Coherent Magnons Driven by Photomodulated Anisotropy in Altermagnetic MnTe

Manganese telluride ($\text{MnTe}$) has recently emerged as a prototypical $g$-wave altermagnet, providing an ideal platform to investigate the non-equilibrium excitations of altermagnetic order. Here, we report simultaneous spatial mapping of the local equilibrium orientation of the N\'eel vector, $\varphi_L(\mathbf{r})$, alongside the amplitude, $\Delta\varphi(\mathbf{r},t)$, and frequency, $\Omega(\mathbf{r})$, of photoexcited spin waves. Based on these measurements, we place a remarkably low upper bound of $\approx 60~\mu\text{eV}$ (0.7 K) on the spin-wave gap arising from intrinsic anisotropy. This exceptionally weak hexagonal anisotropy ($K_6$) renders the altermagnetic order highly susceptible to optical tuning, allowing coherent spin waves to be driven by a photoinduced enhancement of $K_6$. Above a threshold pump fluence, our spatial maps reveal that this photomodulation manifests as a six-fold symmetric sawtooth dependence of $\Delta\varphi$ on $\varphi_L$ and a cycloid-like modulation of $\Omega$. Ultimately, the near-isotropy of the N\'eel vector in $\text{MnTe}$ enables optical and mechanical control over the orientation of spin-splitting in the electronic band structure, offering new pathways for altermagnetic spintronics.

Anisotropic Multi-Q Order in CoxTaS2

The cobalt-intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide Co$_x$TaS$_2$ hosts a rich landscape of magnetic phases that depend sensitively on $x$. While the stoichiometric compound with $x=1/3$ exhibits a single magnetic transition, samples with $x\leq 0.325$ display two transitions with an anomalous Hall effect (AHE) emerging in the lower temperature phase. Here, we resolve the spin structure in each phase by employing a suite of magneto-optical probes that include the discovery of anomalous magneto-birefringence -- a spontaneous time-reversal sensitive rotation of the principal optic axes. A symmetry-based analysis identifies the AHE-active phase as an anisotropic (2+1)\textbf{Q} state, in which magnetic modulation at one wavevector (\textbf{Q}) differs in symmetry from that at the remaining two. The (2+1)\textbf{Q} state naturally exhibits scalar spin chirality as a mechanism for the AHE and expands the classification of multi-Q magnetic phases.

Phase control of magnons in the van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS$_3$

We demonstrate phase control of magnons in the van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS$_3$ using optical excitation by polarized light. The sign of the coherent precession of spin amplitude changes upon (1) reversing the helicity of a circularly polarized pump beam, or (2) rotating the polarization of a linearly polarized pump by $π/2$. Because these two excitation pathways have comparable generation efficiency, the phase of spin precession can be continuously tuned from 0 to $2π$ by controlling the polarization state of the pump pulse. The ability to excite magnons with a desired phase has potential applications in the design of a spin-wave phased array and ultrafast spin information processing.
