Toward a geometric construction of fake projective planes

We give a criterion for a projective surface to become a quotient of a fake projective plane. We also give a detailed information on the elliptic fibration of a $(2,3)$-elliptic surface that is the minimal resolution of a quotient of a fake projective plane. As a consequence, we give a classification of ${\mathbb Q}$-homology projective planes with cusps only.

Algebraic Montgomery-Yang Problem: the non-rational case and the del Pezzo case

Montgomery-Yang problem predicts that every pseudofree differentiable circle action on the 5-dimensional sphere has at most 3 non-free orbits. Using a certain one-to-one correspondence, Kollár formulated the algebraic version of the Montgomery-Yang problem: every projective surface $S$ with the second Betti number $b_2(S) = 1$ and with quotient singularities only has at most 3 singular points if its smooth locus $S^0$ is simply-connected. In a previous paper, we have confirmed the conjecture when $S$ has at least one non-cyclic quotient singularity. In this paper, we prove the conjecture either when $S$ is not rational or when $-K_S$ is ample.

Constructions of singular rational surfaces of Picard number one with ample canonical divisor

Kollár gave a series of examples of rational surfaces of Picard number $1$ with ample canonical divisor having cyclic singularities. In this paper, we construct several series of new examples in a geometric way, i.e., by blowing up several times inside a configuration of curves on the projective plane and then by contracting chains of rational curves. One series of our examples have the same singularities as Kollár's examples.

Projective surfaces with many nodes

The paper is a generalization of a result of I. Dolgachev, M. Mendes Lopes, and R. Pardini. We prove that a smooth projective complex surface $X$, not necessarily minimal, contains $h^{1,1}(X)-1$ disjoint $(-2)$-curves if and only if $X$ is isomorphic to a minimal rational ruled surface ${\bf F}_2$ or ${\bf P}^2$ or a fake projective plane. We also describe smooth projective complex surfaces $X$ with $h^{1,1}(X)-2$ disjoint $(-2)$-curves.

The maximum number of singular points on rational homology projective planes

A normal projective complex surface is called a rational homology projective plane if it has the same Betti numbers with the complex projective plane $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^2$. It is known that a rational homology projective plane with quotient singularities has at most 5 singular points. So far all known examples have at most 4 singular points. In this paper, we prove that a rational homology projective plane $S$ with quotient singularities such that $K_S$ is nef has at most 4 singular points except one case. The exceptional case comes from Enriques surfaces with a configuration of 9 smooth rational curves whose Dynkin diagram is of type $ 3A_1 \oplus 2A_3$. We also obtain a similar result in the differentiable case and in the symplectic case under certain assumptions which all hold in the algebraic case.

Quotients of fake projective planes

Recently, Prasad and Yeung classified all possible fundamental groups of fake projective planes. According to their result, many fake projective planes admit a nontrivial group of automorphisms, and in that case it is isomorphic to $\bbZ/3\bbZ$, $\bbZ/7\bbZ$, $7:3$, or $(\bbZ/3\bbZ)^2$, where $7:3$ is the unique non-abelian group of order 21. Let $G$ be a group of automorphisms of a fake projective plane $X$. In this paper we classify all possible structures of the quotient surface $X/G$ and its minimal resolution.

Conjecture of Tits type for complex varieties and Theorem of Lie-Kolchin type for a cone

First, we shall formulate and prove Theorem of Lie-Kolchin type for a cone and derive some algebro-geometric consequences. Next, inspired by a recent result of Dinh and Sibony we pose a conjecture of Tits type for a group of automorphisms of a complex variety and verify its weaker version. Finally, applying Theorem of Lie-Kolchin type for a cone, we shall confirm the conjecture of Tits type for complex tori, hyperkähler manifolds, surfaces, and minimal threefolds.

A rationality criterion for projective surfaces - partial solution to Kollar's conjecture

Kollár's conjecture states that a complex projective surface $S$ with quotient singularities and with $H^2(S,\bbQ)\cong \bbQ$ should be rational if its smooth part $S^0$ is simply connected. We confirm the conjecture under the additional condition that the exceptional divisor in a minimal resolution of $S$ has at most 3 components over each singular point of $S$.

A Fake Projective Plane with an order 7 automorphism

A fake projective plane is a compact complex manifold of dimension 2 which has the same Betti numbers as the complex projective plane, but not isomorphic to the complex projective plane. As was shown by D. Mumford, there exists at least one such surface. In this paper we prove the existence of a fake projective plane which is birational to a cyclic cover of degree 7 of a Dolgachev surface.

Finite groups of symplectic automorphisms of K3 surfaces in positive characteristic

We show that Mukai's classification of finite groups which may act symplectically on a complex K3 surface extends to positive characteristic $p$ under the assumptions that (i) the order of the group is coprime to $p$ and (ii) either the surface or its quotient is not birationally isomorphic to a supersingular K3 surface with Artin invariant 1. In the case without the assumption (ii) we classify all possible new groups which may appear. We prove that the assumption on the order of the group is always satisfied if $p > 11$ and if $p=2,3,5,11$ we give examples of K3 surfaces with finite symplectic automorphism groups of order divisible by $p$ which are not contained in Mukai's list.

K3 surfaces with a symplectic automorphism of order 11

We classify possible finite groups of symplectic automorphisms of K3 surfaces of order divisible by 11. The characteristic of the ground field must be equal to 11. The complete list of such groups consists of five groups: the cyclic group of order 11, $11\rtimes 5$, $L_2(11)$ and the Mathieu groups $M_{11}$, $M_{22}$. We also show that a surface $X$ admitting an automorphism $g$ of order 11 admits a $g$-invariant elliptic fibration with the Jacobian fibration isomorphic to one of explicitly given elliptic K3 surfaces.

The Alternating Group of degree 6 in Geometry of the Leech Lattice and K3 Surfaces

The alternating group of degree 6 is located at the junction of three series of simple non-commutative groups : simple sporadic groups, alternating groups and simple groups of Lie type. It plays a very special role in the theory of finite groups. We shall study its new roles both in a finite geometry of certain pentagon in the Leech lattice and also in a complex algebraic geometry of $K3$ surfaces.

Some remarks on the universal cover of an open K3 surface

We shall give, in an optimal form, a sufficient numerical condition for the finiteness of the fundamental group of the smooth locus of a normal K3 surface. We shall moreover prove that, if the normal K3 surface is elliptic and the above fundamental group is not finite, then there is a finite covering which is a complex torus.
