Cosmological constraints with self-interacting sterile neutrinos

In this work we revisit the question of whether Cosmology can be made compatible with scenarios with light sterile neutrinos, as invoked to explain the SBL anomalies, in the presence of self-interaction among sterile neutrinos mediated by massive gauge bosons. We examine this proposal by deriving the cosmological predictions of the model in a wide range of the model parameters including the effective interaction strength $G_X$, sterile neutrino mass $m_{\rm st}$ and active-sterile mixings. With those we perform a statistical analysis of the cosmological data from BBN, CMB, and BAO data to infer the posterior probabilities of the sterile self-interaction model parameters. BBN mostly provides information about the effective interaction strength and we find that $\log_{10}(G_X/G_F)\geq 3.6$ can describe the primordial abundances at 95% CL. Our analysis of CMB and BAO data show that when allowing a wide prior for the sterile neutrino mass its posterior is bounded to $m_{\rm st}\leq 0.91~{\rm eV}$ (95% CL) considering CMB data only and $m_{\rm st}\leq 0.37~{\rm eV}$ (95% CL) when adding the BAO information. So the mass bounds are slighly relaxed compared with that of a non-interacting sterile neutrino model but a sterile neutrino mass of 1 eV is still excluded at more than $2σ$ CL. Conversely if fixing the sterile neutrino mass and mixing to the values prefered by short baseline data we find that while that CMB data alone favors the self-interacting scenario, including the BAO information severly degrades the agreement with the model. Altogether we conclude then that adding the self-interaction can alleviate the tension between eV sterile neutrinos and CMB data, but when including also the BAO results the self-interacting sterile neutrino model cannot lead to a satisfactory description of the data.

Fitting flavour symmetries: the case of two-zero neutrino mass textures

We present a numeric method for the analysis of the fermion mass matrices predicted in flavour models. The method does not require any previous algebraic work, it offers a $χ^{2}$ comparison test and an easy estimate of confidence intervals. It can also be used to study the stability of the results when the predictions are disturbed by small perturbations. We have applied the method to the case of two-zero neutrino mass textures using the latest available fits on neutrino oscillations, derived the available parameter space for each texture and compared them. Textures $A_{1}$ and $A_{2}$ seem favoured because they give a small $χ^{2}$, allow for large regions in parameter space and give neutrino masses compatible with Cosmology limits. The other "allowed" textures remain allowed although with a very constrained parameter space, which, in some cases, could be in conflict with Cosmology. We have also revisited the "forbidden" textures and studied the stability of the results when the texture zeroes are not exact. Most of the forbidden textures remain forbidden, but textures $F_{1}$ and $F_{3}$ are particularly sensitive to small perturbations and could become allowed.

Neutrino tomography of the Earth

Cosmic-ray interactions with the nuclei of the Earth's atmosphere produce a flux of neutrinos in all directions with energies extending above the TeV scale. However, the Earth is not a fully transparent medium for neutrinos with energies above a few TeV. At these energies, the charged-current neutrino-nucleon cross section is large enough so that the neutrino mean-free path in a medium with the Earth's density is comparable to the Earth's diameter. Therefore, when neutrinos of these energies cross the Earth, there is a non-negligible probability for them to be absorbed. Since this effect depends on the distance traveled by neutrinos and on their energy, studying the zenith and energy distributions of TeV atmospheric neutrinos passing through the Earth offers an opportunity to infer the Earth's density profile. Here we perform an Earth tomography with neutrinos using actual data, the publicly available one-year through-going muon sample of the atmospheric neutrino data of the IceCube neutrino telescope. We are able to determine the mass of the Earth, its moment of inertia, the mass of the Earth's core and to establish the core is denser than the mantle, using weak interactions only, in a way completely independent from gravitational measurements. Our results confirm that this can be achieved with current neutrino detectors. This method to study the Earth's internal structure, complementary to the traditional one from geophysics based on seismological data, is starting to provide useful information and it could become competitive as soon as more statistics is available thanks to the current and larger future neutrino detectors.

IceCube bounds on sterile neutrinos above 10 eV

We study the capabilities of IceCube to search for sterile neutrinos with masses above 10 eV by analyzing its $ν_μ$ disappearance atmospheric neutrino sample. We find that IceCube is not only sensitive to the mixing of sterile neutrinos to muon neutrinos, but also to the more elusive mixing with tau neutrinos through matter effects. The currently released 1-year data shows a mild (around 2$σ$) preference for non-zero sterile mixing, which overlaps with the favoured region for the sterile neutrino interpretation of the ANITA upward shower. Although the null results from CHORUS and NOMAD on $ν_μ$ to $ν_τ$ oscillations in vacuum disfavour the hint from the IceCube 1-year data, the relevant oscillation channel and underlying physics are different. At the $99\%$ C.L. an upper bound is obtained instead that improves over the present Super-Kamiokande and DeepCore constraints in some parts of the parameter space. We also investigate the physics reach of the roughly 8 years of data that is already on tape as well as a forecast of 20 years data to probe the present hint or improve upon current constraints.

Bosonic dark matter halos: excited states and relaxation in the potential of the ground state

An ultra-light axion field with mass $\sim 10^{-22}\ {\rm eV}$, also known as wave or fuzzy dark matter, has been proposed as a component of the dark matter in the Universe. We study the evolution of the axion dark matter distribution in the central region of a halo, assuming the mass is dominated by this axion field, and that gravity is the only important interaction. We calculate the excited axion states in the spherical gravitational potential generated by the self-gravitating ground-state, also known as soliton. These excited states are similar to the states of the hydrogen atom with quantum numbers $(n,l,m)$, here designating oscillation modes of a classical wave. At fixed $n$, the modes with highest $l$ have the lowest energy because of the extended mass distribution generating the potential. We use an approximate analytical treatment to derive the distribution of mass in these states when a steady-state is reached by dynamical relaxation, and find that a corona with a mass density profile $ρ\propto r^{-5/3}$ should be set up around the central soliton, analogous to the Bahcall-Wolf cusp predicted for the stellar distribution around a central black hole. The central soliton accretes dark matter from the corona as dynamical relaxation proceeds and negative orbital energy flows out. This density profile should remain valid out to the radius where the mass in the corona is comparable to the mass of the central soliton; further than that, the gravitational potential depends on the initial distribution of dark matter and the relaxation time increases rapidly with radius.

Cosmology and CPT violating neutrinos

The combination Charge Conjugation-Parity-Time Reversal(CPT) is a fundamental symmetry in our current understanding of nature. As such, testing CPT violation is a strongly motivated path to explore new physics. In this paper we study CPT violation in the neutrino sector, giving for the first time a bound, for a fundamental particle, in the CPT violating particle-antiparticle gravitational mass difference. We argue that cosmology is nowadays the only data sensitive to CPT violation for the neutrino-antineutrino mass splitting and we use the latest data release from Planck combined with the current Baryonic-Acoustic-Oscillation measurement to perform a full cosmological analysis. To show the potential of the future experiments we also show the results for Euclid, a next generation large scale structure experiment.

New Physics in Astrophysical Neutrino Flavor (NuFact 2016)

Astrophysical neutrinos are powerful tools to study fundamental properties of particle physics. We perform a general new physics study on ultra high energy neutrino flavor content by introducing effective operators. We find that at the current limits on these operators, new physics terms cause maximal effects on the flavor content, however, the flavor content at Earth is confined to a region related to the initial flavor content.

Non-standard interactions with high-energy atmospheric neutrinos at IceCube

Non-standard interactions in the propagation of neutrinos in matter can lead to significant deviations from expectations within the standard neutrino oscillation framework and atmospheric neutrino detectors have been considered to set constraints. However, most previous works have focused on relatively low-energy atmospheric neutrino data. Here, we consider the one-year high-energy through-going muon data in IceCube, which has been already used to search for light sterile neutrinos, to constrain new interactions in the $μτ$-sector. In our analysis we include several systematic uncertainties on both, the atmospheric neutrino flux and on the detector properties, which are accounted for via nuisance parameters. After considering different primary cosmic-ray spectra and hadronic interaction models, we obtain the most stringent bound on the off-diagonal $\varepsilon_{μτ}$ parameter to date, with the 90\% credible interval given by $-6.0 \times 10^{-3} < \varepsilon_{μτ} < 5.4 \times 10^{-3}$. In addition, we also estimate the expected sensitivity after 10~years of collected data in IceCube and study the precision at which non-standard parameters could be determined for the case of $\varepsilon_{μτ}$ near its current bound.

Test of Lorentz Violation with Astrophysical Neutrino Flavor

The high-energy astrophysical neutrinos recently discovered by IceCube opened a new way to test Lorentz and CPT violation through the astrophysical neutrino mixing properties. The flavor ratio of astrophysical neutrinos is a very powerful tool to investigate tiny effects caused by Lorentz and CPT violation. There are 3 main findings; (1) current limits on Lorentz and CPT violation in neutrino sector are not tight and they allow for any flavor ratios, (2) however, the observable flavor ratio on the Earth is tied with the flavor ratio at production, this means we can test both the presence of new physics and the astrophysical neutrino production mechanism simultaneously, and (3) the astrophysical neutrino flavor ratio is one of the most stringent tests of Lorentz and CPT violation.

Three Twin Neutrinos: Evidence from LSND and MiniBooNE

We construct a neutrino model of three twin neutrinos in light of the neutrino appearance excesses at LSND and MiniBooNE. The model, which includes a twin parity, naturally predicts identical lepton Yukawa structures in the Standard Model and the twin sectors. As a result, a universal mixing angle controls all three twin neutrino couplings to the Standard Model charged leptons. This mixing angle is predicted to be the ratio of the electroweak scale over the composite scale of the Higgs boson and has the right order of magnitude to fit the data. The heavy twin neutrinos decay within the experimental lengths into active neutrinos plus a long-lived Majoron and can provide a good fit, at around $4σ$ confidence level, to the LSND and MiniBooNE appearance data while simultaneously satisfying the disappearance constraints. For the Majorana neutrino case, the fact that neutrinos have a larger scattering cross section than anti-neutrinos provides a natural explanation to MiniBooNE's observation of a larger anti-neutrino appearance excess.

New Physics in Astrophysical Neutrino Flavor

Astrophysical neutrinos are powerful tools to investigate the fundamental properties of particle physics through their flavor content. In this paper, we perform the first general new physics study on ultra high energy neutrino flavor content by introducing effective operators. We find that at the current limits on these operators, new physics terms cause maximal effects on the flavor content, however, the flavor content at Earth is confined to a region related to the assumed initial flavor content. Furthermore, we conclude that a precise measure of the flavor content at Earth will provide orders of magnitude improvement on new physics bounds. Finally, we discuss the current best fits of flavor content of the IceCube data and their interplay with new physics scenarios.

Cosmological Constraints on the Gravitational Interactions of Matter and Dark Matter

Although there is overwhelming evidence of dark matter from its gravitational interaction, we still do not know its precise gravitational interaction strength or whether it obeys the equivalence principle. Using the latest available cosmological data and working within the framework of $Λ\mbox{CDM}$, we first update the measurement of the Newton's constant for all matter: $G_N=7.26^{+0.27}_{-0.27}\times 10^{-11}\,\mbox{m}^{3}\mbox{kg}^{-1}\mbox{s}^{-2}$, which differs by $2.2 σ$ from the standard laboratory-based value. In general relativity, dark matter equivalence principle breaking can be mimicked by a long-range dark matter force mediated by an ultra light scalar field. Using the Planck three year data, we find that the dark matter "fifth-force" strength is constrained to be weaker than $10^{-4}$ of the gravitational force. We also introduce a phenomenological, post-Newtonian two-fluid description to explicitly break the equivalence principle by introducing a difference between dark matter inertial and gravitational masses. Depending on the decoupling time of the dark matter and ordinary matter fluids, the ratio of the dark matter gravitational mass to inertial mass is constrained to be unity at the $10^{-6}$ level.

A Simple Quantum Integro-Differential Solver (SQuIDS)

Simple Quantum Integro-Differential Solver (SQuIDS) is a C++ code designed to solve semi-analytically the evolution of a set of density matrices and scalar functions. This is done efficiently by expressing all operators in an SU(N) basis. SQuIDS provides a base class from which users can derive new classes to include new non-trivial terms from the right hand sides of density matrix equations. The code was designed in the context of solving neutrino oscillation problems, but can be applied to any problem that involves solving the quantum evolution of a collection of particles with Hilbert space of dimension up to six.

Geometric Compatibility of IceCube TeV-PeV Neutrino Excess and its Galactic Dark Matter Origin

We perform a geometric analysis for the sky map of the IceCube TeV-PeV neutrino excess and test its compatibility with the sky map of decaying dark matter signals in our galaxy. Using both Kolmogorov-Smirnov and the likelihood-ratio tests, we have found that the observed event sky map prefers to have a combination of the galactic dark matter and a homogeneous background contributions, compared to a purely galactic dark matter origin. For the assumption that the galactic dark matter is responsible for all neutrino excess, the current data can also exclude a wide range of dark matter profiles except flatter profiles such as the isothermal one. We also consider several representative decaying dark matter spectra, which can provide a good fit to the observed spectrum at IceCube with a dark matter lifetime of around 12 orders of magnitude longer than the age of the universe.

Global fit to three neutrino mixing: critical look at present precision

We present an up-to-date global analysis of solar, atmospheric, reactor, and accelerator neutrino data in the framework of three-neutrino oscillations. We provide results on the determination of theta_13 from global data and discuss the dependence on the choice of reactor fluxes. We study in detail the statistical significance of a possible deviation of theta_23 from maximal mixing, the determination of its octant, the ordering of the mass states, and the sensitivity to the CP violating phase, and discuss the role of various complementary data sets in those respects.

Dark Radiation and Decaying Matter

Recent cosmological measurements favour additional relativistic energy density beyond the one provided by the three active neutrinos and photons of the Standard Model (SM). This is often referred to as "dark radiation", suggesting the need of new light states in the theory beyond those of the SM. In this paper, we study and numerically explore the alternative possibility that this increase comes from the decay of some new form of heavy matter into the SM neutrinos. We study the constraints on the decaying matter density and its lifetime, using data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, the South Pole Telescope, measurements of the Hubble constant at present time, the results from high-redshift Type-I supernovae and the information on the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation scale. We, moreover, include in our analysis the information on the presence of additional contributions to the expansion rate of the Universe at the time of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We compare the results obtained in this decaying matter scenario with those obtained with the standard analysis in terms of a constant $N_{\rm eff}$.

Updated global fit to three neutrino mixing: status of the hints of theta13 > 0

We present an up-to-date global analysis of solar, atmospheric, reactor and accelerator neutrino data in the framework of three-neutrino oscillations. We discuss in detail the statistical significance of the observed "hint" of non-zero theta13 in the solar sector at the light of the latest experimental advances, such as the Borexino spectral data, the lower value of Gallium rate recently measured in SAGE, and the low energy threshold analysis of the combined SNO phase I and phase II. We also study the robustness of the results under changes of the inputs such as the choice of solar model fluxes and a possible modification of the Gallium capture cross-section as proposed by SAGE. In the atmospheric sector we focus on the latest results for nu_e appearance from MINOS and on the recent Super-Kamiokande results from the combined phases I, II and III, and we discuss their impact on the determination of theta13. Finally, we combine all the data into a global analysis and determine the presently allowed ranges of masses and mixing.

Direct determination of the solar neutrino fluxes from solar neutrino data

We determine the solar neutrino fluxes from a global analysis of the solar and terrestrial neutrino data in the framework of three-neutrino mixing. Using a Bayesian approach we reconstruct the posterior probability distribution function for the eight normalization parameters of the solar neutrino fluxes plus the relevant masses and mixing, with and without imposing the luminosity constraint. This is done by means of a Markov Chain Monte Carlo employing the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. We also describe how these results can be applied to test the predictions of the Standard Solar Models. Our results show that, at present, both models with low and high metallicity can describe the data with good statistical agreement.
