Holographic Spectral Functions at Finite Baryon Density

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we compute the spectral functions of thermal super Yang Mills at large N_c coupled to a small number of flavours of fundamental matter, N_f<<N_c, in the presence of a nonzero baryon density. The holographic dual of such a theory involves the addition of probe D7-branes with a background worldvolume gauge field switched on, embedded in the geometry of a stack of black D3-branes. We perform the analysis in the vector and scalar channels which become coupled for nonzero values of the spatial momentum and baryon density. In addition, we obtain the effect of the presence of net baryon charge on the photon production. We also extract the conductivity and find perfect agreement with the results derived by Karch and O'Bannon in a macroscopic setup.

AdS/CFT with Flavour in Electric and Magnetic Kalb-Ramond Fields

We investigate gauge/gravity duals with flavour for which pure-gauge Kalb-Ramond B fields are turned on in the background, into which a D7 brane probe is embedded. First we consider the case of a magnetic field in two of the spatial boundary directions. We show that at finite temperature, i.e. in the AdS-Schwarzschild background, the B field has a stabilizing effect on the mesons and chiral symmetry breaking occurs for a sufficiently large value of the B field. Then we turn to the electric case of a B field in the temporal direction and one spatial boundary direction. In this case, there is a singular region in which it is necessary to turn on a gauge field on the brane in order to ensure reality of the brane action. We find that the brane embeddings are attracted towards this region. Far away from this region, in the weak field case at zero temperature, we investigate the meson spectrum and find a mass shift similar to the Stark effect.

Canonical Coordinates and Meson Spectra for Scalar Deformed N=4 SYM from the AdS/CFT Correspondence

Five supersymmetric scalar deformations of the AdS_5xS^5 geometry are investigated. By switching on condensates for the scalars in the N=4 multiplet with a form which preserves a subgroup of the original R-symmetry, disk and sphere configurations of D3-branes are formed in the dual supergravity background. The analytic, canonical metric for each geometry is formulated and the singularity structure is studied. Quarks are introduced into two of the corresponding field theories using D7-brane probes and the pseudoscalar meson spectrum is calculated. For one of the condensate configurations, a mass gap is found and shown analytically to be present in the massless limit. It is also found that there is a stepped spectrum with eigenstate degeneracy in the limit of small quark masses. In the case of a second, similar deformation, it is necessary to understand the full D3-D7 brane interaction to study the limit of small quark masses. It is seen that simple solutions to the equations of motion for the other three geometries are unlikely to exist.

Holographic Confinement/Deconfinement Phase Transitions of AdS/QCD in Curved Spaces

Recently Herzog has shown that deconfinement of AdS/QCD can be realized, in the hard-wall model where the small radius region is removed in the asymptotically AdS space, via a first order Hawking-Page phase transition between a low temperature phase given by a pure AdS geometry and a high temperature phase given by the AdS black hole in Poincare coordinates. In this paper we first extend Herzog's work to the hard wall AdS/QCD model in curved spaces by studying the thermodynamics of AdS black holes with spherical or negative constant curvature horizon, dual to a non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a sphere or hyperboloid respectively. For the spherical horizon case, we find that the temperature of the phase transition increases by introducing an infrared cutoff, compared to the case without the cutoff; For the hyperbolic horizon case, there is a gap for the infrared cutoff, below which the Hawking-Page phase transition does not occur. We also discuss charged AdS black holes in the grand canonical ensemble, corresponding to a Yang-Mills theory at finite chemical potential, and find that there is always a gap for the infrared cutoff due to the existence of a minimal horizon for the charged AdS black holes with any horizon topology.

AdS/QCD Phenomenological Models from a Back-Reacted Geometry

We construct a fully back-reacted holographic dual of a four-dimensional field theory which exhibits chiral symmetry breaking. Two possible models are considered by studying the effects of a five-dimensional field, dual to the $q\bar{q}$ operator. One model has smooth geometry at all radii and the other dynamically generates a cutoff at finite radius. Both of these models satisfy Einstein's field equations. The second model has only three free parameters, as in QCD, and we show that this gives phenomenologically consistent results. We also discuss the possibility that in order to obtain linear confinement from a back-reacted model it may be necessary to consider the condensate of a dimension two operator.

Embedding Flipped SU(5) into SO(10)

We embed the flipped SU(5) models into the SO(10) models. After the SO(10) gauge symmetry is broken down to the flipped SU(5) \times U(1)_X gauge symmetry, we can split the five/one-plets and ten-plets in the spinor \mathbf{16} and \mathbf{\bar{16}} Higgs fields via the stable sliding singlet mechanism. As in the flipped SU(5) models, these ten-plet Higgs fields can break the flipped SU(5) gauge symmetry down to the Standard Model gauge symmetry. The doublet-triplet splitting problem can be solved naturally by the missing partner mechanism, and the Higgsino-exchange mediated proton decay can be suppressed elegantly. Moreover, we show that there exists one pair of the light Higgs doublets for the electroweak gauge symmetry breaking. Because there exist two pairs of additional vector-like particles with similar intermediate-scale masses, the SU(5) and U(1)_X gauge couplings can be unified at the GUT scale which is reasonably (about one or two orders) higher than the SU(2)_L \times SU(3)_C unification scale. Furthermore, we briefly discuss the simplest SO(10) model with flipped SU(5) embedding, and point out that it can not work without fine-tuning.

Three Flavour QCD from the Holographic Principle

Building on recent research into five-dimensional holographic models of QCD, we extend this work by including the strange quark with an SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R gauge symmetry in the five-dimensional theory. In addition we deform the naive $AdS$ metric with a single parameter, thereby breaking the conformal symmetry at low energies. The vector and axial vector sectors are studied in detail and both the masses and decay constants are calculated with the additional parameters. It is shown that with a single extra degree of freedom, exceptional agreement with experimental results can be obtained in the light quark sector while the kaon sector is found to give around 10% agreement with lattice results. We propose some simple extensions to this work to be taken up in future research.

Towards a Perfect QCD Gravity Dual

Many examples of gravitational duals exist of theories that are highly supersymmetric and conformal in the UV yet have the same massless states as {\cal N}=2,1,0 QCD. We discuss such theories with an explicit UV cutoff and propose that, by tuning higher dimension operators at the cutoff by hand, the effects of the extra matter states in the UV may be removed from the IR physics. We explicitly work in the AdS-Schwartzschild description of QCD_4 and tune the operator TrF^4 by relaxing the near horizon limit to reproduce the lattice 0^{++} glueball mass results. We find that to reproduce the lattice data, the IR and UV cutoffs lie close to each other and there is essentially no AdS-like period between them. The improved geometry gives a better match to the lattice data for 0^{-+} glueball masses.

Chiral Dynamics From AdS Space

We study the low energy dynamics of pions in a gravity dual of chiral symmetry breaking. The string theory construction consists of a probe D7 brane in the Constable Myers non-supersymmetric background, which has been shown to describe chiral symmetry breaking in the pattern of QCD. We expand the D7 brane's Dirac Born Infeld action for fluctuations that correspond to the Goldstone mode and show that they take the form of a non-linear chiral lagrangian. We numerically compute the quark condensate, pion decay constant and higher order Gasser Leutwyler coefficients. We find their form is consistent with naive dimensional analysis estimates. We also explore the gauging of the quark's chiral symmetries and the vector meson spectrum.
