Square Patterns and Quasi-patterns in Weakly Damped Faraday Waves

Pattern formation in parametric surface waves is studied in the limit of weak viscous dissipation. A set of quasi-potential equations (QPEs) is introduced that admits a closed representation in terms of surface variables alone. A multiscale expansion of the QPEs reveals the importance of triad resonant interactions, and the saturating effect of the driving force leading to a gradient amplitude equation. Minimization of the associated Lyapunov function yields standing wave patterns of square symmetry for capillary waves, and hexagonal patterns and a sequence of quasi-patterns for mixed capillary-gravity waves. Numerical integration of the QPEs reveals a quasi-pattern of eight-fold symmetry in the range of parameters predicted by the multiscale expansion.

Coarse-grained description of thermo-capillary flow

A mesoscopic or coarse-grained approach is presented to study thermo-capillary induced flows. An order parameter representation of a two-phase binary fluid is used in which the interfacial region separating the phases naturally occupies a transition zone of small width. The order parameter satisfies the Cahn-Hilliard equation with advective transport. A modified Navier-Stokes equation that incorporates an explicit coupling to the order parameter field governs fluid flow. It reduces, in the limit of an infinitely thin interface, to the Navier-Stokes equation within the bulk phases and to two interfacial forces: a normal capillary force proportional to the surface tension and the mean curvature of the surface, and a tangential force proportional to the tangential derivative of the surface tension. The method is illustrated in two cases: thermo-capillary migration of drops and phase separation via spinodal decomposition, both in an externally imposed temperature gradient.

Two-phase binary fluids and immiscible fluids described by an order parameter

A unified framework for coupled Navier-Stokes/Cahn-Hilliard equations is developed using, as a basis, a balance law for microforces in conjunction with constitutive equations consistent with a mechanical version of the second law. As a numerical application of the theory, we consider the kinetics of coarsening for a binary fluid in two space-dimensions.

Secondary Instabilities and Spatiotemporal Chaos in Parametric Surface Waves

A two dimensional model is introduced to study pattern formation, secondary instabilities and the transition to spatiotemporal chaos (weak turbulence) in parametric surface waves. The stability of a periodic standing wave state above onset is studied against Eckhaus, zig-zag and transverse amplitude modulations (TAM) as a function of the control parameter $\varepsilon$ and the detuning. A mechanism leading to a finite threshold for the TAM instability is identified. Numerical solutions of the model are in agreement with the stability diagram, and also reveal the existence of a transition to spatiotemporal chaotic states at a finite $\varepsilon$. Power spectra of temporal fluctuations in the chaotic state are broadband, decaying as a power law of the frequency $ω^{-z}$ with $z \approx 4.0$.

Spiral defect chaos in a model of Rayleigh-Benard convection

A numerical solution of a generalized Swift-Hohenberg equation in two dimensions reveals the existence of a spatio-temporal chaotic state comprised of a large number of rotating spirals. This state is observed for a reduced Rayleigh number $ε=0.25$. The power spectrum of the state is isotropic, and the spatial correlation function decays exponentially, with an estimated decay length $ξ\approx 2.5 λ_{c}$, where $λ_{c}$ is the critical wavelength near the onset of convection. Our study suggests that this spiral defect state occurs for low Prandtl numbers and large aspect ratios.

Pattern formation during Rayleigh-Bénard convection in non-Boussinesq fluids

Motivated by recent experimental studies of Bodenschatz et al. [E. Bodenschatz, J.R. de Bruyn, G. Ahlers and D.S. Cannell, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 67}, 3078 (1991) ], we present a numerical study of a generalized two dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation to model pattern formation in Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a non-Boussinesq fluid. It is shown that many of the features observed in these experiments can be reproduced by this generalized model that explicitly includes non-Boussinesq and mean flow effects. The spontaneous formation of hexagons, rolls, and a rotating spiral pattern is studied, as well as the transitions and competition among them. Mean flow, non-Boussinesq effects, the geometric shape of the lateral wall, and sidewall forcing are all shown to be crucial in the formation of the rotating spirals. We also study nucleation and growth of hexagonal patterns and find that the front velocity in this two dimensional model is consistent with the prediction of marginal stability theory for one dimensional fronts.

Fluctuations and Pattern Selection Near an Eckhaus Instability

We study the effect of fluctuations in the vicinity of an Eckhaus instability. The classical stability limit, which is defined in the absence of fluctuations, is smeared out into a region in which fluctuations and nonlinearities dominate the decay of unstable states. The width of this region is shown to grow as $ D^{1/2} $, where $D$ is the intensity of the fluctuations. We find an effective stability boundary that depends on $D$. A numerical solution of the stochastic Swift-Hohenberg equation in one dimension is used to test this prediction and to study pattern selection when the initial unstable state lies within the fluctuation dominated region. The asymptotically selected state differs from the predictions of previous analyses. Finally, the nonlinear relaxation for $D > 0$ is shown to exhibit a scaling form.

Narrow band noise as a model of time-dependent accelerations: study of the stability of a fluid surface in a microgravity environment

We introduce a stochastic model to analyze in quantitative detail the effect of the high frequency components of the residual accelerations onboard spacecraft (often called g-jitter) on fluid motion. The residual acceleration field is modeled as a narrow band noise characterized by three independent parameters: its intensity $G^{2}$, a dominant frequency $Ω$, and a characteristic spectral width $τ^{-1}$. The white noise limit corresponds to $Ωτ\rightarrow 0$, with $G^{2} τ$ finite, and the limit of a periodic g-jitter (or deterministic limit) can be recovered for $Ωτ\rightarrow \infty$, $G^{2}$ finite. The analysis of the response of a fluid surface subjected to a fluctuating gravitational field leads to the stochastic Mathieu equation driven by both additive and multiplicative noise. We discuss the stability of the solutions of this equation in the two limits of white noise and deterministic forcing, and in the general case of narrow band noise. The results are then applied to typical microgravity conditions.

Study of spiral pattern formation in Rayleigh-Benard convection

We present a numerical study of a generalized two-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg model of spiral pattern formation in Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a non-Boussinesq fluid. We demonstrate for the first time that a model for convective motion is able to predict in considerable dynamical detail the spontaneous formation of a rotating spiral state from an ordered hexagon state. Our results are in good agreement with recent experimental studies of $CO_{2}$ gas. The mean flow and non-Boussinesq effects are shown to be crucial in forming rotating spirals.

Numerical study of pattern formation following a convective instability in non-Boussinesq fluids

We present a numerical study of a model of pattern formation following a convective instability in a non-Boussinesq fluid. It is shown that many of the features observed in convection experiments conducted on $CO_{2}$ gas can be reproduced by using a generalized two-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation. The formation of hexagonal patterns, rolls and spirals is studied, as well as the transitions and competition among them. We also study nucleation and growth of hexagonal patterns and find that the front velocity in this two dimensional model is consistent with the prediction of marginal stability theory for one dimensional fronts.

New Dynamic Monte Carlo Renormalization Group Method

The dynamical critical exponent of the two-dimensional spin-flip Ising model is evaluated by a Monte Carlo renormalization group method involving a transformation in time. The results agree very well with a finite-size scaling analysis performed on the same data. The value of $z = 2.13 \pm 0.01$ is obtained, which is consistent with most recent estimates.
