The role of morphology on the emergence of topologically trivial surface states and selection rules in topological-insulator nano-particles

Confined electronic states and optical transitions in 3D topological insulator nanoparticles have been studied in the literature, assuming idealized geometries such as spheres or infinitely long cylinders, that allow to obtain analytical solutions to the corresponding eigenvalue equation within such geometries. In contrast, in this article we consider triangular-shaped nanoplates as a more realistic approximation to the experimentally observed morphologies of topological insulator nanoparticles. In this particular geometry, we obtain analytical expressions for the confined eigenstates and the corresponding energy spectrum. Moreover, by a spatial representation of the probability density distribution of these states, we further identify the conditions leading to the emergence of topologically trivial surface states as a result of geometric confinement. Finally, we also study the optical transitions and the corresponding selection rules imposed by the nanoparticle size and morphology.

Entropy exchange and thermal fluctuations in the Jaynes-Cummings model

The time-dependence of the quantum entropy for a two-level atom interacting with a single-cavity mode is computed using the Jaynes-Cummings model, when the initial state of the radiation field is prepared in a thermal state with temperature fluctuations. In order to describe the out-of-equilibrium situation, the Super Statistics approximation is implemented so that the gamma and the multi-level distribution functions are used to introduce the inverse temperature fluctuations. In the case of the gamma distribution, paralleling the Tsallis non-additive formalism, the entropy for the system is computed with the $q$-logarithm prescription, and the impact of the initial state of the atom is also taken into account. The results show that, in the first distribution, the $q$-parameter (related to the thermal fluctuations) modifies the partial entropies appreciably. In contrast, the way the inverse temperatures are distributed in the second one may lead to changes in the entropy functions.

Super-statistics and quantum entanglement in the isotropic spin-1/2 XX dimmer from a non-additive thermodynamics perspective

In this paper, the impact of temperature fluctuations in the entanglement of two qubits described by a spin-1/2 XX model is studied. To describe the out-of-equilibrium situation, super-statistics is used with fluctuations given by a $χ^2$ distribution function, and its free parameters are chosen in such a way that resembles the non-additive Tsallis thermodynamics. In order to preserve the Legendre structure of the thermal functions, particular energy constraints are imposed on the density operator and the internal energy. Analytical results are obtained using an additional set of constraints after a parametrization of the physical temperature. We show that the well-known parametrization may lead to undesirable values of the physical temperature so that by analyzing the entropy as a function of energy, the correct values are found. The quantum entanglement is obtained from the Concurrence and is compared with the case when the Tsallis restrictions are not imposed on the density operator.

Effects of Intense Magnetic Fields, High Temperature and Density on QCD-Related Phenomena

The effects of high-temperature, dense systems, and strong magnetic fields on Quantum Chromodynamics related phenomena are studied in different perspectives: in the high-temperature and densities, the QCD-phase diagram from the Linear Sigma Model point of view is computed. In particular, the CEP location and transition lines for chiral restoration were found. In the intense magnetic fields and high-gluon density, the gluon fusion and gluon splitting channels are proposed as new photon production sources to better explain the experimental data in the so-called "photon puzzle". Finally, the thermal and magnetic screening properties for gluons encoded into the polarization tensor were addressed in terms of the Debye mass.

Fermion mass and width in QED in a magnetic field

We revisit the calculation of the fermion self-energy in QED in the presence of a magnetic field. We show that, after carrying out the renormalization procedure and identifying the most general perturbative tensor structure for the modified fermion {mass operator} in the large field limit, the mass develops an imaginary part. This happens when account is made of the sub-leading contributions associated to Landau levels other than the lowest one. The imaginary part is associated to a spectral density describing the spread of the mass function in momentum. The center of the distribution corresponds to the magnetic-field modified mass. The width becomes small as the field intensity increases in such a way that for asymptotically large values of the field, when the separation between Landau levels becomes also large, the mass function describes a stable particle occupying only the lowest Landau level. For large but finite values of the magnetic field, the spectral density represents a finite probability for the fermion to occupy Landau levels other than the LLL.

Comments on "Superstatistical properties of the one-dimensional Dirac oscillator" by Abdelmalek Boumali et al

In this comment, we discuss the mathematical formalism used in Boumali et al. (2020) which describes the superstatistical thermal properties of a one-dimensional Dirac oscillator. In particular, we point out the importance of maintaining the Legendre structure unaltered to ensure an accurate description of the thermodynamic observables when a Tsallis-like statistical description is assumed. Also, we remark that all the negative poles have to take into account to calculate the Gibbs--Boltzmann partition function. Our findings show that the divergences obtained by the authors in the Helmholtz free energy, which are propagated to the other thermal properties, are a consequence of an incomplete partition function. Moreover, we prove that the restrictions over the $q$-parameter are no needed if an appropriate partition function describes the system.

Gluon polarization tensor and dispersion relation in a weakly magnetized medium

We study the polarization and dispersion properties of gluons moving within a weakly magnetized background at one-loop order. To this end, we show two alternative derivations of the charged fermion propagator in the weak field expansion and use this expression to compute the lowest order magnetic field correction to the gluon polarization tensor. We explicitly show that, in spite of its cumbersome appearance, the gluon polarization tensor is transverse as required by gauge invariance. We also show that none of the three polarization modes develops a magnetic mass and that gluons propagate along the light cone, non withstanding that Lorentz invariance is lost due to the presence of the magnetic field. By comparing with the expression for the gluon polarization tensor valid to all orders in the magnetic field, the existence of a second solution, corresponding to a finite gluon mass, is shown to be spurious and an artifact of the lowest order approximation in the field strength. We also study the strength of the polarization modes for real gluons. We conclude that, provided the spurious solutions are discarded, the lowest order approximation to the gluon polarization and dispersion properties is good as long as the field strength is small compared to the loop fermion mass.

Thermal corrections to the gluon magnetic Debye mass

We compute the gluon polarization tensor in a thermo-magnetic environment in the strong magnetic field limit at zero and high temperature. The magnetic field effects are introduced using Schwinger's proper time method. Thermal effects are computed in the HTL approximation. At zero temperature, we reproduce the well-known result whereby for a non-vanishing quark mass, the polarization tensor reduces to the parallel structure and its coefficient develops an imaginary part corresponding to the threshold for quark-antiquark pair production. This coefficient is infrared finite and simplifies considerably when the quark mass vanishes. Keeping always the field strength as the largest energy scale, in the high temperature regime we analyze two complementary hierarchies of scales: $q^2\ll m_f^2\ll T^2$ and $m_f^2\ll q^2\ll T^2$. In the latter, we show that the polarization tensor is infrared finite as $m_f$ goes to zero. In the former, we discuss the thermal corrections to the magnetic Debye mass.

Optical intersubband properties of a core-shell semiconductor-topological insulator quantum dot described by $θ$-Electrodynamics

The optical properties of a spherical topological insulator embedded concentrically in a single-electron system consisting of a core-shell GaAs quantum dot are analyzed, when the system is under a uniform external magnetic field. The topological insulator's magnetoelectric response is computed in the effective framework of $θ$-electrodynamics, which allows analytical calculations for the induced electric and magnetic potentials by Green's Function method. The GaAs Hamiltonian is constructed in the effective-mass approximation, and its corresponding Schrödinger equation is numerically solved through the Lagrange-mesh method. We compute the total absorption coefficients and refractive index changes given by the non-linear iterative density matrix formalism up to third order. Our results show that the presence of the magnetoelectric material causes new dipolar transitions otherwise not allowed. Also, an enhancement of the photon absorption is found when the incident light polarization is oriented parallel to the external magnetic field, in comparison with perpendicular polarization. Moreover, we report an appreciable blue shift in the optical functions when the values of the $θ$-parameter are increased. These results can be useful for indirect experimental measures of the magnetoelectric polarizability which is proportional to the QED fine-structure constant $α$.

Gluon polarization tensor in a magnetized medium: Analytic approach starting from the sum over Landau levels

We present an analytic method to compute the one-loop magnetic correction to the gluon polarization tensor starting from the Landau-level representation of the quark propagator in the presence of an external magnetic field. We show that the general expression contains the vacuum contribution that can be isolated from the zero-field limit for finite gluon momentum. The general tensor structure for the gluon polarization also contains two spurious terms that do not satisfy the transversality properties. However, we also show that the coefficients of this structures vanish and thus do not contribute to the polarization tensor, as expected. In order to check the validity of the expressions we study the strong and weak field limits and show that well established results are reproduced. The findings can be used to study the conditions for gluons to equilibrate with the magnetic field produced during the early stages of a relativistic heavy-ion collision.

Centrality dependence of photon yield and elliptic flow from gluon fusion and splitting induced by magnetic fields in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We compute the photon yield and elliptic flow coefficient in relativistic heavy-ion collisions from gluon fusion and splitting processes induced by a magnetic field for different centralities. The calculation accounts for the intense magnetic field and the high gluon occupation number at early times. The photon production induced by these process represents an excess contribution over calculations without magnetic field effects. We compare this excess to the difference between PHENIX data and recent hydrodynamic calculations for the photon transverse momentum distribution and elliptic flow coefficient $v_2$. The time evolution of the field strength and reaction volume is computed using UrQMD. We show that with reasonable values for the saturation scale, the calculation helps to better describe the experimental results obtained at RHIC energies for the lowest part of the transverse photon momentum at different centralities.

Super-statistical description of thermo-magnetic properties of a system of 2D GaAs quantum dots with gaussian confinement and Rashba spin-orbit interaction

We examine the effect of non-equilibrium processes modeled by the introduction of a generalized Boltzmann factor on the thermal and magnetic properties of an array of two-dimensional GaAs quantum dots in the presence of an external uniform and constant magnetic field. The model consists of a single-electron subject to a confining Gaussian potential with a spin-orbit interaction in the Rashba approach. We compute the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility within the formalism of $χ^2$-superstatistics from the exact solution of the Schrödinger equation. Furthermore, an analytic solution for the partition function allows a study of the impact of the number of subsystems on the superstatistical corrections and confirms that the ordinary thermo-magnetic properties are recovered whenever the thermal distribution can be approximated by a Dirac delta. Also, we found a progressive disappearance of the Schottky anomaly with decreasing number of subsystems, while the specific heat ceases to be a monotonically increasing function with respect to the average temperature when the $χ^2$-distribution is spread over a large range of temperatures. Remarkably, the introduction of fluctuations in the temperature is found to suppress the paramagnetic phase transition that would otherwise appear at low temperatures. Finally, we emphasize that an appropriate construction of the definition of physical observables is crucial for obtaining a correct description of the physics derived from a non-extensive construction of the entropy.

Impact of a topological defect and Rashba spin-orbit interaction on the thermo-magnetic and optical properties of a 2D semiconductor quantum dot with Gaussian confinement

In this paper, we examine the effect of introducing a conical disclination on the thermal and optical properties of a two dimensional GaAs quantum dot in the presence of a uniform and constant magnetic field. In particular, our model consists of a single-electron subject to a confining Gaussian potential with a spin-orbit interaction in the Rashba approach. We compute the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility from the exact solution of the Schrödinger equation via the canonical partition function, and it is shown that the peak structure of the Schottky anomaly is linearly displaced as a function of the topological defect. We found that such defect and the Rashba coupling modify the values of the temperature and magnetic field in which the system behaves as a paramagnetic material. Remarkably, the introduction of a conical disclination in the quantum dot relaxes the selection rules for the electronic transitions when an external electromagnetic field is applied. This creates a new set of allowed transitions causing the emergence of semi-suppressed resonances in the absorption coefficient as well as in the refractive index changes which are blue-shifted with respect to the regular transitions for a quantum dot without the defect.

Using the Linear Sigma Model with quarks to describe the QCD phase diagram and to locate the critical end point

We study the QCD phase diagram using the linear sigma model coupled to quarks. We compute the effective potential at finite temperature and quark chemical potential up to ring diagrams contribution. We show that, provided the values for the pseudo-critical temperature $T_c = 155$ MeV and critical baryon chemical potential $μ_{Bc} \simeq 1$ GeV, together with the vacuum sigma and pion masses. The model couplings can be fixed and that these in turn help to locate the region where the crossover transition line becomes first order.

Prompt photon yield and $v_2$ coefficient from gluon fusion induced by magnetic field in heavy-ion collision

We compute the production of prompt photons and the $v_2$ harmonic coefficient in relativistic heavy-ion collisions induced by gluon fusion in the presence of an intense magnetic field, during the early stages of the reaction. The calculations take into account several parameters which are relevant to the description of the experimental transverse momentum distribution, and elliptic flow for RHIC and LHC energies. The main imput is the strength of the magnetic field which varies in magnitude from 1 to 3 times the pion mass squared, and allows the gluon fusion that otherwise is forbidden in the absence of the field. The high gluon occupation number and the value of the saturation scale also play an important role in our calculation, as well as a flow velocity and geometrical factors. Our results support the idea that the origin of at least some of the photon excess observed in heavy-ion experiments may arise from magnetic field induced processes, and gives a good description of the experimental data.
