Compact embeddings of Bessel Potential Spaces

Bessel potential spaces have gained renewed interest due to their robust structural properties and applications in fractional partial differential equations (PDEs). These spaces, derived through complex interpolation between Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces, are closely related to the Riesz fractional gradient. Recent studies have demonstrated continuous and compact embeddings of Bessel potential spaces into Lebesgue spaces. This paper extends these findings by addressing the compactness of continuous embeddings from the perspective of abstract interpolation theory. We present three distinct proofs, leveraging compactness results, translation estimates, and the relationship between Gagliardo and Bessel spaces. Our results provide a deeper understanding of the functional analytic properties of Bessel potential spaces and their applications in fractional PDEs.

Nonlocal Green theorems and Helmholtz decompositions for truncated fractional gradients

In this work we further develop a nonlocal calculus theory (initially introduced in [5]) associated with singular fractional-type operators which exhibit kernels with finite support of interactions. The applicability of the framework to nonlocal elasticity and the theory of peridynamics has attracted increased interest and motivation to study it and find connections with its classical counterpart. In particular, a critical contribution of this paper is producing vector identities, integration by part type theorems (such as the Divergence Theorem, Green identities), as well as a Helmholtz-Hodge decomposition. The estimates, together with the analysis performed along the way provide stepping stones for proving additional results in the framework, as well as pathways for numerical implementations.

Nonlocal basis pursuit: Nonlocal optimal design of conductive domains in the vanishing material limit

We consider the problem of optimal distribution of a limited amount of conductive material in systems governed by local and non-local scalar diffusion laws. Of particular interest for these problems is the study of the limiting case, which appears when the amount of available material is driven to zero. Such a limiting process is of both theoretical and practical interest and continues to be a subject of active study. In the local case, the limiting optimization problem is convex and has a well understood basis pursuit structure. Still this local problem is quite challenging both analytically and numerically because it is posed in the space of vector-valued Radon measures. With this in mind we focus on identifying the vanishing material limit for the corresponding nonlocal optimal design problem. Similarly to the local case, the resulting nonlocal problem is convex and has the basis pursuit structure in terms of nonlocal antisymmetric two-point fluxes. In stark contrast with the local case, the nonlocal problem admits solutions in Lebesgue spaces with mixed exponents. When the nonlocal interaction horizon is driven to zero, the "vanishing material limit" nonlocal problems provide a one-sided estimate for the corresponding local measure-valued optimal design problem. The surprising fact is that in order to transform the one-sided estimate into a true limiting process it is sufficient to disregard the antisymmetry requirement on the two point fluxes. This result relies on duality and requires generalizing some of the well known nonlocal characterizations of Sobolev spaces to the case of mixed Lebesgue exponents.

Minimizers of Nonlocal Polyconvex Energies in Nonlocal Hyperelasticity

We develop a theory of existence of minimizers of energy functionals in vectorial problems based on a nonlocal gradient under Dirichlet boundary conditions. The model shares many features with the peridynamics model and is also applicable to nonlocal solid mechanics, especially nonlinear elasticity. This nonlocal gradient was introduced in an earlier work, inspired by Riesz' fractional gradient, but suitable for bounded domains. The main assumption on the integrand of the energy is polyconvexity. Thus, we adapt the corresponding results of the classical case to this nonlocal context, notably, Piola's identity, the integration by parts of the determinant and the weak continuity of the determinant. The proof exploits the fact that every nonlocal gradient is a classical gradient. Contrary to classical elasticity, this existence result is compatible with cavitation and fracture.

Spectral stability for the perydinamic fractional $p$-Laplacian

In this work we analyze the behavior of the spectrum of the peridynamic fractional $p$-Laplacian, $(-Δ_p)_δ^s$, under the limit process $δ\to0^+$ or $δ\to+\infty$. We prove spectral convergence to the classical $p$-Laplacian under a suitable scaling as $δ\to0^+$ and to the fractional $p$-Laplacian as $δ\to+\infty$.

$Γ$-convergence of polyconvex functionals involving s-fractional gradients to their local counterparts

In this paper we study localization properties of the Riesz $s$-fractional gradient $D^s u$ of a vectorial function $u$ as $s \nearrow 1$. The natural space to work with $s$-fractional gradients is the Bessel space $H^{s,p}$ for $0 < s < 1$ and $1 < p < \infty$. This space converges, in a precise sense, to the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}$ when $s \nearrow 1$. We prove that the $s$-fractional gradient $D^s u$ of a function $u$ in $W^{1,p}$ converges strongly to the classical gradient $Du$. We also show a weak compactness result in $W^{1,p}$ for sequences of functions $u_s$ with bounded $L^p$ norm of $D^s u_s$ as $s \nearrow 1$. Moreover, the weak convergence of $D^s u_s$ in $L^p$ implies the weak continuity of its minors, which allows us to prove a semicontinuity result of polyconvex functionals involving $s$-fractional gradients defined in $H^{s,p}$ to their local counterparts defined in $W^{1,p}$. The full $Γ$-convergence of the functionals is achieved only for the case $p>n$.

A restricted nonlocal operator bridging together the Laplacian and the Fractional Laplacian

In this work we introduce volume constraint problems involving the nonlocal operator $(-Δ)_δ^{s}$, closely related to the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^{s}$, and depending upon a parameter $δ>0$ called horizon. We study the associated linear and spectral problems and the behavior of these volume constraint problems when $δ\to0^+$ and $δ\to+\infty$. Through these limit processes on $(-Δ)_δ^{s}$ we derive spectral convergence to the local Laplacian and to the fractional Laplacian as $δ\to 0^+$ and $δ\to +\infty$ respectively, as well as we prove the convergence of solutions of these problems to solutions of a local Dirichlet problem involving $(-Δ)$ as $δ\to0^+$ or to solutions of a nonlocal fractional Dirichlet problem involving $(-Δ)^s$ as $δ\to+\infty$.

Fractional Piola identity and polyconvexity in fractional spaces

In this paper we address nonlocal vector variational principles obtained by substitution of the classical gradient by the Riesz fractional gradient. We show the existence of minimizers in Bessel fractional spaces under the main assumption of polyconvexity of the energy density, and, as a consequence, the existence of solutions to the associated Euler--Lagrange system of nonlinear fractional PDE. The main ingredient is the fractional Piola identity, which establishes that the fractional divergence of the cofactor matrix of the fractional gradient vanishes. This identity implies the weak convergence of the determinant of the fractional gradient, and, in turn, the existence of minimizers of the nonlocal energy. Contrary to local problems in nonlinear elasticity, this existence result is compatible with solutions presenting discontinuities at points and along hypersurfaces.

A simple characterization of $H$-convergence for a class of nonlocal problems

This is a follow-up of a paper by Fernández-Bonder-Ritorto-Salort [8], where the classical concept of $H$-convergence was extended to fractional \(p\)-Laplace type operators. In this short paper we provide an explicit characterization of this notion by demonstrating that the weak-* convergence of the coefficients is an equivalent condition for $H$-convergence of the sequence of nonlocal operators. This result takes advantage of nonlocality and is in stark contrast to the local p-Laplacian case

From nonlocal Eringen's model to fractional elasticity

Eringen's model is one of the most popular theories in nonlocal elasticity. It has been applied to many practical situations with the objective of removing the anomalous stress concentrations around geometric shape singularities, which appear when the local modelling is used. Despite the great popularity of Eringen's model in mechanical engineering community, even the most basic questions such as the existence and uniqueness of solutions have been rarely considered in the research literature for this model. In this work we focus on precisely these questions, proving that the model is in general ill-posed in the case of smooth kernels, the case which appears rather often in numerical studies. We also consider the case of singular, non-smooth kernels, and for the paradigmatic case of the Riesz potential we establish the well-posedness of the model in fractional Sobolev spaces. For such a kernel, in dimension one the model reduces to the well-known fractional Laplacian. Finally, we discuss possible extensions of Eringen's model to spatially heterogeneous material distributions.
