Non-equilibrium Magnetization Dynamics in the Fe_8 Single-Molecule Magnet Induced by High-Intensity Microwave Radiation

Resonant microwave radiation applied to a single crystal of the molecular magnet Fe_8 induces dramatic changes in the sample's magnetization. Transitions between excited states are found even though at the nominal system temperature these levels have negligible population. We find evidence that the sample heats significantly when the resonance condition is met. In addition, heating is observed after a short pulse of intense radiation has been turned off, indicating that the spin system is out of equilibrium with the lattice.

Experimental Upper Bound on Superradiance Emission from Mn12 Acetate

We used a Josephson junction as a radiation detector to look for evidence of the emission of electromagnetic radiation during magnetization avalanches in a crystal assembly of Mn_12-Acetate. The crystal assembly exhibits avalanches at several magnetic fields in the temperature range from 1.8 to 2.6 K with durations of the order of 1 ms. Although a recent study shows evidence of electromagnetic radiation bursts during these avalanches [J. Tejada, et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. {\bf 84}, 2373 (2004)], we were unable to detect any significant radiation at well-defined frequencies. A control experiment with external radiation pulses allows us to determine that the energy released as radiation during an avalanche is less than 1 part in 10^4 of the total energy released. In addition, our avalanche data indicates that the magnetization reversal process does not occur uniformly throughout the sample.

Photon-Induced Magnetization Reversal in Single-Molecule Magnets

We use millimeter wave radiation to manipulate the populations of the energy levels of a single crystal molecular magnet Fe8. When a continuous wave radiation is in resonance with the transitions from the ground state to the first excited state, the equilibrium magnetization exhibits a dip. The position of this dip varies linearly with the radiation frequency. Our results provide a lower bound of 0.17 ns for transverse relaxation time and suggest the possibility that single-molecule magnets might be utilized for quantum computation.

Aharonov-Casher-Effect Suppression of Macroscopic Tunneling of Magnetic Flux

We suggest a system in which the amplitude of macroscopic flux tunneling can be modulated via the Aharonov-Casher effect. The system is an rf-SQUID with the Josephson junction replaced by a Bloch transistor -- two junctions separated by a small superconducting island on which the charge can be induced by an external gate voltage. When the Josephson coupling energies of the junctions are equal and the induced charge is q=e, destructive interference between tunneling paths brings the flux tunneling rate to zero. The device may also be useful as a qubit for quantum computation.

Macroscopic resonant tunneling of magnetic flux

We have developed a quantitative theory of resonant tunneling of magnetic flux between discrete macroscopically distinct quantum states in SQUID systems. The theory is based on the standard density-matrix approach. Its new elements include the discussion of the two different relaxation mechanisms that exist for the double-well potential, and description of the ``photon-assisted'' tunneling driven by external rf radiation. It is shown that in the case of coherent flux dynamics, rf radiation should lead to splitting of the peaks of resonant flux tunneling, indicating that the resonant tunneling is a convenient tool for studying macroscopic quantum coherence of flux.

Detection of a Schroedinger's Cat State in an rf-SQUID

We present experimental evidence for a coherent superposition of macroscopically distinct flux states in an rf-SQUID. When the external flux Phi_x applied to the SQUID is near 1/2 of a flux quantum Phi_0, the SQUID has two nearly degenerate configurations: the zero- and one-fluxoid states, corresponding to a few microamperes of current flowing clockwise or counterclockwise, respectively. The system is modeled as a particle in a double-well potential where each well represents a distinct fluxoid state (0 or 1) and the barrier between the wells can be controlled in situ. For low damping and a sufficiently high barrier, the system has a set of quantized energy levels localized in each well. The relative energies of these levels can be varied with Phi_x. External microwaves are used to pump the system from the well-localized ground state of one well into one of a pair of excited states nearer the top of the barrier. We spectroscopically map out the energy of these levels in the neighborhood of their degeneracy point by varying Phi_x as well as the barrier height. We find a splitting between the two states at this point, when both states are below the classical energy barrier, indicating that the system attains a coherent superposition of flux basis states that are macroscopically distinct in that their mean fluxes differ by more than 1/4 Phi_0 and their currents differ by several microamperes.

Inelastic Neutron Scattering Study of Mn_12-Acetate

We report zero-field inelastic neutron scattering experiments on a deuterated powder sample of Mn12-Acetate consisting of a large number of nominally identical spin-10 magnetic clusters. Our resolution enables us to see a series of peaks corresponding to transitions between the anisotropy levels within the spin-10 manifold. A fit to the spin Hamiltonian yields an anisotropy constant D=0.54 K and a fourth-order diagonal anisotropy coefficient A = 1.2x10^-3 K. Performed in the absence of a magnetic field, our experiments do not involve the g-values as fitting parameters, thereby yielding particularly reliable values of D and A.

Resonant Magnetization Tunneling in Mn12 Acetate: The Absence of Inhomogeneous Hyperfine Broadening

We present the results of a detailed study of the thermally-assisted-resonant-tunneling relaxation rate of Mn12 acetate as a function of an external, longitudinal magnetic field and find that the data can be fit extremely well to a Lorentzian function. No hint of inhomogeneous broadening is found, even though some is expected from the Mn nuclear hyperfine interaction. This inconsistency implies that the tunneling mechanism cannot be described simply in terms of a random hyperfine field.

Observation of Strong Coulomb Blockade in Resistively Isolated Tunnel Junctions

We report measurements of the Coulomb-blockade current in resistively isolated (R_{Isol} >> h/e^{2}) tunnel junctions for the temperature range 60mK $We report measurements of the Coulomb-blockade current in resistively isolated ($R_{Isol}\gg h/e^{2})$ tunnel junctions for the temperature range 60mK < T < 230mK where the charging energy E_{c} is much greater than the thermal energy. A zero-bias resistance R_{0} of up to 10^{4}R_{T} (the tunnel resistance of the bare junction) is obtained. For eV << E_{c}, the I-V curves for a given R_{Isol} scale as a function of V/T, with I \propto V^{α(R_{Isol})} over a range of V. The data agree well with numerical calculations of the tunneling rate that include environmental effects.
