A construction of Horikawa surface via Q-Gorenstein smoothings

In this article we prove that Fintushel-Stern's construction of Horikawa surface, which is obtained from an elliptic surface via a rational blow-down surgery in smooth category, can be performed in complex category. The main technique involved is Q-Gorenstein smoothings.

A complex surface of general type with p_g=0, K^2=3 and H_1=Z/2Z

This paper is an addendum to [4], in which the authors constructed a simply connected minimal complex surface of general type with p_g=0 and K^2=3. In this paper we construct a new non-simply connected minimal surface of general type with p_g=0, K^2=3 and H_1=Z/2Z using a rational blow-down surgery and Q-Gorenstein smoothing theory.

A simply connected surface of general type with p_g=0 and K^2=3

Motivated by a recent result of Y. Lee and the second author[7], we construct a simply connected minimal complex surface of general type with p_g=0 and K^2=3 using a rational blow-down surgery and Q-Gorenstein smoothing theory. In a similar fashion, we also construct a new simply connected symplectic 4-manifold with b_2^+=1 and K^2=4.

Exotic smooth structures on 3{CP}^2#8{-CP}^2

Motivated by Stipsicz and Szabó's exotic 4-manifolds with b_2^+=3 and b_2^-=8, we construct a family of simply connected smooth 4-manifolds with b_2^+=3 and b_2^-=8. As a corollary, we conclude that the topological 4-manifold 3{CP}^2#8{-CP}^2 admits infinitely many distinct smooth structures.

Simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds with $b_2^+ =1$ and $c_1^2 =2$

In this article we construct a new family of simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds with $b_2^+ =1$ and $c_1^2 =2$ which are not diffeomorphic to rational surfaces by using rational blow-down technique. As a corollary, we conclude that a rational surface ${\mathbf CP}^2 \sharp 7{\bar{\mathbf CP}^2}$ admits an exotic smooth structure.

The Geography of Spin Symplectic 4-Manifolds

In this paper we construct a family of simply connected, spin, non-complex, symplectic 4-manifolds which cover all but finitely many allowed lattice points $(χ, c)$ lying in $0 \leq c \leq 8.76χ$. Furthermore, as a corollary, we prove that there exist infinitely many exotic smooth structures on $(2n+1)(S^2 \times S^2)$ for all n large enough.

Non-complex symplectic 4-manifolds with $b_{2}^{+}=1$

In this short article we give a criterion whether a given minimal symplectic 4-manifold with $b_{2}^{+}=1$ having a torsion-free canonical class is rational or ruled. As a corollary, we confirm that most of homotopy elliptic surfaces $E(1}_{K}$, K is a fibered knot in $S^3$, constructed by R. Fintushel and R. Stern are minimal symplectic 4-manifolds with $b_{2}^{+}=1$ which do not admit a complex structure.
