Deep Learning Statistical Arbitrage

Statistical arbitrage exploits temporal price differences between similar assets. We develop a unifying conceptual framework for statistical arbitrage and a novel data driven solution. First, we construct arbitrage portfolios of similar assets as residual portfolios from conditional latent asset pricing factors. Second, we extract their time series signals with a powerful machine-learning time-series solution, a convolutional transformer. Lastly, we use these signals to form an optimal trading policy, that maximizes risk-adjusted returns under constraints. Our comprehensive empirical study on daily US equities shows a high compensation for arbitrageurs to enforce the law of one price. Our arbitrage strategies obtain consistently high out-of-sample mean returns and Sharpe ratios, and substantially outperform all benchmark approaches.

High-dimensional statistical arbitrage with factor models and stochastic control

The present paper provides a study of high-dimensional statistical arbitrage that combines factor models with the tools from stochastic control, obtaining closed-form optimal strategies which are both interpretable and computationally implementable in a high-dimensional setting. Our setup is based on a general statistically-constructed factor model with mean-reverting residuals, in which we show how to construct analytically market-neutral portfolios and we analyze the problem of investing optimally in continuous time and finite horizon under exponential and mean-variance utilities. We also extend our model to incorporate constraints on the investor's portfolio like dollar-neutrality and market frictions in the form of temporary quadratic transaction costs, provide extensive Monte Carlo simulations of the previous strategies with 100 assets, and describe further possible extensions of our work.

Ratio sets of random sets

We study the typical behavior of the size of the ratio set $A/A$ for a random subset $A\subset \{1,\dots , n\}$. For example, we prove that $|A/A|\sim \frac{2\text{Li}_2(3/4)}{π^2}n^2 $ for almost all subsets $A \subset\{1,\dots ,n\}$. We also prove that the proportion of visible lattice points in the lattice $A_1\times\cdots \times A_d$, where $A_i$ is taken at random in $[1,n]$ with $\mathbb P(m\in A_i)=α_i$ for any $m\in [1,n]$, is asymptotic to a constant $μ(α_1,\dots,α_d)$ that involves the polylogarithm of order $d$.
