Theoretical and phenomenological aspects of the Electroweak physics WG studies for the 2026 ESPPU Physics Briefing Book

The 2025-2026 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics placed renewed emphasis on quantitatively robust comparisons between future collider projects. Within this context, the Electroweak physics working group of the Physics Preparatory Group (PPG EW WG) carried out a comprehensive assessment of the projected sensitivities of different facilities to Higgs boson, electroweak and top-quark observables, with particular attention on different scenarios of theoretical uncertainties. These studies are summarized in the Physics Briefing Book. The aim of this document is to (a) provide a more detailed account of the evaluation of theoretical uncertainties, which was undertaken within the PPG EW WG, and (b) document the collider-specific inputs used in the electroweak and Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) fits and discuss any needed modifications in order to harmonize assumptions between projects. In presenting the detailed theoretical uncertainty treatment and the explicit collider inputs and assumptions, this work aims to improve the reproducibility and future extensibility of the results presented in the Physics Briefing Book.

A detailed study on the prospects for a $\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$ threshold scan in $\mathrm{e^+e^-}$ collisions

A scan of the beam energy across the top quark pair ($\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$) production threshold is part of the program of future Higgs, top, and electroweak factory projects. In this paper, we provide projections for the achievable precision in the top quark mass ($m_\mathrm{t}$), width ($Γ_\mathrm{t}$), and Yukawa coupling ($y_\mathrm{t}$) at the electron-positron ($\mathrm{e^+e^-}$) stage of the Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee). The study includes a detailed assessment of parametric and systematic uncertainties, as well as a rigorous estimate of the effect of point-to-point correlations. We project that $m_\mathrm{t}$ and $Γ_\mathrm{t}$ can be determined with an experimental precision of about 6.8 and 11.5 MeV, respectively, when $m_\mathrm{t}$ is defined in the potential-subtracted (PS) scheme. The impact of theoretical uncertainties due to missing higher orders is found to be of about 35 (25) MeV on $m_\mathrm{t}$ ($Γ_\mathrm{t}$) at N$^3$LO in non-relativistic QCD. Therefore, improvements in the theoretical accuracy, which is an active area of development, are key to match the achievable experimental precision at a future $\mathrm{e^+e^-}$ collider. Finally, we explore the prospects for a measurement of $y_\mathrm{t}$ at FCC-ee via a dedicated run above the $\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$ production threshold.

Physics Briefing Book: Input for the 2026 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics

The European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) reflects the vision and presents concrete plans of the European particle physics community for advancing human knowledge in fundamental physics. The ESPP is updated every five-to-six years through a community-driven process. It commences with the submission of specific proposals and other input from the community at large, outlining projects envisioned for the near-, mid-, and long-term future. All submitted contributions are evaluated by the Physics Preparatory Group (PPG), and a preliminary analysis is presented at a Symposium meant to foster a broad community discussion on the scientific value and feasibility of the various ideas proposed. The outcomes of the analysis and the deliberations at the Symposium are synthesized in the current Briefing Book, which provides an important input in the deliberations of the Strategy recommendations by the European Strategy Group (ESG).

$\texttt{HEPfit}$: a Code for the Combination of Indirect and Direct Constraints on High Energy Physics Models

$\texttt{HEPfit}$ is a flexible open-source tool which, given the Standard Model or any of its extensions, allows to $\textit{i)}$ fit the model parameters to a given set of experimental observables; $\textit{ii)}$ obtain predictions for observables. $\texttt{HEPfit}$ can be used either in Monte Carlo mode, to perform a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis of a given model, or as a library, to obtain predictions of observables for a given point in the parameter space of the model, allowing $\texttt{HEPfit}$ to be used in any statistical framework. In the present version, around a thousand observables have been implemented in the Standard Model and in several new physics scenarios. In this paper, we describe the general structure of the code as well as models and observables implemented in the current release.

Electroweak precision observables and Higgs-boson signal strengths in the Standard Model and beyond: present and future

We present results from a state-of-the-art fit of electroweak precision observables and Higgs-boson signal-strength measurements performed using 7 and 8 TeV data from the Large Hadron Collider. Based on the HEPfit package, our study updates the traditional fit of electroweak precision observables and extends it to include Higgs-boson measurements. As a result we obtain constraints on new physics corrections to both electroweak observables and Higgs-boson couplings. We present the projected accuracy of the fit taking into account the expected sensitivities at future colliders.

MuCol Milestone Report No. 5: Preliminary Parameters

This document is comprised of a collection of updated preliminary parameters for the key parts of the muon collider. The updated preliminary parameters follow on from the October 2023 Tentative Parameters Report. Particular attention has been given to regions of the facility that are believed to hold greater technical uncertainty in their design and that have a strong impact on the cost and power consumption of the facility. The data is collected from a collaborative spreadsheet and transferred to overleaf.

Global SMEFT Fits at Future Colliders

Based on the framework of Standard Model Effective Field Theory, we performed a few global fits, each containing a subset of dimension-6 operators, for the measurements that are expected at future colliders. The fit for the Higgs and electroweak sector improves what has been done for the European Strategy Update in 2020 on both EFT treatments and experimental inputs. A new comprehensive fit is performed focusing on 4-fermion interactions at future colliders. Top-quark sector is studied in a dedicated fit which restricts the operators and measurements to be directly related to top-quark. A small subset of CP-violating operators involving bosonic fields alone are also investigated. Various running scenarios for future e+e- and Muon Colliders that are suggested in the Snowmass 2021 discussion are considered in the global fits. The outcomes from each fit are expressed in terms of either direct constraint on Wilson Coefficients or precision on Higgs and electroweak effective couplings.

Computing Tools for Effective Field Theories

In recent years, theoretical and phenomenological studies with effective field theories have become a trending and prolific line of research in the field of high-energy physics. In order to discuss present and future prospects concerning automated tools in this field, the SMEFT-Tools 2022 workshop was held at the University of Zurich from 14th-16th September 2022. The current document collects and summarizes the content of this workshop.

Towards a Muon Collider

A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future work.

Report of the Topical Group on Electroweak Precision Physics and Constraining New Physics for Snowmass 2021

The precise measurement of physics observables and the test of their consistency within the standard model (SM) are an invaluable approach, complemented by direct searches for new particles, to determine the existence of physics beyond the standard model (BSM). Studies of massive electroweak gauge bosons (W and Z bosons) are a promising target for indirect BSM searches, since the interactions of photons and gluons are strongly constrained by the unbroken gauge symmetries. They can be divided into two categories: (a) Fermion scattering processes mediated by s- or t-channel W/Z bosons, also known as electroweak precision measurements; and (b) multi-boson processes, which include production of two or more vector bosons in fermion-antifermion annihilation, as well as vector boson scattering (VBS) processes. The latter categories can test modifications of gauge-boson self-interactions, and the sensitivity is typically improved with increased collision energy. This report evaluates the achievable precision of a range of future experiments, which depend on the statistics of the collected data sample, the experimental and theoretical systematic uncertainties, and their correlations. In addition it presents a combined interpretation of these results, together with similar studies in the Higgs and top sector, in the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) framework. This framework provides a model-independent prescription to put generic constraints on new physics and to study and combine large sets of experimental observables, assuming that the new physics scales are significantly higher than the EW scale.

Truncation, validity, uncertainties

The truncation of the standard-model effective field theory, its validity and the associated uncertainties have been discussed in meetings of the LHC EFT WG. Proposals were made by participants to address these issues. No consensus was reached and no formal recommendation is therefore put forward at this time. None of the proposals has been approved or validated and further work is needed to establish a prescription. This note aims at summarizing the proposals and points of debate.

Off-shell Higgs Interpretations Task Force: Models and Effective Field Theories Subgroup Report

This report presents the results of the Models and Effective Field Theories Subgroup of the Off-Shell Interpretations Task Force in the LHC Higgs Working Group. The main goal of the subgroup was to discuss and advance the potential impact of off-shell Higgs measurements on searches for BSM physics carried out in the EFT framework or as benchmark model studies. In the first contribution, the off-shell potential to resolve flat directions in parameter space for on-shell measurements is studied. Furthermore, the sensitivity of off-shell measurements to SMEFT dimension-6 operators for the gg $\to$ ZZ process is discussed, and studies of explicit models that are testable in off-shell production are reviewed. In the second contribution, the SMEFT effects in the off-shell gluon fusion and electroweak processes are discussed. Subsequently, the computation of integrated and differential effects using SMEFT@NLO and MG5_aMC@NLO, or JHUGen and MCFM, is demonstrated. On that basis, a study of the prospects of obtaining additional SMEFT constraints - beyond those from existing global fits - by utilising the off-shell process is presented. For clarification, a revised introduction, definition and discussion of the Higgs basis parametrisation of the SMEFT is given in the third contribution. In short notes on the SMEFT, the Higgs basis with an additional constraint is discussed and relations between the Higgs and Warsaw bases are presented. Lastly, an overview of EFT calculations and tools is given.

Simple and statistically sound recommendations for analysing physical theories

Physical theories that depend on many parameters or are tested against data from many different experiments pose unique challenges to statistical inference. Many models in particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology fall into one or both of these categories. These issues are often sidestepped with statistically unsound ad hoc methods, involving intersection of parameter intervals estimated by multiple experiments, and random or grid sampling of model parameters. Whilst these methods are easy to apply, they exhibit pathologies even in low-dimensional parameter spaces, and quickly become problematic to use and interpret in higher dimensions. In this article we give clear guidance for going beyond these procedures, suggesting where possible simple methods for performing statistically sound inference, and recommendations of readily-available software tools and standards that can assist in doing so. Our aim is to provide any physicists lacking comprehensive statistical training with recommendations for reaching correct scientific conclusions, with only a modest increase in analysis burden. Our examples can be reproduced with the code publicly available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4322283.

Higgs Precision at a 125 GeV Muon Collider

The $s$-channel resonant production of the Higgs boson at a 125 GeV muon collider enables a unique way to determine the Higgs properties. However, a clear picture of the achievable Higgs precision has not yet been established. We perform a phenomenological study of the Higgs measurements at such resonant muon collider Higgs factory and present a systematic, detailed, and consistent extraction of Higgs precision measurements. Many new aspects about the lineshape scan, including the scaling with luminosity, optimal scan range, minimal scan steps, correlations with exclusive measurement, effective cross-section modeling, etc., are quantitatively studied in this work. All major exclusive Higgs channels are simulated and analyzed with Standard Model background, detection efficiencies, acceptance, angular distributions, and cross-channel correlations. Global analyses of the Higgs couplings are performed in the $κ$ framework and the effective-field-theory one. The results suggest that the 125 GeV muon-collider Higgs factory provides significant improvement to the Higgs coupling reach of the HL-LHC and provides independent and distinct Higgs precision information concerning future $e^+e^-$ colliders. We report results for both $5~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ and $20~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ integrated luminosity. These results provide comprehensive and quantitative physics understandings helpful in planning for the muon collider roadmap and global high-energy physics programs.

Higgs probes of top quark contact interactions and their interplay with the Higgs self-coupling

We calculate the dominant contributions of third generation four-quark operators to single-Higgs production and decay. They enter via loop corrections to Higgs decays into gluons, photons and $b\bar{b}$, and in Higgs production via gluon fusion and in association with top quark pairs. We show that these loop effects can, in some cases, lead to better constraints than those from fits to top quark data. Finally, we investigate whether these four-fermion operators can spoil the determination of the trilinear Higgs self-coupling from fits to single-Higgs data.
