Existence of Complementary and Variational Weak Solutions to Obstacle Problems for a Quasilinear Wave Equation

We prove the existence of weak solutions for the one obstacle problem associated with a class of quasilinear wave equations in one space dimension, extending previous results obtained in the linear case, and we also address the two obstacles problem. In contrast with the linear setting, for both strictly quasilinear cases we obtain continuous solutions in a weak complementary sense, which moreover satisfy a weak entropy condition in the free region where the string is not in contact with the obstacles. We further show that, in both the one and two obstacle cases, these solutions are variational solutions in a hyperbolic sense without the viscosity term.

An implicit two-phase obstacle-type problem for the $p$-Laplacian with the fractional gradient

In this work we study an inhomogeneous two-phase obstacle-type problem associated to the $s$-fractional $p$-Laplacian. Besides the existence and uniqueness of solutions, we study the convergence of the solutions when $s\to 1$ to the classical problem. We also study the continuous dependence with respect to the level-set function $v$, yielding an existence result for a two-phase obstacle-type problem with an implicit level-set function.

On the Obstacle Problem in Fractional Generalised Orlicz Spaces

We consider the one and the two obstacles problems for the nonlocal nonlinear anisotropic $g$-Laplacian $\mathcal{L}_g^s$, with $0<s<1$. We prove the strict T-monotonicity of $\mathcal{L}_g^s$ and we obtain the Lewy-Stampacchia inequalities. We consider the approximation of the solutions through semilinear problems, for which we prove a global $L^\infty$-estimate, and we extend the local Hölder regularity to the solutions of the obstacle problems in the case of the fractional $p(x,y)$-Laplacian operator. We make further remarks on a few elementary properties of related capacities in the fractional generalised Orlicz framework, with a special reference to the Hilbertian nonlinear case in fractional Sobolev spaces.

On the Stability of the $s$-Nonlocal $p$-Obstacle Problem and their Coincidence Sets and Free Boundaries

We show that the solutions to the nonlocal obstacle problems for the nonlocal $-Δ_p^s$ operator, when the fractional parameter $s\toσ$ for $0<σ\leq1$, converge to the solution of the corresponding obstacle problem for $-Δ_p^σ$, being $σ=1$ the classical obstacle problem for the local $p$-Laplacian. We discuss the weak stability of the quasi-characteristic functions of coincidence sets of the solution with the obstacle, which is a strong convergence of their characteristic functions when $s\nearrow 1$ under a nondegeneracy condition. This stability can be shown also in terms of the convergence of the free boundaries, as well as of the coincidence sets, in Hausdorff distance when $s\nearrow 1$, under non-degeneracy local assumptions on the external force and a local topological property of the coincidence set of the limit classical obstacle problem for the local $p$-Laplacian, essentially when the limit coincidence set is the closure of its interior.

Unilateral Problems for Quasilinear Operators with Fractional Riesz Gradients

In this work, we develop the classical theory of monotone and pseudomonotone operators in the class of convex constrained Dirichlet-type problems involving fractional Riesz gradients in bounded and in unbounded domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^d$. We consider the problem of finding $u\in K^s$, such that, \begin{equation*} \int_{\mathbb{R}^d}{\boldsymbol{a}(x,u,D^s u)\cdot D^s(v-u)}\,dx+\int_Ω{b(x,u,D^s u)(v-u)}\,dx\geq 0 %\langle F, v-u\rangle \end{equation*} for all $v\in K^s$. Here $K^s\subsetΛ^{s,p}_0(Ω)$ is a non-empty, closed and convex set of a fractional Sobolev type space $Λ^{s,p}_0(Ω)$ with $0\leq s\leq 1$ and $1<p<\infty$, and $D^s$ denotes the distributional Riesz fractional gradient, with two limit cases: $D^1=D$ representing the classical gradient in the classical Sobolev space $Λ^{1,p}_0(Ω)=W^{1,p}_0(Ω)$, and $-D^0=R$ denotes the vector-valued Riesz transform within $Λ^{0,p}_0(Ω)=\{u\in L^p(\mathbb{R}^d):\, u=0 \mbox{ a.e. in } \mathbb{R}^d\setminusΩ\}$. We discuss the existence and uniqueness of solutions in this novel framework and we obtain new results on the continuous dependence, with respect to the fractional parameter $s$, of variational solutions corresponding to several classical assumptions on the structural functions $\boldsymbol{a}$ and $b$ adapted to the fractional framework. We introduce an extension of the Mosco convergence for convex sets $K^s$ with respect to the parameter $s$, including the limit cases $s=1$ and $s=0$, to prove weak or strong convergences of the solutions $u_s$ and their fractional gradients $D^su$, according to different cases. Several applications are illustrated with examples of unilateral problems, including quasi-variational inequalities with constraints of obstacle type $u\geq ψ$ and $s$-gradient type $|D^su|\leq g$.

Nonlocal Lagrange multipliers and transport densities

We prove the existence of generalised solutions of the Monge-Kantorovich equations with fractional $s$-gradient constraint, $0<s<1$, associated to a general, possibly degenerate, linear fractional operator of the type, \begin{equation*} \mathscr L^su=-D^s\cdot(AD^su+\bs b\,u)+\bs d\cdot D^su+c\,u , \end{equation*} with integrable data, in the space $Λ^{s,p}_0(Ω)$, which is the completion of the set of smooth functions with compact support in a bounded domain $Ω$ for the $L^p$-norm of the distributional Riesz fractional gradient $D^s$ in $\R^d$ (when $s=1$, $D^1=D$ is the classical gradient). The transport densities arise as generalised Lagrange multipliers in the dual space of $L^\infty(\R^d)$ and are associated to the variational inequalities of the corresponding transport potentials under the constraint $|D^su|\leq g$. Their existence is shown by approximating the variational inequality through a penalisation of the constraint and nonlinear regularisation of the linear operator $\mathscr L^su$. For this purpose, we also develop some relevant properties of the spaces $Λ^{s,p}_0(Ω)$, including the limit case $p=\infty$ and the continuous embeddings $Λ^{s,q}_0(Ω)\subset Λ^{s,p}_0(Ω)$, for $1\le p\le q\le\infty$. We also show the localisation of the nonlocal problems ($0<s<1$), to the local limit problem with classical gradient constraint when $s\rightarrow1$, for which most results are also new for a general, possibly degenerate, partial differential operator $\mathscr L^1u$ only with integrable coefficients and bounded gradient constraint.

On fractional and classical hyperbolic obstacle-type problems

We consider weak solutions for the obstacle-type viscoelastic ($ν>0$) and very weak solutions for the obstacle inviscid ($ν=0$) Dirichlet problems for the heterogeneous and anisotropic wave equation in a fractional framework based on the Riesz fractional gradient $D^s$ ($0<s<1$). We use weak solutions of the viscous problem to obtain very weak solutions of the inviscid problem when $ν\searrow 0$. We prove that the weak and very weak solutions of those problems in the fractional setting converge as $s\nearrow 1$ to a weak solution and to a very weak solution, respectively, of the correspondent problems in the classical framework.

On an Anisotropic Fractional Stefan-Type Problem with Dirichlet Boundary Conditions

In this work, we consider the fractional Stefan-type problem in a Lipschitz bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ with time-dependent Dirichlet boundary condition for the temperature $\vartheta=\vartheta(x,t)$, $\vartheta=g$ on $Ω^c\times]0,T[$, and initial condition $η_0$ for the enthalpy $η=η(x,t)$, given in $Ω\times]0,T[$ by \[\frac{\partial η}{\partial t} +\mathcal{L}_A^s \vartheta= f\quad\text{ with }η\in β(\vartheta),\] where $\mathcal{L}_A^s$ is an anisotropic fractional operator defined in the distributional sense by \[\langle\mathcal{L}_A^su,v\rangle=\int_{\mathbb{R}^d}AD^su\cdot D^sv\,dx,\] $β$ is a maximal monotone graph, $A(x)$ is a symmetric, strictly elliptic and uniformly bounded matrix, and $D^s$ is the distributional Riesz fractional gradient for $0<s<1$. We show the existence of a unique weak solution with its corresponding weak regularity. We also consider the convergence as $s\nearrow 1$ towards the classical local problem, the asymptotic behaviour as $t\to\infty$, and the convergence of the two-phase Stefan-type problem to the one-phase Stefan-type problem by varying the maximal monotone graph $β$.

Global Existence for Nonlocal Quasilinear Diffusion Systems in Non-Isotropic Non-Divergence Form

Consider the quasilinear diffusion problem \[\begin{cases}\mathbf{u}'+Π(t,x,\mathbf{u},Σ\mathbf{u})\mathbb{A}\mathbf{u}=\mathbf{f}(t,x,\mathbf{u},Σ\mathbf{u})&\text{ in }]0,T[\timesΩ,\\\mathbf{u}=\mathbf{0}&\text{ in }]0,T[\timesΩ^c,\\\mathbf{u}(0,\cdot)=\mathbf{u}_0(\cdot)&\text{ in }Ω\end{cases}\] for an open set $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, $\mathbf{u}_0\in \mathbf{H}^s_0(Ω):=[H^s_0(Ω)]^m$ and any $T\in]0,\infty[$, where $Σ\mathbf{u}\in \mathbb{R}^q$ for $0<q\leq m\times n$ represents fractional or nonlocal derivatives with order $σ$ with $σ<2s$ for all $0<s\leq1$, including the classical gradient and derivatives of order greater than 1. We show global existence results for various quasilinear diffusion systems in non-divergence form, for different linear operators $\mathbb{A}$, including local elliptic systems, anisotropic fractional equations and systems, and anisotropic nonlocal operators, of the following type \[(\mathbb{A}\mathbf{u})^i=-\sum _{α,β,j} \partial_α(A^{αβ}_{ij}\partial_βu^j),\quad \mathbb{A}u=- D^s(A(x)D^su),\quad\text{ and }\quad (\mathbb{A}\mathbf{u})^i=\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}A_{ij}(x,y)\frac{u^j(x)-u^j(y)}{|x-y|^{n+2s}}\,dy,\] for coercive, invertible matrices $Π$ and suitable vectorial functions $\mathbf{f}$.

Analysis of a quasi-variational contact problem arising in thermoelasticity

We formulate and study two mathematical models of a thermoforming process involving a membrane and a mould as implicit obstacle problems. In particular, the membrane-mould coupling is determined by the thermal displacement of the mould that depends in turn on the membrane through the contact region. The two models considered are a stationary (or elliptic) model and an evolutionary (or quasistatic) one. For the first model, we prove the existence of weak solutions by solving an elliptic quasi-variational inequality coupled to elliptic equations. By exploring the fine properties of the variation of the contact set under non-degenerate data, we give sufficient conditions for the existence of regular solutions, and under certain contraction conditions, also a uniqueness result. We apply these results to a series of semi-discretised problems that arise as approximations of regular solutions for the evolutionary or quasistatic problem. Here, under certain conditions, we are able to prove existence for the evolutionary problem and for a special case, also the uniqueness of time-dependent solutions.

On a Class of Nonlocal Obstacle Type Problems Related to the Distributional Riesz Fractional Derivative

In this work, we consider the nonlocal obstacle problem with a given obstacle $ψ$ in a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, such that $\mathbb{K}_ψ^s=\{v\in H^s_0(Ω):v\geqψ\text{ a.e. in }Ω\}\neq\emptyset$, given by \[u\in\mathbb{K}_ψ^s:\langle\mathcal{L}_au,v-u\rangle\geq\langle F,v-u\rangle\quad\forall v\in\mathbb{K}^s_ψ,\] for $F\in H^{-s}(Ω)$, the dual space of $H^s_0(Ω)$, $0<s<1$. The nonlocal operator $\mathcal{L}_a:H^s_0(Ω)\to H^{-s}(Ω)$ is defined with a measurable, bounded, strictly positive singular kernel $a(x,y)$, possibly not symmetric, by \[\langle\mathcal{L}_au,v\rangle=P.V.\int_{\mathbb{R}^d}\int_{\mathbb{R}^d}v(x)(u(x)-u(y))a(x,y)dydx=\mathcal{E}_a(u,v),\] with $\mathcal{E}_a$ being a Dirichlet form. Also, the fractional operator $\tilde{\mathcal{L}}_A=-D^s\cdot AD^s$ defined with the distributional Riesz $s$-fractional derivative and a bounded matrix $A(x)$ gives a well defined integral singular kernel. The corresponding $s$-fractional obstacle problem converges as $s\nearrow1$ to the obstacle problem in $H^1_0(Ω)$ with the operator $-D\cdot AD$ given with the gradient $D$. We mainly consider problems involving the bilinear form $\mathcal{E}_a$ with one or two obstacles, and the N-membranes problem, deriving a weak maximum principle, comparison properties, approximation by bounded penalization, and the Lewy-Stampacchia inequalities. This provides regularity of the solutions, including a global estimate in $L^\infty(Ω)$, local Hölder regularity when $a$ is symmetric, and local regularity in $W^{2s,p}_{loc}(Ω)$ and $C^1(Ω)$ for fractional $s$-Laplacian obstacle-type problems. These novel results are complemented with the extension of the Lewy-Stampacchia inequalities to the order dual of $H^s_0(Ω)$ and some remarks on the associated $s$-capacity for general $\mathcal{L}_a$.

On nonlocal variational and quasi-variational inequalities with fractional gradient

We extend classical results on variational inequalities with convex sets with gradient constraint to a new class of fractional partial differential equations in a bounded domain with constraint on the distributional Riesz fractional gradient, the $σ$-gradient ($0<σ<1$). We establish continuous dependence results with respect to the data, including the threshold of the fractional $σ$-gradient. Using these properties we give new results on the existence to a class of quasi-variational variational inequalities with fractional gradient constraint via compactness and via contraction arguments. Using the approximation of the solutions with a family of quasilinear penalisation problems we show the existence of generalised Lagrange multipliers for the $σ$-gradient constrained problem, extending previous results for the classical gradient case, i.e., with $σ=1$.

Evolutionary quasi-variational and variational inequalities with constraints on the derivatives

This paper considers a general framework for the study of the existence of quasi-variational and variational solutions to a class of nonlinear evolution systems in convex sets of Banach spaces describing constraints on a linear combination of partial derivatives of the solutions. The quasi-linear operators are of monotone type, but are not required to be coercive for the existence of weak solutions, which is obtained by a double penalisation/regularisation for the approximation of the solutions. In the case of time-dependent convex sets that are independent of the solution, we show also the uniqueness and the continuous dependence of the strong solutions of the variational inequalities, extending previous results to a more general framework.

Variational and Quasi-Variational Inequalities with Gradient Type Constraints

This survey on stationary and evolutionary problems with gradient constraints is based on developments of monotonicity and compactness methods applied to large classes of scalar and vectorial solutions to variational and quasi-variational inequalities. Motivated by models for critical state problems and applications to free boundary problems in Mechanics and in Physics, in this work several known properties are collected and presented and a few novel results and examples are found.

Homogenization of obstacle problems in Orlicz-Sobolev spaces

We study the homogenization of obstacle problems in Orlicz-Sobolev spaces for a wide class of monotone operators (possibly degenerate or singular) of the $p(\cdot)$-Laplacian type. Our approach is based on the Lewy-Stampacchia inequalities, which then give access to a compactness argument. We also prove the convergence of the coincidence sets under non-degeneracy conditions.

The obstacle-mass constraint problem for hyperbolic conservation laws. Solvability

In this work we introduce the obstacle-mass constraint problem for a multidimensional scalar hyperbolic conservation law. We prove existence of an entropy solution to this problem by a penalization/viscosity method. The mass constraint introduces a nonlocal Lagrange multiplier in the penalized equation, giving rise to a nonlocal parabolic problem. We determine conditions on the initial data and on the obstacle function which ensure global in time existence of solution. These are not smoothness conditions, but relate to the propagation of the support of the initial data.

Solutions for linear conservation laws with gradient constraints

We consider variational inequality solutions with prescribed gradient constraints for first order linear boundary value problems. For operators with coefficients only in $L^2$, we show the existence and uniqueness of the solution by using a combination of parabolic regularization with a penalization in the nonlinear diffusion coefficient. We also prove the continuous dependence of the solution with respect to the data, as well as, in a coercive case, the asymptotic stabilization as time $t\rightarrow+\infty$ towards the stationary solution. In a particular situation, motivated by the transported sandpile problem, we give sufficient conditions for the equivalence of the first order problem with gradient constraint with a two obstacles problem, the obstacles being the signed distances to the boundary. This equivalence, in special conditions, illustrates also the possible stabilization of the solution in finite time.

Increasing powers in a degenerate parabolic logistic equation

The purpose of this paper is to study the asymptotic behavior of the positive solutions of the problem $$ \partial_t u-Δu=a u-b(x) u^p \text{in} Ω\times \R^+, u(0)=u_0, u(t)|_{\partial Ω}=0 $$ as $p\to +\infty$, where $Ω$ is a bounded domain and $b(x)$ is a nonnegative function. We deduce that the limiting configuration solves a parabolic obstacle problem, and afterwards we fully describe its long time behavior.
