A Hybrid Strong/Weak Coupling Approach to Jet Quenching

We propose and explore a new hybrid approach to jet quenching in a strongly coupled medium. The basis of this phenomenological approach is to treat physics processes at different energy scales differently. The high-$Q^2$ processes associated with the QCD evolution of the jet from production as a single hard parton through its fragmentation, up to but not including hadronization, are treated perturbatively. The interactions between the partons in the shower and the deconfined matter within which they find themselves lead to energy loss. The momentum scales associated with the medium (of the order of the temperature) and with typical interactions between partons in the shower and the medium are sufficiently soft that strongly coupled physics plays an important role in energy loss. We model these interactions using qualitative insights from holographic calculations of the energy loss of energetic light quarks and gluons in a strongly coupled plasma, obtained via gauge/gravity duality. We embed this hybrid model into a hydrodynamic description of the spacetime evolution of the hot QCD matter produced in heavy ion collisions and confront its predictions with jet data from the LHC. The holographic expression for the energy loss of a light quark or gluon that we incorporate in our hybrid model is parametrized by a stopping distance. We find very good agreement with all the data as long as we choose a stopping distance that is comparable to but somewhat longer than that in ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. For comparison, we also construct alternative models in which energy loss occurs as it would if the plasma were weakly coupled. We close with suggestions of observables that could provide more incisive evidence for, or against, the importance of strongly coupled physics in jet quenching.

Longitudinal Coherence in a Holographic Model of p-Pb Collisions

As a model of the longitudinal structure in heavy ion collisions, we simulate gravitational shock wave collisions in anti-de Sitter space in which each shock is composed of multiple constituents. We find that all constituents act coherently, and their separation leaves no imprint on the resulting plasma, when this separation is $\lesssim 0.26 / T_{hyd}$, with $T_{hyd}$ the temperature of the plasma at the time when hydrodynamics first becomes applicable. In particular, the center-of-mass of the plasma coincides with the center-of-mass of all the constituents participating in the collision, as opposed to the center-of-mass of the individual collisions. We discuss the implications for nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions.

From full stopping to transparency in a holographic model of heavy ion collisions

We numerically simulate planar shock wave collisions in anti-de Sitter space as a model for heavy ion collisions of large nuclei. We uncover a cross-over between two different dynamical regimes as a function of the collision energy. At low energies the shocks first stop and then explode in a manner approximately described by hydrodynamics, in close similarity with the Landau model. At high energies the receding fragments move outwards at the speed of light, with a region of negative energy density and negative longitudinal pressure trailing behind them. The rapidity distribution of the energy density at late times around mid-rapidity is not approximately boost-invariant but Gaussian, albeit with a width that increases with the collision energy.

New picture of jet quenching dictated by color coherence

We propose a new description of the jet quenching phenomenon observed in nuclear collisions at high energies in which coherent parton branching plays a central role. This picture is based on the appearance of a dynamically generated scale, the jet resolution scale, which controls the transverse resolution power of the medium to simultaneously propagating color probes. Since from the point of view of the medium all partonic jet fragments within this transverse distance act coherently as a single emitter, this scale allows us to rearrange the jet shower into effective emitters. We observe that in the kinematic regime of the LHC, the corresponding characteristic angle is comparable to the typical opening angle of high energy jets such that most of the jet energy is contained within a non-resolvable color coherent inner core. Thus, a sizable fraction of the jets are unresolved, losing energy as a single parton without modifications of their intra-jet structure. This new picture provides a consistent understanding of the present data on reconstructed jet observables and constitute the basis for future developments.

High-p_T and Jets. A Summary of Results from Quark Matter 2012

A broad range of new experimental data and theoretical results on the properties of hadronic matter under extreme conditions have been reported at Quark Matter 2012 conference. At this conference the scientific community was presented with a variety of measurements from the 2011 lead-lead LHC run using hard probe observables. Many measurements, such as boson-jet correlations, production rates of the b-jets, high precision jet fragmentation and others were shown for the first time. The new data from the LHC was matched by new techniques and analyses coming from RHIC experiments. This proceeding summarises the new measurements with high-p_T particles and jets and attempts to provide a theoretical explanation for the novel results presented at the conference

Dynamical Quarkonia Suppression in a QGP-Brick

I address the effect that a temperature dependent potential has on the suppression of heavy quarkonia states in deconfined hadronic matter. I focus on a simple medium: a homogenous, fixed temperature and deconfined system with a finite lifetime (QGP-brick). Assuming that all the interactions of a heavy quark anti-quark ($Q-\bar Q$) pair with the medium can be recast into an in-medium potential, I solve the time dependent Schrödinger equation to evolve the density matrix which describes the hard pair production and its connection to the final distribution of hadrons after the medium disappears. For those temperatures in which bound states survive in the medium, I find a non-trivial dependence of the production of excited quarkonia states on the in-medium levels, due to the mixing of vacuum and in-medium wave functions. This mixing leads, in particular, to the enhancement of the relative abundance of 2S to 1S states for those systems in which the in-medium ground state of the $Q-\bar Q$ system is dissolved or close to threshold. I also explore quarkonia production in a non-homogeneous expanding medium and find that the finite formation time effects arising from the low binding energies of in-medium states lead to the insensitivity of the heavy mesons yield to the hottest part of the system evolution.

Gauge/String Duality, Hot QCD and Heavy Ion Collisions

Over the last decade, both experimental and theoretical advances have brought the need for strong coupling techniques in the analysis of deconfined QCD matter and heavy ion collisions to the forefront. As a consequence, a fruitful interplay has developed between analyses of strongly-coupled non-abelian plasmas via the gauge/string duality (also referred to as the AdS/CFT correspondence) and the phenomenology of heavy ion collisions. We review some of the main insights gained from this interplay to date. To establish a common language, we start with an introduction to heavy ion phenomenology and finite-temperature QCD, and a corresponding introduction to important concepts and techniques in the gauge/string duality. These introductory sections are written for nonspecialists, with the goal of bringing readers ranging from beginning graduate students to experienced practitioners of either QCD or gauge/string duality to the point that they understand enough about both fields that they can then appreciate their interplay in all appropriate contexts. We then review the current state-of-the art in the application of the duality to the description of the dynamics of strongly coupled plasmas, with emphases that include: its thermodynamic, hydrodynamic and transport properties; the way it both modifies the dynamics of, and is perturbed by, high-energy or heavy quarks passing through it; and the physics of quarkonium mesons within it. We seek throughout to stress the lessons that can be extracted from these computations for heavy ion physics as well as to discuss future directions and open problems for the field.

Off-diagonal Flavour Susceptibilities from AdS/CFT

We study flavour susceptibilities in the ${\cal N}=4$ SU(N) super Yang-Mills plasma coupled to two quark flavours at strong coupling and large $N$ by means of its gravity dual. The off-diagonal susceptibility is 1/N-suppressed and we compute it as a one-loop effect on the gravity side. Contrary to naive extrapolation from perturbative results, it attains a finite value in the infinite-coupling limit. Moreover, its parametric form is independent of whether or not meson bound states exist in the plasma. We conclude that caution must be exercised when drawing conclusions about the QCD plasma from lattice calculations of quark susceptibilities.

Out of Medium Fragmentation from Long-Lived Jet Showers

We study the time structure of vacuum jet evolution via a simple uncertainty principle estimate in the kinematic range explored by current heavy ion collisions at the LHC. We observe that a large fraction of the partonic splittings occur at large times, of the order of several fm. We compare the time distribution of vacuum splittings with the distribution of path lengths traversed by jets in a heavy ion collision. We find that if no medium induced modification of the jet dynamics were present, a very large fraction (larger than 80% for inclusive jets) of the jet splittings would occur outside of the medium. We confront this observation with current available data on jet properties in heavy ion collisions and discuss its implications for the dynamics of jet-medium interactions.

Interference Phenomena in Medium Induced Radiation

We consider the interference pattern for the medium-induced gluon radiation produced by a color singlet quark-antiquark antenna embedded in a QCD medium with size $L$ and `jet quenching' parameter $\hat q$. Within the BDMPS-Z regime, we demonstrate that, for a dipole opening angle $θ_{q\bar q} \ggθ_c\equiv {2}/{\sqrt{\hat q L^3}}$, the interference between the medium--induced gluon emissions by the quark and the antiquark is suppressed with respect to the direct emissions. This is so since direct emissions are delocalized throughout the medium and thus yield contributions proportional to $L$ while interference occurs only between emissions at early times, when both sources remain coherent. Thus, for $\tqq \ggθ_c$, the medium-induced radiation is the sum of the two spectra individually produced by the quark and the antiquark, without coherence effects like angular ordering. For $\tqq \llθ_c$, the medium--induced radiation vanishes.

Interference effects in medium-induced gluon radiation

As a step towards understanding the in-medium evolution of a hard jet, we consider the interference pattern for the medium induced gluon radiation produced by a color singlet quark-antiquark antenna embedded in a QCD medium with size L. We focus on the typical kinematics for medium-induced gluon radiation in the BDMPS-Z regime, that is, short formation times τ_f << L and relatively large emission angles θ>>θ_c = 2/\sqrt{\hat q L^3}, with \hat q the `jet quenching' parameter. We demonstrate that, for a dipole opening angle θ_{q\bar q} larger than θ_c, the interference between the medium-induced gluon emissions by the quark and the antiquark is parametrically suppressed with respect to the corresponding direct emissions. Physically, this is so since the direct emissions can be delocalized anywhere throughout the medium and thus yield contributions proportional to L. On the contrary, the interference occurs only between gluons emitted at very early times, within the characteristic time scales for quantum and color coherence between the two emitters, which in this regime are much smaller than L. This implies that, for θ_{q\bar q} >> θ_c, the medium-induced radiation by the dipole is simply the sum of the two BDMPS-Z spectra individually produced by the quark and the antiquark, without coherence effects like angular ordering. For θ_{q\bar q} << θ_c, the BDMPS-Z radiation by the dipole vanishes.

Jet Quenching via Jet Collimation

The ATLAS Collaboration recently reported strong modifications of dijet properties in heavy ion collisions. In this work, we discuss to what extent these first data constrain already the microscopic mechanism underlying jet quenching. Simple kinematic arguments lead us to identify a frequency collimation mechanism via which the medium efficiently trims away the soft components of the jet parton shower. Through this mechanism, the observed dijet asymmetry can be accomodated with values of $\hat{q}\, L$ that lie in the expected order of magnitude.

Cherenkov mesons as in-medium quark energy loss

We recently showed that a heavy quark moving sufficiently fast through a quark-gluon plasma may lose energy by Cherenkov-radiating mesons [1]. Here we review our previous holographic calculation of the energy loss in N=4 Super Yang-Mills and extend it to longitudinal vector mesons and scalar mesons. We also discuss phenomenological implications for heavy-ion collision experiments. Although the Cherenkov energy loss is an O(1/Nc) effect, a ballpark estimate yields a value of dE/dx for Nc=3 which is comparable to that of other mechanisms.

Stochastic String Motion Above and Below the World Sheet Horizon

We study the stochastic motion of a relativistic trailing string in black hole AdS_5. The classical string solution develops a world-sheet horizon and we determine the associated Hawking radiation spectrum. The emitted radiation causes fluctuations on the string both above and below the world-sheet horizon. In contrast to standard black hole physics, the fluctuations below the horizon are causally connected with the boundary of AdS. We derive a bulk stochastic equation of motion for the dual string and use the AdS/CFT correspondence to determine the evolution a fast heavy quark in the strongly coupled $\N=4$ plasma. We find that the kinetic mass of the quark decreases by $ΔM=-\sqrt{γλ}T/2$ while the correlation time of world sheet fluctuations increases by $\sqrtγ$.

Eccentricity fluctuations make flow measurable in high multiplicity p-p collisions

Elliptic flow is a hallmark of collectivity in hadronic collisions. Its measurement relies on analysis techniques which require high event multiplicity and could be applied so far to heavy ion collisions only. Here, we delineate the conditions under which elliptic flow becomes measurable in the samples of high-multiplicity ($dN_{\rm ch}/dy \geq 50$) p-p collisions, which will soon be collected at the LHC. We observe that fluctuations in the p-p interaction region can result in a sizable spatial eccentricity even for the most central p-p collisions. Under relatively mild assumptions on the nature of such fluctuations and on the eccentricity scaling of elliptic flow, we find that the resulting elliptic flow signal in high-multiplicity p-p collisions at the LHC becomes measurable with standard techniques.

A New Mechanism of Quark Energy Loss

We show that a heavy quark moving sufficiently fast through a quark-gluon plasma may lose energy by Cherenkov-radiating mesons. We demonstrate that this takes place in all strongly coupled, large-Nc plasmas with a gravity dual. The energy loss is exactly calculable in these models despite being an O(1/Nc)-effect. We discuss phenomenological implications for heavy-ion collision experiments.

A Photon Peak due to Strong Coupling

We show that if a flavour-less vector meson remains bound after deconfinement, and if its limiting velocity in the quark-gluon plasma is subluminal, then this meson produces a distinct peak in the spectrum of thermal photons emitted by the plasma. We also demonstrate that this effect is a universal property of all strongly coupled, large-$\nc$ plasmas with a gravity dual. For the $J/Ψ$ the corresponding peak lies between 3 and 5 GeV and could be observed at the LHC.
