The area is a good enough metric

In the first part we extend the construction of the smooth normal-crossing divisors compactification of projectivized strata of abelian differentials given by Bainbridge, Chen, Gendron, Grushevsky and Moeller to the case of k-differentials. Since the generalized construction is closely related to the original one, we mainly survey their results and justify the details that need to be adapted in the more general context. In the second part we show that the flat area provides a canonical hermitian metric on the tautological bundle over the projectivized strata of finite area k-differentials whose curvature form represents the first Chern class. This result is useful in order to apply Chern-Weyl theory tools. It has already been used as an assumption in the work of Sauvaget for abelian differentials and is also used in a paper of Chen, Möller and Sauvaget for quadratic differentials.

The Chern classes and the Euler characteristic of the moduli spaces of abelian differentials

For the moduli spaces of Abelian differentials, the Euler characteristic is one of the most basic intrinsic topological invariants. We give a formula for the Euler characteristic that relies on intersection theory on the smooth compactification by multi-scale differentials. It is a consequence of a formula for the full Chern polynomial of the cotangent bundle of the compactification. The main new technical tools are an Euler sequence for the cotangent bundle of the moduli space of Abelian differentials and computational tools in the Chow ring, such as normal bundles to boundary divisors.

diffstrata -- a Sage package for calculations in the tautological ring of the moduli space of Abelian differentials

The boundary of the multi-scale differential compactification of strata of abelian differentials admits an explicit combinatorial description. However, even for low-dimensional strata, the complexity of the boundary requires use of a computer. We give a description of the algorithms implemented in the SageMath package diffstrata to enumerate the boundary components and perform intersection theory on this space. In particular, the package can compute the Euler characteristic of strata using the methods developed by the same authors in [CMZ20].

Orbifold points on Prym-Teichmüller curves in genus four

For each discriminant $D>1$, McMullen constructed the Prym-Teichmüller curves $W_D(4)$ and $W_D(6)$ in $\mathcal{M}_{3}$ and $\mathcal{M}_{4}$, which constitute one of the few known infinite families of geometrically primitive Teichmüller curves. In the present paper, we determine for each $D$ the number and type of orbifold points on $W_D(6)$. These results, together with a previous result of the two authors in the genus $3$ case and with results of Lanneau-Nguyen and Möller, complete the topological characterisation of all Prym-Teichmüller curves and determine their genus. The study of orbifold points relies on the analysis of intersections of $W_D(6)$ with certain families of genus $4$ curves with extra automorphisms. As a side product of this study, we give an explicit construction of such families and describe their Prym-Torelli images, which turn out to be isomorphic to certain products of elliptic curves. We also give a geometric description of the flat surfaces associated to these families and describe the asymptotics of the genus of $W_D(6)$ for large $D$.

The Galois Action and a Spin Invariant for Prym-Teichmüller Curves in Genus 3

Given a Prym-Teichmüller curve in $\mathcal{M}_3$, this note provides an invariant that sorts the cusp prototypes of Lanneau and Nguyen by component. This can be seen as an analogue of McMullen's genus $2$ spin invariant, although the source of this invariant is different. Moreover, we describe the Galois action on the cusps of these Teichmüller curves, extending the results of Bouw and Möller in genus $2$. We use this to show that the components of the genus $3$ Prym-Teichmüller curves are homeomorphic.

Orbifold points on Prym-Teichmüller curves in genus three

Prym-Teichmüller curves $W_D(4)$ constitute the main examples of known primitive Teichmüller curves in the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_3$. We determine, for each non-square discriminant $D>1$, the number and type of orbifold points in $W_D(4)$. These results, together with the formulas of Lanneau-Nguyen and Möller for the number of cusps and the Euler characteristic, complete the topological characterisation of Prym-Teichmüller curves in genus 3. Crucial for the determination of the orbifold points is the analysis of families of genus 3 cyclic covers of degree $4$ and $6$, branched over four points of $\mathbb{P}^1$. As a side product of our study, we provide an explicit description of the Jacobians and the Prym-Torelli images of these two families, together with a description of the corresponding flat surfaces.
