Geometric realizability of epimorphisms to curve orbifold groups

Given a connected dense Zariski open set of a compact Kähler manifold $U$, we address the general problem of the existence of surjective holomorphic maps ${F:U\to C}$ to smooth complex quasi-projective curves from properties of $π_1(U)$. It is known that, if such $F$ exists, then there exists a finitely generated normal subgroup $K\trianglelefteqπ_1(U)$ such that $π_1(U)/K$ is isomorphic to a curve orbifold group $G$ (i.e. the orbifold fundamental group of a smooth complex quasi-projective curve endowed with an orbifold structure). In this paper, we address the converse of that statement in the case where the orbifold Euler characteristic of $G$ is negative, finding a (unique) surjective holomorphic map $F:U\to C$ which realizes the quotient $π_1(U)\twoheadrightarrow π_1(U)/K\cong G$ at the level of (orbifold) fundamental groups. We also prove that our theorem is sharp, meaning that the result does not hold for any curve orbifold group with non-negative orbifold Euler characteristic. Furthermore, we apply our main theorem to address Serre's question of which orbifold fundamental groups of smooth quasi-projective curves can be realized as fundamental groups of complements of curves in $\mathbb{P}^2$.

Homotopy type of complements of fiber-type curves

In this note we study the homotopy type of the complement of a plane projective curve of fiber-type. Roughly speaking, a curve of fiber-type is a finite union of fibers of a pencil. Under some restrictions, a full description of their homotopy type is given. In the context of fiber-type curves, we also partially answer in the positive a question originally posed by Libgober on the homotopy type of complements of plane curves, namely, whether or not the homotopy type of a curve complement is determined by the fundamental group and its Euler characteristic.

The fundamental group of the complement of a generic fiber-type curve

In this paper we describe and characterize the fundamental group of the complement to generic fiber-type curves, i.e. unions of (the closure of) finitely many generic fibers of a component-free pencil $F=[f:g]:\mathbb C\mathbb P^2\dashrightarrow \mathbb C\mathbb P^1$. We also observe that these groups have already appeared in the literature in examples by Eyral and Oka associated with curves of fiber-type. As a byproduct of our techniques we obtain a criterion to address Zariski's Problem on the commutativity of the fundamental group of the complement of a plane curve.

Vanishing of Higher Order Alexander-type Invariants of Plane Curves

The higher order degrees are Alexander-type invariants of complements to an affine plane curve. In this paper we characterize the vanishing of such invariants for transversal unions of plane curves $C'$ and $C''$ in terms of the finiteness, the vanishing properties of the invariants of $C'$ and $C''$, and whether they are irreducible or not. As a consequence, we characterize which of these types of curves have trivial multivariable Alexander polynomial in terms of their defining equations. Our results impose obstructions on the class of groups that can be realized as fundamental groups of complements of a transversal union of curves.
