The ABCD of topological recursion

Kontsevich and Soibelman reformulated and slightly generalised the topological recursion of math-ph/0702045, seeing it as a quantization of certain quadratic Lagrangians in $T^*V$ for some vector space $V$. KS topological recursion is a procedure which takes as initial data a quantum Airy structure -- a family of at most quadratic differential operators on $V$ satisfying some axioms -- and gives as outcome a formal series of functions in $V$ (the partition function) simultaneously annihilated by these operators. Finding and classifying quantum Airy structures modulo gauge group action, is by itself an interesting problem which we study here. We provide some elementary, Lie-algebraic tools to address this problem, and give some elements of classification for ${\rm dim}\,V = 2$. We also describe four more interesting classes of quantum Airy structures, coming from respectively Frobenius algebras (here we retrieve the 2d TQFT partition function as a special case), non-commutative Frobenius algebras, loop spaces of Frobenius algebras and a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-invariant version of the latter. This $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-invariant version in the case of a semi-simple Frobenius algebra corresponds to the topological recursion of math-ph/0702045.

Finite type invariants and fatgraphs

We define an invariant $\nabla_G(M)$ of pairs M,G, where M is a 3-manifold obtained by surgery on some framed link in the cylinder $S\times I$, S is a connected surface with at least one boundary component, and G is a fatgraph spine of S. In effect, $\nabla_G$ is the composition with the $ι_n$ maps of Le-Murakami-Ohtsuki of the link invariant of Andersen-Mattes-Reshetikhin computed relative to choices determined by the fatgraph G; this provides a basic connection between 2d geometry and 3d quantum topology. For each fixed G, this invariant is shown to be universal for homology cylinders, i.e., $\nabla_G$ establishes an isomorphism from an appropriate vector space $\bar{H}$ of homology cylinders to a certain algebra of Jacobi diagrams. Via composition $\nabla_{G'}\circ\nabla_G^{-1}$ for any pair of fatgraph spines G,G' of S, we derive a representation of the Ptolemy groupoid, i.e., the combinatorial model for the fundamental path groupoid of Teichmuller space, as a group of automorphisms of this algebra. The space $\bar{H}$ comes equipped with a geometrically natural product induced by stacking cylinders on top of one another and furthermore supports related operations which arise by gluing a homology handlebody to one end of a cylinder or to another homology handlebody. We compute how $\nabla_G$ interacts with all three operations explicitly in terms of natural products on Jacobi diagrams and certain diagrammatic constants. Our main result gives an explicit extension of the LMO invariant of 3-manifolds to the Ptolemy groupoid in terms of these operations, and this groupoid extension nearly fits the paradigm of a TQFT. We finally re-derive the Morita-Penner cocycle representing the first Johnson homomorphism using a variant/generalization of $\nabla_G$.

Groupoid Extensions of Mapping Class Representations for Bordered Surfaces

The mapping class group of a surface with one boundary component admits numerous interesting representations including as a group of automorphisms of a free group and as a group of symplectic transformations. Insofar as the mapping class group can be identified with the fundamental group of Riemann's moduli space, it is furthermore identified with a subgroup of the fundamental path groupoid upon choosing a basepoint. A combinatorial model for this, the mapping class groupoid, arises from the invariant cell decomposition of Teichmüller space, whose fundamental path groupoid is called the Ptolemy groupoid. It is natural to try to extend representations of the mapping class group to the mapping class groupoid, i.e., construct a homomorphism from the mapping class groupoid to the same target that extends the given representations arising from various choices of basepoint. Among others, we extend both aforementioned representations to the groupoid level in this sense, where the symplectic representation is lifted both rationally and integrally. The techniques of proof include several algorithms involving fatgraphs and chord diagrams. The former extension is given by explicit formulae depending upon six essential cases, and the kernel and image of the groupoid representation are computed. Furthermore, this provides groupoid extensions of any representation of the mapping class group that factors through its action on the fundamental group of the surface including, for instance, the Magnus representation and representations on the moduli spaces of flat connections.

Hitchin's connection, Toeplitz operators and symmetry invariant deformation quantization

We establish that Hitchin's connection exist for any rigid holomorphic family of Kahler structures on any compact pre-quantizable symplectic manifold which satisfies certain simple topological constraints. Using Toeplitz operators we prove that Hitchin's connection induces a unique formal connection on smooth functions on the symplectic manifold. Parallel transport of this formal connection produces equivalences between the corresponding Berezin-Toeplitz deformation quantizations. - In the cases where the Hitchin connection is projectively flat, the formal connections will be flat and we get a symmetry-invariant formal quantization. If a certain cohomological condition is satisfied a global trivialization of this algebra bundle is constructed. As a corollary we get a symmetry-invariant deformation quantization. Finally, these results are applied to the moduli space situation in which Hitchin's originally constructed his connection. First we get a proof that the Hitchin connection in this case is the same as the connection constructed by Axelrod, Della Pietra and Witten. Second we obtain in this way a mapping class group invariant formal quantization of the smooth symplectic leaves of the moduli space of flat SU(n)-connections on any compact surface.

Quantum Hilbert matrices and orthogonal polynomials

Using the notion of quantum integers associated with a complex number $q\neq 0$, we define the quantum Hilbert matrix and various extensions. They are Hankel matrices corresponding to certain little $q$-Jacobi polynomials when $|q|<1$, and for the special value $q=(1-\sqrt{5})/(1+\sqrt{5})$ they are closely related to Hankel matrices of reciprocal Fibonacci numbers called Filbert matrices. We find a formula for the entries of the inverse quantum Hilbert matrix.

Abelian Conformal Field theories and Determinant Bundles

The present paper is the first in a series of papers, in which we shall construct modular functors and Topological Quantum Field Theories from the conformal field theory developed in [TUY]. The basic idea is that the covariant constant sections of the sheaf of vacua associated to a simple Lie algebra over Teichmüller space of an oriented pointed surface gives the vectorspace the modular functor associates to the oriented pointed surface. However the connection on the sheaf of vacua is only projectively flat, so we need to find a suitable line bundle with a connection, such that the tensor product of the two has a flat connection. We shall construct a line bundle with a connection on any family of pointed curves with formal coordinates. By computing the curvature of this line bundle, we conclude that we actually need a fractional power of this line bundle so as to obtain a flat connection after tensoring. In order to functorially extract this fractional power, we need to construct a preferred section of the line bundle. We shall construct the line bundle by the use of the so-called $bc$-ghost systems (Faddeev-Popov ghosts) first introduced in covariant quantization [FP]. We follow the ideas of [KNTY], but decribe it from the point of view of [TUY].

Geometric construction of modular functors from Conformal Field Theory

This is the second paper in a series of papers aimed at providing a geometric construction of modular functors and topological quantum field theories from conformal field theory building on the constructions in [TUY] and [KNTY]. We give a geometric construct of a modular functor for any simple Lie-algebra and any level by twisting the constructions in [TUY] by a certain fractional power of the abelian theory first considered in [KNTY] and further studied in our first paper [AU1].

Modular functors are determined by their genus zero data

We prove in this paper that the genus zero data of a modular functor determines the modular functor. We do this by establishing that the S-matrix in genus one with one point labeled arbitrarily can be expressed in terms of the genus zero information and we give an explicit formula. We do not assume the modular functor in question has duality or is unitary, in order to establish this.

Topological Quantum Field Theory and the Nielsen-Thurston classification of M(0,4)

We show that the Nielsen-Thurston classification of mapping classes of the sphere with four marked points is determined by the quantum SU(n)-representations, for any fixed integer $n \geq 2$. In the Pseudo-Anosov case we also show that the stretching factor is a limit of eigenvalues of (non-unitary) SU(2)-TQFT representation matrices. It follows that at big enough levels, Pseudo-Anosov mapping classes are represented by matrices of infinite order.

Asymptotics of the Hilbert-Smith norm of curve operators in TQFT

Applying standard techniques from Toeplitz operator theory, we analyze the asymptotics of the Hilbert-Smith norms of the TQFT operators coming from isotopy classes of one dimensional oriented submanifolds on a closed oriented surface. We thereby obtain a Toeplitz operator interpretation and generalization of the asymptotic formula obtained recently by Marche and Narimannejad.

The Nielsen-Thurston classification of mapping classes is determined by TQFT

For each fixed n>=2 we show how the Nielsen-Thurston classification of mapping classes for a closed surface of genus g>=2 is determined by the sequence of quantum SU(n) representations, when one considers all levels. That this is the case is a consequence of our asymptotic faithfulness property. We here provide explicit conditions on the image under these representations, which determines the Nielsen-Thurston type of any mapping class.

Asymptotics of the quantum invariants for surgeries on the figure 8 knot

We investigate the Reshetikhin--Turaev invariants associated to SU(2) for the 3-manifolds M obtained by doing any rational surgery along the figure 8 knot. In particular, we express these invariants in terms of certain complex double contour integrals. These integral formulae allow us to propose a formula for the leading asymptotics of the invariants in the limit of large quantum level. We analyze this expression using the saddle point method. We construct a certain surjection from the set of stationary points for the relevant phase functions onto the space of conjugacy classes of nonabelian SL(2,C)-representations of the fundamental group of M and prove that the values of these phase functions at the relevant stationary points equal the classical Chern--Simons invariants of the corresponding flat SU(2)-connections. Our findings are in agreement with the asymptotic expansion conjecture. Moreover, we calculate the leading asymptotics of the colored Jones polynomial of the figure 8 knot following R. Kashaev. This leads to a slightly finer asymptotic description of the invariant than predicted by the volume conjecture of Kashaev and H. Murakami and J. Murakami.

Asymptotic faithfulness of the quantum SU(n) representations of the mapping class groups

We prove that the sequence of projective representations of the mapping class group obtained from the projective flat connection in the SU(n)-Verlinde bundles over Teichmuller space is asymptotically faithful, that is the intersection over all levels of the kernels of these representations is trivial, whenever the genus of the underlying surface is at least 3. For the genus 2 case, this intersection is exactly the order two subgroup, generated by the hyper-elliptic involution, in the case of even degree and $n=2$. Otherwise the intersection is also trivial in the genus 2 case.

Automorphism fixed points in the moduli space of semistable bundles

Given an automorphism of a smooth complex algebraic curve, there is an induced action on the moduli space of semi-stable rank 2 holomorphic bundles with fixed determinant. We give a complete description of the fixed variety in terms of moduli spaces of parabolic bundles on the quotient curve.

Involutions on Moduli Spaces and Refinements of the Verlinde Formula

The moduli space $M$ of semi-stable rank 2 bundles with trivial determinant over a complex curve carries involutions naturally associated to 2-torsion points on the Jacobian of the curve. For every lift of a 2-torsion point to a 4-torsion point, we define a lift of the involution to the determinant line bundle $Ł$. We obtain an explicit presentation of the group generated by these lifts in terms of the order 4 Weil pairing. This is related to the triple intersections of the components of the fixed point sets in $M$, which we also determine completely using the order 4 Weil pairing. The lifted involutions act on the spaces of holomorphic sections of powers of $Ł$, whose dimensions are given by the Verlinde formula. We compute the characters of these vector spaces as representations of the group generated by our lifts, and we obtain an explicit isomorphism (as group representations) with the combinatorial-topological TQFT-vector spaces of [BHMV]. As an application, we describe a `brick decomposition', with explicit dimension formulas, of the Verlinde vector spaces. We also obtain similar results in the twisted (i.e., degree one) case.
