In this paper we use free iterated actions and the iterated discrete degree of symmetry to obtain rigidity results on aspherical manifolds. We also introduce the concept of the length of an iterated action and we study it for nilmanifolds, solvmanifolds and locally symmetric spaces.
Let M be a closed connected oriented manifold admitting a non-zero degree map to a nilmanifold. In the first part of the paper we study effective finite group actions on M. In particular, we prove that Homeo(M) is Jordan, we bound the discrete degree of symmetry of M and we study the number and the size of stabilizers of an effective action of a finite group G on M. We also study the toral rank conjecture and Carlsson's conjecture for large primes for this class of manifolds. In the second part of the paper we introduce the concepts of free iterated action of groups and the iterated discrete degree of symmetry which we use to obtain cohomological rigidity results for manifolds admitting a non-zero degree map to a 2-step nilmanifold.
In this paper we study actions of finite groups on closed connected aspherical manifolds. Under some assumptions on the outer automorphism group of the fundamental group of a closed connected aspherical manifold $M$, we prove that the homeomorphism group of $M$ is Jordan, we bound the discrete degree of symmetry of $M$ and obtain a rigidity result, and we study the number of stabilizers of finite group actions on $M$. Thereafter, we show that closed connected aspherical locally homogeneous spaces $H\setminus G/Γ$ satisfy the necessary hypothesis on the outer automorphism group of the fundamental group.
We examine which of the compact connected Lie groups that act transitively on spheres of different dimensions leave the unique spin structure of the sphere invariant. We study the notion of invariance of a spin structure and prove this classification in two different ways; through examining the differential of the actions and through representation theory.
