Out-of-plane transport of 1T-TaS2/graphene-based van der Waals heterostructures

Due to their anisotropy, layered materials are excellent candidates for studying the interplay between the in-plane and out-of-plane entanglement in strongly correlated systems. A relevant example is provided by 1T-TaS2, which exhibits a multifaceted electronic and magnetic scenario due to the existence of several charge density wave (CDW) configurations. It includes quantum hidden phases, superconductivity and exotic quantum spin liquid (QSL) states, which are highly dependent on the out-of-plane stacking of the CDW. In this system, the interlayer stacking of the CDW is crucial for the interpretation of the underlying electronic and magnetic phase diagram. Here, thin-layers of 1T-TaS2 are integrated in vertical van der Waals heterostructures based on few-layer graphene (FLG) contacts and their electrical transport properties are measured. Different activation energies in the conductance and a gap at the Fermi level are clearly observed. Our experimental findings are supported by fully self-consistent DFT+U calculations, which evidence the presence of an energy gap in the few-layer limit, not necessarily coming from the formation of out-of-plane spin-paired bilayers at low temperatures, as previously proposed for the bulk. These results highlight dimensionality as a key effect for understanding the properties of 1T-TaS2 and opens the door to the possible experimental realization of low-dimensional QSLs.

Coherent coupling between vortex bound states and magnetic impurities in 2D layered superconductors

Bound states in superconductors are expected to exhibit a spatially resolved electron-hole asymmetry which is the hallmark of their quantum nature. This asymmetry manifests as oscillations at the Fermi wavelength, which is usually tiny and thus washed out by thermal broadening or by scattering at defects. Here we demonstrate theoretically and confirm experimentally that, when coupled to magnetic impurities, bound states in a vortex core exhibit an emergent axial electron-hole asymmetry on a much longer scale, set by the coherence length. We study vortices in 2H-NbSe$_2$ and in 2H-NbSe$_{1.8}$S_{0.2}$ with magnetic impurities, characterizing these with detailed Hubbard-corrected density functional calculations. We find that the induced electron-hole imbalance depends on the band character of the superconducting material. Our results open interesting prospects for the study of coupled superconducting bound states.

Spectroscopic analysis of vibronic relaxation pathways in molecular spin qubit $[$Ho(W$_5$O$_{18}$)$_2]^{9-}$: sparse spectra are key

Molecular vibrations play a key role in magnetic relaxation processes of molecular spin qubits as they couple to spin states, leading to the loss of quantum information. Direct experimental determination of vibronic coupling is crucial to understand and control the spin dynamics of these nano-objects, which represent the limit of miniaturization for quantum devices. Herein, we measure the vibrational properties of the molecular spin qubit $[$Ho(W$_5$O$_{18}$)$_2]^{9-}$ by means of magneto-infrared spectroscopy. Our results allow us to unravel the vibrational decoherence pathways in combination with $ab$ $initio$ calculations including vibronic coupling. We observe field-induced spectral changes near 63 and 370 cm$^{-1}$ that are modeled in terms of $f$-manifold crystal field excitations activated by odd-symmetry vibrations. The overall extent of vibronic coupling in this system is limited by a transparency window in the phonon density of states that acts to keep the intramolecular vibrations and $M_J$ levels apart. These findings advance the understanding of vibronic coupling in molecular magnets, place significant constraints on the pattern of crystal field levels in these systems, and provide a strategy for designing molecular spin qubits with improved coherence lifetimes.

Exploring the transport properties of equatorially low coordinated erbium single ion magnets

Single-molecule spin transport represents the lower limit of miniaturization of spintronic devices. These experiments, although extremely challenging, are key to understand the magneto-electronic properties of a molecule in a junction. In this context, theoretical screening of new magnetic molecules provides invaluable knowledge before carrying out sophisticated experiments. Herein, we investigate the transport properties of three equatorially low-coordinated erbium single ion magnets with $C_{3v}$ symmetry: Er[N(SiMe$_3$)$_2$]$_3$ (1), Er(btmsm)$_3$ (2) and Er(dbpc)$_3$ (3), where btmsm = bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl and dbpc = 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresolate. Our ligand field analysis, based on previous spectroscopic data, confirms a ground state mainly characterized by $M_J$ =$\pm$15/2 in all three of them. The relaxation of their molecular structures when placed between two Au (111) electrodes leads to an even more symmetric $\sim D_{3h}$ environment, which ensures that these molecules would retain their single-molecule magnet behavior in the device setup. Hence, we simulate spin dependent transport using the DFT optimized structures on the basis of the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism, which, in 1 and 2, suggests a remarkable molecular spin filtering under the effect of an external magnetic field.

Peptides as versatile scaffolds for quantum computing

In this work we showcase the potential of peptides as versatile scaffolds for quantum computing and molecular spintronics. In particular, we focus on lanthanide-binding tags, which were originally developed in the field of biotechnology for the study of protein structure and dynamics. Firstly, we demonstrate quantum coherent oscillations in a Neodymium peptidic qubit. Then, employing bacterial biosynthesis, we investigate the possibility of increasing the number of qubits in the same molecular system, with the case studies being a double spin qubit with two distinct coordination environments, and an asymmetric chain of 9 spin qubits with a spin-spin separation of about 2 nm and in an arbitrarily chosen sequence of coordination environments. Finally, we take advantage of biochemical modification for the preparation of paramagnetic, chiral, Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111).Our experimental and theoretical characterization shows that this is a promising structure for spintronic applications, and in particular to improve on two state-of-the-art approaches to molecular spin qubits. We conclude with an overview of the challenges and new opportunities opened by this emerging field.

Quantum Error Correction with magnetic molecules

Quantum algorithms often assume independent spin qubits to produce trivial $|\uparrow\rangle=|0\rangle$, $|\downarrow\rangle=|1\rangle$ mappings. This can be unrealistic in many solid-state implementations with sizeable magnetic interactions. Here we show that the lower part of the spectrum of a molecule containing three exchange-coupled metal ions with $S=1/2$ and $I=1/2$ is equivalent to nine electron-nuclear qubits. We derive the relation between spin states and qubit states in reasonable parameter ranges for the rare earth $^{159}$Tb$^{3+}$ and for the transition metal Cu$^{2+}$, and study the possibility to implement Shor's Quantum Error Correction code on such a molecule. We also discuss recently developed molecular systems that could be adequate from an experimental point of view.

SIMPRE: Installation and User Manual

This is the installation and used manual of SIMPRE 1.1, a fortran77 code that can implement different effective electrostatic models based on point charges around a rare earth ion. The program calculates the full set of crystal field parameters, Stark energy levels and spin wave functions, as well as magnetic properties. The package has already been successfully applied to several mononuclear systems with single-molecule magnetic behavior. The determination of effective point charge parameters in these studies facilitates its application to new systems. SIMPRE was presented in DOI:10.1002/jcc.23341, and SIMPRE 1.1, an updated version that follows the prevailing Crystal Field conventions was presented in DOI:10.1002/jcc.23699.

Coherent manipulation of spin qubits based on polyoxometalates: the case of the single ion magnet [GdW$_{30}$P$_5$O$_{110}$]$^{12-}$

Polyoxometalate single ion magnet [GdW$_{30}$P$_5$O$_{110}$]$^{12-}$ has been studied by generalized Rabi oscillation experiments. It was possible to increase the number of coherent rotations tenfold through matching the Rabi frequency with the frequency of the proton. Achieving high coherence with polyoxometalate chemistry, we show their excellent potential not only for the storage of quantum information but even for the realization of quantum algorithms.
