Power Partitions and Hayman Functions

We prove, within the probabilistic framework of Khinchin families, that the generating function $P_k$ of partitions into $k$-th powers is strongly Gaussian in the sense of Báez-Duarte, and even further that it is a Hayman function. Thus the Hardy--Ramanujan asymptotic formula for the number $p_k(n)$ of partitions of $n$ into $k$-th powers which reads \[ p_k(n) \sim \frac{α_k}{n^{(3k+1)/(2k+2)}} \exp\!\Big(β_k\, n^{1/(k+1)}\Big), \qquad n\to\infty, \] where $α_k$ and~$β_k$ are explicit constants depending only on $k$, follows directly from Hayman's asymptotic formula for strongly Gaussian power series. The proof of strong Gaussianity of $P_k$ combines a Gaussianity criterion for Khinchin families with certain bounds of Tenenbaum, Wu and Li on the generating function; the asymptotic formula is recovered by computing asymptotic approximations of the mean and variance of the associated family. Analogous results are presented for the generating function $Q_k$ of partitions into distinct $k$-th powers.

Growth of power series with nonnegative coefficients, and moments of power series distributions

Any power series with nonnegative coefficients has an associated family of probability distributions supported on the nonnegative integers. There is a close connection between the function theoretic properties of the power series and the moments of the family of distributions. In this paper, we describe that interplay, provide simpler proofs of some known results by emphasizing the probabilistic perspective, and present some new theorems.

Counting coprime pairs in random squares

Extending the classical Dirichlet's density theorem on coprime pairs, in this paper we describe completely the probability distribution of the number of coprime pairs in random squares of fixed side length in the lattice $\mathbb{N}^2$. The limit behaviour of this distribution as the side length of the random square tends to infinity is also considered.

Large Powers asymptotics, Khinchin families and Lagrangian distributions

This paper delves on the versatility of the theory of Khinchin families for asymptotic estimation. We show that in combination with Local Central Limit theorems for lattice variables, Khinchin families furnish a convenient and unified framework to deal with asymptotic results of the coefficients of large powers of power series. We revisit in the present paper this classical theme from that point of view, obtaining clean new proofs and a number of new results. Asymptotic results for the coefficients of solutions of Lagrange's equation fall naturally into this combined framework. We provide a direct proof of an extension of the Otter and Meir-Moon asymptotic formula as well as asymptotic results for families of Lagrangian probability distributions.

Khinchin families, set constructions, partitions and exponentials

In this paper, we give a simple criterion to verify that functions of the form $e^g$ are in the Hayman class when $g$ is a power series with nonnegative coefficients. Thus, using the Hayman and Báez-Duarte formulas, we obtain asymptotics for the coefficients of generating functions that arise in many examples of set construction in analytic combinatorics. This new criterion greatly simplifies that obtained previously by the authors.

Some arithmetic properties of Pólya's urn

Following Hales (2018), the evolution of Pólya's urn may be interpreted as a walk, a Pólya walk, on the integer lattice $\mathbb{N}^2$. We study the visibility properties of Pólya's walk or, equivalently, the divisibility properties of the composition of the urn. In particular, we are interested in the asymptotic average time that a Pólya walk is visible from the origin, or, alternatively, in the asymptotic proportion of draws so that the resulting composition of the urn is coprime. Via de Finetti's exchangeability theorem, Pólya's walk appears as a mixture of standard random walks. This paper is a follow-up of Cilleruelo-Fernández-Fernández (2019), where similar questions were studied for standard random walks.

Asymptotic Stability of Empirical Processes and Related Functionals

Let $E$ be a space of observables in a sequence of trials $ξ_n$ and define $m_n$ to be the empirical distributions of the outcomes. We discuss the almost sure convergence of the sequence $m_n$ in terms of the $ψ$-weak topology of measures, when the sequence $ξ_n$ is assumed to be stationary. In this respect, the limit variable is naturally described as a certain canonical conditional distribution. Then, given some functional $τ$ defined on a space of laws, the consistency of the estimators $τ(m_n)$ is investigated. Hence, a criterion for a refined notion of robustness, that applies when considering random measures, is provided in terms of the modulus of continuity of $τ$.

Hausdorff Measures, Dyadic Approximations and Dobiński Set

Dobiński set $\mathcal{D}$ is an exceptional set for a certain infinite product identity, whose points are characterized as having exceedingly good approximations by dyadic rationals. We study the Hausdorff dimension and logarithmic measure of $\mathcal{D}$ by means of the Mass Transference Principle and by the construction of certain appropriate Cantor-like sets, termed willow sets, contained in $\mathcal{D}$.

Transient Propagation and Scattering of Quasi-Rayleigh Waves in Plates: Quantitative comparison between Pulsed TV-Holography Measurements and FC(Gram) elastodynamic simulations

We study the scattering of transient, high-frequency, narrow-band quasi-Rayleigh elastic waves by through-thickness holes in aluminum plates, in the framework of ultrasonic nondestructive testing (NDT) based on full-field optical detection. Sequences of the instantaneous two-dimensional (2-D) out-of-plane displacement scattering maps are measured with a self-developed PTVH system. The corresponding simulated sequences are obtained by means of an FC(Gram) elastodynamic solver introduced recently, which implements a full three-dimensional (3D) vector formulation of the direct linear-elasticity scattering problem. A detailed quantitative comparison between these experimental and numerical sequences, which is presented here for the first time, shows very good agreement both in the amplitude and the phase of the acoustic field in the forward, lateral and backscattering areas. It is thus suggested that the combination of the PTVH system and the FC(Gram) elastodynamic solver provides an effective ultrasonic inspection tool for plate-like structures, with a significant potential for ultrasonic NDT applications.

Trees, homology, and automorphism groups of RAAGs

We study the homology of an explicit finite-index subgroup of the automorphism group of a partially commutative group, in the case when its defining graph is a tree. More concretely, we give a lower bound on the first Betti number of this subgroup, based on the number and degree of a certain type of vertices, which we call deep. We then use combinatorial methods to analyze the average value of this Betti number, in terms of the size of the defining tree.

Zeros of sections of power series: deterministic and random

We present a streamlined proof (and some refinements) of a characterization (due to F. Carlson and G. Bourion, and also to P. Erdös and H. Fried) of the so called Szegö's power series. This characterization is then applied to readily obtain some (more) recent known results and some new results on the asymptotic distribution of zeros of sections of random power series, extricating quite naturally the deterministic ingredients. Finally, we study the possible limits of the zero counting probabilities of a power series.

Visible lattice points in random walks

We consider the possible visits to visible points of a random walker moving up and right in the integer lattice (with probability $α$ and $1-α$, respectively) and starting from the origin. We show that, almost surely, the asymptotic proportion of strings of $k$ consecutive visible lattice points visited by such an $α$-random walk is a certain constant $c_k(α)$, which is actually an (explicitly calculable) polynomial in $α$ of degree $2\lfloor(k-1)/2\rfloor $. For $k=1$, this gives that, almost surely, the asymptotic proportion of time the random walker is visible from the origin is $c_1(α)=6/π^2$, independently of $α$.

A limit theorem for selectors

Any (measurable) function $K$ from $\mathbb{R}^n$ to $\mathbb{R}$ defines an operator $\mathbf{K}$ acting on random variables $X$ by $\mathbf{K}(X)=K(X_1, \ldots, X_n)$, where the $X_j$ are independent copies of $X$. The main result of this paper concerns selectors $H$, continuous functions defined in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and such that $H(x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_n) \in \{x_1,x_2, \ldots, x_n\}$. For each such selector $H$ (except for projections onto a single coordinate) there is a unique point $ω_H$ in the interval $(0,1)$ so that for any random variable $X$ the iterates $\mathbf{H}^{(N)}$ acting on $X$ converge in distribution as $N \to \infty$ to the $ω_H$-quantile of $X$.

Random index of codivisibility

The index of codivisibility of a set of integers is the size of its largest subset with a common prime divisor. For large random samples of integers, the index of codivisibility is approximately normal.

Equidistribution and coprimality

This paper is devoted to the study of equidistributional properties of \textit{totient points} in $\mathbb{N}^r$, that is, of coprime $r$-tuples of integers, with particular emphasis on some relevant sets of totient points fulfilling extra divisibility or coprimality conditions, or lying on arithmetic progressions.

Asymptotic normality and greatest common divisors

We report on some statistical regularity properties of greatest common divisors: for large random samples of integers, the number of coprime pairs and the average of the gcd's of those pairs are approximately normal, while the maximum of those gcd's (appropriately normalized) follows approximately a Fréchet distribution approximately. We also consider $r$-tuples instead of pairs, and moments other than the average.
