MINR: Implicit Neural Representations with Masked Image Modelling

Self-supervised learning methods like masked autoencoders (MAE) have shown significant promise in learning robust feature representations, particularly in image reconstruction-based pretraining task. However, their performance is often strongly dependent on the masking strategies used during training and can degrade when applied to out-of-distribution data. To address these limitations, we introduce the masked implicit neural representations (MINR) framework that synergizes implicit neural representations with masked image modeling. MINR learns a continuous function to represent images, enabling more robust and generalizable reconstructions irrespective of masking strategies. Our experiments demonstrate that MINR not only outperforms MAE in in-domain scenarios but also in out-of-distribution settings, while reducing model complexity. The versatility of MINR extends to various self-supervised learning applications, confirming its utility as a robust and efficient alternative to existing frameworks.

Generalized Gaussian Temporal Difference Error for Uncertainty-aware Reinforcement Learning

Conventional uncertainty-aware temporal difference (TD) learning often models TD errors as zero-mean Gaussian. This assumption can miss the heavy-tailed and heteroscedastic residuals induced by bootstrapping and exploration. We introduce a state-conditioned shape head based on the Generalized Gaussian Distribution (GGD) and use a numerically modified GGD loss as an online surrogate for nonstationary TD residuals. We distinguish two mathematical facts that are sometimes conflated: the exact GGD likelihood is normalized for every $\beta>0$, whereas its exponential density kernel is positive definite for $\beta\in(0,2]$. We use the learned shape to construct a simple monotone weighting heuristic and propose Batch Inverse Error Variance (BIEV) regularization from the variance and sample excess kurtosis of ensemble TD errors. Across continuous and discrete control benchmarks, the shape-aware variants improve over Gaussian-based variants in several settings, although the gains are task- and regime-dependent.

Feature-aligned N-BEATS with Sinkhorn divergence

We propose Feature-aligned N-BEATS as a domain-generalized time series forecasting model. It is a nontrivial extension of N-BEATS with doubly residual stacking principle (Oreshkin et al. [45]) into a representation learning framework. In particular, it revolves around marginal feature probability measures induced by the intricate composition of residual and feature extracting operators of N-BEATS in each stack and aligns them stack-wise via an approximate of an optimal transport distance referred to as the Sinkhorn divergence. The training loss consists of an empirical risk minimization from multiple source domains, i.e., forecasting loss, and an alignment loss calculated with the Sinkhorn divergence, which allows the model to learn invariant features stack-wise across multiple source data sequences while retaining N-BEATS's interpretable design and forecasting power. Comprehensive experimental evaluations with ablation studies are provided and the corresponding results demonstrate the proposed model's forecasting and generalization capabilities.
