Dual-band general Toeplitz operators

We relate dual-band general Toeplitz operators to block truncated Toeplitz operators and, via equivalence after extension, with Toeplitz operators with $4 \times 4$ matrix symbols. We discuss their norm, their kernel, Fredhomlness, invertibility and spectral properties in various situations, focusing on the spectral properties of the dual-band shift, which turns out to be considerably complex, leading to new and nontrivial connections with the boundary behaviour of the associated inner function.

Nearly invariant subspaces for shift semigroups

Let $\{T(t)\}_{t\geq0}$ be a $C_0$-semigroup on an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space; a suitable definition of near $\{T(t)^*\}_{t\geq0}$ invariance of a subspace is presented in this paper. A series of prototypical examples for minimal nearly $\{S(t)^*\}_{t\geq0}$ invariant subspaces for the shift semigroup $\{S(t)\}_{t\geq0}$ on $L^2(0,\infty)$ are demonstrated, which have close links with nearly $T_θ^*$ invariance on Hardy spaces of the unit disk for Toeplitz operators associated with an inner function $θ$. Especially, the corresponding subspaces on Hardy spaces of the right half-plane and the unit disk are related to model spaces. This work further includes a discussion on the structure of the closure of certain subspaces related to model spaces in Hardy spaces.

Nearly invariant subspaces for operators in Hilbert spaces

For a shift operator $T$ with finite multiplicity acting on a separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space we represent its nearly $T^{-1}$ invariant subspaces in terms of invariant subspaces under the backward shift. Going further, given any finite Blaschke product $B$, we give a description of the nearly $T_{B}^{-1}$ invariant subspaces for the operator $T_B$ of multiplication by $B$ in a scale of Dirichlet-type spaces.

Laplace--Carleson embeddings on model spaces and boundedness of truncated Hankel and Toeplitz operators

A characterisation is given of bounded embeddings from weighted $L^2$ spaces on bounded intervals into $L^2$ spaces on the half-plane, induced by isomorphisms given by the Laplace transform onto weighted Hardy and Bergman spaces (Zen spaces). As an application necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the boundedness of truncated Hankel and Toeplitz integral operators, including the weighted case.

Representing kernels of perturbations of Toeplitz operators by backward shift-invariant subspaces

It is well known that the kernel of a Toeplitz operator is nearly invariant under the backward shift $S^*$. This paper shows that kernels of finite-rank perturbations of Toeplitz operators are nearly $S^*$-invariant with finite defect. This enables us to apply a recent theorem by Chalendar--Gallardo--Partington to represent the kernel in terms of backward shift-invariant subspaces, which we identify in several important cases.

Kernels of unbounded Toeplitz operators and factorization of symbols

We consider kernels of unbounded Toeplitz operators in $H^p(\mathbb C^+)$ in terms of a factorization of their symbols. We study the existence of a minimal Toeplitz kernel containing a given function in $H^p(\mathbb C^+)$, we describe the kernels of Toeplitz operators whose symbol possesses a certain factorization involving two different Hardy spaces and we establish relations between the kernels of two operators whose symbols differ by a factor which corresponds, in the unit circle, to a non-integer power of $z$. We apply the results to describe the kernels of Toeplitz operators with non-vanishing piecewise continuous symbols.

$L_2$ and BIBO stability of systems with variable delays

This paper considers $L_2$ and BIBO stability and stabilization issues for systems with time-varying delays which can be of retarded or neutral type. An important role is played by a nominal system with fixed delays which are close to the time-varying ones. Under stability or stabilizability conditions of this nominal system, sufficient conditions are given in order to ensure similar properties for the system with time-varying delays.

Scalar-type kernels for block Toeplitz operators

It is shown that the kernel of a Toeplitz operator with $2\times 2$ symbol $G$ can be described exactly in terms of any given function in a very wide class, its image under multiplication by $G$, and their left inverses, if the latter exist. As a consequence, under many circumstances the kernel of a block Toeplitz operator may be described as the product of a space of scalar complex-valued functions by a fixed column vector of functions. Such kernels are said to be of scalar type, and in this paper they are studied and described explicitly in many concrete situations. Applications are given to the determination of kernels of truncated Toeplitz operators for several new classes of symbols.

Norms of truncated Toeplitz operators and numerical radii of restricted shifts

This paper gives a new approach to the calculation of the numerical radius of a restricted shift operator by linking it to the norm of a truncated Toeplitz operator (TTO), which can be be calculated by various methods. Further results on the norm of a TTO are derived, and a conjecture on the existence of continuous symbols for compact TTO is resolved.

Admissibility of diagonal state-delayed systems with a one-dimensional input space

In this paper we investigate admissibility of the control operator $B$ in a Hilbert space state-delayed dynamical system setting of the form $\dot{z}(t)=Az(t-τ)+Bu(t)$, where $A$ generates a diagonal semigroup and $u$ is a scalar input function. Our approach is based on the Laplace embedding between $L^2$ and the Hardy space. The sufficient conditions for infinite-time admissibility are stated in terms of eigenvalues of the generator and in terms of the control operator itself.

The reproducing kernel thesis for lower bounds of weighted composition operators

It is shown that the property of being bounded below (having closed range) of weighted composition operators on Hardy and Bergman spaces can be tested by their action on a set of simple test functions, including reproducing kernels. The methods used in the analysis are based on the theory of reverse Carleson embeddings.

$C_0$-semigroups of 2-isometries and Dirichlet spaces

In the context of a theorem of Richter, we establish a similarity between $C_0$-semigroups of analytic 2-isometries $\{T(t)\}_{t\geq0}$ acting on a Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ and the multiplication operator semigroup $\{M_{ϕ_t}\}_{t\geq 0}$ induced by $ϕ_t(s)=\exp (-st)$ for $s$ in the right-half plane $\mathbb{C}_+$ acting boundedly on weighted Dirichlet spaces on $\mathbb{C}_+$. As a consequence, we derive a connection with the right shift semigroup $\{S_t\}_{t\geq 0}$ $$ S_tf(x)=\left \{ \begin{array}{ll} 0 & \mbox { if }0\leq t\leq x, \\ f(x-t)& \mbox { if } x>t, \end{array} \right . $$ acting on a weighted Lebesgue space on the half line $\mathbb{R}_+$ and address some applications regarding the study of the invariant subspaces of $C_0$-semigroups of analytic 2-isometries.

On the admissibility of retarded delay systems

We investigate a Hilbert space dynamical system of the form $\dot{z}(t)=Az(t)+A_1z(t-τ)+Bu(t)$, where $A$ generates a semigroup of contractions and $A_1$ is a bounded operator, in order to determine whether the operator $B$ is admissible. Our approach is based on the Miyadera--Voigt perturbation theorem and the Weiss conjecture on admissibility of control operators for contraction semigroups. We demonstrate that the retarded delay system can be represented as a well-posed abstract Cauchy problem with a solution formed by an initially log-concave bounded semigroup.

Multipliers and equivalences between Toeplitz kernels

Multipliers between kernels of Toeplitz operators are characterised in terms of test functions (so-called maximal vectors for the kernels); these maximal vectors may easily be parametrised in terms of inner and outer factorizations. Immediate applications to model spaces are derived. The case of surjective multipliers is also analysed. These ideas are applied to describing equivalences between two Toeplitz kernels.

Toeplitz kernels and model spaces

We review some classical and more recent results concerning kernels of Toeplitz operators and their relations with model spaces, which are themselves Toeplitz kernels of a special kind. We highlight the fundamental role played by the existence of maximal vectors for every nontrivial Toeplitz kernel.

Infinite-dimensional input-to-state stability and Orlicz spaces

In this work, the relation between input-to-state stability and integral input-to-state stability is studied for linear infinite-dimensional systems with an unbounded control operator. Although a special focus is laid on the case $L^{\infty}$, general function spaces are considered for the inputs. We show that integral input-to-state stability can be characterized in terms of input-to-state stability with respect to Orlicz spaces. Since we consider linear systems, the results can also be formulated in terms of admissibility. For parabolic diagonal systems with scalar inputs, both stability notions with respect to $L^\infty$ are equivalent.

Diffusive systems and weighted Hankel operators

We consider diffusive systems, regarded as input/output systems with a kernel given as the Fourier--Borel transform of a measure in the left half-plane. Associated with these are a family of weighted Hankel integral operators, and we provide conditions for them to be bounded, Hilbert--Schmidt or nuclear, thereby generalizing results of Widom, Howland and others.
