A blueprint for the formalization of norm-variation of multiple ergodic averages for commuting transformations

This blueprint serves as a companion to a forthcoming, shorter traditional mathematical paper. The purpose of this blueprint is two-fold: first, it has served as the foundation for a formalization in Lean 4 of these results. This formalization has been completed largely automatically, making essential use of current frontier large language models. Second, it will serve as a resource to readers of the main paper who are interested in further technical details of the proofs. The main result concerns norm-variation estimates for multiple ergodic averages associated with $n\ge 2$ commuting measure preserving transformations, providing a quantitative strengthening of Tao's norm-convergence theorem and answering an open question of Avigad and Rute. At the core of the analysis lies an explicit real-variable estimate for twisted multilinear averages that is closely related to certain singular Brascamp--Lieb inequalities.

Sharp isoperimetric inequalities on the Hamming cube II: The critical exponent

A sharp isoperimetric inequality for the Hamming cube is proved at the critical exponent $\beta=\frac12$. This follows up on previous work, where such bounds were established for $\beta$ near $\frac12$. As a consequence, this result settles a conjecture of Kahn and Park on cube partitions and yields a sharp $L^1$ Poincar\'e inequality for Boolean-valued functions. It also confirms a low-noise limit for balanced functions predicted by the Hellinger conjecture on noisy Boolean channels in information theory.

Power weight inequalities for spherical maximal functions

This paper is about spherical maximal functions with general dilation sets acting on functions in weighted $L^p(|x|^\alpha)$ spaces. Aside from endpoint cases, a complete description of the allowable ranges of $p$, $\alpha$ is given in terms of the Legendre--Assouad function of the dilation set. This settles, up to endpoints, an open problem of Duoandikoetxea and Seijo.

A fractal local smoothing problem for the wave equation

For any given set $E\subset [1,2]$, we discuss a fractal frequency-localized version of the $L^p$ local smoothing estimates for the half-wave propagator with times in $E$. A conjecture is formulated in terms of a quantity involving the Assouad spectrum of $E$ and the Legendre transform. We validate the conjecture for radial functions. We also prove a similar result for fractal-time $L^2\to L^q$ and square function bounds, for arbitrary $L^2$ functions and general time sets. We formulate a conjecture for $L^p\to L^q$ generalizations.

Spherical maximal operators with fractal sets of dilations on radial functions

For a given set of dilations $E\subset [1,2]$, Lebesgue space mapping properties of the spherical maximal operator with dilations restricted to $E$ are studied when acting on radial functions. In higher dimensions, the type set only depends on the upper Minkowski dimension of $E$, and in this case complete endpoint results are obtained. In two dimensions we determine the closure of the $L^p\to L^q$ type set for every given set $E$ in terms of a dimensional spectrum closely related to the upper Assouad spectrum of $E$.

Inner-outer factorization of analytic matrix-valued functions

This is a study of inner-outer factorization for analytic matrix-valued functions focusing on representations of the factors in terms of multiplicative integrals. Included is a brief introduction to the theory of multiplicative integrals and an exposition of V. P. Potapov's representation theorem for contractive matrix-valued functions in terms of Blaschke-Potapov factors and multiplicative integrals.

Sharp isoperimetric inequalities on the Hamming cube near the critical exponent

An isoperimetric inequality on the Hamming cube for exponents $\beta\ge 0.50057$ is proved, achieving equality on any subcube. This was previously known for $\beta\ge \log_2(3/2)\approx 0.585$. Improved bounds are also obtained at the critical exponent $\beta=0.5$, including a bound that is asymptotically sharp for small subsets. A key ingredient is a new Bellman-type function involving the Gaussian isoperimetric profile which appears to be a good approximation of the true envelope function. Verification uses computer-assisted proofs and interval arithmetic. Applications include progress towards a conjecture of Kahn and Park as well as sharp Poincar\'e inequalities for Boolean-valued functions near $L^1$.

A blueprint for the formalization of Carleson's theorem on convergence of Fourier series

This paper is the blueprint underlying the Lean formalization of the proof of Carleson's classical result asserting almost everywhere convergence of Fourier series of continuous functions. We break up the proof into two steps, a reduction of the classical result to a new theorem that appears in a sibling communication and a proof of this new theorem, which is also detailed as blueprint in this paper. An early version of this blueprint was used to initiate the Lean formalization. During the formalization, many contributors elaborated the blueprint with minor corrections, modifications and extensions. The final version is presented here as a guide through the accompanying Lean code.

Bochner-Riesz means at the critical index: Weighted and sparse bounds

We consider Bochner-Riesz means on weighted $L^p$ spaces, at the critical index $\lambda(p)=d(\frac 1p-\frac 12)-\frac 12$. For every $A_1$-weight we obtain an extension of Vargas' weak type $(1,1)$ inequality in some range of $p>1$. To prove this result we establish new endpoint results for sparse domination. These are almost optimal in dimension $d=2$; partial results as well as conditional results are proved in higher dimensions. For the means of index $\lambda_*=\frac{d-1}{2d+2}$ we prove fully optimal sparse bounds.

Spherical maximal functions and fractal dimensions of dilation sets

For the spherical mean operators $\mathcal{A}_t$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\ge 2$, we consider the maximal functions $M_Ef =\sup_{t\in E} |\mathcal{A}_t f|$, with dilation sets $E\subset [1,2]$. In this paper we give a surprising characterization of the closed convex sets which can occur as closure of the sharp $L^p$ improving region of $M_E$ for some $E$. This region depends on the Minkowski dimension of $E$, but also other properties of the fractal geometry such as the Assouad spectrum of $E$ and subsets of $E$. A key ingredient is an essentially sharp result on $M_E$ for a class of sets called (quasi-)Assouad regular which is new in two dimensions.

Endpoint sparse domination for classes of multiplier transformations

We prove endpoint results for sparse domination of translation invariant multiscale operators. The results are formulated in terms of dilation invariant classes of Fourier multipliers based on natural localized $M^{p\to q}$ norms which express appropriate endpoint regularity hypotheses. The applications include new and optimal sparse bounds for classical oscillatory multipliers and multi-scale versions of radial bump multipliers.

A new type of superorthogonality

We provide a simple criterion on a family of functions that implies a square function estimate on $L^p$ for every even integer $p \geq 2$. This defines a new type of superorthogonality that is verified by checking a less restrictive criterion than any other type of superorthogonality that is currently known.

On the strict majorant property in arbitrary dimensions

In this work we study $d$-dimensional majorant properties. We prove that a set of frequencies in ${\mathbb Z}^d$ satisfies the strict majorant property on $L^p([0,1]^d)$ for all $p> 0$ if and only if the set is affinely independent. We further construct three types of violations of the strict majorant property. Any set of at least $d+2$ frequencies in ${\mathbb Z}^d$ violates the strict majorant property on $L^p([0,1]^d)$ for an open interval of $p \not\in 2 {\mathbb N}$ of length 2. Any infinite set of frequencies in ${\mathbb Z}^d$ violates the strict majorant property on $L^p([0,1]^d)$ for an infinite sequence of open intervals of $p \not\in 2 {\mathbb N}$ of length $2$. Finally, given any $p>0$ with $p \not\in 2{\mathbb N}$, we exhibit a set of $d+2$ frequencies on the moment curve in ${\mathbb R}^d$ that violate the strict majorant property on $L^p([0,1]^d).$

A new proof of an inequality of Bourgain

The purpose of this short note is to demonstrate how some techniques from additive combinatorics recently developed by Peluse and Peluse-Prendiville can be applied to give an alternative proof for a trilinear smoothing inequality originally due to Bourgain.

Spherical maximal operators on Heisenberg groups: Restricted dilation sets

Consider spherical means on the Heisenberg group with a codimension two incidence relation, and associated spherical local maximal functions $M_Ef$ where the dilations are restricted to a set $E$. We prove $L^p\to L^q$ estimates for these maximal operators; the results depend on various notions of dimension of $E$.

Decoupling for two quadratic forms in three variables: a complete characterization

We prove sharp decoupling inequalities for all degenerate surfaces of codimension two in $\mathbb{R}^5$ given by two quadratic forms in three variables. Together with previous work by Demeter, Guo, and Shi in the non-degenerate case (arXiv:1609.04107), this provides a classification of decoupling inequalities for pairs of quadratic forms in three variables.
