Constraint rescaling in refined algebraic quantisation: momentum constraint

We investigate refined algebraic quantisation within a family of classically equivalent constrained Hamiltonian systems that are related to each other by rescaling a momentum-type constraint. The quantum constraint is implemented by a rigging map that is motivated by group averaging but has a resolution finer than what can be peeled off from the formally divergent contributions to the averaging integral. Three cases emerge, depending on the asymptotics of the rescaling function: (i) quantisation is equivalent to that with identity scaling; (ii) quantisation fails, owing to nonexistence of self-adjoint extensions of the constraint operator; (iii) a quantisation ambiguity arises from the self-adjoint extension of the constraint operator, and the resolution of this purely quantum mechanical ambiguity determines the superselection structure of the physical Hilbert space. Prospects of generalising the analysis to systems with several constraints are discussed.

Colliding branes and big crunches

We examine the global structure of colliding domain walls in AdS spacetime and come to the conclusion that singularities forming from such collisions are of the big-crunch type rather than that of a black brane.

Quantum accelerometer: distinguishing inertial Bob from his accelerated twin Rob by a local measurement

Single quantum system, such as Unruh-DeWitt detector, can be used to determine absolute acceleration by local measurements on a quantum field. To show this, we consider two kinematically indistinguishable scenarios: an inertial observer, Bob, measuring the field of an uniformly accelerated cavity, and his non-inertial twin Rob accelerating and making measurements in a stationary cavity. We find that these scenarios can be distinguished in the non-relativistic regime only by measurements on highly excited massive fields, allowing one to detect non-inertialness of the reference frame.

Topological geon black holes in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory

We construct topological geon quotients of two families of Einstein-Yang-Mills black holes. For Kuenzle's static, spherically symmetric SU(n) black holes with n>2, a geon quotient exists but generically requires promoting charge conjugation into a gauge symmetry. For Kleihaus and Kunz's static, axially symmetric SU(2) black holes a geon quotient exists without gauging charge conjugation, and the parity of the gauge field winding number determines whether the geon gauge bundle is trivial. The geon's gauge bundle structure is expected to have an imprint in the Hawking-Unruh effect for quantum fields that couple to the background gauge field.

Quantum dynamics of the Einstein-Rosen wormhole throat

We consider the polymer quantization of the Einstein wormhole throat theory for an eternal Schwarzschild black hole. We numerically solve the difference equation describing the quantum evolution of an initially Gaussian, semi-classical wave packet. As expected from previous work on loop quantum cosmology, the wave packet remains semi-classical until it nears the classical singularity at which point it enters a quantum regime in which the fluctuations become large. The expectation value of the radius reaches a minimum as the wave packet is reflected from the origin and emerges to form a near Gaussian but asymmetrical semi-classical state at late times. The value of the minimum depends in a non-trivial way on the initial mass/energy of the pulse, its width and the polymerization scale. For wave packets that are sufficiently narrow near the bounce, the semi-classical bounce radius is obtained. Although the numerics become difficult to control in this limit, we argue that for pulses of finite width the bounce persists as the polymerization scale goes to zero, suggesting that in this model the loop quantum gravity effects mimicked by polymer quantization do not play a crucial role in the quantum bounce.

Charged Unruh effect on geon spacetimes

A topological geon black hole with gauge charges may have a gauge bundle that necessarily incorporates charge conjugation as a gauge symmetry. This happens for example for the Reissner-Nordstrom geon. We show that gauging the charge conjugation leaves an imprint in the Unruh effect: the geon's exterior region contains non-thermal correlations for particle pairs of the same, rather than opposite, charge. The phenomenon occurs also in topologically similar Rindler spacetimes with a background gauge field.

Isotropic AdS/CFT fireball

We study the AdS/CFT thermodynamics of the spatially isotropic counterpart of the Bjorken similarity flow in d-dimensional Minkowski space with d>=3, and of its generalisation to linearly expanding d-dimensional Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with arbitrary values of the spatial curvature parameter k. The bulk solution is a nonstatic foliation of the generalised Schwarzschild-AdS black hole with a horizon of constant curvature k. The boundary matter is an expanding perfect fluid that satisfies the first law of thermodynamics for all values of the temperature and the spatial curvature, but it admits a description as a scale-invariant fluid in local thermal equilibrium only when the inverse Hawking temperature is negligible compared with the spatial curvature length scale. A Casimir-type term in the holographic energy-momentum tensor is identified from the threshold of black hole formation and is shown to take different forms for k>=0 and k<0.

Casimir energy in the gauge/gravity description of Bjorken flow?

In the AdS/CFT description of four-dimensional QCD matter undergoing Bjorken expansion, does the holographic energy-momentum tensor contain a Casimir-type contribution that should not be attributed to thermal matter? When the bulk isometry ansatz that yielded such a Casimir term for (1+1)-dimensional boundary matter is generalised to a four-dimensional boundary, we show that a Casimir term does not arise, owing to singularities in the five-dimensional bulk solution. The geometric reasons are traced to a difference between the isometries of AdS_3 and AdS_{d+1} for d>=3.

Transition rate of the Unruh-DeWitt detector in curved spacetime

We examine the Unruh-DeWitt particle detector coupled to a scalar field in an arbitrary Hadamard state in four-dimensional curved spacetime. Using smooth switching functions to turn on and off the interaction, we obtain a regulator-free integral formula for the total excitation probability, and we show that an instantaneous transition rate can be recovered in a suitable limit. Previous results in Minkowski space are recovered as a special case. As applications, we consider an inertial detector in the Rindler vacuum and a detector at rest in a static Newtonian gravitational field. Gravitational corrections to decay rates in atomic physics laboratory experiments on the surface of the Earth are estimated to be suppressed by 42 orders of magnitude.

Gravity dual of conformal matter collisions in 1+1 dimensions

We find the three-dimensional gravity dual of a process in which two clouds of (1+1)-dimensional conformal matter moving in opposite directions collide. This gives the most general conformally invariant holographic flow in the 1+1 dimensional boundary theory in terms of two arbitrary functions. With a suitable choice of the arbitrary functions the process can be interpreted as an opaque collision of two extended systems with central, fragmentation and interaction regions. Comparison with classical gluon field calculations relates the size of the system with the saturation scale.

Gravity dual of 1+1 dimensional Bjorken expansion

We study the application of AdS/CFT duality to longitudinal boost invariant Bjorken expansion of QCD matter produced in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. As the exact (1+4)-dimensional bulk solutions for the (1+3)-dimensional boundary theory are not known, we investigate in detail the (1+1)-dimensional boundary theory, where the bulk is AdS_3 gravity. We find an exact bulk solution, show that this solution describes part of the spinless Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole with the angular dimension unwrapped, and use the thermodynamics of the BTZ hole to recover the time-dependent temperature and entropy density on the boundary. After separating from the holographic energy-momentum tensor a vacuum contribution, given by the extremal black hole limit in the bulk, we find that the boundary fluid is an ideal gas in local thermal equilibrium. Including angular momentum in the bulk gives a boundary flow that is boost invariant but has a nonzero longitudinal velocity with respect to the Bjorken expansion.

Quantum gravity and the Coulomb potential

We apply a singularity resolution technique utilized in loop quantum gravity to the polymer representation of quantum mechanics on R with the singular -1/|x| potential. On an equispaced lattice, the resulting eigenvalue problem is identical to a finite difference approximation of the Schrodinger equation. We find numerically that the antisymmetric sector has an energy spectrum that converges to the usual Coulomb spectrum as the lattice spacing is reduced. For the symmetric sector, in contrast, the effect of the lattice spacing is similar to that of a continuum self-adjointness boundary condition at x=0, and its effect on the ground state is significant even if the spacing is much below the Bohr radius. Boundary conditions at the singularity thus have a significant effect on the polymer quantization spectrum even after the singularity has been regularized.

Transgressing the horizons: Time operator in two-dimensional dilaton gravity

We present a Dirac quantization of generic single-horizon black holes in two-dimensional dilaton gravity. The classical theory is first partially reduced by a spatial gauge choice under which the spatial surfaces extend from a black or white hole singularity to a spacelike infinity. The theory is then quantized in a metric representation, solving the quantum Hamiltonian constraint in terms of (generalized) eigenstates of the ADM mass operator and specifying the physical inner product by self-adjointness of a time operator that is affinely conjugate to the ADM mass. Regularity of the time operator across the horizon requires the operator to contain a quantum correction that distinguishes the future and past horizons and gives rise to a quantum correction in the hole's surface gravity. We expect a similar quantum correction to be present in systems whose dynamics admits black hole formation by gravitational collapse.

How often does the Unruh-DeWitt detector click? Regularisation by a spatial profile

We analyse within first-order perturbation theory the instantaneous transition rate of an accelerated Unruh-DeWitt particle detector whose coupling to a massless scalar field on four-dimensional Minkowski space is regularised by a spatial profile. For the Lorentzian profile introduced by Schlicht, the zero size limit is computed explicitly and expressed as a manifestly finite integral formula that no longer involves regulators or limits. The same transition rate is obtained for an arbitrary profile of compact support under a modified definition of spatial smearing. Consequences for the asymptotic behaviour of the transition rate are discussed. A number of stationary and nonstationary trajectories are analysed, recovering in particular the Planckian spectrum for uniform acceleration.

Excited by a quantum field: Does shape matter?

The instantaneous transition rate of an arbitrarily accelerated Unruh-DeWitt particle detector on four-dimensional Minkowski space is ill defined without regularisation. We show that Schlicht's regularisation as the zero-size limit of a Lorentz-function spatial profile yields a manifestly well-defined transition rate with physically reasonable asymptotic properties. In the special case of stationary trajectories, including uniform acceleration, we recover the results that have been previously obtained by a regularisation that relies on the stationarity. Finally, we discuss evidence for the conjecture that the zero-size limit of the transition rate is independent of the detector profile.

SO_0(1,d+1) Racah coefficients: Type I representations

We use AdS/CFT inspired methods to study the Racah coefficients for type I representations of the Lorentz group SO_0(1,d+1) with d>1. For such representations (a multiple of) the Racah coefficient can be represented as an integral of a product of 6 bulk-to-bulk propagators over 4 copies of the hyperbolic space H_{d+1}. To compute the integrals we represent the bulk-to-bulk propagators in terms of bulk-to-boundary ones. The bulk integrals can be computed explicitly, and the boundary integrations are carried out by introducing Feynman parameters. The final result is an integral representation of the Racah coefficient given by 4 Barnes-Mellin type integrals.

Group averaging, positive definiteness and superselection sectors

I discuss group averaging as a method for quantising constrained systems whose gauge group is a noncompact Lie group. Focussing on three case studies, I address the convergence of the averaging, possible indefiniteness of the prospective physical inner product and the emergence of superselection sectors.

Superselection sectors in the Ashtekar-Horowitz-Boulware model

We investigate refined algebraic quantisation of the constrained Hamiltonian system introduced by Boulware as a simplified version of the Ashtekar-Horowitz model. The dimension of the physical Hilbert space is finite and asymptotes in the semiclassical limit to 1/(2π\hbar) times the volume of the reduced phase space. The representation of the physical observable algebra is irreducible for generic potentials but decomposes into irreducible subrepresentations for certain special potentials. The superselection sectors are related to singularities in the reduced phase space and to the rate of divergence in the formal group averaging integral. There is no tunnelling into the classically forbidden region of the unreduced configuration space, but there can be tunnelling between disconnected components of the classically allowed region.
