Desingularizing $b^m$-symplectic structures

A $2n$-dimensional Poisson manifold $(M ,Π)$ is said to be $b^m$-symplectic if it is symplectic on the complement of a hypersurface $Z$ and has a simple Darboux canonical form at points of $Z$ which we will describe below. In this paper we will discuss a desingularization procedure which, for $m$ even, converts $Π$ into a family of symplectic forms $ω_ε$ having the property that $ω_ε$ is equal to the $b^m$-symplectic form dual to $Π$ outside an $ε$-neighborhood of $Z$ and, in addition, converges to this form as $ε$ tends to zero in a sense that will be made precise in the theorem below. We will then use this construction to show that a number of somewhat mysterious properties of $b^m$-manifolds can be more clearly understood by viewing them as limits of analogous properties of the $ω_ε$'s. We will also prove versions of these results for $m$ odd; however, in the odd case the family $ω_ε$ has to be replaced by a family of folded symplectic forms.

On geometric quantization of $b$-symplectic manifolds

We study a notion of pre-quantization for $b$-symplectic manifolds. We use it to construct a formal geometric quantization of $b$-symplectic manifolds equipped with Hamiltonian torus actions with nonzero modular weight. We show that these quantizations are finite dimensional $T$-modules.

Geometry of the intersection ring and vanishing relations in the cohomology of the moduli space of parabolic bundles on a curve

We study the ring generated by the Chern classes of tautological line bundles on the moduli space of parabolic bundles of arbitrary rank on a Riemann surface. We show the Poincaré duals to these Chern classes have simple geometric representatives. We use this construction to show that the ring generated by these Chern classes vanishes below the dimension of the moduli space, in analogy with the Newstead-Ramanan conjecture for stable bundles.

Morse Theory and Hyperkahler Kirwan Surjectivity for Higgs Bundles

This paper uses Morse-theoretic techniques to compute the equivariant Betti numbers of the space of semistable rank two degree zero Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface, a method in the spirit of Atiyah and Bott's original approach for semistable holomorphic bundles. This leads to a natural proof that the hyperkähler Kirwan map is surjective for the non-fixed determinant case.

Fermionization and Convergent Perturbation Expansions in Chern-Simons Gauge Theory

We show that Chern-Simons gauge theory with appropriate cutoffs is equivalent, term by term in perturbation theory, to a Fermionic theory with a nonlocal interaction term. When an additional cutoff is placed on the Fermi fields, this Fermionic theory gives rise to a convergent perturbation expansion. This leads us to conjecture that Chern-Simons gauge theory also gives rise to convergent perturbation expansions, which would give a mathematically well-defined construction of the theory.

Fermionization, Convergent Perturbation Theory, and Correlations in the Yang-Mills Quantum Field Theory in Four Dimensions

We show that the Yang-Mills quantum field theory with momentum and spacetime cutoffs in four Euclidean dimensions is equivalent, term by term in an appropriately resummed perturbation theory, to a Fermionic theory with nonlocal interaction terms. When a further momentum cutoff is imposed, this Fermionic theory has a convergent perturbation expansion. To zeroth order in this perturbation expansion, the correlation function $E(x,y)$ of generic components of pairs of connections is given by an explicit, finite-dimensional integral formula, which we conjecture will behave as $$E(x,y) \sim |x - y|^{-2 - 2 d_G},$$ \noindent for $|x-y|>>0,$ where $d_G$ is a positive integer depending on the gauge group $G.$ In the case where $G=SU(n),$ we conjecture that $$d_G = {\rm dim}SU(n) - {\rm dim}S(U(n-1) \times U(1)),$$ \noindent so that the rate of decay of correlations increases as $n \to \infty.$

Exact Euler Maclaurin formulas for simple lattice polytopes

Euler Maclaurin formulas for a polytope express the sum of the values of a function over the lattice points in the polytope in terms of integrals of the function and its derivatives over faces of the polytope or its expansions. Exact Euler Maclaurin formulas [Khovanskii-Pukhlikov, Cappell-Shaneson, Guillemin, Brion-Vergne] apply to exponential or polynomial functions; Euler Maclaurin formulas with remainder [Karshon-Sternberg-Weitsman] apply to more general smooth functions. In this paper we review these results and present proofs of the exact formulas obtained by these authors, using elementary methods. We then use an algebraic formalism due to Cappell and Shaneson to relate the different formulas.

Measures on Banach Manifolds and Supersymmetric Quantum Field Theory

We show how to construct measures on Banach manifolds associated to supersymmetric quantum field theories. These measures are mathematically well-defined objects inspired by the formal path integrals appearing in the physics literature on quantum field theory. We give three concrete examples of our construction. The first example is a family $μ_P^{s,t}$ of measures on a space of functions on the two-torus, parametrized by a polynomial $P$ (the Wess-Zumino-Landau-Ginzburg model). The second is a family $μ_\cG^{s,t}$ of measures on a space $\cG$ of maps from $¶^1$ to a Lie group (the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model). Finally we study a family $μ_{M,G}^{s,t}$ of measures on the product of a space of connection s on the trivial principal bundle with structure group $G$ on a three-dimensional manifold $M$ with a space of $\fg$-valued three-forms on $M.$ We show that these measures are positive, and that the measures $μ_\cG^{s,t}$ are Borel probability measures. As an application we show that formulas arising from expectations in the measures $μ_\cG^{s,1}$ reproduce formulas discovered by Frenkel and Zhu in the theory of vertex operator algebras. We conjecture that a similar computation for the measures $μ_{M,SU(2)}^{s,t},$ where $M$ is a homology three-sphere, will yield the Casson invariant of $M.$

The Weighted Euler-Maclaurin Formula for a simple integral polytope

We give an Euler-Maclaurin formula with remainder for the weighted sum of the values of a smooth function on the integral points in a simple integral polytope. Our work generalizes the formula obtained by Karshon, Sternberg and Weitsman in the ''Euler-Maclaurin with remainder for a simple integral polytope''.

Surjectivity for Hamiltonian Loop Group Spacees

Let $G$ be a compact Lie group, and let $LG$ denote the corresponding loop group. Let $(X,ω)$ be a weakly symplectic Banach manifold. Consider a Hamiltonian action of $LG$ on $(X,ω)$, and assume that the moment map $μ: X \to L\fg^*$ is proper. We consider the function $|μ|^2: X \to \R$, and use a version of Morse theory to show that the inclusion map $j:μ^{-1}(0)\to X$ induces a surjection $j^*:H_G^*(X) \to H_G^*(μ^{-1}(0))$, in analogy with Kirwan's surjectivity theorem in the finite-dimensional case. We also prove a version of this surjectivity theorem for quasi-Hamiltonian $G$-spaces.

On the cohomology rings of Hamiltonian T-spaces

Let $M$ be a symplectic manifold equipped with a Hamiltonian action of a torus $T$. Let $F$ denote the fixed point set of the $T$-action and let $i:F\hookrightarrow M$ denote the inclusion. By a theorem of F. Kirwan \cite{K} the induced map $i^*:H_T^*(M) \to H_T^*(F)$ in equivariant cohomology is an injection. We give a simple proof of a formula of Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson \cite{GKM} for the image of the map $i^*$.

On semifree symplectic circle actions with isolated fixed points

Let $M$ be a symplectic manifold, equipped with a semifree symplectic circle action with a finite, nonempty fixed point set. We show that the circle action must be Hamiltonian, and $M$ must have the equivariant cohomology and Chern classes of $(P^1)^n$.

The cohomology rings of abelian symplectic quotients

Let $M$ be a symplectic manifold, equipped with a Hamiltonian action of a torus $T$. We give an explicit formula for the rational cohomology ring of the symplectic quotient $M//T$ in terms of the cohomology ring of $M$ and fixed point data. Under some restrictions, our formulas apply to integral cohomology. In certain cases these methods enable us to show that the cohomology of the reduced space is torsion-free.
