Photon-Assisted Tunneling in a Biased Strongly Correlated Bose Gas

We study the impact of coherently generated lattice photons on an atomic Mott insulator subjected to a uniform force. Analogous to an array of tunnel-coupled and biased quantum dots, we observe sharp, interaction-shifted photon-assisted tunneling resonances corresponding to tunneling one and two lattice sites either with or against the force, and resolve multiorbital shifts of these resonances. By driving a Landau-Zener sweep across such a resonance, we realize a quantum phase transition between a paramagnet and an antiferromagnet, and observe quench dynamics when the system is tuned to the critical point. Direct extensions will produce gauge fields and site-resolved spin flips, for topological physics and quantum computing.

Vacuum-Induced Transparency

Photons are excellent information carriers but normally pass through each other without consequence. Engineered interactions between photons would enable applications from quantum information processing to simulation of condensed matter systems. Using an ensemble of cold atoms strongly coupled to an optical cavity, we demonstrate experimentally that the transmission of light through a medium may be controlled with few photons and even by the electromagnetic vacuum field. The vacuum induces a group delay of 25 ns on the input optical pulse, corresponding to a light velocity of 1600 m/s, and a transparency of 40% that increases to 80% when the resonator is filled with 10 photons. This strongly nonlinear effect provides prospects for advanced quantum devices such as photon-number-state filters.

Quantum Simulation of Antiferromagnetic Spin Chains in an Optical Lattice

Understanding exotic forms of magnetism in quantum mechanical systems is a central goal of modern condensed matter physics, with implications from high temperature superconductors to spintronic devices. Simulating magnetic materials in the vicinity of a quantum phase transition is computationally intractable on classical computers due to the extreme complexity arising from quantum entanglement between the constituent magnetic spins. Here we employ a degenerate Bose gas confined in an optical lattice to simulate a chain of interacting quantum Ising spins as they undergo a phase transition. Strong spin interactions are achieved through a site-occupation to pseudo-spin mapping. As we vary an applied field, quantum fluctuations drive a phase transition from a paramagnetic phase into an antiferromagnetic phase. In the paramagnetic phase the interaction between the spins is overwhelmed by the applied field which aligns the spins. In the antiferromagnetic phase the interaction dominates and produces staggered magnetic ordering. Magnetic domain formation is observed through both in-situ site-resolved imaging and noise correlation measurements. By demonstrating a route to quantum magnetism in an optical lattice, this work should facilitate further investigations of magnetic models using ultracold atoms, improving our understanding of real magnetic materials.

Probing the Superfluid to Mott Insulator Transition at the Single Atom Level

Quantum gases in optical lattices offer an opportunity to experimentally realize and explore condensed matter models in a clean, tunable system. We investigate the Bose-Hubbard model on a microscopic level using single atom-single lattice site imaging; our technique enables space- and time-resolved characterization of the number statistics across the superfluid-Mott insulator quantum phase transition. Site-resolved probing of fluctuations provides us with a sensitive local thermometer, allows us to identify microscopic heterostructures of low entropy Mott domains, and enables us to measure local quantum dynamics, revealing surprisingly fast transition timescales. Our results may serve as a benchmark for theoretical studies of quantum dynamics, and may guide the engineering of low entropy phases in a lattice.

Heralded single-magnon quantum memory for photon polarization states

We demonstrate a heralded quantum memory based on mapping of a photon polarization state onto a single collective-spin excitation (magnon) shared between two spatially overlapped atomic ensembles. The polarization fidelity is measured by quantum state tomography to be above 90(2)% for any input polarization, which far exceeds the classical limit of 2/3. The process also constitutes a quantum non-destructive probe that detects and regenerates a photon without touching its - potentially undetermined - polarization.

Simplified measurement of the Bell parameter within quantum mechanics

We point out that, if one accepts the validity of quantum mechanics, the Bell parameter for the polarization state of two photons can be measured in a simpler way than by the standard procedure [Clauser, Horne, Shimony, and Holt, Phys. Rev. Lett. 23, 880 (1969)]. The proposed method requires only two measurements with parallel linear-polarizer settings for Alice and Bob at 0 and 45 degrees, and yields a significantly smaller statistical error for a large Bell parameter.

Mobius transformations of polygons and partitions of 3-space

The image of a polygonal knot K under a spherical inversion of R^3 (union infinity) is a simple closed curve made of arcs of circles, having the same knot type as the mirror image of K. Suppose we reconnect the vertices of the inverted polygon with straight lines, making a new polygon. This may be a different knot type. For example, a certain 7-segment figure-8 knot can be transformed to a figure-8 knot, right and left handed trefoils, or an unknot, by selecting different inverting spheres. Which knot types can be obtained from a given original polygon K under this process? We show that for large n, almost all n-segment knot types cannot be reached from one initial n-segment polygon, using a single inversion or even the whole Mobius group. The number of knot types arising from an n-vertex polygon is bounded by the number of complementary domains of a certain system of n(n-3)/2 round 2-spheres in R^3. We show the number of domains is at most polynomial in the number of spheres. In the analysis, we obtain an exact formula for the number of complementary domains. On the other hand, the number of knot types that can be represented by n-segment polygons is exponential in n.

Total Curvature and Packing of Knots

We establish a new fundamental relationship between total curvature of knots and crossing number. If K is a smooth knot in 3-space, R the cross-section radius of a uniform tube neighborhood of K, L the arclength of K, and k the total curvature of K, then (up to a coefficient independent of K), crossing number of K < (k)(L/R). There are families of knots whose crossing numbers grow faster than either k or L/R separately. For example, the knots whose crossing numbers grow with the (4/3)-power of ropelength must have total curvature growing arbitrarily large as well.

Moebius energy of thick knots

The Moebius energy of a knot is an energy functional for smooth curves based on an idea of self-repelling. If a knot has a thick tubular neighborhood, we would intuitively expect the energy to be low. In this paper, we give explicit bounds for energy in terms of the ropelength of the knot, i.e. the ratio of the length of a thickest tube to its radius.
