introduce the notion of Goto-minimal $j$-multiplicity for ideals of maximal analytic spread. In a Cohen-Macaulay ring, inspired by the work of S. Goto, A. Jayanthan, T. Puthenpurakal, and J. Verma, we study the interplay among this new notion, the notion of minimal $j$-multiplicity introduced by C. Polini and Y. Xie, and the Cohen-Macaulayness of the fiber cone of ideals satisfying certain residual assumptions. We are also able to provide a bound on the reduction number of ideals of Goto-minimal $j$-multiplicity having either Cohen-Macaulay associated graded algebra, or linear decay in the depth of their powers.
