Alternative tangent and cotangent structures and their physical applications

The conditions under which a given manifold $M$ may be given a tangent bundle or a cotangent bundle structure are analyzed. This is an important property arising in different contexts. For instance, in the study of integrability of a given dynamics the existence of alternative compatible structures is very relevant, as well as in the geometric approach to Classical Mechanics. On the other hand in the quantum-to-classical transition, a Weyl system plays an important role for it provides (within the so-called Weyl-Wigner formalism) a description of quantum mechanics on a (symplectic) phase-space $M$. A Lagrangian subspace $Q\subset M$ of the (linear) phase space determines thus a maximal set of pairwise commuting unitary operators, which is used to parametrize the quantum states. As the choice of this maximal Abelian set of observables is not unique, the different choices make the phase space to become diffeomorphic to different cotangent bundles $T^*Q$ corresponding to different choices for the base manifold (and hence the fibers). These motivating ideas are used to study how to define alternative tangent and/or cotangent bundle structures on a phase space.

Sundman transformation and alternative tangent structuresSundman transformation and alternative tangent structures

A geometric approach to Sundman transformation defined by basic functions for systems of second-order differential equations is developed and the necessity of a change of the tangent structure by means of the function defining the Sundman transformation is shown. Among other applications of such theory we study the linearisability of a system of second-order differential equations and in particular the simplest case of a second-order differential equation. The theory is illustrated with several examples.

Some Applications of Affine in Velocities Lagrangians in Two-dimensional Systems

The 2-dimensional inverse problem for first-order systems is analysed and a method to construct an affine Lagrangian for such systems is developed. The determination of such Lagrangians is based on the theory of the Jacobi multiplier for the system of differential equations. We illustrate our analysis with several examples of families of forces that are relevant in mechanics, on one side, and of some relevant biological systems, on the other.

Reduction and integrability: a geometric perspective

A geometric approach to integrability and reduction of dynamical system is developed from a modern perspective. The main ingredients in such analysis are the infinitesimal symmetries and the tensor fields that are invariant under the given dynamics. Particular emphasis is given to the existence of invariant volume forms and the associated Jacobi multiplier theory, and then the Hojman symmetry theory is developed as a complement to Noether theorem and non-Noether constants of motion. The geometric approach to Hamilton-Jacobi equation is shown to be a particular example of the search for related field in a lower dimensional manifold.

Infinitesimal time reparametrisation and its applications

A geometric approach to Sundman infinitesimal time-reparametrisation is given and some of its applications are used to illustrate the general theory. Special emphasis is put on geodesic motions and systems described by mechanical type Lagrangians. The Jacobi metric appears as a particular case of a Sundman transformation.

Jacobi multipliers and Hojman symmetry

The geometric intrinsic approach to Hojman symmetry is developed and use is made of the theory of the Jacobi last multipliers to find the corresponding conserved quantity for non divergence-free vector fields. The particular cases of autonomous Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems are studied as well as the generalization of these results to normalizer vector fields of the dynamics. The nonautonomous cases, where normalizer vector fields play a relevant role, are also developed.

Invariance of second order ordinary differential equations under two-dimensional affine subalgebras of EP Lie algebra

Using the only admissible rank-two realisations of the Lie algebra of the affine group in one dimension in terms of the Lie algebra of Lie symmetries of the Ermakov-Pinney (EP) equation, some classes of second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations solvable by reduction method are constructed. One class includes the standard EP equation as a special case. A new EP equation with a perturbed potential but admitting the same solution formula as EP itself arises. The solution of the dissipative EP equation is also discussed.

Rational deformations of conformal mechanics

We study deformations of the quantum conformal mechanics of De Alfaro-Fubini-Furlan with rational additional potential term generated by applying the generalized Darboux-Crum-Krein-Adler transformations to the quantum harmonic oscillator and by using the method of dual schemes and mirror diagrams. In this way we obtain infinite families of isospectral and non-isospectral deformations of the conformal mechanics model with special values of the coupling constant $g=m(m+1)$, $m\in {\mathbb N}$, in the inverse square potential term, and for each completely isospectral or gapped deformation given by a mirror diagram, we identify the sets of the spectrum-generating ladder operators which encode and coherently reflect its fine spectral structure. Each pair of these operators generates a nonlinear deformation of the conformal symmetry, and their complete sets pave the way for investigation of the associated superconformal symmetry deformations.

Quantization of Hamiltonian systems with a position dependent mass: Killing vector fields and Noether momenta approach

The quantization of systems with a position dependent mass (PDM) is studied. We present a method that starts with the study of the existence of Killing vector fields for the PDM geodesic motion (Lagrangian with a PDM kinetic term but without any potential) and the construction of the associated Noether momenta. Then the method considers, as the appropriate Hilbert space, the space of functions that are square integrable with respect to a measure related with the PDM and, after that, it establishes the quantization, not of the canonical momenta $p$, but of the Noether momenta $P$ instead. The quantum Hamiltonian, that depends on the Noether momenta, is obtained as an Hermitian operator defined on the PDM Hilbert space. In the second part several systems with position-dependent mass, most of them related with nonlinear oscillators, are quantized by making use of the method proposed in the first part.

ABC of ladder operators for rationally extended quantum harmonic oscillator systems

The problem of construction of ladder operators for rationally extended quantum harmonic oscillator (REQHO) systems of a general form is investigated in the light of existence of different schemes of the Darboux-Crum-Krein-Adler transformations by which such systems can be generated from the quantum harmonic oscillator. Any REQHO system is characterized by the number of separated states in its spectrum, the number of `valence bands' in which the separated states are organized, and by the total number of the missing energy levels and their position. All these peculiarities of a REQHO system are shown to be detected and reflected by a trinity $(\mathcal{A}^\pm$, $\mathcal{B}^\pm$, $\mathcal{C}^\pm$) of the basic (primary) lowering and raising ladder operators related between themselves by certain algebraic identities with coefficients polynomially-dependent on the Hamiltonian. We show that all the secondary, higher-order ladder operators are obtainable by a composition of the basic ladder operators of the trinity which form the set of the spectrum-generating operators. Each trinity, in turn, can be constructed from the intertwining operators of the two complementary minimal schemes of the Darboux-Crum-Krein-Adler transformations.

Revisiting Lie integrability by quadratures from a geometric perspective

After a short review of the classical Lie theorem, a finite dimensional Lie algebra of vector fields is considered and the most general conditions under which the integral curves of one of the fields can be obtained by quadratures in a prescribed way will be discussed, determining also the number of quadratures needed to integrate the system. The theory will be illustrated with examples andbn an extension of the theorem where the Lie algebras are replaced by some distributions will also be presented.

Ground-state isolation and discrete flows in a rationally extended quantum harmonic oscillator

Ladder operators for the simplest version of a rationally extended quantum harmonic oscillator (REQHO) are constructed by applying a Darboux transformation to the quantum harmonic oscillator system. It is shown that the physical spectrum of the REQHO carries a direct sum of a trivial and an infinite-dimensional irreducible representation of the polynomially deformed bosonized osp(1|2) superalgebra. In correspondence with this the ground state of the system is isolated from other physical states but can be reached by ladder operators via non-physical energy eigenstates, which belong to either an infinite chain of similar eigenstates or to the chains with generalized Jordan states. We show that the discrete chains of the states generated by ladder operators and associated with physical energy levels include six basic generalized Jordan states, in comparison with the two basic Jordan states entering in analogous discrete chains for the quantum harmonic oscillator.

Structural aspects of Hamilton-Jacobi theory

In our previous papers [11,13] we showed that the Hamilton-Jacobi problem can be regarded as a way to describe a given dynamics on a phase space manifold in terms of a family of dynamics on a lower-dimensional manifold. We also showed how constants of the motion help to solve the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Here we want to delve into this interpretation by considering the most general case: a dynamical system on a manifold that is described in terms of a family of dynamics (`slicing vector fields') on lower-dimensional manifolds. We identify the relevant geometric structures that lead from this decomposition of the dynamics to the classical Hamilton-Jacobi theory, by considering special cases like fibred manifolds and Hamiltonian dynamics, in the symplectic framework and the Poisson one. We also show how a set of functions on a tangent bundle can determine a second-order dynamics for which they are constants of the motion.

Geometrical and Dynamical Aspects of Nonlinear Higher-Order Riccati Systems

We study a geometrical formulation of the nonlinear second-order Riccati equation (SORE) in terms of the projective vector field equation on $S^1$, whichn in turn is related to the stability algebra of Virasoro orbit. Using Darboux integrability method we obtain the first-integral of SORE and the results are applied to the study of its Lagrangian and Hamiltonian description. We unveil the relation between the Darboux polynomials and master symmetries associated to second-order Riccati. Using these results we show the existence of a Lagrangian description for the related system, and the Painlevé II equation is analysed.

Noncommutative Classical Dynamics on Velocity Phase Space and Souriau Formalism

We consider Feynman-Dyson's proof of Maxwell's equations using the Jacobi identities on the velocity phase space. In this paper we generalize the Feynman-Dyson's scheme by incorporating the non-commutativity between various spatial coordinates along with the velocity coordinates. This allows us to study a generalized class of Hamiltonian systems. We explore various dynamical flows associated to the Souriau form associated to this generalized Feynman-Dyson's scheme. Moreover, using the Souriau form we show that these new classes of generalized systems are volume preserving mechanical systems.

Conformal Killing vector fields and a virial theorem

The virial theorem is formulated both intrinsically and in local coordinates for a Lagrangian system of mechanical type on a Riemann manifold. An import case studied in this paper is that of an affine virial function associated to a vector field on the configuration manifold. The special cases of a virial function associated to a Killing, a homothetic and a conformal Killing vector field are considered and the corresponding virial theorems are established for this type of functions.

Virial theorem in quasi-coordinates and Lie algebroid formalism

In this paper, the geometric approach to the virial theorem developed in \cite{CFR12} is written in terms of quasi-velocities (see \cite{CNCS07}). A generalization of the virial theorem for mechanical systems on Lie algebroids is also given, using the geometric tools of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics on the prolongation of the Lie algebroid.

A Quasi-Lie Schemes Approach to Second-Order Gambier Equations

A quasi-Lie scheme is a geometric structure that provides t-dependent changes of variables transforming members of an associated family of systems of first-order differential equations into members of the same family. In this note we introduce two quasi-Lie schemes for studying second-order Gambier equations in a geometric way. This allows us to study the transformation of these equations into simpler canonical forms, which solves a gap in the previous literature, and other relevant differential equations, which leads to derive new constants of motion for families of second-order Gambier equations. Additionally, we describe general solutions of certain second-order Gambier equations in terms of particular solutions of Riccati equations, linear systems, and t-dependent frequency harmonic oscillators.
