The ExoMol database: molecular line lists for exoplanet and other hot atmospheres

The ExoMol database (www.exomol.com) provides extensive line lists of molecular transitions which are valid over extended temperatures ranges. The status of the current release of the database is reviewed and a new data structure is specified. This structure augments the provision of energy levels (and hence transition frequencies) and Einstein $A$ coefficients with other key properties, including lifetimes of individual states, temperature-dependent cooling functions, Landé $g$-factors, partition functions, cross sections, $k$-coefficients and transition dipoles with phase relations. Particular attention is paid to the treatment of pressure broadening parameters. The new data structure includes a definition file which provides the necessary information for utilities accessing ExoMol through its application programming interface (API). Prospects for the inclusion of new species into the database are discussed.

A global \textit{ab initio} dipole moment surface for methyl chloride

A new dipole moment surface (DMS) for methyl chloride has been generated at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVQZ(+d for Cl) level of theory. To represent the DMS, a symmetry-adapted analytic representation in terms of nine vibrational coordinates has been developed and implemented. Variational calculations of the infrared spectrum of CH$_3$Cl show good agreement with a range of experimental results. This includes vibrational transition moments, absolute line intensities of the $ν_1$, $ν_4$, $ν_5$ and $3ν_6$ bands, and a rotation-vibration line list for both CH$_{3}{}^{35}$Cl and CH$_{3}{}^{37}$Cl including states up to $J=85$ and vibrational band origins up to $4400{\,}$cm$^{-1}$. Across the spectrum band shape and structure are well reproduced and computed absolute line intensities are comparable with highly accurate experimental measurements for certain fundamental bands. We thus recommend the DMS for future use.

Accurate \textit{ab initio} vibrational energies of methyl chloride

Two new nine-dimensional potential energy surfaces (PESs) have been generated using high-level \textit{ab initio} theory for the two main isotopologues of methyl chloride, CH$_{3}{}^{35}$Cl and CH$_{3}{}^{37}$Cl. The respective PESs, CBS-35$^{\,\mathrm{HL}}$ and CBS-37$^{\,\mathrm{HL}}$, are based on explicitly correlated coupled cluster calculations with extrapolation to the complete basis set (CBS) limit, and incorporate a range of higher-level (HL) additive energy corrections to account for core-valence electron correlation, higher-order coupled cluster terms, scalar relativistic effects, and diagonal Born-Oppenheimer corrections. Variational calculations of the vibrational energy levels were performed using the computer program TROVE, whose functionality has been extended to handle molecules of the form XY$_3$Z. Fully converged energies were obtained by means of a complete vibrational basis set extrapolation. The CBS-35$^{\,\mathrm{HL}}$ and CBS-37$^{\,\mathrm{HL}}$ PESs reproduce the fundamental term values with root-mean-square errors of $0.75$ and $1.00{\,}$cm$^{-1}$ respectively. An analysis of the combined effect of the HL corrections and CBS extrapolation on the vibrational wavenumbers indicates that both are needed to compute accurate theoretical results for methyl chloride. We believe that it would be extremely challenging to go beyond the accuracy currently achieved for CH$_3$Cl without empirical refinement of the respective PESs.

ExoMol molecular line lists XXX: a complete high-accuracy line list for water

A new line list for H$_2$$^{16}$O is presented. This line list, which is called POKAZATEL, includes transitions between rotation-vibrational energy levels up to 41000 cm$^{-1}$ in energy and is the most complete to date. The potential energy surface (PES) used for producing the line list was obtained by fitting a high-quality ab initio PES to experimental energy levels with energies of 41000 cm$^{-1}$ and for rotational excitations up to $J=5$. The final line list comprises all energy levels up to 41000 cm$^{-1}$ and rotational angular momentum $J$ up to 72. An accurate ab initio dipole moment surface (DMS) was used for the calculation of line intensities and reproduces high-precision experimental intensity data with an accuracy close to 1 %. The final line list uses empirical energy levels whenever they are available, to ensure that line positions are reproduced as accurately as possible. The POKAZATEL line list contains over 5 billion transitions and is available from the ExoMol website (www.exomol.com) and the CDS database.

ExoMol line lists XXV: A hot line list for silicon sulphide, SiS

SiS has long been observed in the circumstellar medium of the carbon-rich star IRC+10216 CW Leo. Comprehensive and accurate rotation-vibrational line lists and partition functions are computed for 12 isotopologues of silicon sulphide ($^{28}$Si$^{32}$S, $^{28}$Si$^{34}$S, $^{29}$Si$^{32}$S, $^{28}$Si$^{33}$S, $^{30}$Si$^{32}$S, $^{29}$Si$^{34}$S, $^{30}$Si$^{34}$S, $^{28}$Si$^{36}$S, $^{29}$Si$^{33}$S, $^{29}$Si$^{36}$S, $^{30}$Si$^{33}$S, $^{30}$Si$^{36}$S) in its ground (X $^1Σ^+$) electronic state. The calculations employ an existing spectroscopically accurate potential energy curve (PEC) derived from experimental measurements and a newly-computed ab initio dipole moment curve (DMC). The $^{28}$Si$^{32}$S line list includes 10104 states and 91715 transitions. These line lists are available from the ExoMol website www.exomol.com and the CDS database.

ExoMol molecular line lists - XXVII: spectra of C2H4

A new line list for ethylene, $^{12}$C$_2$$^1$H$_4$ is presented. The line list is based on high level ab initio potential energy and dipole moment surfaces. The potential energy surface is refined by fitting to experimental energies. The line list covers the range up to 7000 cm$^{-1}$ (1.43 $μ$m) with all ro-vibrational transitions (50 billion) with the lower state below 5000 cm$^{-1}$ included and thus should be applicable for temperatures up to 700 K. A technique for computing molecular opacities from vibrational band intensities is proposed and used to provide temperature dependent cross sections of ethylene for shorter wavelength and higher temperatures. When combined with realistic band profiles (such as the proposed three-band model), the vibrational intensity technique offers a cheap but reasonably accurate alternative to the full ro-vibrational calculations at high temperatures and should be reliable for representing molecular opacities. The C$_2$H$_4$ line list, which is called MaYTY, is made available in electronic form from the CDS.

ExoMol line lists XXVIII: The rovibronic spectrum of AlH

A new line list for AlH is produced. The WYLLoT line list spans two electronic states $X\,{}^1Σ^+$ and $A\,{}^1Π$. A diabatic model is used to model the shallow potential energy curve of the $A\,{}^1Π$ state, which has a strong pre-dissociative character with only two bound vibrational states. Both potential energy curves are empirical and were obtained by fitting to experimentally derived energies of the $X\,{}^1Σ^+$ and $A\,{}^1Π$ electronic states using the diatomic nuclear motion codes Level and Duo. High temperature line lists plus partition functions and lifetimes for three isotopologues $^{27}$AlH, $^{27}$AlD and $^{26}$AlH were generated using ab initio dipole moments. The line lists cover both the $X$--$X$ and $A$--$X$ systems and are made available in electronic form at the CDS and ExoMol databases.

The ExoMol Atlas of Molecular Opacities

The ExoMol project is dedicated to providing molecular line lists for exoplanet and other hot atmospheres. The ExoMol procedure uses a mixture of ab initio calculations and available laboratory data. The actual line lists are generated using variational nuclear motion calculations. These line lists form the input for opacity models for cool stars and brown dwarfs as well as for radiative transport models involving exoplanets. This paper is a collection of molecular opacities for 52 molecules (130 isotopologues) at two reference temperatures, 300 K and 2000 K, using line lists from the ExoMol database. So far, ExoMol line lists have been generated for about 30 key molecular species. Other line lists are taken from external sources or from our work predating the ExoMol project. An overview of the line lists generated by ExoMol thus far is presented and used to evaluate further molecular data needs. Other line lists are also considered. The requirement for completeness within a line list is emphasized and needs for further line lists discussed.

ExoMol molecular line lists - XXVI: spectra of SH and NS

Line lists for the sulphur-containing molecules SH (the mercapto radical) and NS are computed as part of the ExoMol project. These line lists consider transitions within the $X$ ${}^2Π$ ground state for $^{32}$SH, $^{33}$SH, $^{34}$SH and $^{\text{32}}$SD, and $^{14}$N$^{32}$S, $^{14}$N$^{33}$S, $^{14}$N$^{34}$S, $^{14}$N$^{36}$S and $^{15}$N$^{32}$S. Ab initio potential energy (PEC) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) curves are computed and then improved by fitting to experimentally observed transitions. Fully ab initio dipole moment curves (DMCs) computed at high level of theory are used to produce the final line lists. For SH, our fit gives a root-mean-square (rms) error of 0.03 cm$^{-1}$ between the observed ($v_{\rm max}=4$, $J_{\rm max} = 34.5$) and calculated transitions wavenumbers; this is extrapolated such that all $X$ $^2Π$ rotational-vibrational-electronic (rovibronic) bound states are considered. For $^{\text{32}}$SH the resulting line list contains about 81000 transitions and 2300 rovibronic states, considering levels up to $v_{\rm max} = 14$ and $J_{\rm max} = 60.5$. For NS the refinement used a combination of experimentally determined frequencies and energy levels and led to an rms fitting error of 0.002 cm$^{-1}$. Each NS calculated line list includes around 2.8 million transitions and 31000 rovibronic states with a vibrational range up to $v=53$ and rotational range to $J=235.5$, which covers up to 23000 cm$^{-1}$. Both line lists should be complete for temperatures up to 5000 K. Example spectra simulated using this line list are shown and comparisons made to the existing data in the CDMS database. The line lists are available from the CDS (http://cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr) and ExoMol (www.exomol.com) data bases.

ExoCross: a general program for generating spectra from molecular line lists

ExoCross is a Fortran code for generating spectra (emission, absorption) and thermodynamic properties (partition function, specific heat etc.) from molecular line lists. Input is taken in several formats, including ExoMol and HITRAN formats. ExoCross is efficiently parallelized showing also a high degree of vectorization. It can work with several line profiles such as Doppler, Lorentzian and Voigt and support several broadening schemes. Voigt profiles are handled by several methods allowing fast and accurate simulations. Two of these methods are new. ExoCross is also capable of working with the recently proposed method of super-lines. It supports calculations of lifetimes, cooling functions, specific heats and other properties. ExoCross can be used to convert between different formats, such as HITRAN, ExoMol and Phoenix. It is capable of simulating non-LTE spectra using a simple two-temperature approach. Different electronic, vibronic or vibrational bands can be simulated separately using an efficient filtering scheme based on the quantum numbers.

High accuracy water potential energy surface for the calculation of infrared spectra

Transition intensities for small molecules such as water and CO$_2$ can now be computed with such high accuracy that they are being used to systematically replace measurements in standard databases. These calculations use high accuracy ab initio dipole moment surfaces and wavefunctions from spectroscopically-determined potential energy surfaces. Here an extra high accuracy potential energy surface (PES) of the water molecule (\hato) is produced starting from an ab initio PES which is then refined to empirical rovibrational energy levels. Variational nuclear motion calculations using this PES reproduce the fitted energy levels with a standard deviation of 0.011 \cm, approximately three times their stated uncertainty. Use of wavefunctions computed with this refined PES is found to improve the predicted transition intensities for selected (problematic) transitions. A new room temperature line list for H2(16)O is presented. It is suggested that the associated set of line intensities is the most accurate available to date for this species.

Potential energy surface, dipole moment surface and the intensity calculations for the 10 micron, 5 micron, and 3 micron bands of ozone

Monitoring ozone concentrations in the Earth's atmosphere using spectroscopic methods is a major activity which undertaken both from the ground and from space. However there are long-running issues of consistency between measurements made at infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. In addition, key O$_3$ IR bands at 10 \muu, 5 \muu\ and 3 \muu\ also yield results which differ by a few percent when used for retrievals. These problems stem from the underlying laboratory measurements of the line intensities. Here we use quantum chemical techniques, first principles electronic structure and variational nuclear-motion calculations, to address this problem. A new high-accuracy \ai\ dipole moment surface (DMS) is computed. Several spectroscopically-determined potential energy surfaces (PESs) are constructed by fitting to empirical energy levels in the region below 7000 \cm\ starting from an \ai\ PES. Nuclear motion calculations using these new surfaces allow the unambiguous determination of the intensities of 10 \muu\ band transitions, and the computation of the intensities of 10 \muu\ and 5 \muu\ bands within their experimental error. A decrease in intensities within the 3 \muu\ is predicted which appears consistent with atmospheric retrievals. The PES and DMS form a suitable starting point both for the computation of comprehensive ozone line lists and for future calculations of electronic transition intensities

Electron-impact excitation of diatomic hydride cations II: OH$^+$ and SH$^+$

R-matrix calculations combined with the adiabatic-nuclei-rotation and Coulomb-Born approximations are used to compute electron-impact rotational rate coefficients for two open-shell diatomic cations of astrophysical interest: the hydoxyl and sulphanyl ions, OH$^+$ and SH$^+$. Hyperfine resolved rate coefficients are deduced using the infinite-order-sudden approximation. The propensity rule $ΔF=Δj=ΔN=\pm 1$ is observed, as is expected for cations with a large dipole moment. A model for OH$^+$ excitation in the Orion Bar photon-dominated region (PDR) is presented which nicely reproduces Herschel observations for an electron fraction $x_e=10^{-4}$ and an OH$^+$ column density of $3\times 10^{13}$~cm$^{-2}$. Electron impact electronic excitation cross sections and rate coefficients for the ions are also presented.

Cross Sections for Electron Collisions with NF$_3$

Cross section data are compiled from the literature for electron collisions with nitrogen trifluoride (NF$_3$) molecules. Cross sections are collected and reviewed for total scattering, elastic scattering, momentum transfer, excitations of rotational and vibrational states, dissociation, ionization, and dissociative attachment. For each of these processes, the recommended values of the cross sections are presented. The literature has been surveyed up to the end of 2016.

An experimental water line list at 1950 K in the 6250 -- 6670 \cm\ region

An absorption spectrum of H$_2$$^{16}$O at 1950 K is recorded in a premixed methane/air flat flame using a cavity-enhanced optical frequency comb-based Fourier transform spectrometer. 2417 absorption lines are identified in the 6250 -- 6670 cm region with an accuracy of about 0.01 cm. Absolute line intensities are retrieved using temperature and concentration values obtained by tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy. Line assignments are made using a combination of empirically known energy levels and predictions from the new POKAZATEL variational line list. 2030 of the observed lines are assigned to 2937 transitions, once blends are taken into account. 126 new energy levels of H$_2$$^{16}$O are identified. The assigned transitions belong to 136 bands and span rotational states up to $J=27$.

ExoMol line lists XXIV: A new hot line list for silicon monohydride, SiH

SiH has long been observed in the spectrum of our Sun and other cool stars. Computed line lists for the main isotopologues of silicon monohydride, $^{28}$SiH, $^{29}$SiH, $^{30}$SiH and $^{28}$SiD are presented. These line lists consider rotation-vibration transitions within the ground $X$ $^{2}Π$ electronic state as well as transitions to the low-lying $A$ $^{2}Δ$ and $a$ $^{4}Σ^-$ states. Ab initio potential energy (PECs) and dipole moment curves (DMCs) along with spin-orbit and electronic-angular-momentum couplings between them are calculated using the MRCI level of theory with the MOLPRO package. The PEC for the ground X $^2Π$ state is refined to available experimental data with a typical accuracy of around 0.01 cm$^{-1}$ or better. The $^{28}$SiH line list includes 11,785 rovibronic states and 1,724,841 transitions with associated Einstein-A coefficients for angular momentum $J$ up to $82.5$ and covering wavenumbers up to 31340 cm$^{-1}$ ($λ$ $<$ 0.319 $μ$m). Spectra are simulated using the new line list and comparisons made with various experimental spectra. These line lists are applicable up to temperatures of ~5000 K, making them relevant to astrophysical objects such as exoplanetary atmospheres and cool stars and opening up the possibility of detection in the interstellar medium. These line lists are available at the ExoMol www.exomol.com and CDS database websites.

High accuracy calculations of the rotation-vibration spectrum of H$_3^+$

Calculation of the rotation-vibration spectrum of H3+, as well as of its deuterated isotopologues, with near-spectroscopic accuracy requires the development of sophisticated theoretical models, methods, and codes. The present paper reviews the state-of-the-art in these fields. Computation of rovibrational states on a given potential energy surface (PES) has now become standard for triatomic molecules, at least up to intermediate energies, due to developments achieved by the present authors and others. However, highly accurate Born--Oppenheimer energies leading to highly accurate PESs are not accessible even for this two-electron system using conventional electronic structure procedures e.g., configuration-interaction or coupled-cluster techniques with extrapolation to the complete basis set limit). For this purpose highly specialized techniques must be used, e.g., those employing explicitly correlated Gaussians and nonlinear parameter optimizations. It has also become evident that a very dense grid of \ai\ points is required to obtain reliable representations of the computed points extending from the minimum to the asymptotic limits. Furthermore, adiabatic, relativistic, and QED correction terms need to be considered to achieve near-spectroscopic accuracy during calculation of the rotation-vibration spectrum of H3+. The remaining and most intractable problem is then the treatment of the effects of non-adiabatic coupling on the rovibrational energies, which, in the worst cases, may lead to corrections on the order of several \cm. A promising way of handling this difficulty is the further development of effective, motion- or even coordinate-dependent, masses and mass surfaces. Finally, the unresolved challenge of how to describe and elucidate the experimental pre-dissociation spectra of H$_3^+$ and its isotopologues is discussed.

MARVEL analysis of the measured high-resolution rovibrational spectra of C2H2

Rotation-vibration energy levels are determined for the electronic ground state of the acetylene molecule, $^{12}$C$_2$H$_2$, using the Measured Active Rotational-Vibrational Energy Levels (MARVEL) technique. 37,813 measured transitions from 61 publications are considered. The distinct components of the spectroscopic network linking ortho and para states are considered separately. The 20,717 ortho and 17,096 para transitions measured experimentally are used to determine 6013 ortho and 5200 para energy levels. The MARVEL results are compared with alternative compilations based on the use of effective Hamiltonians.
