From variational principles to geometry

A method to construct a geometric structure with the same solutions as a given variational principle is presented. The method applies to large families of variational principles. In particular, the known results that assign cosymplectic geometry to Hamilton's principle and cocontact geometry to Herglotz's principle for regular Lagrangians are recovered. The unified Lagrangian-Hamiltonian formalism is also recovered via the absorption of the holonomy conditions. The method is applied to singular time-dependent Lagrangians, proving that they can always be described with a (pre)cosymplectic structure, although it is not always given by the Lagrangian $2$-form. When applied to singular action-dependent Lagrangians, the method does not always lead to (pre)cocontact geometry. In these cases, the resulting geometry associated with the Herglotz's variational principle is new.

Symplectic approach to global stability

We present a new approach to the problem of proving global stability, based on symplectic geometry and with a focus on systems with several conserved quantities. We also provide a proof of instability for integrable systems whose momentum map is everywhere regular. Our results take root in the recently proposed notion of a confining function and are motivated by ghost-ridden systems, for whom we put forward the first geometric definition.

Practical Introduction to Action-Dependent Field Theories

Action-dependent field theories are systems where the Lagrangian or Hamiltonian depends on new variables that encode the action. They model a larger class of field theories, including non-conservative behavior, while maintaining a well-defined notion of symmetries and a Noether theorem. This makes them especially suited for open systems. After a conceptual introduction, we make a quick presentation of a new mathematical framework for action-dependent field theory: multicontact geometry. The formalism is illustrated with a variety of action-dependent Lagrangians, some of which are regular and others singular, derived from well-known theories whose Lagrangians have been modified to incorporate action-dependent terms. Detailed computations are provided, including the constraint algorithm for the singular cases, in both the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms. These are the one-dimensional wave equation, the Klein-Gordon equation and the telegrapher equation, Maxwell's electromagnetism, Metric-affine gravity, the heat equation and Burguers' equation, the Bosonic string theory, and (2+1)-dimensional gravity and Chern-Simons equation.

Foundations of ghost stability

We present a new method to analytically prove global stability in ghost-ridden dynamical systems. Our proposal encompasses all prior results and consequentially extends them. In particular, we show that stability can follow from a conserved quantity that is unbounded from below, contrary to expectation. Novel examples illustrate all our results. Our findings take root on a careful examination of the literature, here comprehensively reviewed for the first time. This work lays the mathematical basis for ulterior extensions to field theory and quantization, and it constitutes a gateway for inter-disciplinary research in dynamics and integrability.
