Persistence of symmetry-protected Dirac points at the surface of the topological crystalline insulator SnTe upon impurity doping

We investigate the effect of a non-magnetic donor impurity located at the surface of the SnTe topological crystalline insulator. In particular, the changes on the surface states due to a Sb impurity atom are analyzed by means of ab initio simulations of pristine and impurity-doped SnTe. Both semi-infinite and slab geometries are considered within the first-principles approach. Furthermore, minimal and Green's function continuum models are proposed with the same goal. We find that the Dirac cones are shifted down in energy upon doping; this shift strongly depends on the position of the impurity with respect to the surface. In addition, we observe that the width of the impurity band presents an even-odd behavior by varying the position of the impurity. This behavior is related to the position of the nodes of the wave function with respect to the surface, and hence it is a manifestation of confinement effects. We compare slab and semi-infinite geometries within the ab initio approach, demonstrating that the surface states remain gapless and their spin textures are unaltered in the doped semi-infinite system. In the slab geometry, a gap opens due to hybridization of the states localized at opposite surfaces. Finally, by means of a continuum model, we extrapolate our results to arbitrary positions of the impurity, clearly showing a non-monotonic behavior of the Dirac cone.

Spin-orbit proximity effect in graphene on metallic substrates: decoration vs intercalation with metal adatoms

The so-called spin-orbit proximity effect experimentally realized in graphene (G) on several different heavy metal surfaces opens a new perspective to engineer the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for new generation spintronics devices. Here, via large-scale density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed for two distinct graphene/metal models, G/Pt(111) and G/Au/Ni(111), we show that the spin-orbit splitting of the Dirac cones (DCs) in these stuctures might be enhanced by either adsorption of adatoms on top of graphene (decoration) or between the graphene and the metal (intercalation). While the decoration by inducing strong graphene-adatom interaction suppresses the linearity of the G's $π$ bands, the intercalated structures reveal a weaker adatom-mediated graphene/substrate hybridization which preserves well-defined although broadened DCs. Remarkably, the intercalated G/Pt(111) structure exhibits splittings considerably larger than the defect-free case.

Unveiling the Penta-Silicene nature of perfectly aligned single and double strand Si-nanoribbons on Ag(110)

We reveal through extensive DFT calculations, confronted to key experimental facts, the hidden penta-silicene nature of single and double strand chiral Si nanoribbons perfectly aligned on Ag(110) surfaces, that were discovered in 2005, but whose structure remained elusive. We thus simultaneously demonstrate the existence of penta-silicene, a recently conjectured novel pentagonal silicon allotrope, which remained unveiled for 11 years, and which materializes a paradigmatic shift from normal hexagonal silicene.
