Causality and existence of solutions of relativistic viscous fluid dynamics with gravity

A new approach is described to help improve the foundations of relativistic viscous fluid dynamics and its coupling to general relativity. Focusing on neutral conformal fluids constructed solely in terms of hydrodynamic variables, we derive the most general viscous energy-momentum tensor yielding equations of motion of second order in the derivatives, which is shown to provide a novel type of generalization of the relativistic Navier-Stokes equations for which causality holds. We show how this energy-momentum tensor may be derived from conformal kinetic theory. We rigorously prove existence, uniqueness, and causality of solutions of this theory (in the full nonlinear regime) both in a Minkowski background and also when the fluid is dynamically coupled to Einstein's equations. Linearized disturbances around equilibrium in Minkowski spacetime are stable in this causal theory. A numerical study reveals the presence of an out-of-equilibrium hydrodynamic attractor for a rapidly expanding fluid. Further properties are also studied and a brief discussion of how this approach can be generalized to non-conformal fluids is presented.

Collective effects in nuclear collisions: theory overview

In these proceedings I review recent developments concerning the hydrodynamic description of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). I report on the progress towards more realistic simulations and discuss new features about the QGP transport coefficients of the hot (and baryon dense) medium formed in heavy ion collisions. A brief discussion is included on the applicability of hydrodynamics and its extension to the far-from-equilibrium regime.

Hydrodynamic attractor and the fate of perturbative expansions in Gubser flow

Perturbative expansions, such as the well-known gradient series and the recently proposed slow-roll expansion, have been recently used to investigate the emergence of hydrodynamic behavior in systems undergoing Bjorken flow. In this paper we determine for the first time the large order behavior of these perturbative expansions in relativistic hydrodynamics in the case of Gubser flow. While both series diverge, the slow-roll series can provide a much better overall description of the system's dynamics than the gradient expansion when both series are truncated at low orders. The truncated slow-roll series can also describe the attractor solution of Gubser flow as long as the system is sufficiently close to equilibrium near the origin (i.e., $ρ=0$) in $dS_3 \otimes \mathbb{R}$. Differently than the case of Bjorken flow, here we show that the Gubser flow attractor solution is not solely a function of the effective Knudsen number $τ_R \sqrt{σ_{μν}σ^{μν}} \sim τ_R\, \tanhρ$. Our results give further support to the idea that new \emph{resummed} constitutiv relations between dissipative currents and the gradients of conserved quantities can emerge in systems far from equilibrium that are beyond the regime of validity of the usual gradient expansion.

Effect of the QCD equation of state and strange hadronic resonances on multiparticle correlations in heavy ion collisions

The QCD equation of state at zero baryon chemical potential is the only element of the standard dynamical framework to describe heavy ion collisions that can be directly determined from first principles. Continuum extrapolated lattice QCD equations of state have been computed using 2+1 quark flavors (up/down and strange) as well as 2+1+1 flavors to investigate the effect of thermalized charm quarks on QCD thermodynamics. Lattice results have also indicated the presence of new strange resonances that not only contribute to the equation of state of QCD matter but also affect hadronic afterburners used to model the later stages of heavy ion collisions. We investigate how these new developments obtained from first principles calculations affect multiparticle correlations in heavy ion collisions. We compare the commonly used equation of state S95n-v1, which was constructed using what are now considered outdated lattice results and hadron states, to the current state-of-the-art lattice QCD equations of state with 2+1 and 2+1+1 flavors coupled to the most up-to-date hadronic resonances and their decays. New hadronic resonances lead to an enhancement in the hadronic spectra at intermediate $p_T$. Using an outdated equation of state can directly affect the extraction of the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio, $η/s$, of the quark-gluon plasma and results for different flow observables. The effects of the QCD equation of state on multiparticle correlations of identified particles are determined for both AuAu $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV and PbPb $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV collisions. New insights into the $v_2\{2\}$ to $v_3\{2\}$ puzzle in ultracentral collisions are found. Flow observables of heavier particles exhibit more non-linear behavior regardless of the assumptions about the equation of state, which may provide a new way to constrain the temperature dependence of $η/s$.

Critical point in the phase diagram of primordial quark-gluon matter from black hole physics

Strongly interacting matter undergoes a crossover phase transition at high temperatures $T\sim 10^{12}$ K and zero net-baryon density. A fundamental question in the theory of strong interactions, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), is whether a hot and dense system of quarks and gluons displays critical phenomena when doped with more quarks than antiquarks, where net-baryon number fluctuations diverge. Recent lattice QCD work indicates that such a critical point can only occur in the baryon dense regime of the theory, which defies a description from first principles calculations. Here we use the holographic gauge/gravity correspondence to map the fluctuations of baryon charge in the dense quark-gluon liquid onto a numerically tractable gravitational problem involving the charge fluctuations of holographic black holes. This approach quantitatively reproduces ab initio results for the lowest order moments of the baryon fluctuations and makes predictions for the higher order baryon susceptibilities and also for the location of the critical point, which is found to be within the reach of heavy ion collision experiments.

Analytical attractor and the divergence of the slow-roll expansion in relativistic hydrodynamics

We find the general analytical solution of the viscous relativistic hydrodynamic equations (in the absence of bulk viscosity and chemical potential) for a Bjorken expanding fluid with a constant shear viscosity relaxation time. We analytically determine the hydrodynamic attractor of this fluid and discuss its properties. We show for the first time that the slow-roll expansion, a commonly used approach to characterize the attractor, diverges. This is shown to hold also in a conformal plasma. The gradient expansion is found to converge in an example where causality and stability are violated.

Event-by-event $v_n$ correlations of soft hadrons and heavy mesons in heavy ion collisions

In this paper heavy quark energy loss models are embedded in full event-by-event viscous hydrodynamic simulations to investigate the nuclear suppression factor and azimuthal anisotropy of D$^0$ mesons in PbPb collisions at 5.02 TeV in the $p_T$ range 8-40 GeV. In our model calculations, the $R_\text{AA}$ of D$^0$ mesons is consistent with experimental data from the CMS experiment. We present the first calculations of heavy flavor cumulants $v_2\{2\}$ and $v_3\{2\}$ (and also discuss $v_2\{4\}$), which is also consistent with experimental data. Event-shape engineering techniques are used to compute the event-by-event correlation between the soft hadron $v_n$ and the heavy meson $v_n$. We predict a linear correlation between these observables on an event-by-event basis.

The anisotropic non-equilibrium hydrodynamic attractor

We determine the dynamical attractors associated with anisotropic hydrodynamics (aHydro) and the DNMR equations for a 0+1d conformal system using kinetic theory in the relaxation time approximation. We compare our results to the non-equilibrium attractor obtained from exact solution of the 0+1d conformal Boltzmann equation, Navier-Stokes theory, and second-order Mueller-Israel-Stewart theory. We demonstrate that the aHydro attractor equation resums an infinite number of terms in the inverse Reynolds number. The resulting resummed aHydro attractor possesses a positive longitudinal to transverse pressure ratio and is virtually indistinguishable from the exact attractor. This suggests that kinetic theory involves not only a resummation in gradients (Knudsen number) but also a novel resummation in inverse Reynolds number. We also demonstrate that the DNMR result provides a better approximation to the exact kinetic theory attractor than Mueller-Israel-Stewart theory. Finally, we introduce a new method for obtaining approximate aHydro equations which relies solely on an expansion in inverse Reynolds number, carry out this expansion to third order, and compare these third-order results to the exact kinetic theory solution.

Event-by-event $v_n$ correlations of soft hadrons and heavy mesons in heavy ion collisions

Combining event-by-event hydrodynamics with heavy quark energy loss we compute correlations between the heavy and soft sectors for elliptic and triangular flow harmonics $v_2$ and $v_3$ of D$^0$ mesons in PbPb collisions at $2.76$ TeV and $5.02$ TeV. Our results indicate that $v_3$ is strongly influenced by the fragmentation temperature and that it builds up later than $v_2$ during the evolution of the system.

Dynamical vs. equilibrium properties of the QCD phase transition: a holographic perspective

We employ an Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) holographic model, which is known to be in good agreement with lattice results for the QCD equation of state with $(2+1)$ flavors and physical quark masses, to investigate the temperature and baryon chemical potential dependence of the susceptibilities, conductivities, and diffusion coefficients associated with baryon, electric, and strangeness conserved charges. We also determine how the bulk and shear viscosities of the plasma vary in the plane of temperature and baryon chemical potential. The diffusion of conserved charges and the hydrodynamic viscosities in a baryon rich quark-gluon plasma are found to be suppressed with respect to the zero net baryon case. The transition temperatures associated with equilibrium and non-equilibrium quantities are determined as a function of the baryon chemical potential for the first time. Because of the crossover nature of the QCD phase transition even at moderately large values of the chemical potential, we find that the transition temperatures associated with different quantities are spread in the interval between $130-200$ MeV and they all decrease with increasing baryon chemical potential.

Momentum transport in strongly coupled anisotropic plasmas in the presence of strong magnetic fields

We present a holographic perspective on momentum transport in strongly coupled, anisotropic non-Abelian plasmas in the presence of strong magnetic fields. We compute the anisotropic heavy quark drag forces and Langevin diffusion coefficients and also the anisotropic shear viscosities for two different holographic models, namely, a top-down deformation of strongly coupled $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Super-Yang-Mills (SYM) theory triggered by an external Abelian magnetic field, and a bottom-up Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMD) model which is able to provide a quantitative description of lattice QCD thermodynamics with $(2+1)$-flavors at both zero and nonzero magnetic fields. We find that, in general, energy loss and momentum diffusion through strongly coupled anisotropic plasmas are enhanced by a magnetic field being larger in transverse directions than in the direction parallel to the magnetic field. Moreover, the anisotropic shear viscosity coefficient is smaller in the direction of the magnetic field than in the plane perpendicular to the field, which indicates that strongly coupled anisotropic plasmas become closer to the perfect fluid limit along the magnetic field. We also present, in the context of the EMD model, holographic predictions for the entropy density and the crossover critical temperature in a wider region of the $(T,B)$ phase diagram that has not yet been covered by lattice simulations. Our results for the transport coefficients in the phenomenologically realistic magnetic EMD model could be readily used as inputs in numerical codes for magnetohydrodynamics.

The onset of fluid-dynamical behavior in relativistic kinetic theory

In this proceedings we discuss recent findings regarding the large order behavior of the Chapman-Enskog expansion in relativistic kinetic theory. It is shown that this series in powers of the Knudsen number has zero radius of convergence in the case of a Bjorken expanding fluid described by the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation time approximation. This divergence stems from the presence of non-hydrodynamic modes, which give non-perturbative contributions to the Knudsen series.

Linde problem in Yang-Mills theory compactified on $\mathbb{R}^2 \times \mathbb{T}^2$

We investigate the perturbative expansion in $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills theory compactified on $\mathbb{R}^2\times \mathbb{T}^2$ where the compact space is a torus $\mathbb{T}^2= S^1_β\times S^1_{L}$, with $S^1_β$ being a thermal circle with period $β=1/T$ ($T$ is the temperature) while $S^1_L$ is a circle with finite length $L=1/M$, where $M$ is an energy scale. A Linde-type analysis indicates that perturbative calculations for the pressure in this theory break down already at order $\mathcal{O}(g^2)$ due to the presence of a non-perturbative scale $\sim g \sqrt{TM}$. We conjecture that a similar result should hold if the torus is replaced by any other compact surface of genus one.

Critical behavior of non-hydrodynamic quasinormal modes in a strongly coupled plasma

We study the behavior of quasinormal modes in a top-down holographic dual corresponding to a strongly coupled $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super Yang-Mills plasma charged under a $U(1)$ subgroup of the global $SU(4)$ R-symmetry. In particular, we analyze the spectra of quasinormal modes in the external scalar and vector diffusion channels near the critical point and obtain the behavior of the characteristic equilibration times of the plasma as the system evolves towards the critical point of its phase diagram. Except close to the critical point, we observe that by increasing the chemical potential one generally increases the damping rate of the quasinormal modes, which leads to a reduction of the characteristic equilibration times in the dual strongly coupled plasma. However, as one approaches the critical point the typical equilibration time (as estimated from the lowest non-hydrodynamic quasinormal mode frequency) increases, although remaining finite, while its derivative with respect to the chemical potential diverges with exponent -1/2. We also find a purely imaginary non-hydrodynamical mode in the vector diffusion channel at nonzero chemical potential which dictates the equilibration time in this channel near the critical point.

Heavy meson flow harmonics in event-by-event viscous relativistic hydrodynamics

Event-by-event viscous hydrodynamics is combined with heavy quark energy loss models to compute heavy flavor flow cumulants $v_2\{2\}$, $v_3\{2\}$, and $v_2\{4\}$ as well as the nuclear modification factors of $D^0$ and $B^0$ mesons in PbPb collisions at 2.76 TeV. Our results indicate that bottom quarks can flow as much as charm quarks in the $p_T$ range 8--30 GeV.

Polyakov loop and heavy quark entropy in strong magnetic fields from holographic black hole engineering

We investigate the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the Polyakov loop and heavy quark entropy in a bottom-up Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMD) holographic model for the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP) that quantitatively matches lattice data for the $(2+1)$-flavor QCD equation of state at finite magnetic field and physical quark masses. We compare the holographic EMD model results for the Polyakov loop at zero and nonzero magnetic fields and the heavy quark entropy at vanishing magnetic field with the latest lattice data available for these observables and find good agreement for temperatures $T\gtrsim 150$ MeV and magnetic fields $eB\lesssim 1$ GeV$^2$. Predictions for the behavior of the heavy quark entropy at nonzero magnetic fields are made that could be readily tested on the lattice.

Entropy Production, Hydrodynamics, and Resurgence in the Primordial Quark-Gluon Plasma from Holography

Microseconds after the Big Bang quarks and gluons formed a strongly-coupled non-conformal liquid driven out-of-equilibrium by the expansion of the Universe. We use holography to determine the non-equilibrium behavior of this liquid in a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker Universe and develop an expansion for the corresponding entropy production in terms of the derivatives of the cosmological scale factor. We show that the resulting series has zero radius of convergence and we discuss its resurgent properties. Finally, we compute the resummed entropy production rate in de Sitter Universe at late times and show that the leading order approximation given by bulk viscosity effects can strongly overestimate/underestimate the rate depending on the microscopic parameters.

Towards a quantitative understanding of high $p_T$ flow harmonics

In this proceedings I briefly review the recent progress achieved on the calculation of $v_n$ at high $p_T$ via the coupling of a jet energy loss model with full event-by-event viscous hydrodynamics. It is shown that that this framework can simultaneously describe experimental data for $R_{AA}$, $v_2$, and $v_3$ at high $p_T$. High $p_T$ $v_2$ is found to be approximately linearly correlated with the soft $v_2$ on an event-by-event basis, which opens up a new way to correlate soft and hard observables in heavy ion collisions.
