Disentangling $V_{ud}$ from New Physics in Beta Decays with the FCC-ee

Superallowed nuclear $β$-decays enable the most precise determination of the CKM element $V_{ud}$, but they are only sensitive to an effective combination of $V_{ud}$ and New Physics contributions to left-handed charged currents, which low-energy data alone cannot disentangle. Here we determine $V_{ud}$ simultaneously with the relevant Wilson coefficients of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) by combining, within the SMEFiT framework, a dedicated likelihood for superallowed transitions, including radiative and nuclear-structure uncertainties, with LEP and LHC world data and HL-LHC and FCC-ee projections. Current collider data and HL-LHC projections only partially lift the degeneracy between $V_{ud}$ and possible New Physics effects. Instead, the FCC-ee fully decouples $V_{ud}$ from New Physics, recovering SM-level precision while significantly tightening the constraints on the SMEFT Wilson coefficients. This conclusion is robust against variations in flavour assumptions and theory uncertainties. Our results highlight the complementarity between future colliders and low-energy experiments, and pave the way towards a SMEFT-consistent interpretation of first-row CKM unitarity tests and the Cabibbo angle anomaly.

Radiative corrections to neutron $β$ decay with explicit $Δ(1232)$ degrees of freedom

We study electromagnetic radiative corrections to neutron $β$ decay within chiral perturbation theory extended to include the $Δ(1232)$ resonance as an explicit degree of freedom. Building on a previous analysis performed in the $Δ$-less theory, we identify and compute additional loop contributions with intermediate $Δ$ states at leading and next-to-leading order in the small-scale expansion, and match the results to the pionless effective field theory. We find that the convergence of the chiral expansion significantly improved in the $Δ$-full calculation. The electromagnetic shift in the axial coupling is reduced by $25\%$ compared to the $Δ$-less result. The correction remains at the percent level and is phenomenologically significant for the comparison between experimental extractions and lattice-QCD determinations of the nucleon axial charge. We also obtain a new $Δ$-induced contribution to the weak magnetism term, which is an order of magnitude smaller than the pion-loop result and negligible for upcoming experiments.

Bubble Trouble: a Review on Electroweak Baryogenesis

The origin of the universal asymmetry between matter and antimatter remains a mystery. Electroweak baryogenesis is a well-motivated mechanism for generating the asymmetry dynamically, using interesting features of the Standard Model. In addition, it relies on beyond-the-Standard Model physics active around the electroweak scale: new physics coupling to the Higgs to make the electroweak phase transition first order, and a new mechanism of CP violation. The relatively low energy scale at which electroweak baryogenesis occurs makes certain aspects of the mechanism testable through collider experiments, electric dipole moment measurements, and gravitational wave observations. However, scenarios of electroweak baryogenesis are increasingly challenged by results from contemporary experiments. The developing experimental programs will play a crucial role in either falsifying or detecting the new physics responsible for electroweak baryogenesis. To achieve this, it is essential to make precise predictions for the baryon asymmetry and the corresponding experimental signatures within specific scenarios. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the rich physics involved in these predictions. Our goal is to offer a practical computational guide, with a focus on recent developments in the field.

The theory of electric dipole moments: the view from below

Permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of nucleons, nuclei, atoms, and molecules are among the most sensitive probes of CP violation beyond the Standard Model and are intimately connected to the strong CP problem and the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe. This review presents the theory of EDMs from the bottom up, tracing the chain of connections that links CP-violating interactions at level of elementary particles to observable EDMs across a wide range of systems. Starting from a general CP-odd effective Lagrangian at the quark-gluon level comprising the QCD theta term, quark EDMs and chromo-EDMs, the Weinberg operator, and CP-odd four-fermion interactions, I show how chiral perturbation theory organizes the nonperturbative QCD dynamics into a small set of hadronic low-energy constants, whose relative sizes are determined by the chiral representation of the underlying source. These hadronic interactions feed into calculations of nuclear EDMs and Schiff moments, which in turn enter atomic and molecular structure calculations that connect to experimentally accessible observables in diamagnetic and paramagnetic systems. Special attention is given to the recently identified sensitivity of paramagnetic systems to hadronic CP violation, which opens a new and relatively unexplored window on the quark-gluon sector. The complementarity of the full EDM portfolio including the neutron, light nuclei, atoms, and molecules, and the role of theory in disentangling the underlying source of CP violation is discussed throughout.

Nucleon Electric Dipole Moments in Paramagnetic Molecules through Effective Field Theory

Electric dipole moment (EDM) measurements using paramagnetic molecules have significantly advanced over the last decade. Traditionally, these experiments have been analyzed in terms of the electron EDM. However, paramagnetic molecules are also sensitive to hadronic sources of charge-parity (CP) violation, highlighting the need for a new framework to interpret the experimental results. In this Letter, we introduce an effective field theory framework to relate molecular EDMs to the EDMs of neutrons and protons. We identify the dominant contributions through power counting and pinpoint the necessary nuclear matrix elements. As a practical application, we employ the nuclear shell model to calculate these nuclear matrix elements for the polar molecule BaF. Finally, we estimate the limits on the nucleon EDMs set by current molecular EDM experiments.

Radiative corrections to two-neutrino double-beta decay

We use heavy-nucleus effective field theory to compute radiative corrections to two-neutrino double-$β$ decay ($2νββ$). Our main result is the first derivation of a universal radiative-correction factor for double-weak decays -- the analogue of the Sirlin function in single-$β$ decay -- independent of nuclear matrix elements and excitation energies. This "double-weak Sirlin function" depends on the individual electron energies as well as their relative angle and differs significantly from the approximation obtained by summing two single-$β$ decay Sirlin functions. In addition, we calculate the nuclear-structure-dependent component of the radiative corrections and find that they can still be neglected at current experimental sensitivities. On the other hand, the double-weak Sirlin function induces distortions of the electron energies and angular spectra that are comparable in size to the leading nuclear-structure corrections parametrized by the ratio of nuclear matrix elements, $ξ_{31}$. Our results indicate that extractions of nuclear structure information and tests of the Standard Model from high-precision $2νββ$ measurements must include double-weak radiative corrections, implying that recent extractions of $ξ_{31}$ should be revisited.

Scalarful double beta decay

We revisit scalar emissions in double beta decays of nuclei, often discussed in the context of Majoron models, in light of the latest developments on the study of neutrinoless double beta decay amplitudes from an effective field theory approach. The sensitivity of double beta decay experiments to this process is assessed through an analysis of spectral shapes, and the study is extended to massive scalars, scalars coupling to sterile neutrinos, and exotic right-handed effective couplings.

Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and the Neutrino-Extended Standard Model Effective Field Theory

We study the impact of light GeV-scale heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) on Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) in the neutrino-extended Standard Model Effective Field Theory ($ν$SMEFT). We show that, based on very general considerations, BBN constraints complement laboratory searches at colliders, beam dumps, and neutrinoless double beta decay, by providing an upper bound on the cut-off scale of the effective field theory for HNL masses above $\sim$100 MeV. We identify target regions for future laboratory probes of the $ν$SMEFT parameter space that is bounded from above and below.

Probing the QCD $\bar θ$ term with paramagnetic molecules

The experimental search for CP violation in paramagnetic atomic and molecular systems has made impressive progress in recent years. This has led to strong upper limits on the electron electric dipole moment. The same measurements can also be used to constrain hadronic sources of CP violation through CP-violating interactions between the electrons and the nucleus. We employ heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory to compute such CP-violating semileptonic electron-nucleus interactions arising from the QCD theta term. We sharpen earlier results by determining the relevant short-distance effects and by an explicit two-loop calculation of meson-photon diagrams. We derive a bound of $|\barθ| < 1.5 \cdot 10^{-8}$ at $90\%$ confidence, based on HfF$^+$ experiments at JILA. A further experimental improvement of one to two orders of magnitude would make paramagnetic molecular electric dipole moment experiments competitive with the neutron and diamagnetic atom program in constraining strong CP violation and higher-dimensional CP-odd quark-gluon operators.

2D transverse laser cooling of a hexapole focused beam of cold BaF molecules

A cryogenic buffer gas beam, an electrostatic hexapole lens, and 2D transverse Doppler laser cooling are combined to produce a bright beam of barium monofluoride ($^{138}$Ba$^{19}$F) molecules. Experimental results and trajectory simulations are used to study the laser cooling effect as a function of laser detuning, laser power, laser alignment, and interaction time. A scattering rate of 6.1(1.4) $\times 10^{5}$ s$^{-1}$ on the laser cooling transition is obtained; this is $14 \%$ of the expected maximum, which is attributed to limited control of the magnetic field used to remix dark states. Using 3 tuneable lasers with appropriate sidebands and detuning, each molecule scatters approximately 400 photons during 2D laser cooling, limited by the interaction time and scattering rate. Leaks to dark states are less than 10$\%$. The experimental results are used to benchmark the trajectory simulations to predict the achievable flux 3.5 m downstream for a planned $e$EDM experiment.

Probing light sterile neutrinos in left-right symmetric models with displaced vertices and neutrinoless double beta decay

An investigation of relatively light (GeV-scale), long-lived right-handed neutrinos is performed within minimal left-right symmetric models using the neutrino-extended Standard Model Effective Field Theory framework. Light sterile neutrinos can be produced through rare decays of kaons, $D$-mesons, and $B$-mesons at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) of Fermilab. Their decays could result in displaced vertices, which can be reconstructed. By performing Monte-Carlo simulations, we assess the sensitivities of the future LHC far-detector experiments ANUBIS, CODEX-b, FACET, FASER(2), MoEDAL-MAPP1(2), MATHUSLA, the recently approved beam-dump experiment SHiP, and the upcoming neutrino experiment DUNE at the LBNF, to the right-handed gauge-boson mass $M_{W_R}$ as functions of neutrino masses. We find that DUNE and SHiP could be sensitive to right-handed gauge-boson masses up to $\sim 25$ TeV. We compare this reach to indirect searches such as neutrinoless double beta decay, finding that displaced-vertex searches are very competitive.

$2νββ$ Spectrum in Chiral Effective Field Theory

We investigate two-neutrino double beta decay ($2νββ$) in chiral effective field theory. We find contributions from weak magnetism and double-weak pion-exchange at next-to-leading-order in the chiral power counting. We discuss the impact of the chiral corrections on the electron spectra and find that they should be included in analyses of $2νββ$ decay that aim to uncover new physics signatures in the electron spectrum. We illustrate this point by revisiting the effect of sterile neutrinos and non-standard charged interactions. We also find that the pion-exchange contributions involve nuclear matrix elements that are related to those appearing in neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$). We investigate whether the $0νββ$ nuclear matrix elements can be obtained from detailed measurements of the energy spectrum of the outgoing electrons in $2νββ$ transitions.

Ab-initio electroweak corrections to superallowed $β$ decays and their impact on $V_{ud}$

Radiative corrections are essential for an accurate determination of $V_{ud}$ from superallowed $β$ decays. In view of recent progress in the single-nucleon sector, the uncertainty is dominated by the theoretical description of nucleus-dependent effects, limiting the precision that can currently be achieved for $V_{ud}$. In this work, we provide a detailed account of the electroweak corrections to superallowed $β$ decays in effective field theory (EFT), including the power counting, potential and ultrasoft contributions, and factorization in the decay rate. We present a first numerical evaluation of the dominant corrections in light nuclei based on Quantum Monte Carlo methods, confirming the expectations from the EFT power counting. Finally, we discuss strategies how to extract from data the low-energy constants that parameterize short-distance contributions and whose values are not predicted by the EFT. Combined with advances in ab-initio nuclear-structure calculations, this EFT framework allows one to systematically address the dominant uncertainty in $V_{ud}$, as illustrated in detail for the $^{14}$O $\to$ $^{14}$N transition.

Radiative corrections to superallowed $β$ decays in effective field theory

The accuracy of $V_{ud}$ determinations from superallowed $β$ decays critically hinges on control over radiative corrections. Recently, substantial progress has been made on the single-nucleon, universal corrections, while nucleus-dependent effects, typically parameterized by a quantity $δ_\text{NS}$, are much less well constrained. Here, we lay out a program to evaluate this correction from effective field theory (EFT), highlighting the dominant terms as predicted by the EFT power counting. Moreover, we compare the results to a dispersive representation of $δ_\text{NS}$ and show that the expected momentum scaling applies even in the case of low-lying intermediate states. Our EFT framework paves the way towards ab-initio calculations of $δ_\text{NS}$ and thereby addresses the dominant uncertainty in $V_{ud}$.

Long-lived neutral fermions at the DUNE near detector

At the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), a proton beam hits a fixed target leading to large production rates of mesons. These mesons can decay and potentially provide a source of long-lived neutral fermions. Examples of such long-lived fermions are heavy neutral leptons which can mix with the standard-model active neutrinos, and the bino-like lightest neutralino in R-parity-violating supersymmetry. We show that the Standard Model Effective Field Theory extended with right-handed singlet neutrinos can simultaneously describe heavy neutral leptons and bino-like neutralinos in a unified manner. We use the effective-field-theory framework to determine the sensitivity reach of the DUNE near detector in probing various scenarios of long-lived neutral fermions.

CP-violating axion interactions II: axions as Dark Matter

Axions provide a solution to the strong CP problem and are excellent dark matter candidates. The presence of additional sources of CP violation, for example to account for the matter/antimatter asymmetry of the universe, can lead to CP-violating interactions between axions and Standard Model fields. In case axions form a coherent dark matter background, this leads to time-oscillating fundamental constants such as the fine-structure constant and particle masses. In this work we compare the sensitivity of various searches for CP-odd axion interactions. These include fifth-force experiments, searches for time-oscillating constants induced by axion dark matter, and direct limits from electric dipole moment experiments. We show that searches for oscillating constants can outperform fifth-force experiments in the regime of small axion masses, but, in general, do not reach the sensitivity of electric dipole moment experiments.

Anomalies in global SMEFT analyses: a case study of first-row CKM unitarity

Recent developments in the Standard Model analysis of semileptonic charged-current processes involving light quarks have revealed $\sim 3σ$ tensions in Cabibbo universality tests involving meson, neutron, and nuclear beta decays. In this paper, we explore beyond the Standard Model explanations of this so-called Cabibbo Angle Anomaly in the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), including not only low-energy charged current processes (`L'), but also electroweak precision observables (`EW') and Drell-Yan collider processes (`C') that probe the same underlying physics across a broad range of energy scales. The resulting `CLEW' framework not only allows one to test explanations of the Cabibbo Angle Anomaly, but is set up to provide near model-independent analyses with minimal assumptions on the flavor structure of the SMEFT operators. Besides the global analysis, we consider a large number of simpler scenarios, each with a subset of SMEFT operators, and investigate how much they improve upon the Standard Model fit. We find that the most favored scenarios, as judged by the Akaike Information Criterion, are those that involve right-handed charged currents. Additional interactions, namely oblique operators, terms modifying the Fermi constant, and operators involving right-handed neutral currents, play a role if the CDF determination of the $W$ mass is included in the analysis.

$ν$DoBe -- A Python Tool for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

We present $ν$DoBe, a Python tool for the computation of neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) rates in terms of lepton-number-violating operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). The tool can be used for automated calculations of $0νββ$ rates, electron spectra and angular correlations for all isotopes of experimental interest, for lepton-number-violating operators up to and including dimension 9. The tool takes care of renormalization-group running to lower energies and provides the matching to the low-energy effective field theory and, at lower scales, to a chiral effective field theory description of $0νββ$ rates. The user can specify different sets of nuclear matrix elements from various many-body methods and hadronic low-energy constants. The tool can be used to quickly generate analytical and numerical expressions for $0νββ$ rates and to generate a large variety of plots. In this work, we provide examples of possible use along with a detailed code documentation.
