Unravelling the Innermost Jet Structure of OJ 287 with the First GMVA+ALMA Observations

We present the first very-long-baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations of the blazar OJ287 carried out jointly with the Global Millimeter VLBI Array (GMVA) and the phased Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at 3.5 mm on April 2, 2017. Participation of phased-ALMA not only has improved the GMVA north-south resolution by a factor of ~3, but also has enabled fringe detection with signal-to-noise ratios up to 300 at baselines longer than 2 Gλ. The high sensitivity has motivated us to image the data with the newly developed regularized maximum likelihood imaging methods, revealing the innermost jet structure with unprecedentedly high angular resolution. Our images reveal a compact and twisted jet extending along the northwest direction with two bends within the inner 200 μas that resembles a precessing jet in projection. The component at the southeastern end shows a compact morphology and high brightness temperature, and is identified as the VLBI core. An extended jet feature that lies at ~200 μas northwest of the core shows a conical shape in both total and linearly polarized intensity, and a bimodal distribution of the linear polarization electric vector position angle. We discuss the nature of this feature by comparing our observations with models and simulations of oblique and recollimation shocks with various magnetic field configurations. Our high-fidelity images also enabled us to search for possible jet features from the secondary supermassive black hole (SMBH) and test the SMBH binary hypothesis proposed for this source.

Fast Gradient Methods for Uniformly Convex and Weakly Smooth Problems

In this paper, acceleration of gradient methods for convex optimization problems with weak levels of convexity and smoothness is considered. Starting from the universal fast gradient method which was designed to be an optimal method for weakly smooth problems whose gradients are Hölder continuous, its momentum is modified appropriately so that it can also accommodate uniformly convex and weakly smooth problems. Different from the existing works, fast gradient methods proposed in this paper do not use the restarting technique but use momentums that are suitably designed to reflect both the uniform convexity and the weak smoothness information of the target energy function. Both theoretical and numerical results that support the superiority of proposed methods are presented.

ReLU Regression with Massart Noise

We study the fundamental problem of ReLU regression, where the goal is to fit Rectified Linear Units (ReLUs) to data. This supervised learning task is efficiently solvable in the realizable setting, but is known to be computationally hard with adversarial label noise. In this work, we focus on ReLU regression in the Massart noise model, a natural and well-studied semi-random noise model. In this model, the label of every point is generated according to a function in the class, but an adversary is allowed to change this value arbitrarily with some probability, which is {\em at most} $η< 1/2$. We develop an efficient algorithm that achieves exact parameter recovery in this model under mild anti-concentration assumptions on the underlying distribution. Such assumptions are necessary for exact recovery to be information-theoretically possible. We demonstrate that our algorithm significantly outperforms naive applications of $\ell_1$ and $\ell_2$ regression on both synthetic and real data.

The intrinsic structure of Sagittarius A* at 1.3 cm and 7 mm

Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), the Galactic Center supermassive black hole (SMBH), is one of the best targets to resolve the innermost region of SMBH with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). In this study, we have carried out observations toward Sgr A* at 1.349 cm (22.223 GHz) and 6.950 mm (43.135 GHz) with the East Asian VLBI Network, as a part of the multi-wavelength campaign of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) in 2017 April. To mitigate scattering effects, the physically motivated scattering kernel model from Psaltis et al. (2018) and the scattering parameters from Johnson et al. (2018) have been applied. As a result, a single, symmetric Gaussian model well describes the intrinsic structure of Sgr A* at both wavelengths. From closure amplitudes, the major-axis sizes are ~704$\pm$102 $μ$as (axial ratio $\sim$1.19$^{+0.24}_{-0.19}$) and $\sim$300$\pm$25 $μ$as (axial ratio $\sim$1.28$\pm$0.2) at 1.349 cm and 6.95 mm respectively. Together with a quasi-simultaneous observation at 3.5 mm (86 GHz) by Issaoun et al. (2019), we show that the intrinsic size scales with observing wavelength as a power-law, with an index $\sim$1.2$\pm$0.2. Our results also provide estimates of the size and compact flux density at 1.3 mm, which can be incorporated into the analysis of the EHT observations. In terms of the origin of radio emission, we have compared the intrinsic structures with the accretion flow scenario, especially the radiatively inefficient accretion flow based on the Keplerian shell model. With this, we show that a nonthermal electron population is necessary to reproduce the source sizes.

Additive Schwarz Methods for Convex Optimization with Backtracking

This paper presents a novel backtracking strategy for additive Schwarz methods for general convex optimization problems as an acceleration scheme. The proposed backtracking strategy is independent of local solvers, so that it can be applied to any algorithms that can be represented in an abstract framework of additive Schwarz methods. Allowing for adaptive increasing and decreasing of the step size along the iterations, the convergence rate of an algorithm is greatly improved. Improved convergence rate of the algorithm is proven rigorously. In addition, combining the proposed backtracking strategy with a momentum acceleration technique, we propose a further accelerated additive Schwarz method. Numerical results for various convex optimization problems that support our theory are presented.

Two-level Group Convolution

Group convolution has been widely used in order to reduce the computation time of convolution, which takes most of the training time of convolutional neural networks. However, it is well known that a large number of groups significantly reduce the performance of group convolution. In this paper, we propose a new convolution methodology called ``two-level'' group convolution that is robust with respect to the increase of the number of groups and suitable for multi-GPU parallel computation. We first observe that the group convolution can be interpreted as a one-level block Jacobi approximation of the standard convolution, which is a popular notion in the field of numerical analysis. In numerical analysis, there have been numerous studies on the two-level method that introduces an intergroup structure that resolves the performance degradation issue without disturbing parallel computation. Motivated by these, we introduce a coarse-level structure which promotes intergroup communication without being a bottleneck in the group convolution. We show that all the additional work induced by the coarse-level structure can be efficiently processed in a distributed memory system. Numerical results that verify the robustness of the proposed method with respect to the number of groups are presented. Moreover, we compare the proposed method to various approaches for group convolution in order to highlight the superiority of the proposed method in terms of execution time, memory efficiency, and performance.

Accelerated Additive Schwarz Methods for Convex Optimization with Adaptive Restart

Based on an observation that additive Schwarz methods for general convex optimization can be interpreted as gradient methods, we propose an acceleration scheme for additive Schwarz methods. Adopting acceleration techniques developed for gradient methods such as momentum and adaptive restarting, the convergence rate of additive Schwarz methods is greatly improved. The proposed acceleration scheme does not require any a priori information on the levels of smoothness and sharpness of a target energy functional, so that it can be applied to various convex optimization problems. Numerical results for linear elliptic problems, nonlinear elliptic problems, nonsmooth problems, and nonsharp problems are provided to highlight the superiority and the broad applicability of the proposed scheme.

A revised view of the linear polarization in the subparsec core of M87 at 7 mm

The linear polarization images of the jet in the giant elliptical galaxy M87 have previously been observed with Very Long Baseline Array at 7 mm. They exhibit a complex polarization structure surrounding the optically thick and compact subparsec-scale core. However, given the low level of linear polarization in the core, it is required to verify that this complex structure does not originate from residual instrumental polarization signals in the data. We have performed a new analysis of the same data sets observed in four epochs by using the Generalized Polarization CALibration pipeline (GPCAL). This novel instrumental polarization calibration pipeline overcomes the limitations of LPCAL, a conventional calibration tool used in the previous M87 studies. The resulting images show a compact linear polarization structure with its peak nearly coincident with the total intensity peak, which is significantly different from the results of previous studies. The core linear polarization is characterized as fractional polarization of $\sim0.2-0.6$% and polarization angles of $\sim66-92^\circ$, showing moderate variability. We demonstrate that, based on tests with synthetic data sets, LPCAL using calibrators having complex polarization structures cannot achieve sufficient calibration accuracy to obtain the true polarization image of M87 due to a breakdown of the "similarity approximation". We find that GPCAL obtains more accurate D-terms than LPCAL by using observed closure traces of calibrators that are insensitive to both antenna gain and polarization leakage corruptions. This study suggests that polarization imaging of very weakly polarized sources has become possible with the advanced instrumental polarization calibration techniques.

On Robust Mean Estimation under Coordinate-level Corruption

We study the problem of robust mean estimation and introduce a novel Hamming distance-based measure of distribution shift for coordinate-level corruptions. We show that this measure yields adversary models that capture more realistic corruptions than those used in prior works, and present an information-theoretic analysis of robust mean estimation in these settings. We show that for structured distributions, methods that leverage the structure yield information theoretically more accurate mean estimation. We also focus on practical algorithms for robust mean estimation and study when data cleaning-inspired approaches that first fix corruptions in the input data and then perform robust mean estimation can match the information theoretic bounds of our analysis. We finally demonstrate experimentally that this two-step approach outperforms structure-agnostic robust estimation and provides accurate mean estimation even for high-magnitude corruption.

A variational framework for the strain-smoothed element method

This paper is devoted to a rigorous mathematical foundation for the convergence properties of the strain-smoothed element (SSE) method. The SSE method has demonstrated improved convergence behaviors compared to other strain smoothing methods through various numerical examples; however, there has been no theoretical evidence for the convergence behavior. A unique feature of the SSE method is the construction of smoothed strain fields within elements by fully unifying the strains of adjacent elements. Owing to this feature, convergence analysis is required, which is different from other existing strain smoothing methods. In this paper, we first propose a novel mixed variational principle wherein the SSE method can be interpreted as a Galerkin approximation of that. The proposed variational principle is a generalization of the well-known Hu--Washizu variational principle; thus, various existing strain smoothing methods can be expressed in terms of the proposed variational principle. With a unified view of the SSE method and other existing methods through the proposed variational principle, we analyze the convergence behavior of the SSE method and explain the reason for the improved performance compared to other methods. We also present numerical experiments that support our theoretical results.

East Asian VLBI Network Observations of Active Galactic Nuclei Jets: Imaging with KaVA+Tianma+Nanshan

The East Asian very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) Network (EAVN) is a rapidly evolving international VLBI array that is currently promoted under joint efforts among China, Japan, and Korea. EAVN aims at forming a joint VLBI Network by combining a large number of radio telescopes distributed over East Asian regions. After the combination of the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) and the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) into KaVA, further expansion with the joint array in East Asia is actively promoted. Here we report the first imaging results (at 22 and 43 GHz) of bright radio sources obtained with KaVA connected to Tianma 65-m and Nanshan 26-m Radio Telescopes in China. To test the EAVN imaging performance for different sources, we observed four active galactic nuclei (AGN) having different brightness and morphology. As a result, we confirmed that Tianma 65-m Radio Telescope (TMRT) significantly enhances the overall array sensitivity, a factor of 4 improvement in baseline sensitivity and 2 in image dynamic range compared to the case of KaVA only. The addition of Nanshan 26-m Radio Telescope (NSRT) further doubled the east-west angular resolution. With the resulting high-dynamic-range, high-resolution images with EAVN (KaVA+TMRT+NSRT), various fine-scale structures in our targets, such as the counter-jet in M87, a kink-like morphology of the 3C273 jet and the weak emission in other sources, are successfully detected. This demonstrates the powerful capability of EAVN to study AGN jets and to achieve other science goals in general. Ongoing expansion of EAVN will further enhance the angular resolution, detection sensitivity and frequency coverage of the network.

A detailed kinematic study of 3C 84 and its connection to Gamma-rays

3C 84 (NGC 1275) is the bright radio core of the Perseus Cluster. Even in the absence of strong relativistic effects, the source has been detected at Gamma-rays up to TeV energies. Despite its intensive study, the physical processes responsible for the high-energy emission in the source remain unanswered. We present a detailed kinematics study of the source and its connection to Gamma-ray emission. The sub-parsec scale radio structure is dominated by slow-moving features in both the eastern and western lanes of the jet. The jet appears to have accelerated to its maximum speed within less than 125 000 gravitational radii. The fastest reliably detected speed in the jet was ~0.9 c. This leads to a minimum Lorentz factor of ~1.35. Our analysis suggests the presence of multiple high-energy sites in the source. If Gamma-rays are associated with kinematic changes in the jet, they are being produced in both eastern and western lanes in the jet. Three Gamma-ray flares are contemporaneous with epochs where the slowly moving emission region splits into two sub-regions. We estimate the significance of these events being associated as ~2-3 sigma. We tested our results against theoretical predictions for magnetic reconnection-induced mini-jets and turbulence and find them compatible.

Parareal Neural Networks Emulating a Parallel-in-time Algorithm

As deep neural networks (DNNs) become deeper, the training time increases. In this perspective, multi-GPU parallel computing has become a key tool in accelerating the training of DNNs. In this paper, we introduce a novel methodology to construct a parallel neural network that can utilize multiple GPUs simultaneously from a given DNN. We observe that layers of DNN can be interpreted as the time step of a time-dependent problem and can be parallelized by emulating a parallel-in-time algorithm called parareal. The parareal algorithm consists of fine structures which can be implemented in parallel and a coarse structure which gives suitable approximations to the fine structures. By emulating it, the layers of DNN are torn to form a parallel structure which is connected using a suitable coarse network. We report accelerated and accuracy-preserved results of the proposed methodology applied to VGG-16 and ResNet-1001 on several datasets.

Jet collimation and acceleration in the giant radio galaxy NGC 315

We study the collimation and acceleration of the jets in the nearby giant radio galaxy NGC 315, using multifrequency Very Long Baseline Array observations and archival High Sensitivity Array and Very Large Array data. We find that the jet geometry transitions from a semi-parabolic shape into a conical/hyperbolic shape at a distance of $\approx10^5$ gravitational radii. We constrain the frequency-dependent position of the core, from which we locate the jet base. The jet collimation profile in the parabolic region is in good agreement with the steady axisymmetric force-free electrodynamic solution for the outermost poloidal magnetic field line anchored to the black hole event horizon on the equatorial plane, similar to the nearby radio galaxies M87 and NGC 6251. The velocity field derived from the asymmetry in brightness between the jet and counterjet shows gradual acceleration up to the bulk Lorentz factor of $Γ\sim 3$ in the region where the jet collimation occurs, confirming the presence of the jet acceleration and collimation zone. These results suggest that the jets are collimated by the pressure of the surrounding medium and accelerated by converting Poynting flux to kinetic energy flux. We discover limb-brightening of the jet in a limited distance range where the angular resolution of our data is sufficient to resolve the jet transverse structure. This indicates that either the jet has a stratified velocity field of fast-inner and slow-outer layers or the particle acceleration process is more efficient in the outer layer due to the interaction with the surroundings on pc-scales.

Pseudo-linear Convergence of an Additive Schwarz Method for Dual Total Variation Minimization

In this paper, we propose an overlapping additive Schwarz method for total variation minimization based on a dual formulation. The $O(1/n)$-energy convergence of the proposed method is proven, where $n$ is the number of iterations. In addition, we introduce an interesting convergence property called pseudo-linear convergence of the proposed method; the energy of the proposed method decreases as fast as linearly convergent algorithms until it reaches a particular value. It is shown that such the particular value depends on the overlapping width $δ$, and the proposed method becomes as efficient as linearly convergent algorithms if $δ$ is large. As the latest domain decomposition methods for total variation minimization are sublinearly convergent, the proposed method outperforms them in the sense of the energy decay. Numerical experiments which support our theoretical results are provided.

GPCAL: a generalized calibration pipeline for instrumental polarization in VLBI data

We present the Generalized Polarization CALibration pipeline (GPCAL), an automated pipeline for instrumental polarization calibration of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) data. The pipeline is designed to achieve a high calibration accuracy by means of fitting the instrumental polarization model, including the second-order terms, to multiple calibrators data simultaneously. It also allows using more accurate linear polarization models of calibrators for D-term estimation compared to the conventional way that assumes similar linear polarization and total intensity structures. This assumption has widely been used in the existing packages for instrumental polarization calibration but could be a source of significant uncertainties when there is no suitable calibrator satisfying the assumption. We demonstrate the capabilities of GPCAL by using simulated data, archival Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) data of many active galactic nuclei (AGN) jets at 15 and 43 GHz, and our Korean VLBI Network (KVN) observations of many AGN jets at 86, 95, 130, and 142 GHz. The pipeline could reproduce the complex linear polarization structures of several sources shown in the previous studies using the same VLBA data. GPCAL also reveals a complex linear polarization structure in the flat-spectrum radio quasar 3C 273 from the KVN data at all four frequencies. These results demonstrate that GPCAL can achieve a high calibration accuracy for various VLBI arrays.

We construct a counterexample for the strengthened Cauchy--Schwarz inequality used in the original paper. In addition, we provide a new proof for Lemma 5 of the original paper, an estimate for the extremal eigenvalues of the standard unpreconditioned FETI-DP dual operator.

Interferometric Monitoring of Gamma-ray Bright AGNs: OJ 287

We present the results of simultaneous multi-frequency imaging observations at 22, 43, 86, and 129\,GHz of OJ\,287. We used the Korean VLBI Network as part of the Interferometric MOnitoring of GAmma-ray Bright active galactic nuclei (iMOGABA). The iMOGABA observations were performed during 31 epochs from 2013 January 16 to 2016 December 28. We also used 15\,GHz OVRO and 225\,GHz SMA flux density data. We analyzed four flux enhancements in the light curves. The estimated time scales of three flux enhancements were similar with time scales of $\sim$50 days at two frequencies. A fourth flux enhancement had a variability timescale approximately twice as long. We found that 225\,GHz enhancements led the 15\,GHz enhancements by a range of 7 to 30 days in the time delay analysis. We found the fractional variability did not change with frequency between 43 and 86\,GHz. We could reliably measure the turnover frequency, $ν_{\rm c}$, of the core of the source in three epochs. This was measured to be in a range from 27 to 50\,GHz and a flux density at the turnover frequency, $S_{\rm m}$, ranging from 3-6\,Jy. The derived SSA magnetic fields, $B_{\rm SSA}$, are in a range from $0.157\pm0.104$ to $0.255\pm0.146$ mG. We estimated the equipartition magnetic field strengths to be in a range from $0.95\pm0.15$ to $1.93\pm0.30$ mG. The equipartition magnetic field strengths are up to a factor of 10 higher than the values of $B_{\rm SSA}$. We conclude that the downstream jet may be more particle energy dominated.
