Stability and Hopf Bifurcation in an Hexagonal Governor System With a Spring

In this paper we study the Lyapunov stability and the Hopf bifurcation in a system coupling an hexagonal centrifugal governor with a steam engine. Here are given sufficient conditions for the stability of the equilibrium state and of the bifurcating periodic orbit. These conditions are expressed in terms of the physical parameters of the system, and hold for parameters outside a variety of codimension two.

Bifurcation Analysis of the Watt Governor System

This paper pursues the study carried out by the authors in {\it Stability and Hopf bifurcation in the Watt governor system} \cite{smb}, focusing on the codimension one Hopf bifurcations in the centrifugal Watt governor differential system, as presented in Pontryagin's book {\it Ordinary Differential Equations}, \cite{pon}. Here are studied the codimension two and three Hopf bifurcations and the pertinent Lyapunov stability coefficients and bifurcation diagrams, illustrating the number, types and positions of bifurcating small amplitude periodic orbits, are determined. As a consequence it is found a region in the space of parameters where an attracting periodic orbit coexists with an attracting equilibrium.

Lines of Principal Curvature on Canal Surfaces in R^3

In this paper are determined the principal curvatures and principal curvature lines on canal surfaces which are the envelopes of families of spheres with variable radius and centers moving along a closed regular curve in R^3. By means of a connection of the differential equations for these curvature lines and real Riccati equations, it is established that canal surfaces have at most two isolated periodic principal lines. Examples of canal surfaces with two simple and one double periodic principal lines are given.

Stability and Hopf Bifurcation in the Watt Governor System

In this paper we study the Lyapunov stability and Hopf bifurcation in a system coupling a Watt-centrifugal-governor with a steam-engine. Sufficient conditions for the stability of the equilibrium state in terms of the physical parameters and of the bifurcating periodic orbit at most critical parameters on the bifurcation surface are given.

Lines of Principal Curvature near Singular End Points of Surfaces in R3

In this paper are studied the nets of principal curvature lines on surfaces embedded in Euclidean $3-$space near their end points, at which the surfaces tend to infinity. This is a natural complement and extension to smooth surfaces of the work of Garcia and Sotomayor (1996), devoted to the study of principal curvature nets which are structurally stable -- do not change topologically-- under small perturbations on the coefficients of the equations defining algebraic surfaces. This paper goes one step further and classifies the patterns of the most common and stable behaviors at the ends, present also in generic families of surfaces depending on one-parameter.

Lines of Mean Curvature on Surfaces Immersed in R3

Associated to oriented surfaces immersed in R^3 here are studied pairs of transversal foliations with singularities, defined on the Elliptic region, where the Gaussian curvature K, given by the product of the principal curvatures k_1, k_2 of the immersion, is positive. The leaves of the foliations are the lines of M- mean curvature, along which the normal curvature of the immersion is given by a function M = M(k_1,k_2) in [k_1, k_2], called a M- mean curvature, whose properties extend and unify those of the arithmetic H=(k_1+k_2)/2, the geometric K^{1/2} and harmonic K/H=((1/{k_1} + 1/{k_2})/2)^{-1} classical mean curvatures. The singularities of the foliations are the umbilic points and parabolic curves, where k_1 = k_2 and K = 0, respectively. Here are determined the patterns of M- mean curvature lines near the umbilic points, parabolic curves and M- mean curvature cycles (the periodic leaves of the foliations), which are structurally stable under small perturbations of the immersion. The genericity of these patterns is also established. These patterns provide the three essential local ingredients to establish sufficient conditions, likely to be also necessary, for M-Mean Curvature Structural Stability of immersed surfaces. This constitutes a natural unification and complement for the results obtained previously by the authors for the Arithmetic, Asymptotic, Geometric and Harmonic, classical cases of Mean Curvature Structural Stability.

Bifurcations of Umbilic Points and Related Principal Cycles

The simplest patterns of qualitative changes on the configurations of lines of principal curvature} around umbilic points on surfaces whose immersions into $\mathbb R^3$ depend smoothly on a real parameter (codimension one umbilic bifurcations) are described in this paper. Global effects, due to umbilic bifurcations, on these configurations such as the appearance and annihilation of periodic principal lines, called also principal cycles, are also studied here.

A metric property of umbilic points

In the space $\mathbb U^4$ of cubic forms of surfaces, regarded as a $G$-space and endowed with a natural invariant metric, the ratio of the volumes of those representing umbilic points with negative to those with positive indexes is evaluated in terms of the asymmetry of the metric, defined here. A connection of this ratio with that reported by Berry and Hannay (1977) in the domain of Statistical Physics, is discussed.

Harmonic Mean Curvature Lines on Surfaces Immersed in R3

Consider oriented surfaces immersed in $\mathbb R^3.$ Associated to them, here are studied pairs of transversal foliations with singularities, defined on the Elliptic region, where the Gaussian curvature $\mathcal K$, given by the product of the principal curvatures $k_1, k_2$ is positive. The leaves of the foliations are the lines of harmonic mean curvature, also called characteristic or diagonal lines, along which the normal curvature of the immersion is given by ${\mathcal K}/{\mathcal H}$, where $ {\mathcal H}=({k_1}+k_2)/2$ is the arithmetic mean curvature. That is, ${\mathcal K}/{\mathcal H}=((1/{k_1} + 1/{k_2})/2)^{-1}$ is the harmonic mean of the principal curvatures $k_1, k_2$ of the immersion. The singularities of the foliations are the umbilic points and parabolic curves, where $k_1 = k_2$ and ${\mathcal K} = 0$, respectively. Here are determined the structurally stable patterns of harmonic mean curvature lines near the umbilic points, parabolic curves and harmonic mean curvature cycles, the periodic leaves of the foliations. The genericity of these patterns is established. This provides the three essential local ingredients to establish sufficient conditions, likely to be also necessary, for Harmonic Mean Curvature Structural Stability of immersed surfaces. This study, outlined towards the end of the paper, is a natural analog and complement for that carried out previously by the authors for the Arithmetic Mean Curvature and the Asymptotic Structural Stability of immersed surfaces.

Geometric Mean Curvature Lines on Surfaces Immersed in R3

Here are studied pairs of transversal foliations with singularities, defined on the Elliptic region (where the Gaussian curvature $\mathcal K$ is positive) of an oriented surface immersed in $\mathbb R^3$. The leaves of the foliations are the lines of geometric mean curvature, along which the normal curvature is given by $\sqrt {\mathcal K}$, which is the geometric mean curvature of the principal curvatures $ k_1, k_2$ of the immersion. The singularities of the foliations are the umbilic points and parabolic curves}, where $ k_1 = k_2$ and ${\mathcal K} = 0$, respectively. Here are determined the structurally stable patterns of geometric mean curvature lines near the umbilic points, parabolic curves and geometric mean curvature cycles, the periodic leaves of the foliations. The genericity of these patterns is established. This provides the three essential local ingredients to establish sufficient conditions, likely to be also necessary, for Geometric Mean Curvature Structural Stability. This study, outlined at the end of the paper, is a natural analog and complement for the Arithmetic Mean Curvature and Asymptotic Structural Stability of immersed surfaces studied previously by the authors.
