Creating a Traversable Wormhole

We argue that one can nucleate a traversable wormhole via a nonperturbative process in quantum gravity. To support this, we construct spacetimes in which there are instantons giving a finite probability for a test cosmic string to break and produce two particles on its ends. One should be able to replace the particles with small black holes with only small changes to the spacetime away from the horizons. The black holes are then created with their horizons identified, so this is an example of nucleating a wormhole. Unlike previous examples where the created black holes accelerate apart, in our case they remain essentially at rest. This is important since wormholes become harder and harder to make traversable as their mouths become widely separated, and since traversability can be destroyed by Unruh radiation. In our case, back-reaction from quantum fields can make the wormhole traversable.

Evidence for the existence of a novel class of supersymmetric black holes with AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ asymptotics

We construct a new class of charged, rotating hairy black holes in a consistent truncation of $\mathcal{N} = 8$ supergravity, which retains one charged scalar field and a U$(1)$ gauge field. These hairy solutions can be uplifted to solutions of type IIB supergravity with AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ asymptotics. We find rotating hairy black holes with finite entropy arbitrarily close to the supersymmetric bound - the resulting supersymmetric solution is a one-parameter extension of the Gutowski-Reall solution. These solutions have finite curvature invariants (including at extremality), but in the extremal limit exhibit diverging tidal forces in the near horizon region. Nevertheless, we argue that these limiting supersymmetric black holes can be consistently studied within the supergravity approximation.

Attempts at vacuum counterexamples to cosmic censorship in AdS

We consider vacuum solutions of four dimensional general relativity with $Λ< 0$. We numerically construct stationary solutions that asymptotically approach a boundary metric with differential rotation. Smooth solutions only exist up to a critical rotation. We thus argue that increasing the differential rotation by a finite amount will cause the curvature to grow without bound. This holds for both zero and nonzero temperature, and both compact and noncompact boundaries. However, the boundary metric always develops an ergoregion before reaching the critical rotation, which probably means that the energy is unbounded from below for these counterexamples to cosmic censorship.

Strong cosmic censorship: taking the rough with the smooth

It has been argued that the strong cosmic censorship conjecture is violated by Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black holes: for near-extremal black holes, generic scalar field perturbations arising from smooth initial data have finite energy at the Cauchy horizon even though they are not continuously differentiable there. In this paper, we consider the analogous problem for coupled gravitational and electromagnetic perturbations. We find that such perturbations exhibit a much worse violation of strong cosmic censorship: for a sufficiently large near-extremal black hole, perturbations arising from smooth initial data can be extended through the Cauchy horizon in an arbitrarily smooth way. This is in apparent contradiction with an old argument in favour of strong cosmic censorship. We resolve this contradiction by showing that this old argument is valid only for initial data that is not smooth. This is in agreement with the recent proposal that, to recover strong cosmic censorship, one must allow rough initial data.

Deforming black holes in AdS

We investigate how changes in the boundary metric affect the shape of AdS black holes. Most of our work is analytic and based on the AdS C-metric. Both asymptotically hyperbolic and compact black holes are studied. It has recently been shown that the AdS C-metric contains configurations of highly deformed black holes, and we show that these deformations are usually the result of similar deformations of the boundary metric. However, quite surprisingly, we also find cases where the horizon is insensitive to certain large changes in the boundary geometry. This motivates the search for a new family of black hole solutions with the same boundary geometry in which the horizon does respond to the changes in the boundary. We numerically construct these solutions and we (numerically) explore how the horizon response to boundary deformations depends on temperature.

Strong cosmic censorship for charged de Sitter black holes with a charged scalar field

It has been shown recently that the strong cosmic censorship conjecture is violated by near-extremal Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black holes. We investigate whether the introduction of a charged scalar field can rescue strong cosmic censorship. We find that such a field improves the situation but there is always a neighbourhood of extremality in which strong cosmic censorship is violated by perturbations arising from smooth initial data.

Massive Vector Fields in Rotating Black-Hole Spacetimes: Separability and Quasinormal Modes

We demonstrate the separability of the massive vector (Proca) field equation in general Kerr-NUT-(A)dS black hole spacetimes in any number of dimensions, filling a long-standing gap in the literature. The obtained separated equations are studied in more detail for the four-dimensional Kerr geometry and the corresponding quasinormal modes are calculated. Two of the three independent polarizations of the Proca field are shown to emerge from the separation ansatz and the results are found in a perfect agreement with those of the recent numerical study where the full coupled partial differential equations were tackled without using the separability property.

Holographic dual of hot Polchinski-Strassler quark-gluon plasma

We construct the supergravity dual of the hot quark-gluon plasma in the mass-deformed ${\cal N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills theory (also known as ${\cal N}=1^*$). The full ten-dimensional type IIB holographic dual is described by 20 functions of two variables, which we determine numerically, and it contains a black hole with $S^5$ horizon topology. As we lower the temperature to around half of the mass of the chiral multiplets, we find evidence for (most likely a first-order) phase transition, which could lead either to one of the Polchinski-Strassler confining, screening, or oblique vacua with polarized branes, or to an intermediate phase corresponding to blackened polarized branes with an $S^2 \times S^3$ horizon topology. This phase transition is a feature that could in principle be seen by putting the theory on the lattice, and thus our result for the ratio of the chiral multiplet mass to the phase transition temperature, $m_c/T = 2.15467491205(6)$, constitutes the first prediction of string theory and AdS/CFT that could be independently checked via four-dimensional super-QCD lattice computation. We also construct the black-hole solution in certain five-dimensional gauged supergravity truncations and, without directly using uplift/reduction formulae, we find strong evidence that the five- and ten-dimensional solutions are the same. This indicates that five-dimensional gauged supergravity is powerful enough to capture the physics of the high-temperature deconfined phase of the Polchinski-Strassler quark-gluon plasma.

Scalar Hairy Black Holes in Four Dimensions are Unstable

We present a numerical analysis of the stability properties of the black holes with scalar hair constructed by Herdeiro and Radu. We prove the existence of a novel gauge where the scalar field perturbations decouple from the metric perturbations, and analyse the resulting quasinormal mode spectrum. We find unstable modes with characteristic growth rates which for uniformly small hair are almost identical to those of a massive scalar field on a fixed Kerr background.

Charting the AdS Islands of Stability with Multi-oscillators?

We propose the existence of an infinite-parameter family of solutions in AdS that oscillate on any number of non-commensurate frequencies. Some of these solutions appear stable when perturbed, and we suggest that they can be used to map out the AdS "islands of stability". By numerically constructing two-frequency solutions and exploring their parameter space, we find that both collapse and non-collapse are generic scenarios near AdS. Unlike other approaches, our results are valid on any timescale and do not rely on perturbation theory.

Stirring a black hole

We present novel asymptotically global AdS$_4$ solutions, constructed by turning on a dipolar differential rotation at the conformal boundary. At fixed energy and boundary profile, we find two different geometries: a horizonless spacetime, and a deformed, hourglass shaped black hole with zero net angular momentum. Both solutions exist up to some maximum amplitudes of the boundary profile, and develop an ergoregion attached to the boundary before the maximum amplitude is reached. We show that both spacetimes develop hair as soon as the ergoregion develops. Furthermore, we discuss the full phase diagram, including the possibility of phases with disconnected horizons, by considering the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations for a spinning test particle. Finally, we provide a first principle derivation of the superradiant bound purely from CFT data, and outline possible scenarios for the late time evolution of the system.

Strong cosmic censorship in de Sitter space

Recent work indicates that the strong cosmic censorship hypothesis is violated by nearly extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes. It was argued that perturbations of such a black hole decay sufficiently rapidly that the perturbed spacetime can be extended across the Cauchy horizon as a weak solution of the equations of motion. In this paper we consider the case of Kerr-de Sitter black holes. We find that, for any non-extremal value of the black hole parameters, there are quasinormal modes which decay sufficiently slowly to ensure that strong cosmic censorship is respected. Our analysis covers both scalar field and linearized gravitational perturbations.

Constraining the mass of dark photons and axion-like particles through black-hole superradiance

Ultralight bosons and axion-like particles appear naturally in different scenarios and could solve some long-standing puzzles. Their detection is challenging, and all direct methods hinge on unknown couplings to the Standard Model of particle physics. However, the universal coupling to gravity provides model-independent signatures for these fields. We explore here the superradiant instability of spinning black holes triggered in the presence of such fields. The instability taps angular momentum from and limits the maximum spin of astrophysical black holes. We compute, for the first time, the spectrum of the most unstable modes of a massive vector (Proca) field for generic black-hole spin and Proca mass. The observed stability of the inner disk of stellar-mass black holes can be used to derive \emph{direct} constraints on the mass of dark photons in the mass range $ 10^{-13}\,{\rm eV}\lesssim m_V \lesssim 3\times 10^{-12}\,{\rm eV}$. By including also higher azimuthal modes, similar constraints apply to axion-like particles in the mass range $6\times10^{-13}\,{\rm eV}\lesssim m_{\rm ALP} \lesssim 10^{-11}\, {\rm eV}$. Likewise, mass and spin distributions of supermassive BHs --~as measured through continuum fitting, K$α$ iron line, or with the future space-based gravitational-wave detector LISA~-- imply indirect bounds in the mass range approximately $10^{-19}\,{\rm eV}\lesssim m_V, m_{\rm ALP} \lesssim 10^{-13}\, {\rm eV}$, for both axion-like particles and dark photons. Overall, superradiance allows to explore a region of approximately $8$ orders of magnitude in the mass of ultralight bosons.

Lattice Black Branes: Sphere Packing in General Relativity

We perturbatively construct asymptotically $\mathbb{R}^{1,3}\times\mathbb{T}^2$ black branes with multiple inhomogeneous directions and show that some of them are thermodynamically preferred over uniform branes in both the microcanonical and canonical ensembles. This demonstrates that, unlike five-dimensional black strings, the instability of some unstable black branes has a plausible endpoint that does not require a violation of cosmic censorship.

Collapse and Nonlinear Instability of AdS with Angular Momenta

We present a numerical study of rotational dynamics in AdS$_5$ with equal angular momenta in the presence of a complex doublet scalar field. We determine that the endpoint of gravitational collapse is a Myers-Perry black hole for high energies and a hairy black hole for low energies. We investigate the timescale for collapse at low energies $E$, keeping the angular momenta $J\propto E$ in AdS length units. We find that the inclusion of angular momenta delays the collapse time, but retains a $t\sim1/E$ scaling. We perturb and evolve rotating boson stars, and find that boson stars near AdS appear stable, but those sufficiently far from AdS are unstable. We find that the dynamics of the boson star instability depend on the perturbation, resulting either in collapse to a Myers-Perry black hole, or development towards a stable oscillating solution.

Violating weak cosmic censorship in AdS$_4$

We consider time-dependent solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations using anti-de Sitter (AdS) boundary conditions, and provide the first counterexample to the weak cosmic censorship conjecture in four spacetime dimensions. Our counterexample is entirely formulated in the Poincaré patch of AdS. We claim that our results have important consequences for quantum gravity, most notably to the weak gravity conjecture.

AdS nonlinear instability: breaking spherical and axial symmetries

Considerable effort has been dedicated to study the nonlinear instability of Anti-de Sitter (AdS) within spherical symmetry, but little is known about this nonlinear instability in the purely gravitational sector, where spherical symmetry is necessarily broken. In \cite{Bizon:2011gg} the onset of such nonlinear instability was associated with the existence of irremovable secular resonances at third order in perturbation theory. Furthermore, it was also conjectured in \cite{Bizon:2011gg} that certain very fine tuned initial data would not collapse. Such solutions, upon linearisation, correspond to individual normal modes of AdS, which can be consistently backreacted to all orders in perturbation theory. However, the analysis of \cite{Bizon:2011gg} was restricted to spherical symmetry. The perturbative arguments of \cite{Bizon:2011gg} were then generalised to gravitational perturbations in \cite{Dias:2011ss}, and in particular certain time-periodic solutions were also conjectured to exist - these were coined geons. However, in \cite{Dias:2011ss}, only a certain class of perturbations was considered, for which the perturbative analysis considerably simplifies. In this manuscript we present details of the systematic computational formalism and an exhaustive and complementary analysis of physical properties of the geons and gravitational AdS instability that were absent in our companion Letter \cite{Dias:2016ewl}. In particular, we find that, unlike in spherical symmetry, a (single) gravitational normal mode of AdS can be backreacted to generate a nonlinear solution only in very exceptional circumstances. We also show that weak turbulent perturbative theory predicts the existence of direct and inverse cascades, and give evidence suggesting that the former dominates the latter for equal energy two-mode seeds.

Mass-deformed M2 branes in Stenzel space

We obtain finite-temperature M2 black branes in 11-dimensional supergravity, in a $G_4$-flux background whose self-dual part approaches a solution of Cvetič, Gibbons, Lü, and Pope, based upon Stenzel's family of Ricci-flat Kähler deformed cones. Our solutions are asymptotically $AdS_4$ times a 7-dimensional Stiefel manifold $V_{5,2}$, and the branes are ``smeared'' to retain $SO(5)$ symmetry in the internal space. The solutions represent a mass deformation of the corresponding dual $CFT_3$, whose full description is at this time only partially-understood. We investigate the possibility of a confinement/de-confinement phase transition analogous to the $AdS_5 \times S^5$ case, and a possible Gregory-Laflamme type instability which could lead to polarised brane solutions which break $SO(5)$. We discuss possible consequences for AdS/CFT and the KKLT cosmological uplift mechanism.
