Non-lorentzian spacetimes

I review some of my recent work on non-lorentzian geometry. I review the classification of kinematical Lie algebras and their associated Klein geometries. I then describe the Cartan geometries modelled on them and their characterisation in terms of their intrinsic torsion. (To appear in the special issue "Applications of transformation groups" to be published by the Journal of Differential Geometry and Applications.)

Spatially isotropic homogeneous spacetimes

We classify simply-connected homogeneous ($D+1$)-dimensional spacetimes for kinematical and aristotelian Lie groups with $D$-dimensional space isotropy for all $D\geq 0$. Besides well-known spacetimes like Minkowski and (anti) de Sitter we find several new classes of geometries, some of which exist only for $D=1,2$. These geometries share the same amount of symmetry (spatial rotations, boosts and spatio-temporal translations) as the maximally symmetric spacetimes, but unlike them they do not necessarily admit an invariant metric. We determine the possible limits between the spacetimes and interpret them in terms of contractions of the corresponding transitive Lie algebras. We investigate geometrical properties of the spacetimes such as whether they are reductive or symmetric as well as the existence of invariant structures (riemannian, lorentzian, galilean, carrollian, aristotelian) and, when appropriate, discuss the torsion and curvature of the canonical invariant connection as a means of characterising the different spacetimes.

Killing superalgebras for lorentzian five-manifolds

We calculate the relevant Spencer cohomology of the minimal Poincaré superalgebra in 5 spacetime dimensions and use it to define Killing spinors via a connection on the spinor bundle of a 5-dimensional lorentzian spin manifold. We give a definition of bosonic backgrounds in terms of this data. By imposing constraints on the curvature of the spinor connection, we recover the field equations of minimal (ungauged) 5-dimensional supergravity, but also find a set of field equations for an $\mathfrak{sp}(1)$-valued one-form which we interpret as the bosonic data of a class of rigid supersymmetric theories on curved backgrounds. We define the Killing superalgebra of bosonic backgrounds and show that their existence is implied by the field equations. The maximally supersymmetric backgrounds are characterised and their Killing superalgebras are explicitly described as filtered deformations of the Poincaré superalgebra.

On the intrinsic torsion of spacetime structures

We briefly review the notion of the intrinsic torsion of a $G$-structure and then go on to classify the intrinsic torsion of the $G$-structures associated with spacetimes: namely, galilean (or Newton-Cartan), carrollian, aristotelian and bargmannian. In the case of galilean structures, the intrinsic torsion classification agrees with the well-known classification into torsionless, twistless torsional and torsional Newton-Cartan geometries. In the case of carrollian structures, we find that intrinsic torsion allows us to classify Carroll manifolds into four classes, depending on the action of the Carroll vector field on the spatial metric, or equivalently in terms of the nature of the null hypersurfaces of a lorentzian manifold into which a carrollian geometry may embed. By a small refinement of the results for galilean and carrollian structures, we show that there are sixteen classes of aristotelian structures, which we characterise geometrically. Finally, the bulk of the paper is devoted to the case of bargmannian structures, where we find twenty-seven classes which we also characterise geometrically while simultaneously relating some of them to the galilean and carrollian structures. This paper is dedicated to Dmitri Vladimirovich Alekseevsky on his 80th birthday.

On the algebraic structure of Killing superalgebras

We study the algebraic structure of the Killing superalgebra of a supersymmetric background of $11$-dimensional supergravity and show that it is isomorphic to a filtered deformation of a $\mathbb Z$-graded subalgebra of the Poincaré superalgebra. We are able to map the classification problem for highly supersymmetric backgrounds (i.e., those which preserve more than half the supersymmetry) to the classification problem of a certain class of filtered deformations of graded subalgebras of the Poincaré superalgebra. We show that one can reconstruct a highly supersymmetric background from its Killing superalgebra; in so doing, we relate the bosonic field equations of $11$-dimensional supergravity to the Jacobi identity of the Killing superalgebra and show in this way that preserving more than half the supersymmetry implies the bosonic field equations.

Kinematical superspaces

We classify $N{=}1$ $d=4$ kinematical and aristotelian Lie superalgebras with spatial isotropy, but not necessarily parity nor time-reversal invariance. Employing a quaternionic formalism which makes rotational covariance manifest and simplifies many of the calculations, we find a list of $43$ isomorphism classes of Lie superalgebras, some with parameters, whose (nontrivial) central extensions are also determined. We then classify their corresponding simply-connected homogeneous $(4|4)$-dimensional superspaces, resulting in a list of $27$ homogeneous superspaces, some with parameters, all of which are reductive. We determine the invariants of low rank and explore how these superspaces are related via geometric limits.

Geometry and BMS Lie algebras of spatially isotropic homogeneous spacetimes

Simply-connected homogeneous spacetimes for kinematical and aristotelian Lie algebras (with space isotropy) have recently been classified in all dimensions. In this paper, we continue the study of these "maximally symmetric" spacetimes by investigating their local geometry. For each such spacetime and relative to exponential coordinates, we calculate the (infinitesimal) action of the kinematical symmetries, paying particular attention to the action of the boosts, showing in almost all cases that they act with generic non-compact orbits. We also calculate the soldering form, the associated vielbein and any invariant aristotelian, galilean or carrollian structures. The (conformal) symmetries of the galilean and carrollian structures we determine are typically infinite-dimensional and reminiscent of BMS Lie algebras. We also determine the space of invariant affine connections on each homogeneous spacetime and work out their torsion and curvature.

Kinematical Lie algebras in 2+1 dimensions

We classify kinematical Lie algebras in dimension 2+1. This is approached via the classification of deformations of the static kinematical Lie algebra. In addition, we determine which kinematical Lie algebras admit invariant symmetric inner products.

Killing superalgebras for Lorentzian six-manifolds

We calculate the Spencer cohomology of the $(1,0)$ Poincaré superalgebras in six dimensions: with and without R-symmetry. As the cases of four and eleven dimensions taught us, we may read off from this calculation a Killing spinor equation which allows the determination of which geometries admit rigidly supersymmetric theories in this dimension. We prove that the resulting Killing spinors generate a Lie superalgebra and determine the geometries admitting the maximal number of such Killing spinors. They are divided in two branches. One branch consists of the lorentzian Lie groups with bi-invariant metrics and, as a special case, it includes the lorentzian Lie groups with a self-dual Cartan three-form which define the maximally supersymmetric backgrounds of $(1,0)$ Poincaré supergravity in six dimensions. The notion of Killing spinor on the other branch does not depend on the choice of a three-form but rather on a one-form valued in the R-symmetry algebra. In this case, we obtain three different (up to local isometry) maximally supersymmetric backgrounds, which are distinguished by the causal type of the one-form.

Homogeneous M2 duals

Motivated by the search for new gravity duals to M2 branes with $N>4$ supersymmetry --- equivalently, M-theory backgrounds with Killing superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(N|4)$ for $N>4$ --- we classify homogeneous M-theory backgrounds with symmetry Lie algebra $\mathfrak{so}(n) \oplus \mathfrak{so}(3,2)$ for $n=5,6,7$. We find that there are no new backgrounds with $n=6,7$ but we do find a number of new (to us) backgrounds with $n=5$. All backgrounds are metrically products of the form $\operatorname{AdS}_4 \times P^7$, with $P$ riemannian and homogeneous under the action of $\operatorname{SO}(5)$, or $S^4 \times Q^7$ with $Q$ lorentzian and homogeneous under the action of $\operatorname{SO}(3,2)$. At least one of the new backgrounds is supersymmetric (albeit with only $N=2$) and we show that it can be constructed from a supersymmetric Freund--Rubin background via a Wick rotation. Two of the new backgrounds have only been approximated numerically. (The second version of this paper includes an appendix by Alexander~S.~Haupt, closing a gap in our original analysis.)

Killing superalgebras for Lorentzian four-manifolds

We determine the Killing superalgebras underpinning field theories with rigid unextended supersymmetry on Lorentzian four-manifolds by re-interpreting them as filtered deformations of $\mathbb{Z}$-graded subalgebras with maximum odd dimension of the $N{=}1$ Poincaré superalgebra in four dimensions. Part of this calculation involves computing a Spencer cohomology group which, by analogy with a similar result in eleven dimensions, prescribes a notion of Killing spinor, which we identify with the defining condition for bosonic supersymmetric backgrounds of minimal off-shell supergravity in four dimensions. We prove that such Killing spinors always generate a Lie superalgebra, and that this Lie superalgebra is a filtered deformation of a subalgebra of the $N{=}1$ Poincaré superalgebra in four dimensions. Demanding the flatness of the connection defining the Killing spinors, we obtain equations satisfied by the maximally supersymmetric backgrounds. We solve these equations, arriving at the classification of maximally supersymmetric backgrounds whose associated Killing superalgebras are precisely the filtered deformations we classify in this paper.

Spencer cohomology and eleven-dimensional supergravity

We recover the classification of the maximally supersymmetric bosonic backgrounds of eleven-dimensional supergravity by Lie algebraic means. We classify all filtered deformations of the $\mathbb Z$-graded subalgebras $\mathfrak{h}=\mathfrak{h}_{-2}\oplus\mathfrak{h}_{-1}\oplus\mathfrak{h}_{0}$ of the Poincaré superalgebra $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{g}_{-2}\oplus\mathfrak{g}_{-1}\oplus\mathfrak{g}_{0}=V\oplus S\oplus \mathfrak{so}(V)$ which differ only in zero degree, that is $\mathfrak{h}_0\subset\mathfrak{g}_0$ and $\mathfrak{h}_j=\mathfrak{g}_j$ for $j<0$. Aside from the Poincaré superalgebra itself and its $\mathbb Z$-graded subalgebras, there are only three other Lie superalgebras, which are the symmetry superalgebras of the non-flat maximally supersymmetric backgrounds. In passing we identify the gravitino variation with (a component of) a Spencer cocycle.

Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on conformal supergravity backgrounds in ten dimensions

We consider bosonic supersymmetric backgrounds of ten-dimensional conformal supergravity. Up to local conformal isometry, we classify the maximally supersymmetric backgrounds, determine their conformal symmetry superalgebras and show how they arise as near-horizon geometries of certain half-BPS backgrounds or as a plane-wave limit thereof. We then show how to define Yang-Mills theory with rigid supersymmetry on any supersymmetric conformal supergravity background and, in particular, on the maximally supersymmetric backgrounds. We conclude by commenting on a striking resemblance between the supersymmetric backgrounds of ten-dimensional conformal supergravity and those of eleven-dimensional Poincaré supergravity.

Sasakian manifolds and M-theory

We extend the link between Einstein Sasakian manifolds and Killing spinors to a class of $η$-Einstein Sasakian manifolds, both in Riemannian and Lorentzian settings, characterising them in terms of generalised Killing spinors. We propose a definition of supersymmetric M-theory backgrounds on such a geometry and find a new class of such backgrounds, extending previous work of Haupt, Lukas and Stelle.

Supersymmetry of hyperbolic monopoles

We investigate what supersymmetry says about the geometry of the moduli space of hyperbolic monopoles. We construct a three-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Higgs theory on hyperbolic space whose half-BPS configurations coincide with (complexified) hyperbolic monopoles. We then study the action of the preserved supersymmetry on the collective coordinates and show that demanding closure of the supersymmetry algebra constraints the geometry of the moduli space of hyperbolic monopoles, turning it into a so-called pluricomplex manifold, thus recovering a recent result of Bielawski and Schwachhöfer.
