CDW-EIS calculations of atomic ionization by bare ions and antiprotons

We present \textit{ab initio} calculations of atomic ionization by bare ions and antiprotons within the continuum distorted-wave eikonal initial-state (CDW-EIS) model. The dataset covers atomic targets from H to Kr, impacted by bare ions over a broad range of projectile charges and by antiprotons. Particular attention is given to elements in periods 3 and 4 of the periodic table, which are relevant to pigment analysis and technologically important materials. The resulting subshell-resolved total ionization cross sections are made openly available through an online repository covering a broad range of projectile--target systems, occupied initial subshells, and projectile velocities. We analyze systematic trends in the cross sections, including their dependence on projectile charge and velocity, binding-energy scaling, and charge-sign effects in proton and antiproton impact. To extend the practical coverage of the database, we also develop a neural-network surrogate, CDWEIS-NN, trained on the subset of the database with projectile charge $|Z_\mathrm{P}|\leq 8$. The network interpolates the CDW-EIS results to additional projectile--target systems and impact energies, reproducing both held-out CDW-EIS calculations and the experimental benchmarks considered in this work with satisfactory accuracy.

The use of coherent states in the excitation and ionization of atoms by a short symmetric pulse

We propose a new model for describing the excitation of atoms by short symmetric pulses. The theory is based on the impulse approximation and incorporates a confining potential approximated by a harmonic oscillator. Results are presented for a wide variety of parameters, including field intensity and laser frequency. Permitted and forbidden transitions are analyzed in detail. The photon energy spectrum presents peaks attributed to multiphoton absorption. Our model demonstrates robustness and reliability, paving the way for addressing more complex scenarios.

Scaling rules for the ionization of biological molecules by highly charged ions

We investigate scaling rules for the ionization cross sections of multicharged ions on molecules of biological interest. The cross sections are obtained using a methodology presented in [Mendez et al. J. Phys B (2020)], which considers distorted-wave calculations for atomic targets combined with a molecular stoichiometric model. We examine ions with nuclear charges Z from +1 to +8 impacting on five nucleobases -adenine, cytosine, guanine, thymine, uracil-, tetrahydrofuran, pyrimidine, and water. We investigate scaling rules of the ionization cross section with the ion charge and the number of active electrons per molecule. Combining these two features, we define a scaling law for any ion and molecular target, which is valid in the intermediate to high energy range, i.e., 0.2-5 MeV/amu for oxygen impact. Thus, the forty ion-molecule systems analyzed here can be merged into a single band. We confirm the generality of our independent scaling law with several collisional systems.
