3-manifold polynomials

We propose a way to derive polynomial invariants of closed, orientable $3$-manifolds from Heegaard diagrams via cellularly embedded graphs. Given a Heegaard diagram of an irreducible $3$-manifold $M$, we associate a Heegaard graph $G\subset S$ on the Heegaard surface and restrict to those arising from minimal-genus splittings with a minimal number of vertices. We prove that, up to the natural equivalence of embedded graphs, only finitely many of such minimal Heegaard graphs occur for a fixed manifold. This finiteness enables the definition of $3$-manifold polynomials by evaluating embedded-graph polynomials on representatives of these classes. For lens spaces we show that the associated Heegaard graphs can be fully classified, and that this classification coincides with the classical one for $L(p,q)$. In this setting the Tutte, Penrose, and Bollobás-Riordan polynomials behave as invariants of lens spaces, and computational evidence suggests that they may in fact be complete invariants. For the Poincaré homology sphere we find that distinct minimal Heegaard diagrams yield coinciding ribbon-graph polynomials, opening the way to interesting conjectures about their discriminating power and the possibility of completeness for broader families of $3$-manifolds.

Perfect discrete Morse functions on Stratifoldds

In this paper, we study the computation of optimal discrete Morse functions on stratifolds. In particular, we present an algorithm that efficiently computes such functions for a broad class of them. Moreover, we characterize the conditions under which these functions are perfect.

Decompositions of three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces

We extend basic results in $3$-manifold topology to general three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces (or Alexandrov $3$-spaces for short), providing a unified framework for manifold and non-manifold spaces. We generalize the connected sum to non-manifold $3$-spaces and prove a prime decomposition theorem, exhibit an infinite family of closed, prime non-manifold $3$-spaces which are not irreducible, and establish a conjecture of Mitsuishi and Yamaguchi on the structure of closed, simply-connected Alexandrov $3$-spaces with non-negative curvature. Additionally, we define a notion of generalized Dehn surgery for Alexandrov $3$-spaces and show that any closed Alexandrov $3$-space may be obtained by performing generalized Dehn surgery on a link in $S^3$ or the non-trivial $S^2$-bundle over $S^1$. As an application of this result, we show that every closed Alexandrov $3$-space is homeomorphic to the boundary of a $4$-dimensional Alexandrov space.

A persistent-homology-based turbulence index & some applications of TDA on financial markets

Topological Data Analysis (TDA) is a modern approach to Data Analysis focusing on the topological features of data; it has been widely studied in recent years and used extensively in Biology, Physics, and many other areas. However, financial markets have been studied slightly through TDA. Here we present a quick review of some recent applications of TDA on financial markets, including applications in the early detection of turbulence periods in financial markets and how TDA can help to get new insights while investing. Also, we propose a new turbulence index based on persistent homology -- the fundamental tool for TDA -- that seems to capture critical transitions in financial data; we tested our index with different financial time series (S&P500, Russel 2000, S&P/BMV IPC and Nikkei 225) and crash events (Black Monday crash, dot-com crash, 2007-08 crash and COVID-19 crash). Furthermore, we include an introduction to persistent homology so the reader can understand this paper without knowing TDA.
