The Ratios Conjecture and upper bounds for negative moments of $L$-functions over function fields

We prove special cases of the Ratios Conjecture for the family of quadratic Dirichlet $L$--functions over function fields. More specifically, we study the average of $L(1/2+α,χ_D)/L(1/2+β,χ_D)$, when $D$ varies over monic, square-free polynomials of degree $2g+1$ over $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$, as $g \to \infty$, and we obtain an asymptotic formula when $\Re β\gg g^{-1/2+\varepsilon}$. We also study averages of products of $2$ over $2$ and $3$ over $3$ $L$--functions, and obtain asymptotic formulas when the shifts in the denominator have real part bigger than $g^{-1/4+\varepsilon}$ and $g^{-1/6+\varepsilon}$ respectively. The main ingredient in the proof is obtaining upper bounds for negative moments of $L$--functions. The upper bounds we obtain are expected to be almost sharp in the ranges described above. As an application, we recover the asymptotic formula for the one-level density of zeros in the family with the support of the Fourier transform in $(-2,2)$.

Symmetric Function Theory and Unitary Invariant Ensembles

Representation theory and the theory of symmetric functions have played a central role in Random Matrix Theory in the computation of quantities such as joint moments of traces and joint moments of characteristic polynomials of matrices drawn from the Circular Unitary Ensemble and other Circular Ensembles related to the classical compact groups. The reason is that they enable the derivation of exact formulae, which then provide a route to calculating the large-matrix asymptotics of these quantities. We develop a parallel theory for the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble of random matrices, and other related unitary invariant matrix ensembles. This allows us to write down exact formulae in these cases for the joint moments of the traces and the joint moments of the characteristic polynomials in terms of appropriately defined symmetric functions. As an example of an application, for the joint moments of the traces we derive explicit asymptotic formulae for the rate of convergence of the moments of polynomial functions of GUE matrices to those of a standard normal distribution when the matrix size tends to infinity.

The Loss Surfaces of Neural Networks with General Activation Functions

The loss surfaces of deep neural networks have been the subject of several studies, theoretical and experimental, over the last few years. One strand of work considers the complexity, in the sense of local optima, of high dimensional random functions with the aim of informing how local optimisation methods may perform in such complicated settings. Prior work of Choromanska et al (2015) established a direct link between the training loss surfaces of deep multi-layer perceptron networks and spherical multi-spin glass models under some very strong assumptions on the network and its data. In this work, we test the validity of this approach by removing the undesirable restriction to ReLU activation functions. In doing so, we chart a new path through the spin glass complexity calculations using supersymmetric methods in Random Matrix Theory which may prove useful in other contexts. Our results shed new light on both the strengths and the weaknesses of spin glass models in this context.

Maximum Absolute Determinants of Upper Hessenberg Bohemian Matrices

A matrix is called Bohemian if its entries are sampled from a finite set of integers. We determine the maximum absolute determinant of upper Hessenberg Bohemian Matrices for which the subdiagonal entries are fixed to be $1$ and upper triangular entries are sampled from $\{0,1,\cdots,n\}$, extending previous results for $n=1$ and $n=2$ and proving a recent conjecture of Fasi & Negri Porzio [8]. Furthermore, we generalize the problem to non-integer-valued entries.

Moments of moments of characteristic polynomials of random unitary matrices and lattice point counts

In this note we give a combinatorial and non-computational proof of the asymptotics of the integer moments of the moments of the characteristic polynomials of Haar distributed unitary matrices as the size of the matrix goes to infinity. This is achieved by relating these quantities to a lattice point count problem. Our main result is a new explicit expression for the leading order coefficient in the asymptotic as a volume of a certain region involving continuous Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns with constraints.

A representation of joint moments of CUE characteristic polynomials in terms of Painleve functions

We establish a representation of the joint moments of the characteristic polynomial of a CUE random matrix and its derivative in terms of a solution of the sigma-Painleve V equation. The derivation involves the analysis of a formula for the joint moments in terms of a determinant of generalised Laguerre polynomials using the Riemann-Hilbert method. We use this connection with the sigma-Painleve V equation to derive explicit formulae for the joint moments and to show that in the large-matrix limit the joint moments are related to a solution of the sigma-Painleve III equation. Using the conformal block expansion of the tau-functions associated with the sigma-Painleve V and the sigma-Painleve III equations leads to general conjectures for the joint moments.

Moments of quadratic twists of elliptic curve L-functions over function fields

We calculate the first and second moments of L-functions in the family of quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve E over F_q[x], asymptotically in the limit as the degree of the twists tends to infinity. We also compute moments involving derivatives of L-functions over quadratic twists, enabling us to deduce lower bounds on the correlations between the analytic ranks of the twists of two distinct curves.

Extreme values of CUE characteristic polynomials: a numerical study

We present the results of systematic numerical computations relating to the extreme value statistics of the characteristic polynomials of random unitary matrices drawn from the Circular Unitary Ensemble (CUE) of Random Matrix Theory. In particular, we investigate a range of recent conjectures and theoretical results inspired by analogies with the theory of logarithmically-correlated Gaussian random fields. These include phenomena related to the conjectured freezing transition. Our numerical results are consistent with, and therefore support, the previous conjectures and theory. We also go beyond previous investigations in several directions: we provide the first quantitative evidence in support of a correlation between extreme values of the characteristic polynomials and large gaps in the spectrum, we investigate the rate of convergence to the limiting formulae previously considered, and we extend the previous analysis of the CUE to the C$β$E which corresponds to allowing the degree of the eigenvalue repulsion to become a parameter.

Moments of zeta and correlations of divisor-sums: V

In this series of papers we examine the calculation of the $2k$th moment and shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line using long Dirichlet polynomials and divisor correlations. The present paper completes the general study of what we call Type II sums which utilize a circle method framework and a convolution of shifted convolution sums to obtain all of the lower order terms in the asymptotic formula for the mean square along $[T,2T]$ of a Dirichlet polynomial of arbitrary length with divisor functions as coefficients.

Variance of sums in arithmetic progressions of divisor functions associated with higher degree l-functions in $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$

We compute the variances of sums in arithmetic progressions of generalised k-divisor functions related to certain L-functions in $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$, in the limit as $q\to\infty$. This is achieved by making use of recently established equidistribution results for the associated Frobenius conjugacy classes. The variances are thus expressed, when $q\to\infty$, in terms of matrix integrals, which may be evaluated. Our results extend those obtained previously in the special case corresponding to the usual $k$-divisor function, when the L-function in question has degree one. They illustrate the role played by the degree of the L-functions; in particular, we find qualitatively new behaviour when the degree exceeds one. Our calculations apply, for example, to elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$, and we illustrate them by examining in some detail the generalised $k$-divisor functions associated with the Legendre curve.

Variance of sums in arithmetic progressions of arithmetic functions associated with higher degree $L$-functions in $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$

We compute the variances of sums in arithmetic progressions of arithmetic functions associated with certain $L$-functions of degree two and higher in $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$, in the limit as $q\to\infty$. This is achieved by establishing appropriate equidistribution results for the associated Frobenius conjugacy classes. The variances are thus related to matrix integrals, which may be evaluated. Our results differ significantly from those that hold in the case of degree-one $L$-functions (i.e. situations considered previously using this approach). They correspond to expressions found recently in the number field setting assuming a generalization of the pair-correlation conjecture. Our calculations apply, for example, to elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$.

Averages of ratios of the Riemann zeta-function and correlations of divisor sums

We establish a connection between the ratios conjecture for the Riemann zeta-function and a conjecture concerning correlations of convolutions of Möbius and divisor functions. Specifically, we prove that the ratios conjecture and an arithmetic correlations conjecture imply the same result. This provides new support for the ratios conjecture, which previously had been motivated by analogy with formulae in random matrix theory and by a heuristic recipe. Our main theorem generalises a recent calculation pertaining to the special case of two-over-two ratios.

Moments of zeta and correlations of divisor-sums: III

In this series we examine the calculation of the $2k$th moment and shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line using long Dirichlet polynomials and divisor correlations. The present paper is concerned with the precise input of the conjectural formula for the classical shifted convolution problem for divisor sums so as to obtain all of the lower order terms in the asymptotic formula for the mean square along $[T,2T]$ of a Dirichlet polynomial of length up to $T^2$ with divisor functions as coefficients.

Moments of zeta and correlations of divisor-sums: I

We examine the calculation of the second and fourth moments and shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line using long Dirichlet polynomials and divisor correlations. Previously this approach has proved unsuccessful in computing moments beyond the eighth, even heuristically. A careful analysis of the second and fourth moments illustrates the nature of the problem and enables us to identify the terms that are missed in the standard application of these methods.

Mean Value Theorems for L-functions over Prime Polynomials for the Rational Function Field

The first and second moments are established for the family of quadratic Dirichlet $L$--functions over the rational function field at the central point $s=\tfrac{1}{2}$ where the character $χ$ is defined by the Legendre symbol for polynomials over finite fields and runs over all monic irreducible polynomials $P$ of a given odd degree. Asymptotic formulae are derived for fixed finite fields when the degree of $P$ is large. The first moment obtained here is the function field analogue of a result due to Jutila in the number--field setting. The approach is based on classical analytical methods and relies on the use of the analogue of the approximate functional equation for these $L$--functions.
