Symmetric backgrounds of type IIB supergravity

In this paper we study homogeneous backgrounds of type IIB supergravity where the underlying geometry is that of a symmetric space. We determine which ten-dimensional lorentzian symmetric spaces (up to local isometry) admit such backgrounds and in about two thirds of the cases we determine fully their moduli space.

Symmetric M-Theory Backgrounds

We classify symmetric backgrounds of eleven-dimensional supergravity up to local isometry. In other words, we classify triples (M,g,F), where (M,g) is an eleven-dimensional lorentzian locally symmetric space and F is an invariant 4-form, satisfying the equations of motion of eleven-dimensional supergravity. The possible (M,g) are given either by (not necessarily nondegenerate) Cahen-Wallach spaces or by products AdS_d x M for 1 < d < 8 and M a not necessarily irreducible riemannian symmetric space of dimension 11-d. In most cases we determine the corresponding F-moduli spaces.

The homogeneity theorem for supergravity backgrounds

We prove the strong homogeneity conjecture for eleven- and ten-dimensional (Poincaré) supergravity backgrounds. In other words, we show that any backgrounds of 11-dimensional, type I/heterotic or type II supergravity theories preserving a fraction greater than one half of the supersymmetry of the underlying theory are necessarily locally homogeneous. Moreover we show that the homogeneity is due precisely to the supersymmetry, so that at every point of the spacetime one can find a frame for the tangent space made out of Killing vectors constructed out of the Killing spinors.

Supersymmetry and homogeneity of M-theory backgrounds

We describe the construction of a Lie superalgebra associated to an arbitrary supersymmetric M-theory background, and discuss some examples. We prove that for backgrounds with more than 24 supercharges, the bosonic subalgebra acts locally transitively. In particular, we prove that backgrounds with more than 24 supersymmetries are necessarily (locally) homogeneous.

The Killing superalgebra of ten-dimensional supergravity backgrounds

We construct the Killing superalgebra of supersymmetric backgrounds of ten-dimensional heterotic and type II supergravities and prove that it is a Lie superalgebra. We also show that if the fraction of supersymmetry preserved by the background is greater than 1/2, in the heterotic case, or greater than 3/4 in the type II case, then the background is locally homogeneous.

Half-BPS M2-brane orbifolds

Smooth Freund-Rubin backgrounds of eleven-dimensional supergravity of the form AdS_4 x X^7 and preserving at least half of the supersymmetry have been recently classified. Requiring that amount of supersymmetry forces X to be a spherical space form, whence isometric to the quotient of the round 7-sphere by a freely-acting finite subgroup of SO(8). The classification is given in terms of ADE subgroups of the quaternions embedded in SO(8) as the graph of an automorphism. In this paper we extend this classification by dropping the requirement that the background be smooth, so that X is now allowed to be an orbifold of the round 7-sphere. We find that if the background preserves more than half of the supersymmetry, then it is automatically smooth in accordance with the homogeneity conjecture, but that there are many half-BPS orbifolds, most of them new. The classification is now given in terms of pairs of ADE subgroups of quaternions fibred over the same finite group. We classify such subgroups and then describe the resulting orbifolds in terms of iterated quotients. In most cases the resulting orbifold can be described as a sequence of cyclic quotients.

Half-BPS quotients in M-theory: ADE with a twist

We classify Freund-Rubin backgrounds of eleven-dimensional supergravity of the form AdS_4 x X^7 which are at least half BPS; equivalently, smooth quotients of the round 7-sphere by finite subgroups of SO(8) which admit an (N>3)-dimensional subspace of Killing spinors. The classification is given in terms of pairs consisting of an ADE subgroup of SU(2) and an automorphism defining its embedding in SO(8). In particular we find novel half-BPS quotients associated with the subgroups of type D_n (for n>5), E_7 and E_8 and their outer automorphisms.

Superpotentials for superconformal Chern-Simons theories from representation theory

These notes provide a detailed account of the universal structure of superpotentials defining a large class of superconformal Chern-Simons theories with matter, many of which appear as the low-energy descriptions of multiple M2-brane configurations. The amount of superconformal symmetry in the Chern-Simons-matter theory determines the minimum amount of global symmetry that the associated quartic superpotential must realise, which in turn restricts the matter superfield representations. Our analysis clarifies the necessary representation-theoretic data which guarantees a particular amount of superconformal symmetry. Thereby we shall recover all the examples of M2-brane effective field theories that have appeared in the recent literature. The results are based on a refinement of the unitary representation theory of Lie algebras to the case when the Lie algebra admits an ad-invariant inner product. The types of representation singled out by the superconformal symmetry turn out to be intimately associated with triple systems admitting embedding Lie (super)algebras and we obtain a number of new results about these triple systems which might be of independent interest. In particular, we prove that any metric 3-Lie algebra embeds into a real metric 3-graded Lie superalgebra in such a way that the 3-bracket is given by a nested Lie bracket.

Simplicity in the Faulkner construction

We revisit the Faulkner construction of metric 3-Leibniz algebras admitting an embedding Lie (super)algebra. In the case of positive-definite signature, we relate the various notions of simplicity: of the 3-algebra, of the representation and of the embedding Lie (super)algebra. This reduces their classification to the extant classifications of simple Lie (super)algebras.

Deformations of 3-algebras

We phrase deformations of n-Leibniz algebras in terms of the cohomology theory of the associated Leibniz algebra. We do the same for n-Lie algebras and for the metric versions of n-Leibniz and n-Lie algebras. We place particular emphasis on the case of n=3 and explore the deformations of 3-algebras of relevance to three-dimensional superconformal Chern--Simons theories with matter.

Metric 3-Lie algebras for unitary Bagger-Lambert theories

We prove a structure theorem for finite-dimensional indefinite-signature metric 3-Lie algebras admitting a maximally isotropic centre. This algebraic condition indicates that all the negative-norm states in the associated Bagger-Lambert theory can be consistently decoupled from the physical Hilbert space. As an immediate application of the theorem, new examples beyond index 2 are constructed. The lagrangian for the Bagger-Lambert theory based on a general physically admissible 3-Lie algebra of this kind is obtained. Following an expansion around a suitable vacuum, the precise relationship between such theories and certain more conventional maximally supersymmetric gauge theories is found. These typically involve particular combinations of N=8 super Yang-Mills and massive vector supermultiplets. A dictionary between the 3-Lie algebraic data and the physical parameters in the resulting gauge theories will thereby be provided.

On the Lie-algebraic origin of metric 3-algebras

Since the pioneering work of Bagger-Lambert and Gustavsson, there has been a proliferation of three-dimensional superconformal Chern-Simons theories whose main ingredient is a metric 3-algebra. On the other hand, many of these theories have been shown to allow for a reformulation in terms of standard gauge theory coupled to matter, where the 3-algebra does not appear explicitly. In this paper we reconcile these two sets of results by pointing out the Lie-algebraic origin of some metric 3-algebras, including those which have already appeared in three-dimensional superconformal Chern-Simons theories. More precisely, we show that the real 3-algebras of Cherkis-Saemann, which include the metric Lie 3-algebras as a special case, and the hermitian 3-algebras of Bagger-Lambert can be constructed from pairs consisting of a metric real Lie algebra and a faithful (real or complex, respectively) unitary representation. This construction generalises and we will see how to construct many kinds of metric 3-algebras from pairs consisting of a real metric Lie algebra and a faithful (real, complex or quaternionic) unitary representation. In the real case, these 3-algebras are precisely the Cherkis-Saemann algebras, which are then completely characterised in terms of this data. In the complex and quaternionic cases, they constitute generalisations of the Bagger-Lambert hermitian 3-algebras and anti-Lie triple systems, respectively, which underlie N=6 and N=5 superconformal Chern-Simons theories, respectively. In the process we rederive the relation between certain types of complex 3-algebras and metric Lie superalgebras.

On the maximal superalgebras of supersymmetric backgrounds

In this note we give a precise definition of the notion of a maximal superalgebra of certain types of supersymmetric supergravity backgrounds, including the Freund-Rubin backgrounds, and propose a geometric construction extending the well-known construction of its Killing superalgebra. We determine the structure of maximal Lie superalgebras and show that there is a finite number of isomorphism classes, all related via contractions from an orthosymplectic Lie superalgebra. We use the structure theory to show that maximally supersymmetric waves do not possess such a maximal superalgebra, but that the maximally supersymmetric Freund-Rubin backgrounds do. We perform the explicit geometric construction of the maximal superalgebra of AdS_4 x S^7 and find that is isomorphic to osp(1|32). We propose an algebraic construction of the maximal superalgebra of any background asymptotic to AdS_4 x S^7 and we test this proposal by computing the maximal superalgebra of the M2-brane in its two maximally supersymmetric limits, finding agreement.

Metric Lie n-algebras and double extensions

We prove a structure theorem for Lie n-algebras possessing an invariant inner product. We define the notion of a double extension of a metric Lie n-algebra by another Lie n-algebra and prove that all metric Lie n-algebras are obtained from the simple and one-dimensional ones by iterating the operations of orthogonal direct sum and double extension.

Lorentzian Lie 3-algebras and their Bagger-Lambert moduli space

We classify Lie 3-algebras possessing an invariant lorentzian inner product. The indecomposable objects are in one-to-one correspondence with compact real forms of metric semisimple Lie algebras. We analyse the moduli space of classical vacua of the Bagger-Lambert theory corresponding to these Lie 3-algebras. We establish a one-to-one correspondence between one branch of the moduli space and compact riemannian symmetric spaces. We analyse the asymptotic behaviour of the moduli space and identify a large class of models with moduli branches exhibiting the desired N^{3/2} behaviour.

Metric Lie 3-algebras in Bagger-Lambert theory

We recast physical properties of the Bagger-Lambert theory, such as shift-symmetry and decoupling of ghosts, the absence of scale and parity invariance, in Lie 3-algebraic terms, thus motivating the study of metric Lie 3-algebras and their Lie algebras of derivations. We prove a structure theorem for metric Lie 3-algebras in arbitrary signature showing that they can be constructed out of the simple and one-dimensional Lie 3-algebras iterating two constructions: orthogonal direct sum and a new construction called a double extension, by analogy with the similar construction for Lie algebras. We classify metric Lie 3-algebras of signature (2,p) and study their Lie algebras of derivations, including those which preserve the conformal class of the inner product. We revisit the 3-algebraic criteria spelt out at the start of the paper and select those algebras with signature (2,p) which satisfy them, as well as indicate the construction of more general metric Lie 3-algebras satisfying the ghost-decoupling criterion.

Killing superalgebra deformations of ten-dimensional supergravity backgrounds

We explore Lie superalgebra deformations of the Killing superalgebras of some ten-dimensional supergravity backgrounds. We prove the rigidity of the Poincare superalgebras in types I, IIA and IIB, as well as of the Killing superalgebra of the Freund-Rubin vacuum of type IIB supergravity. We also prove rigidity of the Killing superalgebras of the NS5, D0, D3, D4 and D5 branes, whereas we exhibit the possible deformations of the D1, D2, D6 and D7 brane Killing superalgebras, as well as of that of the type II fundamental string solutions. We relate the superalgebra deformations of the D2 and D6 branes to those of the (delocalised) M2 brane and the Kaluza-Klein monopole, respectively. The good behaviour under Kaluza-Klein reduction suggests that the deformed superalgebras ought to have a geometric interpretation.
