Multiple Parton Scattering in Nuclei: Twist-Four Nuclear Matrix Elements and Off-Forward Parton Distributions

Multiple parton scatterings inside a large nucleus generally involve higher-twist nuclear parton matrix elements. The gluon bremsstrahlung induced by multiple scattering depends not only on direct parton matrix elements but also on momentum-crossed ones, due to the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal interference effect. We show that both types of twist-four nuclear parton matrix elements can be factorized approximately into the product of twist-two nucleon matrix elements in the limit of extremely large nuclei, $A\to \infty$, as assumed in previous studies. Due to the correlative nature of the twist-four matrix elements under consideration, it is actually the off-forward parton distributions that appear naturally in this decomposition, rather than the ordinary diagonal distributions probed in deeply-inelastic scattering. However, we argue that the difference between these two distribution classes is small in certain kinematic regimes. In these regions, the twist-four nuclear parton matrix elements are evaluated numerically and compared to the factorized form for different nuclear sizes within a schematic model of the two-nucleon correlation function. The nuclear size dependence is found to be $A^{4/3}$ in the limit of large $A$, as expected. We find that the factorization is reasonably good when the momentum fraction carried by the gluon field is moderate. The deviation can be more than a factor of 2, however, for small gluon momentum fractions, where the gluon distribution is very large.

A Study of Nucleon Spin Struture from Quantum Chromodynamics

I present an introduction to the field of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) with emphasis on nucleon spin structure and perturbative methods. After a somewhat comprehensive overview of perturbative QCD, including the systematics of renormalization, I introduce deeply-inelastic scattering and deeply-virtual Compton scattering along with the nonperturbative distribution functions appearing in these processes. I show how these processes can be used to extract the distribution of longitudinal spin of nucleons, and briefly discuss the complications associated with transverse spin components. There are five appendices which accompany this work, discussing topics ranging from canonical field quantization to dimensional regularization to the structure of several important Lie groups. These appendices are meant to give the reader a certain basic understanding of some of the mathematical details underlying the main text, as well as provide a useful reference. This work was submitted in a slightly different form to the University of Maryland at College Park in partial completion of the requirements for a doctor of philosophy in physics, received August 2000.

An Analysis of the Next-to-Leading Order Corrections to the g_T(=g_1+g_2) Scaling Function

We present a general method for obtaining the quantum chromodynamical radiative corrections to the higher-twist (power-suppressed) contributions to inclusive deep-inelastic scattering in terms of light-cone correlation functions of the fundamental fields of quantum chromodynamics. Using this procedure, we calculate the previously unknown ${\cal O}(α_s)$ corrections to the twist-three part of the spin scaling function $g_T(x_B,Q^2) (=g_1(x_B,Q^2)+g_2(x_B,Q^2))$ and the corresponding forward Compton amplitude $S_T(ν,Q^2)$. Expanding our result about the unphysical point $x_B=\infty$, we arrive at an operator product expansion of the nonlocal product of two electromagnetic current operators involving twist-two and -three operators valid to ${\cal O}(α_s)$ for forward matrix elements. We find that the Wandzura-Wilczek relation between $g_1(x_B,Q^2)$ and the twist-two part of $g_T(x_B,Q^2)$ is respected in both the singlet and non-singlet sectors at this order, and argue its validity to all orders. The large-$N_c$ limit does not appreciably simplify the twist-three Wilson coefficients.

The Singlet g_2 Structure Function in the Next-to-Leading Order

Following a previous study of the one-loop factorization of the nonsinglet $g_2$ structure function of the nucleon, we present in this paper the next-to-leading order coefficient functions in the singlet sector. To obtain the result, the partonic processes of virtual Compton scattering off two and three "on-shell" gluons are calculated. A key step in achieving the correct factorization is to separate the correct twist-two contribution. The Burkardt-Cottingham sum rule is nominally satisfied at this order.

One-Loop Factorization of the Nucleon g_2-Structure Function in the Non-Singlet Case

We consider the one-loop factorization of the simplest twist-three process: inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of longitudinally-polarized leptons on a transversely-polarized nucleon target. By studying the Compton amplitudes for certain quark and gluon states at one loop, we find the coefficient functions for the non-singlet twist-three distributions in the factorization formula of g_2(x_B,Q^2). The result marks the first step towards a next-to-leading order (NLO) formalism for this transverse-spin-dependent structure function of the nucleon.

Generalized Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov Sum Rule at Order {\cal O}(p^4) in Chiral Perturbation Theory

We calculate the forward spin-dependent photon-nucleon Compton amplitudes $S_1$ and $S_2$ as functions of photon energy $ν$ and mass $Q^2$ at the next-to-leading (${\cal O}(p^4)$) order in chiral perturbation theory, from which we extract the contribution to a generalized Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum rule at low $Q^2$. The result indicates a much rapid $Q^2$ variation of the sum rule than a simple dimensional analysis would yield.

Generalized Sum Rules for Spin-Dependent Structure Functions of the Nucleon

The Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov and Bjorken sum rules are special examples of dispersive sum rules for the spin-dependent structure function G_1(ν, Q^2) at Q^2=0 and \infty. We generalize these sum rules through studying the virtual-photon Compton amplitudes S_1(ν, Q^2) and S_2(ν,Q^2). At small Q^2, we calculate the Compton amplitudes at leading-order in chiral perturbation theory; the resulting sum rules can be tested by data soon available from Jefferson Lab. For Q^2>>Λ_{QCD}^2, the standard twist-expansion for the Compton amplitudes leads to the well-known deep-inelastic sum rules. Although the situation is still relatively unclear in a small intermediate-Q^2 window, we argue that chiral perturbation theory and the twist-expansion alone already provide strong constraints on the Q^2-evolution of the G_1(ν,Q^2) sum rule from Q^2=0 to Q^2=\infty.

Simplification of Higher-Twist Evolution in the Large N_c Limit: Why and Why Not

Working in the light-cone gauge, we find a simple procedure to calculate the autonomous one-loop Q^2 evolution of the twist-three part of the nucleon g_T(x, Q^2) structure function in the large-N_c limit. Our approach allows us to investigate the possibility of a similar large-N_c simplification for other higher-twist evolutions. In particular, we show that it does not occur for the twist-four part of the f_4(x, Q^2), g_3(x, Q^2) and h_3(x, Q^2) distributions. We also argue that the simplification of the twist-three evolution does not persist beyond one loop.

One-Loop Corrections and All Order Factorization In Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering

We calculate the one-loop corrections to a general off-forward deeply-virtual Compton process at leading twist for both parton helicity-dependent and independent cases. We show that the infrared divergences can be factorized entirely into off-forward parton distributions, even when one of the two photons is onshell. We argue that this property persists to all orders in perturbation theory. We obtain the next-to-leading order Wilson coefficients for the general leading-twist expansion of the product of two electromagnetic currents in the \overline{\rm MS} scheme.

One-Loop QCD Corrections to Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering: The Parton Helicity-Independent Case

We show that the one-loop QCD correction to deeply-virtual Compton scattering can be factorized into the finite perturbative contributions and the collinearly-divergent terms, which correspond to the matrix elements of the off-forward parton distributions. As a by-product, we obtain the next-to-leading order coefficient functions in the generalized operator product expansion of two vector currents.
