Symmetries and Higher-Form Connections in Derived Differential Geometry

We introduce a general definition of higher-form connections on principal $\infty$-bundles in differential geometry. This is achieved by developing the formal differentiation and integration of maps from smooth manifolds to derived stacks with sufficient deformation theory. That allows us to introduce the Atiyah $L_\infty$-algebroid of a principal $\infty$-bundle and establish its global sections as the $L_\infty$-algebra of the derived higher symmetry group of the bundle. We define the space of $p$-form connections on an $\infty$-bundle as the space of order $p$ splittings of its Atiyah $L_\infty$-algebroid. This can be cast equivalently as lifting the classifying map of a bundle on a manifold to the order $p$ truncation of the de Rham stack of the manifold. We demonstrate that our new concept of derived geometric $p$-form connections recovers the known notion of connections on higher U(1)-bundles defined via Čech-Deligne differential cocycles. We further relate the $L_\infty$-algebras of derived higher symmetries of higher U(1)-bundles and higher Courant algebroids. Some applications in higher gauge theory and in supergravity are mentioned.

Modeling $(\infty,1)$-categories with Segal spaces

In this paper, we construct a model structure for $(\infty,1)$-categories on the category of simplicial spaces, whose fibrant objects are the Segal spaces. In particular, we show that it is Quillen equivalent to the models of $(\infty,1)$-categories given by complete Segal spaces and Segal categories. We furthermore prove that this model structure has desirable properties: it is cartesian closed and left proper. As applications, we get a simple description of the inclusion of categories into $(\infty,1)$-categories and of homotopy limits of $(\infty,1)$-categories.

Formal Integration of Derived Foliations

Frobenius' theorem in differential geometry asserts that every involutive subbundle of the tangent bundle of a manifold $M$ integrates to a decomposition of $M$ into smooth leaves. We prove an infinitesimal analogue of this result for locally coherent qcqs schemes $X$ over coherent rings. More precisely, we integrate partition Lie algebroids on $X$ to formal moduli stacks $X \rightarrow S$ where $S$ is the formal leaf space and the fibres of $X \rightarrow S$ are the formal leaves. We deduce that deformations of $X$-families of algebro-geometric objects are controlled by partition Lie algebroids on $X$. Combining our integration equivalence with a result of Fu, we deduce that Toën-Vezzosi's infinitesimal derived foliations (under suitable finiteness hypotheses) are formally integrable.

Theta-Categories and Tannakian duality

We introduce a notion of $Θ$-categories, which is a refinement of the notion of symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories. We use this notion to prove a Tannakian duality statement, relating $Θ$-categories with fpqc-stacks by means of a certain stack of fiber functors in the context of $Θ$-categories. This provides, over a base ring of arbitrary characteristic, a strong link between Tannakian $Θ$-categories and the schematic homotopy types.

PD Operads and Explicit Partition Lie Algebras

Infinitesimal deformations are governed by partition Lie algebras. In characteristic $0$, these higher categorical structures are modelled by differential graded Lie algebras, but in characteristic $p$, they are more subtle. We give explicit models for partition Lie algebras over general coherent rings, both in the setting of spectral and derived algebraic geometry. For the spectral case, we refine operadic Koszul duality to a functor from operads to divided power operads, by taking refined linear duals of $Σ_n$-representations. The derived case requires a further refinement of Koszul duality to a more genuine setting.

Homotopical algebra for Lie algebroids

We construct Quillen equivalent semi-model structures on the categories of dg-Lie algebroids and $L_\infty$-algebroids over a commutative dg-algebra in characteristic zero. This allows one to apply the usual methods of homotopical algebra to dg-Lie algebroids: for example, every Lie algebroid can be resolved by dg-Lie algebroids that arise from dg-Lie algebras, i.e. that have a null-homotopic anchor map. As an application, we show how Lie algebroid cohomology is represented by an object in the homotopy category of dg-Lie algebroids.

Lax monoidal adjunctions, two-variable fibrations and the calculus of mates

We provide a calculus of mates for functors to the $\infty$-category of $\infty$-categories and extend Lurie's unstraightening equivalences to show that (op)lax natural transformations correspond to maps of (co)cartesian fibrations that do not necessarily preserve (co)cartesian edges. As a sample application we obtain an equivalence between lax symmetric monoidal structures on right adjoint functors and oplax symmetric monoidal structures on the left adjoint functors between symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories that is compatible with both horizontal and vertical composition of such structures. As the technical heart of the paper we study various new types of fibrations over a product of two $\infty$-categories. In particular, we show how they can be dualised over one of the two factors and how they encode functors out of the Gray tensor product of $(\infty, 2)$-categories.

Tangent categories of algebras over operads

Associated to a presentable $\infty$-category $\mathcal{C}$ and an object $X \in \mathcal{C}$ is the tangent $\infty$-category $\mathcal{T}_X\mathcal{C}$, consisting of parameterized spectrum objects over $X$. This gives rise to a cohomology theory, called Quillen cohomology, whose category of coefficients is $\mathcal{T}_X\mathcal{C}$. When $\mathcal{C}$ consists of algebras over a nice $\infty$-operad in a stable $\infty$-category, $\mathcal{T}_X\mathcal{C}$ is equivalent to the $\infty$-category of operadic modules, by work of Basterra--Mandell, Schwede and Lurie. In this paper we develop the model-categorical counterpart of this identification and extend it to the case of algebras over an enriched operad, taking values in a model category which is not necessarily stable. This extended comparison can be used, for example, to identify the cotangent complex of enriched categories, an application we take up in a subsequent paper.

The abstract cotangent complex and Quillen cohomology of enriched categories

In his fundamental work, Quillen developed the theory of the cotangent complex as a universal abelian derived invariant, and used it to define and study a canonical form of cohomology, encompassing many known cohomology theories. Additional cohomology theories, such as generalized cohomology of spaces and topological André-Quillen cohomology, can be accommodated by considering a spectral version of the cotangent complex. Recent work of Lurie established a comprehensive $\infty$-categorical analogue of the cotangent complex formalism using stabilization of $\infty$-categories. In this paper we study the spectral cotangent complex while working in Quillen's model categorical setting. Our main result gives new and explicit computations of the cotangent complex and Quillen cohomology of enriched categories. For this we make essential use of previous work, which identifies the tangent categories of operadic algebras in unstable model categories. In particular, we present the cotangent complex of an $\infty$-category as a spectrum valued functor on its twisted arrow category, and consider the associated obstruction theory in some examples of interest.

Two-variable fibrations, factorisation systems and $\infty$-categories of spans

We prove a universal property for $\infty$-categories of spans in the generality of Barwick's adequate triples, explicitly describe the cocartesian fibration corresponding to the span functor, and show that the latter restricts to a self-equivalence on the class of orthogonal adequate triples, which we introduce for this purpose. As applications of the machinery we develop we give a quick proof of Barwick's unfurling theorem, show that an orthogonal factorisation system arises from a cartesian fibration if and only if it forms an adequate triple (generalising work of Lanari), extend the description of dual (co)cartesian fibrations by Barwick, Glasman and Nardin to two-variable fibrations, explicitly describe parametrised adjoints (extending work of Torii), identify the orthofibration classifying the mapping category functor of an $(\infty,2)$-category (building on work of Abellán Garcia and Stern), formally identify the unstraightenings of the identity functor on the $\infty$-category of $\infty$-categories with the (op)lax under-categories of a point, and deduce a certain naturality property of the Yoneda embedding (answering a question of Clausen).

On straightening for Segal spaces

The straightening-unstraightening correspondence of Grothendieck--Lurie provides an equivalence between cocartesian fibrations between $(\infty, 1)$-categories and diagrams of $(\infty, 1)$-categories. We provide an alternative proof of this correspondence, as well as an extension of straightening-unstraightening to all higher categorical dimensions. This is based on an explicit combinatorial result relating two types of fibrations between double categories, which can be applied inductively to construct the straightening of a cocartesian fibration between higher categories.

Moduli problems for operadic algebras

A theorem of Pridham and Lurie provides an equivalence between formal moduli problems and Lie algebras in characteristic zero. We prove a generalization of this correspondence, relating formal moduli problems parametrized by algebras over a Koszul operad to algebras over its Koszul dual operad. In particular, when the Lie algebra associated to a deformation problem is induced from a pre-Lie structure it corresponds to a permutative formal moduli problem. As another example we obtain a correspondence between operadic formal moduli problems and augmented operads.

Lie algebroids are curved Lie algebras

We show that there is an equivalence of $\infty$-categories between Lie algebroids and certain kinds of curved Lie algebras. For this we develop a method to study the $\infty$-category of curved Lie algebras using the homotopy theory of algebras over a complete operad.

On k-invariants for $(\infty, n)$-categories

Every $(\infty, n)$-category can be approximated by its tower of homotopy $(m, n)$-categories. In this paper, we prove that the successive stages of this tower are classified by k-invariants, analogously to the classical Postnikov tower for spaces. Our proof relies on an abstract analysis of Postnikov-type towers equipped with k-invariants, and also yields a construction of k-invariants for algebras over $\infty$-operads and enriched $\infty$-categories.

An extension of Quillen's Theorem B

We prove a general version of Quillen's Theorem B, for actions of simplicial categories, in an arbitrary left Bousfield localization of the homotopy theory of simplicial presheaves over a site. As special cases, we recover a version of the group completion theorem in this general context, as well a version of Puppe's theorem on the stability of homotopy colimits in an infinity-topos, due to Rezk.

The tangent bundle of a model category

This paper studies the homotopy theory of parameterized spectrum objects in a model category from a global point of view. More precisely, for a model category $\mathcal{M}$ satisfying suitable conditions, we construct a relative model category $\mathcal{TM} \to \mathcal{M}$, called the tangent bundle, whose fibers are models for spectra in the various over-categories of $\mathcal{M}$, and which presents the $\infty$-categorical tangent bundle. Moreover, the tangent bundle $\mathcal{TM}$ inherits an enriched model structure when such a structure exists on $\mathcal{M}$. This additional structure is used in subsequent work to identify the tangent bundles of algebras over an operad and of enriched categories.

Quillen cohomology of $(\infty,2)$-categories

In this paper we study the homotopy theory of parameterized spectrum objects in the $\infty$-category of $(\infty, 2)$-categories, as well as the Quillen cohomology of an $(\infty, 2)$-category with coefficients in such a parameterized spectrum. More precisely, we construct an analogue of the twisted arrow category for an $(\infty,2)$-category $\mathbb{C}$, which we call its twisted 2-cell $\infty$-category. We then establish an equivalence between parameterized spectrum objects over $\mathbb{C}$, and diagrams of spectra indexed by the twisted 2-cell $\infty$-category of $\mathbb{C}$. Under this equivalence, the Quillen cohomology of $\mathbb{C}$ with values in such a diagram of spectra is identified with the two-fold suspension of its inverse limit spectrum. As an application, we provide an alternative, obstruction-theoretic proof of the fact that adjunctions between $(\infty,1)$-categories are uniquely determined at the level of the homotopy $(3, 2)$-category of $\mathrm{Cat}_{\infty}$.

Koszul duality for Lie algebroids

This paper studies the role of dg-Lie algebroids in derived deformation theory. More precisely, we provide an equivalence between the homotopy theories of formal moduli problems and dg-Lie algebroids over a commutative dg-algebra of characteristic zero. At the level of linear objects, we show that the category of representations of a dg-Lie algebroid is an extension of the category of quasi-coherent sheaves on the corresponding formal moduli problem. We describe this extension geometrically in terms of pro-coherent sheaves.
