Robust Bayesian Predictive Model Selection using Bregman Divergence

Predictive Bayesian model comparison often relies on leave-one-out (LOO) cross-validation criteria such as the expected log predictive density (ELPD). However, model rankings can be overly sensitive to outliers and tail mismatch because ELPD is based on the log score. We propose a score-matched generalized ELPD framework that replaces the log score by a Bregman scoring rule to update model parameters through a generalized posterior and to evaluate LOO predictive utility. Candidate posterior predictive distributions are ranked by out-of-sample utility under the chosen scoring rule, yielding a direct proper-score generalization of standard ELPD. We focus especially on the $β$-divergence family, where $β$ controls the sensitivity of predictive comparison to low-density observations. Under model misspecification, the procedure asymptotically selects the model whose predictive distribution is closest to the data-generating process under the chosen Bregman divergence. A simulation study and applications to microbial and forensic data show that the generalized ELPD can change the selected model through reduced sensitivity to low-density observations.

Supercharging Bayesian Inference with Reliable AI-Informed Priors

Modern predictive systems encode beliefs that can act as useful prior information for statistical inference in data-limited settings. Using them for prior construction introduces a tradeoff: an informative prior built from a predictive model can sharpen inference from limited data, but also risks propagating error from the model into the posterior. We propose a framework for AI-informed prior elicitation that mitigates this tension by rectifying the AI-induced law that generates synthetic data before using it to inform a prior. The rectified law can be embedded into synthetic data-driven prior elicitation techniques, including as a base measure in a Dirichlet process (DP) prior on the data-generating process. We refer to the resulting prior and corresponding posterior as the rectified AI prior and rectified AI posterior. We establish Gaussian asymptotics for the rectified AI posterior under non-vanishing prior strength and derive a first-order expression for its centering bias. Our rectified AI priors substantially reduce bias compared to standard approaches, improve the coverage of credible intervals, and make AI-powered prior information more reliable. We additionally apply the rectified AI prior to a real skin disease classification task and show that it can meaningfully boost predictive performance.

Robust model selection using likelihood as data

Model selection is a central task in statistics, but standard methods are not robust in misspecified settings where the true data-generating process (DGP) is not in the set of candidate models. The key limitation is that existing methods -- including information criteria and Bayesian posteriors -- do not quantify uncertainty about how well each candidate model approximates the true DGP. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to model selection based on modeling the likelihood values themselves. Specifically, given $K$ candidate models and $n$ observations, we view the $n\times K$ matrix of negative log-likelihood values as a random data matrix and observe that the expectation of each row is equal to the vector of Kullback--Leibler divergences between the $K$ models and the true DGP, up to an additive constant. We use a multivariate normal model to estimate and quantify uncertainty in this expectation, providing calibrated inferences for robust model selection under misspecification. The procedure is easy to compute, interpretable, and comes with theoretical guarantees, including consistency.

StyleCineGAN: Landscape Cinemagraph Generation using a Pre-trained StyleGAN

We propose a method that can generate cinemagraphs automatically from a still landscape image using a pre-trained StyleGAN. Inspired by the success of recent unconditional video generation, we leverage a powerful pre-trained image generator to synthesize high-quality cinemagraphs. Unlike previous approaches that mainly utilize the latent space of a pre-trained StyleGAN, our approach utilizes its deep feature space for both GAN inversion and cinemagraph generation. Specifically, we propose multi-scale deep feature warping (MSDFW), which warps the intermediate features of a pre-trained StyleGAN at different resolutions. By using MSDFW, the generated cinemagraphs are of high resolution and exhibit plausible looping animation. We demonstrate the superiority of our method through user studies and quantitative comparisons with state-of-the-art cinemagraph generation methods and a video generation method that uses a pre-trained StyleGAN.

Longitudinal Canonical Correlation Analysis

This paper considers canonical correlation analysis for two longitudinal variables that are possibly sampled at different time resolutions with irregular grids. We modeled trajectories of the multivariate variables using random effects and found the most correlated sets of linear combinations in the latent space. Our numerical simulations showed that the longitudinal canonical correlation analysis effectively recovers underlying correlation patterns between two high-dimensional longitudinal data sets. We applied the proposed LCCA to data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative and identified the longitudinal profiles of morphological brain changes and amyloid cumulation.
