Superposition rules, Lie theorem and partial differential equations

A rigorous geometric proof of the Lie's Theorem on nonlinear superposition rules for solutions of non-autonomous ordinary differential equations is given filling in all the gaps present in the existing literature. The proof is based on an alternative but equivalent definition of a superposition rule: it is considered as a foliation with some suitable properties. The problem of uniqueness of the superposition function is solved, the key point being the codimension of the foliation constructed from the given Lie algebra of vector fields. Finally, as a more convincing argument supporting the use of this alternative definition of superposition rule, it is shown that this definition allows an immediate generalization of Lie's Theorem for the case of systems of partial differential equations.

Quantum Bi-Hamiltonian Systems

We define quantum bi-Hamiltonian systems, by analogy with the classical case, as derivations in operator algebras which are inner derivations with respect to two compatible associative structures. We find such structures by means of the associative version of Nijenhuis tensors. Explicit examples, e.g. for the harmonic oscillator, are given.

A Quantum Exactly Solvable Nonlinear Oscillator with quasi-Harmonic Behaviour

The quantum version of a non-linear oscillator, previouly analyzed at the classical level, is studied. This is a problem of quantization of a system with position-dependent mass of the form $m={(1+λx^2)}^{-1}$ and with a $\la$-dependent nonpolynomial rational potential. This $\la$-dependent system can be considered as a deformation of the harmonic oscillator in the sense that for $\la\to 0$ all the characteristics of the linear oscillator are recovered. Firstly, the $\la$-dependent Schrödinger equation is exactly solved as a Sturm-Liouville problem and the $\la$-dependent eigenenergies and eigenfunctions are obtained for both $\la>0$ and $\la<0$. The $\la$-dependent wave functions appear as related with a family of orthogonal polynomials that can be considered as $\la$-deformations of the standard Hermite polynomials. In the second part, the $\la$-dependent Schrödinger equation is solved by using the Schrödinger factorization method, the theory of intertwined Hamiltonians and the property of shape invariance as an approach. Finally, the new family of orthogonal polynomials is studied. We prove the existence of a $\la$-dependent Rodrigues formula, a generating function and $\la$-dependent recursion relations between polynomials of different orders.

Two important examples of nonlinear oscillators

We discuss a classical nonlinear oscillator, which is proved to be a superintegrable system for which the bounded motions are quasiperiodic oscillations and the unbounded (scattering) motions are represented by hyperbolic functions. This oscillator can be seen as a position-dependent mass system and we show a natural quantization prescription admitting a factorization with shape invariance for the $n=1$ case, and then the energy spectrum is found. Other isochronous systems which can also be considered as a generalization of the harmonic oscillator and admit a nonstandard Lagrangian description are also discussed.

Lagrangian Formalism for nonlinear second-order Riccati Systems: one-dimensional Integrability and two-dimensional Superintegrability

The existence of a Lagrangian description for the second-order Riccati equation is analyzed and the results are applied to the study of two different nonlinear systems both related with the generalized Riccati equation. The Lagrangians are nonnatural and the forces are not derivable from a potential. The constant value $E$ of a preserved energy function can be used as an appropriate parameter for characterizing the behaviour of the solutions of these two systems. In the second part the existence of two--dimensional versions endowed with superintegrability is proved. The explicit expressions of the additional integrals are obtained in both cases. Finally it is proved that the orbits of the second system, that represents a nonlinear oscillator, can be considered as nonlinear Lissajous figures

Central potentials on spaces of constant curvature: The Kepler problem on the two-dimensional sphere $S^2$ and the hyperbolic plane $H^2$

The Kepler problem is a dynamical system that is well defined not only on the Euclidean plane but also on the sphere and on the Hyperbolic plane. First, the theory of central potentials on spaces of constant curvature is studied. All the mathematical expressions are presented using the curvature $\k$ as a parameter, in such a way that they reduce to the appropriate property for the system on the sphere $S^2$, or on the hyperbolic plane $H^2$, when particularized for $\k>0$, or $\k<0$, respectively; in addition, the Euclidean case arises as the particular case $\k=0$. In the second part we study the main properties of the Kepler problem on spaces with curvature, we solve the equations and we obtain the explicit expressions of the orbits by using two different methods: first by direct integration and second by obtaining the $\k$-dependent version of the Binet's equation. The final part of the article, that has a more geometric character, is devoted to the study of the theory of conics on spaces of constant curvature.

A non-linear Oscillator with quasi-Harmonic behaviour: two- and $n$-dimensional Oscillators

A nonlinear two-dimensional system is studied by making use of both the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formalisms. The present model is obtained as a two-dimensional version of a one-dimensional oscillator previously studied at the classical and also at the quantum level. First, it is proved that it is a super-integrable system, and then the nonlinear equations are solved and the solutions are explicitly obtained. All the bounded motions are quasiperiodic oscillations and the unbounded (scattering) motions are represented by hyperbolic functions. In the second part the system is generalized to the case of $n$ degrees of freedom. Finally, the relation of this nonlinear system with the harmonic oscillator on spaces of constant curvature, two-dimensional sphere $S^2$ and hyperbolic plane $H^2$, is discussed.

Group theoretical approach to the intertwined Hamiltonians

We show that the finite difference Bäcklund formula for the Schrödinger Hamiltonians is a particular element of the transformation group on the set of Riccati equations considered by two of us in a previous paper. Then, we give a group theoretical explanation to the problem of Hamiltonians related by a first order differential operator. A generalization of the finite difference algorithm relating eigenfunctions of {\emph three} different Hamiltonians is found, and some illustrative examples of the theory are analyzed, finding new potentials for which one eigenfunction and its corresponding eigenvalue is exactly known.

Motion on Lie groups and its applications in Control Theory

The usefulness in control theory of the geometric theory of motion on Lie groups and homogeneous spaces will be shown. We quickly review some recent results concerning two methods to deal with these systems, namely, a generalization of the method proposed by Wei and Norman for linear systems, and a reduction procedure. This last method allows us to reduce the equation on a Lie group $G$ to that on a subgroup $H$, provided a particular solution of an associated problem in $G/H$ is known. These methods are shown to be very appropriate to deal with control systems on Lie groups and homogeneous spaces, through the specific examples of the planar rigid body with two oscillators and the front-wheel driven kinematic car.

Applications of Lie systems in Quantum Mechanics and Control Theory

Some simple examples from quantum physics and control theory are used to illustrate the application of the theory of Lie systems. We will show, in particular, that for certain physical models both of the corresponding classical and quantum problems can be treated in a similar way, may be up to the replacement of the involved Lie group by a central extension of it. The geometric techniques developed for dealing with Lie systems are also used in problems of control theory. Specifically, we will study some examples of control systems on Lie groups and homogeneous spaces.

On singular Lagrangians affine in velocities

The properties of Lagrangians affine in velocities are analyzed in a geometric way. These systems are necessarily singular and exhibit, in general, gauge invariance. The analysis of constraint functions and gauge symmetry leads us to a complete classification of such Lagrangians.

Non-symplectic symmetries and bi-Hamiltonian structures of the rational Harmonic Oscillator

The existence of bi-Hamiltonian structures for the rational Harmonic Oscillator (non-central harmonic oscillator with rational ratio of frequencies) is analyzed by making use of the geometric theory of symmetries. We prove that these additional structures are a consequence of the existence of dynamical symmetries of non-symplectic (non-canonical) type. The associated recursion operators are also obtained.

Singular Lagrangians in supermechanics

The time evolution operator $K$ is introduced in the graded context and its main properties are discussed. In particular, the operator $K$ is used to analize the projectability of constraint functions arising in the Lagrangian formalism for singular Lagrangians.

A new geometric approach to Lie systems and physical applications

The characterization of systems of differential equations admitting a superposition function allowing us to write the general solution in terms of any fundamental set of particular solutions is discussed. These systems are shown to be related with equations on a Lie group and with some connections in fiber bundles. We develop two methods for dealing with such systems: the generalized Wei--Norman method and the reduction method, which is very useful when particular solutions of the original problem are known. The theory is illustrated with some applications in both classical and quantum mechanics.

Shape Invariant potentials depending on n parameters transformed by translation

Shape Invariant potentials in the sense of [Gendenshte\"ın L.É., JETP Lett. 38, (1983) 356] which depend on more than two parameters are not know to date. In [Cooper F., Ginocchio J.N. and Khare A., Phys. Rev. {\bf 36 D}, (1987) 2458] was posed the problem of finding a class of Shape Invariant potentials which depend on n parameters transformed by translation, but it was not solved. We analyze the problem using some properties of the Riccati equation and we find the general solution.

Sections along maps in Geometry and Physics

This paper points out the usefulness of the concept of derivation along a map in many problems in Geometry and Physics. In particular it will be shown that this approach allows us to translate the usual concepts arising in Geometrical Mechanics, when appropriately written in a new way, to the framework of Supermechanics.

Hamiltonian versus Lagrangian formulations of supermechanic

We take advantage of different generalizations of the tangent manifold to the context of graded manifolds, together with the notion of super section along a morphism of graded manifolds, to obtain intrinsic definitions of the main objects in supermechanics such as, the vertical endomorphism, the canonical and the Cartan's graded forms, the total time derivative operator and the super--Legendre transformation. In this way, we obtain a correspondence between the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formulations of supermechanics.
