γ-GeSe:a new hexagonal polymorph from group IV-VI monochalcogenides

The family of group IV-VI monochalcogenides has an atomically puckered layered structure, and their atomic bond configuration suggests the possibility for the realization of various polymorphs. Here, we report the synthesis of the first hexagonal polymorph from the family of group IV-VI monochalcogenides, which is conventionally orthorhombic. Recently predicted four-atomic-thick hexagonal GeSe, so-called γ-GeSe, is synthesized and clearly identified by complementary structural characterizations, including elemental analysis, electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging, and polarized Raman spectroscopy. The electrical and optical measurements indicate that synthesized γ-GeSe exhibits high electrical conductivity of 3x10^5 S/m, which is comparable to those of other two-dimensional layered semimetallic crystals. Moreover, γ-GeSe can be directly grown on h-BN substrates, demonstrating a bottom-up approach for constructing vertical van der Waals heterostructures incorporating γ-GeSe. The newly identified crystal symmetry of γ-GeSe warrants further studies on various physical properties of γ-GeSe.

Universal Effectiveness of High-Depth Circuits in Variational Eigenproblems

We explore the effectiveness of variational quantum circuits in simulating the ground states of quantum many-body Hamiltonians. We show that generic high-depth circuits, performing a sequence of layer unitaries of the same form, can accurately approximate the desired states. We demonstrate their universal success by using two Hamiltonian systems with very different properties: the transverse field Ising model and the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. The energy landscape of the high-depth circuits has a proper structure for the gradient-based optimization, i.e. the presence of local extrema -- near any random initial points -- reaching the ground level energy. We further test the circuit's capability of replicating random quantum states by minimizing the Euclidean distance.

The Infrared Medium-deep Survey. VIII. Quasar Luminosity Function at $z\sim5$

Faint $z\sim5$ quasars with $M_{1450}\sim-23$ mag are known to be the potentially important contributors to the ultraviolet ionizing background in the post-reionization era. However, their number density has not been well determined, making it difficult to assess their role in the early ionization of the intergalactic medium (IGM). In this work, we present the updated results of our $z\sim5$ quasar survey using the Infrared Medium-deep Survey (IMS), a near-infrared imaging survey covering an area of 85 deg$^{2}$. From our spectroscopic observations with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) on the Gemini-South 8 m Telescope, we discovered eight new quasars at $z\sim5$ with $-26.1\leq M_{1450} \leq -23.3$. Combining our IMS faint quasars ($M_{1450}>-27$ mag) with the brighter Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars ($M_{1450}<-27$ mag), we derive the $z\sim5$ quasar luminosity function (QLF) without any fixed parameters down to the magnitude limit of $M_{1450}=-23$ mag. We find that the faint-end slope of the QLF is very flat ($α=-1.2^{+1.4}_{-0.6}$), with a characteristic luminosity of $M^{*}_{1450}=-25.8^{+1.4}_{-1.1}$ mag. The number density of $z\sim5$ quasars from the QLF gives an ionizing emissivity at 912 $\unicode{x212B}$ of $ε_{912}=(3.7$--$7.1)\times10^{23}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$ and an ionizing photon density of $\dot{n}_{\rm ion}=(3.0$--$5.7)\times10^{49}$ Mpc$^{-3}$ s$^{-1}$. These results imply that quasars are responsible for only 10-20% (up to 50% even in the extreme case) of the photons required to completely ionize the IGM at $z\sim5$, disfavoring the idea that quasars alone could have ionized the IGM at $z\sim5$.

A 4d N=1 Cardy Formula

We study the asymptotic behavior of the (modified) superconformal index for 4d $\mathcal{N} = 1$ gauge theory. By considering complexified chemical potential, we find that the `high-temperature limit' of the index can be written in terms of the conformal anomalies $3c-2a$. We also find macroscopic entropy from our asymptotic free energy when the Hofman-Maldacena bound $1/2 < a/c < 3/2$ for the interacting SCFT is satisfied. We study $\mathcal{N} = 1$ theories that are dual to AdS$_5 \times Y^{p, p}$ and find that the Cardy limit of our index accounts for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of large black holes.

Unveiling operator growth in SYK quench dynamics

We study non-equilibrium dynamics induced by a sudden quench of strongly correlated Hamiltonians with all-to-all interactions. By relying on a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) based quench protocol, we show that the time evolution of simple spin-spin correlation functions is highly sensitive to the degree of locality of the corresponding operators, once an appropriate set of fundamental fields is identified. By tracking the time-evolution of specific spin-spin correlation functions and their decay, we argue that it is possible to distinguish between operator hopping and operator growth dynamics; the latter being a hallmark of quantum chaos in many-body quantum systems. Such observation, in turn, could constitute a promising tool to probe the emergence of chaotic behavior, rather accessible in state-of-the-art quench setups.

AdS black holes and finite N indices

We study the index of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ Yang-Mills theory with $U(N)$ gauge group, focussing on the physics of the dual BPS black holes in $AdS_5\times S^5$. Certain aspects of these black holes can be studied from finite $N$ indices with reasonably large $N^2$. We make numerical studies of the index for $N\leq 6$, by expanding it up to reasonably high orders in the fugacity. The entropy of the index agrees very well with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the dual black holes, say at $N^2=25$ or $36$. Our data clarifies and supports the recent ideas which allowed analytic studies of these black holes from the index, such as the complex saddle points of the Legendre transformation and the oscillating signs in the index. In particular, the complex saddle points naturally explain the $\frac{1}{N}$-subleading oscillating patterns of the index. We also illustrate the universality of our ideas by studying a model given by the inverse of the MacMahon function.

Medium-band Photometry Reverberation Mapping of Nearby Active Galactic Nuclei

Reverberation mapping (RM) is one of the most efficient ways to investigate the broad-line region around the central supermassive black holes of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). A common way of performing the RM is to perform a long term spectroscopic monitoring of AGNs, but the spectroscopic monitoring campaign of a large number of AGNs requires an extensive amount of observing time of medium to large size telescopes. As an alternative way, we present the results of photometric RM with medium-band photometry. As the widths of medium-band filters match well with the widths of AGN broad emission lines, the medium-band observation with small telescopes can be a cost-effective way to perform RM. We monitored five nearby AGNs with available spectroscopic RM results showing days to weeks scale variability. Observations were performed for ~3 months with an average of 3 days cadence using three medium-band filters on a 0.43 m telescope. The time lags between the continuum and the H-alpha emission line light curves are calculated using the JAVELIN software and the discrete correlation function. We find time lags of 1.5-15.9 days for these AGNs, which are consistent with the time lags derived from previous spectroscopic RM measurements. This result demonstrates that even a 0.5 m class telescope can perform RM with medium-bands. Furthermore, we show that RM for tens of thousands AGNs is possible with a dedicated 1 m class telescope.

Instantons from Blow-up

We generalize Nakajima-Yoshioka blowup equations to arbitrary gauge group with hypermultiplets in arbitrary representations. Using our blowup equations, we compute the instanton partition functions for 4d N=2 and 5d N=1 gauge theories for arbitrary gauge theory with a large class of matter representations, without knowing explicit construction of the instanton moduli space. Our examples include exceptional gauge theories with fundamentals, SO(N) gauge theories with spinors, and SU(6) gauge theories with rank-3 antisymmetric hypers. Remarkably, the instanton partition function is completely determined by the perturbative part.

Intensive Monitoring Survey of Nearby Galaxies (IMSNG)

Intensive Monitoring Survey of Nearby Galaxies (IMSNG) is a high cadence observation program monitoring nearby galaxies with high probabilities of hosting supernovae (SNe). IMSNG aims to constrain the SN explosion mechanism by inferring sizes of SN progenitor systems through the detection of the shock-heated emission that lasts less than a few days after the SN explosion. To catch the signal, IMSNG utilizes a network of 0.5-m to 1-m class telescopes around the world and monitors the images of 60 nearby galaxies at distances D < 50 Mpc to a cadence as short as a few hours. The target galaxies are bright in near-ultraviolet (NUV) with M_NUV < -18.4 AB mag and have high probabilities of hosting SNe (0.06 SN/yr per galaxy). With this strategy, we expect to detect the early light curves of 3.4 SNe per year to a depth of R ~ 19.5 mag, enabling us to detect the shock-heated emission from a progenitor star with a radius as small as 0.1 R_sun. The accumulated data will be also useful for studying faint features around the target galaxies and other science projects. So far, 18 SNe have occurred in our target fields (16 in IMSNG galaxies) over 5 years, confirming our SN rate estimate of 0.06 SN/yr per galaxy.

The Infrared Medium-deep Survey. VI. Discovery of Faint Quasars at $z\sim5$ with a Medium-band-based Approach

The faint quasars with $M_{1450}>-24$ mag are known to hold the key to the determination of the ultraviolet emissivity for the cosmic re-ionization. But only a few have been identified so far because of the limitations on the survey data. Here, we present the first results of the $z\sim5$ faint quasar survey with the Infrared Medium-deep Survey (IMS), which covers $\sim100$ deg$^{2}$ areas in $J$-band to the depths of $J_{\rm AB}\sim23$ mag. To improve selection methods, the medium-band follow-up imaging has been carried out using the SED camera for QUasars in Early uNiverse (SQUEAN) on the Otto Struve 2.1 m Telescope. The optical spectra of the candidates were obtained with 8-m class telescopes. We newly discovered 10 quasars with $-25<M_{1450}<-23$ at $z\sim5$, among which three have been missed in a previous survey using the same optical data over the same area, implying the necessity for improvements in high redshift faint quasars selection. We derived photometric redshifts from the medium-band data, and find that they have high accuracies of $\langle|Δz|/(1+z)\rangle=0.016$. The medium-band-based approach allows us to rule out many of the interlopers that contaminate $\gtrsim20~\%$ of the broad-band-selected quasar candidates. These results suggest that the medium-band-based approach is a powerful way to identify $z\sim5$ quasars and measure their redshifts at high accuracy (1-2 %). It is also a cost-effective way to understand the contribution of quasars to the cosmic re-ionization history.

Comments on deconfinement in AdS/CFT

We study the index of $\mathcal{N}=4$ Yang-Mills theory on $S^3\times\mathbb{R}$. We argue that the index should undergo a large $N$ deconfinement phase transition, by computing an upper bound of its `temperature.' We compute this bound by optimizing the phases of fugacities. The bound we find has some features analogous to the Hagedorn temperature. We briefly discuss a possible mechanism of the actual deconfinement transition below our bound. Our upper bound is lower than the Hawking-Page transition `temperature' of known BPS black holes in the AdS$_5$ dual. We thus expect the existence of new black holes.

Intra-night optical variability of AGN in the COSMOS field with the KMTNet

Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) variability can be used to study the physics of the region in the vicinity of the central black hole. In this paper, we investigated intra-night optical variability of AGN in the COSMOS field in order to understand the AGN instability at the smallest scale. Observations were performed using the KMTNet on three separate nights for 2.5-5 hour at a cadence of 20-30 min. We find that the observation enables the detection of the short-term variability as small as $\sim$ 0.02 and 0.1 mag for $R \sim$ 18 and 20 mag sources, respectively. Using four selection methods (X-rays, mid-infrared, radio, and matching with SDSS quasars), 394 AGNs are detected in the 4 deg$^2$ field of view. After differential photometry and $χ^2-$test, we classify intra-night variable AGNs. But the fraction of variable AGNs (0-8 %) is consistent with a statistical fluctuation from null result. Eight out of 394 AGNs are found to be intra-night variable in two filters or two nights with a variability level of 0.1 mag, suggesting that they are strong candidates for intra-night variable AGNs. Still they represent a small population (2 %). There is no sub-category of AGNs that shows a statistically significant intra-night variability.

D-type fiber-base duality

M5 branes probing D-type singularities give rise to 6d (1,0) SCFTs with $SO \times SO$ flavor symmetry known as D-type conformal matter theories. Gauging the diagonal $SO$-flavor symmetry leads to a little string theory with an intrinsic scale which can be engineered in F-theory by compactifying on a doubly-elliptic Calabi-Yau manifold. We derive Seiberg-Witten curves for these little string theories which can be interpreted as mirror curves for the corresponding Calabi-Yau manifolds. Under fiber-base duality these models are mapped to D-type quiver gauge theories and we check that their Seiberg-Witten curves match. By taking decompactification limits, we construct the curves for the related 6d SCFTs and connect to known results in the literature by further taking 5d and 4d limits.

Wilson surfaces in M5-branes

We study Wilson surface defects in 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ superconformal field theories, engineered by semi-infinite M2-branes intersecting M5-branes. Two independent approaches are used to obtain the Wilson surface observables on the $T^2$ inside Omega-deformed $\mathbf{R}^4 \times T^2$. One approach is to compute 5d $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ instanton partition functions in the presence of Wilson lines, where the instanton corrections capture the 6d Kaluza-Klein momentum modes. The other approach is to study the elliptic genera of 2d $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ gauge theories, which we propose as describing 6d self-dual strings in the presence of Wilson surface defects. We make a detailed comparison between these two independent computations, which precisely agree for Wilson surfaces in minuscule representations; for non-minuscule representations instead we only find partial agreement, due to technical problems which we comment about.

6d strings and exceptional instantons

We propose new ADHM-like methods to compute the Coulomb branch instanton partition functions of 5d and 6d supersymmetric gauge theories, with certain exceptional gauge groups or exceptional matters. We study $G_2$ theories with $n_{\bf 7}\leq 3$ matters in ${\bf 7}$, and $SO(7)$ theories with $n_{\bf 8}\leq 4$ matters in the spinor representation ${\bf 8}$. We also study the elliptic genera of self-dual instanton strings of 6d SCFTs with exceptional gauge groups or matters, including all non-Higgsable atomic SCFTs with rank $2$ or $3$ tensor branches. Some of them are tested with topological vertex calculus. We also explore a D-brane-based method to study instanton particles of 5d $SO(7)$ and $SO(8)$ gauge theories with matters in spinor representations, which further tests our ADHM-like proposals.

On elliptic genera of 6d string theories

We study the elliptic genera of 6d strings based on their modular properties. They are weak Jacobi forms of weight 0, whose indices are determined from the 2d chiral anomalies. We propose the ansatz for the elliptic genera which reflects the analytic structure of instanton partition functions. Given a finite amount of initial BPS data, we completely determine the elliptic genera of 6d strings in various 6d SCFTs. We also apply our ansatz to study $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ and $(1,1)$ little strings as well as $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ heterotic little strings, for which T-duality of little string theories supplies a sufficient number of initial BPS data. The anomaly polynomials of 6d little strings are worked out, which is needed for the elliptic genera bootstrap. In some little string theories, the elliptic genera must have the extra contributions from the Coulomb branch, which correspond to the additional zero modes for the full strings. The modified ansatze for such elliptic genera are also discussed.

Elliptic Genus of E-strings

We study a family of 2d N=(0,4) gauge theories which describes at low energy the dynamics of E-strings, the M2-branes suspended between a pair of M5 and M9 branes. The gauge theory is engineered using a duality with type IIA theory, leading to the D2-branes suspended between an NS5-brane and 8 D8-branes on an O8-plane. We compute the elliptic genus of this family of theories, and find agreement with the known results for single and two E-strings. The partition function can in principle be computed for arbitrary number of E-strings, and we compute them explicitly for low numbers. We test our predictions against the partially known results from topological strings, as well as from the instanton calculus of 5d Sp(1) gauge theory. Given the relation to topological strings, our computation provides the all genus partition function of the refined topological strings on the canonical bundle over 1/2 K3.

Distance and properties of NGC 4993 as the host galaxy of a gravitational wave source, GW170817

Recently, the optical counterpart of a gravitational wave source GW170817 has been identified in NGC 4993 galaxy. Together with evidence from observations in electromagnetic waves, the event has been suggested as a result of a merger of two neutron stars. We analyze the multi-wavelength data to characterize the host galaxy property and its distance to examine if the properties of NGC 4993 are consistent with this picture. Our analysis shows that NGC 4993 is a bulge-dominated galaxy with reff ~ 2-3 kpc and the Sersic index of n = 3-4 for the bulge component. The spectral energy distribution from 0.15 to 24 micron indicates that this galaxy has no significant ongoing star formation, the mean stellar mass of (0.3 - 1.2) times 10^11 Msun, the mean stellar age greater than ~3 Gyr, and the metallicity of about 20% to 100% of solar abundance. Optical images reveal dust lanes and extended features that suggest a past merging activity. Overall, NGC 4993 has characteristics of normal, but slightly disturbed elliptical galaxies. Furthermore, we derive the distance to NGC 4993 with the fundamental plane relation using 17 parameter sets of 7 different filters and the central stellar velocity dispersion from literature, finding an angular diameter distance of 37.7 +- 8.7 Mpc. NGC 4993 is similar to some host galaxies of short gamma-ray bursts but much different from those of long gamma-ray bursts, supporting the picture of GW170817 as a result of a merger of two NSs.
