Metacognition in LLMs: Foundations, Progress, and Opportunities

Metacognition is a foundational component of intelligence critical to effective learning, problem solving, decision-making, communication, and more. In recent years, it has become increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of capable, transparent AI systems. Yet while LLMs have made significant progress across diverse real-world tasks, it is not yet clear when, how, or to what extent they can exhibit or be endowed with effective metacognitive abilities, nor how such abilities can be adapted to advance the fundamental capabilities, reliability, and intelligence of AI systems. This paper bridges this gap by presenting the first comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge on metacognition for LLMs. We analyze and taxonomize the landscape of this emerging field and summarize recent technical advancements, including methods and benchmarks to measure and evaluate LLMs' metacognitive abilities, techniques to elicit, improve, and apply metacognition in LLMs, and findings and implications of ongoing research. We also discuss applications, open questions and challenges, and promising directions for future work. Our aim is to provide a detailed and up-to-date review of this topic and stimulate meaningful research and discussion. An organized list of papers can be found at https://github.com/yale-nlp/LLM-Metacognition.

Illinois Express Quantum Network (IEQNET): Metropolitan-scale experimental quantum networking over deployed optical fiber

The Illinois Express Quantum Network (IEQNET) is a program to realize metro-scale quantum networking over deployed optical fiber using currently available technology. IEQNET consists of multiple sites that are geographically dispersed in the Chicago metropolitan area. Each site has one or more quantum nodes (Q-nodes) representing the communication parties in a quantum network. Q-nodes generate or measure quantum signals such as entangled photons and communicate the results via standard, classical, means. The entangled photons in IEQNET nodes are generated at multiple wavelengths, and are selectively distributed to the desired users via optical switches. Here we describe the network architecture of IEQNET, including the Internet-inspired layered hierarchy that leverages software-defined-networking (SDN) technology to perform traditional wavelength routing and assignment between the Q-nodes. Specifically, SDN decouples the control and data planes, with the control plane being entirely classical. Issues associated with synchronization, calibration, network monitoring, and scheduling will be discussed. An important goal of IEQNET is demonstrating the extent to which the control plane can coexist with the data plane using the same fiber lines. This goal is furthered by the use of tunable narrow-band optical filtering at the receivers and, at least in some cases, a wide wavelength separation between the quantum and classical channels. We envision IEQNET to aid in developing robust and practical quantum networks by demonstrating metro-scale quantum communication tasks such as entanglement distribution and quantum-state teleportation.

Explicit computation of symmetric differentials and its application to quasi-hyperbolicity

We develop explicit techniques to investigate algebraic quasi-hyperbolicity of singular surfaces through the constraints imposed by symmetric differentials. We apply these methods to prove that rational curves on Barth's sextic surface, apart from some well-known ones, must pass through at least four singularities, and that genus 1 curves must pass through at least two. On the surface classifying perfect cuboids, our methods show that rational curves, again apart from some well-known ones, must pass through at least seven singularities, and that genus 1 curves must pass through at least two. We also improve lower bounds on the dimension of the space of symmetric differentials on surfaces with $A_1$-singularities, and use our work to show that Barth's decic, Sarti's surface, and the surface parametrizing $3\times 3$ magic squares of squares are all algebraically quasi-hyperbolic.

Universal measuring coalgebras and R - transformation algebras

Universal measuring coalgebras provide an enrichment of the category of algebras over the category of coalgebras. By considering the special case of the tensor algebra on a vector space V, the category of linear spaces itself becomes enriched over coalgebras, and the universal measuring coalgebra is the dual coalgebra of the tensor algebra T(V tensor V*). Given a braiding R on V the universal measuring coalgebra P_R(V) which preserves the grading is naturally dual to the Fadeev-Takhtadjhan-Reshitikin bialgebra A(R) and therefore provides a representation of the quantized universal enveloping algebra as an algebra of transformations. The action of P_R(V) descends to actions on quotients of the tensor algebra, whenever the kernel of the quotient map is preserved by the action of a generating subcoalgebra of P_R(V). This allows representations of quantized enveloping algebras as transformation groups of suitably quantized spaces.
